Notes: At the NHRA Phoenix WWCS 1/27/85, Townsend lost to Cal Mounkes in the quarter finals after Townsend red-lighted. Townsend qualified #6 at The NHRA Winternationals with a 7.294 (.456 Under) & red lighted against Terry Gordon in Round 2. | At the NHRA WCS at Atlanta, Townsend set both ends of The A/A National Record with a 7.28/186.33. He defeated Ric Lancelotti in the Quarterfinals to earn a bye to the final, where he lost to Glenn Pierciey. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Townsend qualified #4 with a 7.279 (0.471 Under). He defeated #16 Qualifier Gary Johns in Round 2, Ran 7.24/187.78 to defeat Ron Baker in Round 3, & Defeated #13 Qualifier Gary Brown in Round 4 to earn a bye in the semis to race #3 Qualifier Bill Maropulos in the final, where Townsend's 7.24/186.56 would get him the Gatornationals Trophy.
