Notes: Found some more info the other day, all about the 11 years of "blower" racing. Datsun debut Jan 17, 1986, 9:24@148.2 mph. 1st car into the 8s in BB/G, 8:96@153. Eventually went 8:79@156.79. For CC/G, put a 302 crank into a 305 block to make 266 cubes; it went 9:24. Ran it like this as an all-girl team for wild bunch. commodore was a partly built VK that we turned into a VL Berlina when they were still brand new, May 8, 1987. 9:51@147 1st pass with 366 SBC. I crashed it on Feb 11, 1989, but in those few years, I ran CC/8 with 266, BB/G with a 331, 8:65@161, AA/G with a 468BB, best of 8:12@170. Steel 55 Chev debut on Nov 17, 1989. 8:14 first pass with 468BB, went 7:85@175 later that day. I ran in the exhibition class called Top Doorslammer, which ran 7:16. We have missed out to Les Winter for the 5th spot in the 200mph club as it only went 7:08@198, at just a tad over 3000 lbs. The Fibreglass 55 debuted mid 1994,6:98@202, 2420 lbs, best run with me driving, 6:66@210, with Col driving, 6:67@209+. It was consistent but hurt parts all the time. And we had just about given up two years later, final run Jan 1997. The pics got mixed up, but you can figure it out. Datto 1986, Commodore 87/89, glass 55 94. Notes: Never worked - too high & light, but beautiful. Doug faced Don Nicholson in a best of three match race on May 22 at Martin, Michigan's US 131. Don won two straight over the Nova with Thorley running a best of 9.72/142. The little Nova did better on June 4 against Dick Jesse's GTO at York's US 30. It was a best of five match and in the first race Doug ran 9.21/146.87 over Jesse who broke a rear axle. In the second race, a 10.06/138.03 beat the "Unswitchable's" 10.24/143. The third race was a close one with the Pontiac's 10.22/136 beat Doug's 10.24/137.40. Thorley fouled in the fourth race and Jessie went into a wheelstand and crossed the center line. The fifth race was never run due to a curfew. The following day (June 5) saw Thorley at Atco for a best of three match against Phil Bonner. This was not a good match for Doug. He shut off in the first race due to a wheelstand. In the second race his 9.63/149 lost to Bonner's 9.29/148 and Phil won the third race as well.

Notes: Doug Thorley's Corvair is one of the best-remembered funny cars of the Sixties. It was known both for its performance and its looks. The Corvair replaced his "Chevy 2 Much" '65 Chevy II. The new Pat Foster, Ron Scrima-built piece had tinted Plexiglas windows, a lace paint job, and gold painted Halibrand mags. The car was the poster child of late Sixties fads. Thorley had one of the great weekends of his career at Indy '67. The Doug's Headers Corvair ran 7.693 to win the race over several Hemi-powered machines. He also set Top Speed at 192.30. The 7.69 run and Indy win were the high point of Thorley's funny driving career. The notoriety from the win led to Thorley getting a deal with American Motors to build a rear-engine funny car, but the AMC machines never reached the success of the Chevy. | On August 6/1967, Doug Thorley and his supercharged Corvair ran the quickest pass to date by a Funny Car, a 7.86/184 mph. That day at Lions, he also backed it up with a superb 7.91. At the Indy Nationals of that year, he also ran a nice 7.83, winning the race as well. - BS | Components: 490 cubes (stroked 427 Chev), GMC 6/71 blower, Enderle "bug catcher" injection, Art Carr TorqueFlite-9" Ford rear with 3.90 cogs, exhibition Engineering (Pat Foster and Ron Scrima) chassis, coil-over shocks. He was featured in 9/67 Car Craft. - RT | Doug debuted this car at Irwindale on May 20. On its maiden run, it ran 8.50/172. Thorley was back at Irwindale on May 27 for a best-of-three-match race against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. His car had nothing but problems, and Doug lost three straight. His ailing 12.17 lost to Ronda's 8.72 in their first race. A slightly better 11.01/136.98, lost to the Mustang's 8.67/165 in the second race. And Doug shut the car off early in their last race giving Ronda three straight wins. Doug was at Fremont on June 26 for a best of three match race against Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-'Cuda." Thorley had a lot of problems on this day. Doug broke a couple of valves in their first race and lost to Fred's 8.65/185. Doug could not run after that, and Goeske made a solo run for the match race win. Also ran 191.89 at Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67.

Notes: Doug was at Lions on August 17 with the new Javelin. He made an 8.23/184.80 check-out pass. Powered by a 390 punched out to 439 inches. The January 1969 Drag Strip magazine said, "The car did not match the 7.60s of Doug's Corvair, but runs 8.10s at 188." The car weighed 1665 lbs., soaking wet. It used a B&M Tork Master auto trans, and ran a confirmed 8.19 at Lions. Saw a picture in the '82 HRM pictorial showing two of the names in front of the front wheel: Gary Slusser and Jim Dunn. - Joe Moore. | The Javelin-1, sponsored by Doug Thorley Headers, was built by Woody Gilmore's Race Car Engineering, primarily to address Doug's growing concern about blower explosions and fires, which were becoming more commonplace in 1968. As a result, Gilmore put the engine behind the driver. With its one-piece body removed from the chassis, Javelin-1 looked like an overgrown go-kart.
