He also raced at the Turkey Trot National Open, where his 8.06/173.41 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Warren Johnson's 7.89/178. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.21/172.74 lost to Harry Del Prete's 8.22/171. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for the Little Guy National Open. A 7.96/170.45 qualified #4 (eight-car show). An opening round 7.98/169.49 beat Mike Cannon, and in the semifinals, his 8.00/163.93 advanced when Ronnie Manchester fouled. Velde faced Joe Lepone in the final, and unfortunately, he fouled, handing the win to Lepone. Jeff's next stop was at DeSoto for the Snowbird National Open. In the first round, his 8.04/169.17 advanced when Wyman Barnett broke. In the semifinal, he fell off to 8.11 that lost to Bubba Corzine's 7.91. |

Notes: The team was the first alternate at Gainesville but got into the show. They lost to Don Campanello in round one. The following week (March 20), they went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, Jeff lost to Roy Hill in the opening round of eliminations. Atlanta was his next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his 8.05/170.77 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to qualify at Columbus, where his 8.07/169.17 was the fourth alternate. The Gainesville 7.887/172.74 was the team's best times of the year. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983. |

Notes: Jeff did not race at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and the team failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he was the ninth alternate at 7.87. He also was unable to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Things went a little better for the team at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Only 20 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't so hectic. But Jeff did have a scare during qualifying. He and Bob Glidden were on a run when both Glidden's T-Bird and Jeff's Firebird got out of shape and came close as Jeff almost smacked into Glidden's door. But after that, a 7.88/175.78 qualified #14. In the opening round, he fouled against Don Coonce. Jeff's best ET was at Englishtown at 7.865, and he ran 175.78 at a few events. |

Notes: Jeff was the eleventh alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 7.59/180.36. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, a best of 7.63/180.63 also failed to make the show (ninth alternate). He did better at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.70/180.68 best was the third alternate for the show. He made the field at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 7.589/181.89 qualified #10. His first-round 7.69/179.96 lost to Butch Leal's 7.59/182. He also qualified at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 7.641/181.52 qualified #12. Jeff's 7.68/177.86 in the first round, advanced when Don Campanello fouled, and in round two, Joe Lepone also fouled against him, and Velde moved on with a 7.60/180.86. His run ended in the semifinals, where Leal's 7.54/184 put a stop to Jeff's 7.69/180.36. Unfortunately, it was back to not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 7.61/181.23 was the sixth alternate. The team did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but they were back on tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Things did not go well, as Velde's 7.74/178.60 was the ninth alternate for the show. Jeff also failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 7.64/186.29 was the twenty-second alternate. He also ran 7.64 (at 181.15) in a non-qualifier (fourteenth alternate) at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. The best NHRA times were 7.572 at the World Finals and 186.29 at Indy (DNQ). Did Jeff run 7.541 somewhere this year? |

Notes: The first six-second pass in the NHRA competition was on 1/27/74 at Winters at 6.98 at 199.11). Low qualifier at Indy 1974 at 6.99 (203.61). Also, 6.97 at Bowling Green and OCIR in 9/74. Interesting 203.7 speed for the record at BG. That time could not come up on a 3-decimal timing system. Ran 6.94 National Record at World Finals 10/74. Ken switched to late model hemi late in the year but ran a best of 6.93 at 203 with pure Chevy power. We need to confirm when Ken started using the Hemi. He ran Chevy power at least through Columbus. Veney got the Revell sponsorship (the only BB/FC ever sponsored by Revell). This was still the original Ken Cox car from 1973 with a new nose. Also, info that Veney ran 6.83 at 207 this year. We need to confirm. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Finished number two in Division 7 Pro Comp with 2000 points. |

Notes: Ken started his season at the OCIR season opener on January 17. It was an eight-car show with all cars running two rounds and the two lowest ETs advancing to the final. Veney ran 6.76/204.08 to beat Ken Randolph in the first round, but the Vega broke in his second race, and he could not race Sherm Gunn. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. His 6.91/203.16 qualified #2 behind Dale Armstrong's 6.79/206. Ken improved to 6.86/205.47 in round one to stop Jimmy Scott's 7.21/196. A second-round 6.91/206.89 advanced over Mark Niver's broken dragster. A semifinal 6.86/207.85 over Gunn set up a final-round meeting with Armstrong. Dale had the advantage as he had been running 6.7s throughout eliminations. But in the final, he lost a clutch and slowed to 11.57/55.28, while Veney picked up the victory with a 7.43/203.61. Ken kept up the pressure at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.73 (Low ET) at 209.30. An opening round 6.78/209.79 beat Rick Williamson. He stayed consistent with his 6.81/209.30, beating a tire-shaking Brad Anderson in round two. He got Top Speed of the Meet with his semifinal 6.78/210.28 to take out Jeg Coughlin's 6.95/197. He went up against Jerry Darien in the final, and Veney knocked off another 6.78/203.61 to get the victory over Darien's 7.38/191. He passed up racing at the Bakersfield March Meet but was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Armstrong, his toughest competitor, outqualified him there, but his 6.85/210.28 wasn't too far behind Dale's 6.78/204. Ken was out for another victory, and it showed. He dumped Vern Moat's 7.13/200 in the first round with a 6.98/208.81. A second-round 6.97/209.81 beat a tire-smoking Joe Amato, and in the semifinals, his tire-shaking 7.27/208.33 luckily advanced over Coughlin's troubled 9.36/83. He faced Bill Wallace in the final, and Bill's off-pace 7.69/148 lost to Veney's 7.15/211.26. His next stop was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. There, he actually got beat! His 7.26 in the semifinals lost to Wilfred Boutilier's 7.05. Ken also won the Cajun Nationals and the Springnationals, running 209.30 and defeating Kevin Siebert in the final with a 6.94/206. He qualified #4 at Indy (need times). In round one, he beat Jeff Rapp, 6.79/206.42 to 6.92/197. Ken ran 6.83/206.89 in round two as Wilfred Boutilier got crossed up and shut off. Round three saw Ken run 6.85/205.94 to defeat Chase Knight, who fouled. However, Ken fell off to a 6.92/202.70 in the semis, and that was enough to allow eventual winner Dave Settles to sneak by at 6.76/200. Beautiful race car. |

Notes: Second quickest at Indy only to Prudhomme's unreal 5.63. Second fastest that year only to Billy Meyer's 254.95 (if you discount a questionable 255 from Prudhomme at an AHRA race). The Indy 254.23 on September. 4, 1982, was the third entry in the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car. | Ken made his debut in fuel Funny Car at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. He knew his stuff as he qualified #11 with a 6.05. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.36 in the first round, that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.34. In August, he was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He lasted until the semifinals when his quicker 6.03 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.07 in the "Blue Max." |
