His 7.59 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, far in front of Ted Thurber, who was second at 8.01. In the opening round, Billy's 7.61/196.93 beat Frank Britt's 8.02/192. Notes: Tidwell had a bad day at Lions on April 12. He was there for an eight-car show that had fifteen cars attempting to qualify. A 6.85 qualified him #5 in the field. In round one, he lost a blower belt, but his 6.95/198.23 still beat Frank Rupert in the "Black Plague" car. In the semifinal, he faced Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" won the race, but all eyes were on the "Kuhl-Tidwell" car as the motor blew at the top end of the track. Billy stopped the clocks with a 7.08/200 on the timers, but he was now riding in a fireball. Eventually, the dragster did a series of three rolls before coming to a stop. The "Woody" chassis did its job well, protecting Tidwell as he came out of it with only minor burns on his hands and neck. | Ran 6.913 at Dallas International Motor Speedway.

Notes: Billy Tidwell started the season driving this car for Leland at the NHRA Winternationals. They qualified #16 at 6.984/211.26 and made it to round three with some good runs. A 7.35/214.79 defeated Harry Hibler's 7.51/209 in round one. A 7.55/147 defeated John Weibe in round two when Wiebe spun out and hit the wall. Jim Davis got a holeshot win over Billy in round three, his 6.956/215.31 holding off Billy's 6.907/211.26. Billy also ran 6.94 at Bakersfield in this car. | And then an interesting swap occurred. Kelly Brown started the season in Lou Baney's SOHC Ford-powered car, but Brown and Billy Tidwell switched rides at the beginning of April. The switch was made because Baney was left to racing in southern California due to business commitments, and Kelly wanted to tour, as did Tidwell's car owner, Leland Kolb. Notes: Lisa & Rossi purchased this car as a dormant project initially commissioned by fuel pilot Fred Farndon. Roy Fjastad of Speed Products Engineering (SPE) built the car; he designed the rounded-wedge-shaped body (the story goes) with the input of Dan Gurney's aerodynamicists. Tom Hanna was responsible for the metalwork. A dramatic shot of the car dominated the cover of the May '72 issue of Car Craft with a short one-page writeup inside. Known variously as The Wedge (and by others The Flying Doorstop) the car was raced by Lisa & Rossi from 1972/74, when it was sold. It eventually became a bracket racer. Drivers included Bill Tidwell and Danny Ongais. - RT | Ran 6.400/236.84 at Orange County Nitro Championships.

Notes: Bill attempted to qualify at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, but his 6.38/225.56 best was good for the second alternate spot. He also failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals the following week at Pomona. Things went better at the Bakersfield March Meet where he qualified #27 in the 32-car show. That set up a first-round meeting against James Warren. Tidwell got out on Warren and his 6.35/224.42 beat Warren's quicker 6.30/232. Unfortunately, Billy hurt some parts and was unable to make the call for his round two meeting with Gary Beck. He failed to qualify for a few other shows before returning to Pomona. Tidwell’s 6.26/223.32 qualified #11 in the twelve car field at Pomona's NHRA Division 7 race in May. He lost early.
