Notes: AKA 240 Gordie. At the NHRA Winternationals, Bonin set Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.18/245.23 that placed him in thirteenth on the grid. It wouldn't be fair not to mention that the front end was up on that pass, and he drove it through to qualify. Few drivers would have been able to save that run. In the first round, he beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.27/242.58 but failed to get the car stopped and drove the car into the catch net. In round two, he lost to Kosty Ivanof. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15, and in the first round, he crossed the centerline and lost to Dale Pulde. He won the NHRA Division race at Beeline. In the final, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.42/227 with a 6.22 (Low ET) at 237.46. He also ran 6.18/231 at the US Nationals but failed to qualify on a 6.10 bump!

Notes: Jenner had nothing to do with this car. It was Ron Hodgson and Verheul. The car was new in 1980. Still, it was the same setup as the 1979 car, and it was an Al Swindahl Chassis Components car. There were two cars. One stayed in Canada and was pulled around to shows. The other one was a national event car. When we ran the tour deal in the NW (Portland, Boise, Edmonton, Seattle), we ran both cars and got twice the money. Frank Hall usually drove the local car. Leon Lippoldt - crew member | Qualified #6 at Bakersfield at 6.342/220.04. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, Bonin qualified #1 with a 6.68/223. A 6.65/219 beat John Collins' 6.77/216 in the first round, while he beat a tire-smoking Gary Densham in the semifinals. This put Gordie in the final against Kenny Bernstein. As you can tell by the times, traction was poor, and in the final, Bernstein set Low ET with a 6.54/214 to get the victory over Bonin's runner-up 6.68/202 effort. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18 qualified #6. Unfortunately, they lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. As mentioned, they qualified #6 at Bakersfield for the sixteen-car show. But Bonin broke the tires loose in round one, and his shut off 7.15 run lost to Densham's 6.52/224. Everything lined up the following week (March 15) at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gordie ran 5.97/245.23 to qualify #3 (tough show!) He ran an easy 6.24/237.46 to advance past a fouling Shirl Greer in the first round. A second-round 6.16/242.58 beat Fuzz Miller and a 6.12/243.24 in the semifinal beat Bernstein. In the final, he was up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was a good close race, but Bonin's 6.18/241.28 got the victory over Dale's 6.21/223.

Notes: We ran the turbo on several full passes. I believe the best was 6.27/230, but it's been 28 years. The last time we tried it was at the Sacramento points race in 81. Didn't qualify, so we put the regular stuff back on and won the race. LOL. The thinking was Denver was next and the turbos didn't care what altitude it was. They would just spin faster. Different combos were tried. Finally ended up just changing cams and then you could go back to the regular stuff. The clutch deal was real tricky as it tended to just jump when the boost would come in and was hard to control. - Leon Lippoldt | Photo shows car with the standard blower setup.

Notes: Bonin drove this car on August 22 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.23/233.16 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.80/243. | I saw a picture of the NW-local Korzan Monza Bonin drove in the early 80s when SIR and Portland were AHRA from '81 to '83. I was in SoCal at the time thinking those rainy mooks have to wait till April for nitro, and Orange County jumps off the first Saturday in January. - Joe Moore

Notes: Dwayne Tetz brought new 300 inch Al Swindahl car to the team. They ran five NHRA national events, qualifying at each. Jenner: "In prorating our points for the entire year, we would have ended up in 5th place." In adition, they also won AHRA World Finals, setting both ends of the track record in the process. Photo: Bonin tries to rotate the starting line at Seattle as the car makes its debut during the track's 30th Anniversary race in '89. Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 mph" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round.

(We had an archived speed of 296.73 from Brainerd 94 - need to confirm). | Bonin started the '94 season on a sour note as his "Smokin' Joe's" Mustang failed to qualify at Pomona and Arizona. At the NHRA Winternationals his best of 5.52/261.39 was good for the second alternate and at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, he was first alternate with a 5.58/241.15. Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1995 NHRA Oldsmobile Springnats, Columbus. DNQ with a best of 5.47/274.97. Confirmed 292.39 at Maple Grove '95. Did Gordie run 297.49 this year (if so, it was not at an NHRA national event). | Bonin started his season at the Bakersfield Warm-up event in January. The team had lots of problems and the best they could run was 6.25/151.31. The following week, they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes was having a rough time getting the car to hook up. A 5.36/273.97 got them into the show in the #15 spot. But an opening round 5.42/247.72 lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.14/285. The NHRA Arizona Nationals went even worse. Hughes was trying out a different engine combination. Gordie made runs of 7.05, 11.59, 5.54, and 6.05. His 5.54/274.30 ended up as the second alternate for the show. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was another tough race for the team. Bonin qualified #15 with a 5.56/258.69 and he lost to John Force in the opening round. Gordie qualified #12 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.34/278.81. An opening round 5.39/270.43 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he lost to Chuck Beal in round two. The team eventually got it sorted out and had a pretty good season. Best NHRA national event ET was a 5.137 at the Ennis Fall event.

Notes: Bonin was the fifth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.112/223.54 best. He did not run at the NHRA Arizona Nationals or the NHRA Gatornationals, but he was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. There he was the third alternate at 5.020/290.97. Gordie qualified on the bump at Topeka Spring at 4.846. The qualifying sheets show 447.53, but we think that was 287.53. We need to confirm. Gordie shut off to a 10-second run against Blaine Johnson in round one. He was the second alternate at the Autolite Nationals at 5.872/152.85 and was the second alternate at Seattle at 5.178/241.54. That was Gordie's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: One of two '64 A/FX Falcons built by DST at the behest of Ford. The first went to Dick Brannan. Match racer Phil Bonner had purchased his own car and was aiming to replicate this effort when Ford decided it made sense to bring him into the fold. These Falcons served as the test bed for the soon-to-come '65 Mustang factory experimental effort. - RT | Bonner faced Malcolm Durham for a best of five match race at 75/80 Dragway on September 11. He won the first two races with runs of 11.09/124.21 and 11.07/125.81 before Durham got one back in the third race. Phil wrapped up the match in the fourth race. On September 20, Phil was at Richmond Dragway for a best of five match race with Durham. Bonner warmed up for the match with a 10.85/125.52. Phil needed only three passes to win the match as he won three straight with times of 10.76/126.22, 10.75/125.69, and 10.95/126.75.

Notes: Early version of a funny car. Ran on gas or alky with carbs. | Phil was at Cecil County on July 31 for a best of five match race against Al Eckstrand driving the "Golden Commandos" Plymouth. Bonner ran two warm-up runs, a 10.66/145 and a 10.12/137. In the first race, Eckstrand’s 9.93/138 beat Phil's 10.06/138.46. In the next race, Bonner missed third gear and lost and Al won with a 9.91/138. Phil lost the match in the third race when he fouled. - RH

Notes: Phil Bonner reset the NHRA A/FX record to 10.90 in April. On May 1, Phil was at Cecil County. He was supposed to run Malcolm Durham in a best of three match, but Malcolm failed to show. Phil ended up running his Mustang against three sportsman racers. Bonner ran a best of 10.46/132.45 in winning all three races. On June 25, he raced Dick Harell at 75/89 Maryland. Phil won all three of their races with times of 10.67/132.35,10.42 and 10.52. The next day, Durham showed up for his match against Bonner at York, but the Chevelle had problems on all the runs, and he lost the match to Phil's Mustang, which ran 10.52/132.35 and 10.45/133.

Notes: Phil Bonner was one of the first funny car superstars with the match bash "Daddy Warbucks" Falcon. The Holman & Moody prepared 1964 Falcon was built as a gas-powered A/FX, but "Daddy Warbucks" transformed quickly. By the end of 1965, Bonner had added injectors and nitro to the 427 SOHC that Don Martin tuned. The "Daddy Warbucks" car ran tens in 1964. by the time the car retired, it had run 8.94 at 155.70 in early 1966. Bonner won the NASCAR Winternationals in the Frank Vega-sponsored Falcon. The Match Race Madness section of the June 1966 Super Stock magazine has Bonner losing to Malcolm Durham at Capitol Raceway after breaking in the first round. The following month's issue had Bonner beating Durham three straight at Cecil County. Phil was a very popular match racer with this wheelstanding match bash funny car. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki) | Phil's flying Falcon was very successful on the match race trail in early '66. I'm going to start this with a couple of losses, but read on, and you will see he ran well. He was at Smithfield, Texas, on March 27 for a best of five match against Gene Snow. He won the first two races with times of 9.57/141.95 and 9.67/143.76. In the third race, he fouled, and a 9.62/140.84 lost to Snow's 9.24/145. The all-important final was run with Phil and Gene tied at two wins each. Bonner missed a shift, and Gene won the match with a 9.22/146. A best of three match was run at Aquasco on April 17 against the "Golden Commandos." Unfortunately, Phil lost three straight. Shortly after this, he installed an automatic transmission in the Falcon. He was up against Malcolm Durham's new Corvair at Cecil County on May 1, and Phil won three straight. Then he was up against another new car, the Charger of Al Graeber. Bob Harrop drove the car at Maple Grove on May 8 for a best of five match. Phil won the first two races with times of 9.66/142.40 and 9.56. Harrop came back to win the next three races and the match. Bonner's best times were 9.52/143.08. He took another loss on May 14 at Alton against Pete Seaton's Chevelle. It was a best of three, and Phil won the first race with a 9.80/141.28, but the Chevelle came back to win the next two races and the match. He raced at the Cecil County Factory Showdown on May 22. He made it to the final with times of 9.29 and 9.32 before losing to Bill Lawton. Then the little Falcon went on a winning spree. On June 4, he ran Huston Platt's "Dixie Twister" Nova at Atco. It was a best of five, and Bonner won the first race with a 9.28/148 over Platt's 9.64/144. In the second race, Huston's 9.60 beat Phil, but the Falcon was able to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.32/148 and 9.46/142. He stayed at Atco the next day (June 5) to beat Doug Thorley's Nova three straight. Phil's best on this day was a 9.29/148. He beat Tom Smith two straight in a best of three at Hagerstown, Md., on June 10. Bonner set both ends of the track record there with times of 9.56/145.61. He had a rematch with Seaton on June 25 at Dickinson, Texas. It was a best of five, and Phil won the first, third, and fourth race to win the match. He ran a 9.65/147.54 best. Notes: Injected fuel. The car debuted later in 1966 and was run in 1967 as well. Run by Jim Cagle in 1968 as "Jim Clay Ford Warhorse." 122 AWB. At Delmar, per 10/07/66 National Dragster, Bonner ran 8.72/163.33, his best stats for 1966, but it's unclear whether it was in this car or his Falcon. Crofton MD 1966 ET (11/11/66 Drag News) mph Crofton MD 1966 (9/23/66 Drag Times). Phil debuted a new Mustang in August 1966 to replace his aging Falcon. In one of its first outings, it ran a best of 9.33/157.89 in beating Cecil Yother in a best-of-five match race at Union Grove. He lost in a best two out of three match at Maple Grove against Bob Harrop on September 24. Bonner won his first race with an 8.97/156.52, but then in the second race, the SOHC engine broke a valve, letting Harrop's Dodge get by for the win. Bob soloed in the last race for the match win. Phil had a bit more bad luck at Capitol on October 9. He was running a best-of-three-match race against Roger Lindamood. He was slow off the line in the first race, and his quicker 8.82 couldn't catch Roger's 8.85. In the second race, Lindamood fouled, so Phil ran an 18.28 for the win. He was way out front in the deciding race but suddenly slowed with a ruptured fuel line, and Roger blasted past for the match race win.

Notes: 118" AWB, fuel injected. This car was under construction in 1966, but they never ran it that I am aware of. They sold the car in April of 1967. Car was run by Bob Bowen in 1967 and 1968 as the "Prestone Silencer."
