Notes: The "Ramchargers" were a famed drag racing team that helped develop the funny car class in the Sixties and well into the Seventies. The Ramchargers were a group of Chrysler engineers that raced on the side using the best of Chrysler engineering. The team ran a series of race cars, including an altered '49 Plymouth ("High & Mighty") to a plethora of stocks and super stockers. The Ramchargers group included Dick Maxwell, Tom Hoover, Phil Goulet, Don Westerdale, Jim Thornton, and many others. This bunch began the early development of the funny car. The Ramchargers were one of the first teams to have the 2% tweaked-wheelbase super stockers, having developed a 1964-car with these alterations. That 2% experiment led to the next stage of the radical altered wheelbase funny cars. After building a test mule Plymouth with 10" front-15" rear wheelbase relocation, the Ramchargers acquired this A990 from Dodge. It was acid-dipped at AeroChem in California and assembled with a minor, NHRA-legal 2% wheelbase relocation for the Winter national events. Mike Buckel drove it to a win at the AHRA event in Beeline Dragway, Arizona. Thornton drove the following NHRA weekend at Pomona without success against the Ford FX entries. It was converted to full AWB by the team itself that spring, reappearing for the first time on May 1/1965, at York against Sox & Martin, where it clocked a 9.83 at 139 in its first appearance (and defeated Sox, who had clocked the first 9-second time just a week earlier). The car was campaigned extensively that year, culminating in an unreal 8.910 at 148.66 at Cecil County on August 7/1965, running 50% fuel and the team's match-race 472" stroker engine. This was why the car did not compete at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30 that same day. The 8.91 time is backed up by 9.19/9.20 performances two weeks prior at Cecil County with the same combination on 30% nitro. As a result, this Coronet in the photo (shown at Aquasco, Md., in early 1966 when nitro usage had resulted in shorter Hilborn stacks) is said to be one of the first funny cars into the eights, if not the first-ever. Jim Thornton drove the car to a great 8.925/150.75 at Cecil County in 1965. The Coronet was feared by many, and rightly so. They ran the car into the 1966 season, selling it to Bobby Harrop that year when their new Dart was running. After running most of 1966 and repainting it, Harrop reportedly crashed and destroyed it under the Mike Hammer Enterprises banner. Authority Mike Guffey states this is true. The date and location of the accident are not verified. An 8/19/66 Drag Times suggests this car ran 157.00 mph in 1965 in Detroit. However, when they were selling the car early in 1966, their for sale ad lists the best speed as 150.5 mph. It is possible the times in the resale ad were noted based on the team's 426" package and not the record-setting (and unknown at the time) 472" match race engine hand-built by engineer Tom Hoover. Notes: The original Little Red Wagon was built by Jim Schaeffer and John Collier, along with some engineers from the Dodge Truck Division, with Dick Branstner and Roger Lindamood responsible for the design and installation of then-unique engine subframe. They were responsible for tuning as well. The quoted time was the shakedown run, with the Ramchargers' Jim Thornton at the wheel. The truck swapped out a slant-six for a new 426 Dodge hemi with dual quads and a Torqueflite trans. Weight was 2,670 pounds, but that was expected to drop slightly with the adition of lightweight fiberglass doors. Note the white-painted steel wheels used early on. The truck was built to run in the A/FX class, but an early tendency to pull accidental wheelstands caused those plans to change. The rest, as they say, is history.

Notes: Jim drove this car at a match race against Bill Lawton at Connecticut on April 10. Unfortunately, he lost three straight to the Mustang. In the first race, his 9.71/143.31 lost to Bill's 9.07/153. In the second race, Jim fouled with a 9.77/143.08 losing to Lawton's 9.15/153. The last race saw Jim lose again with a 9.77/143.63 to Bill's 9.00/155. Another match race was run against Don Nicholson on April 24 in Atlanta. Don won the first race, but Jim came back to win the second race with a 9.03/163.53. In the final deciding race, Nicholson won with an 8.68/166. Thornton didn't do much better at Lakeland on April 30 against the "Seaton Shaker." He lost the match two straight to the Chevelle. These match races were run using their old Coronet. The final time the Coronet was run was at a match race against Hubert Platt at Aquasco on May 15. Thornton won the match three straight running times of 9.75/137 over Platt's 10.42. A 9.26/156 took the second race and a final 9.27/157 gave him the match victory.

Notes: Considered the first seven-second run in a funny car. We need to confirm this was a blown car. Replace aspiration and class if injected or carbs. This car debuted on April 2 at Detroit Dragway for a best of three match against Ed Schartman and his SOHC-powered Comet. Jim won the first race with his 9.02/159.57 beating Ed's much quicker 8.61/164. In the second race, Schartman repeated his times to win over the Dart's 9.28/152. In the third race, Jim's 9.17/158.92 lost to Eddie's 7.93/166. A week later (April 9), the "Ramchargers" were at Aquasco for a best of five against Billy Lawton's Mustang. Unfortunately, while running a losing 8.94 in the second race, Thornton also lost his engine and the team was done for the day. Jim was at the Cecil Factory Showdown on May 10. He beat Arnie Beswick who crashed in the first round, before the Dart failed to fire against "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the second round. The new car got its first win at the NASCAR race at Capitol on May 13. Jim had run as well as 8.43/164.83 on his way to the finals where he would get to run Schartman. But the race never came off as Eddie's Comet failed to fire so Thornton soloed to the win with an 8.46/167.28. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit on May 21. There he set Low ET at 8.47 and a final round 8.69/159.57 won when Doug Cook blew an engine in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. In June, Thornton faced Nicholson in a best of three match at Detroit. This was not Thornton's day as he lost two straight. In the first race, Don's 8.35/148.51 just plain outran Jim's 8.74/158.73 and in the second race, Thornton tried to cut the lite a little to close and fouled away an 8.25/166 while Nicholson took the match with an 8.20/165.
