Notes: I'm adding this picture I've got of my Dad, Arlis K Tyner, with his and and his partner Gordon Riley's dragster. Gordon built the engine, my dad Arlis did the driving. They both worked on the dragster. Not sure what year this photo was taken, but it's of the same dragster referenced here. I went over this with my Dad and was also able to correct a few details.

Notes: Jess Tyree's new Firebird used a 120" wheelbase chassis built by Leiby and Tyree. The engine was a '63 Pontiac 421 Super Duty. It used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. The cam was from Sig Erson. The Hilborn pump pushed the 20% nitro mix into the GMC 6/71 blower. The power was transmitted to the Pontiac rear end with 3.90 gears by a Turbo-Hydro from B&M. The car weighed 1,970 lbs. The car was featured in Drag Parts Illustrated and, at the time of the article, was said to have run a best of 8.32/169.70. | On September 9, Tyree was at OCIR for a best of three match race against Frank Pisano. In their first race, the Firebird caught fire on the line, and Jess had to shut it down while Frank soloed for the win. The fire was minor, and the car was ready for its second race. In that race, Tyree's 8.99 beat Pisano's 9.59. In the deciding match, Tyree fouled away an 8.83 while Pisano claimed the match race victory with a 9.44. He was back at OCIR on September 30 for a match race against Fred Goeske and his "Hemi-'Cuda." The Firebird failed to fire, so Goeske won by default, making solo passes. Jess had a bad day on November 4 with this car in Tucson, Arizona. During qualifying for a race, the Firebird went up in flames. He was seriously burned. | Confirmed 8.82 at Carlsbad CA 1967. Notes: Mr. Pontiac. Real wedge on a square frame. Jess started his '69 season like many other funny car drivers at the Irwindale New Year's Day race, where an 8.02 qualified #11. He ran a first-round 7.96/180.72 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.65/193 in Nelson Carter's Charger. He attempted to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to make the field. A runner-up finish to Kelly Chadwick at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on August 30 past impressive for the pure Pontiac. He ran a first-round 7.66/186 over Dick Bourgeois (8.01/190), and he beat Marv Eldridge in the semifinal before falling to Chadwick's 7.77/185 in the final. Tyree also failed to qualify at the US Nationals at Indy on September 1, but a strong 7.578/198.67 wasn't too far off the 7.54 bump. He got into the race when Tom McEwen left the track to be with his good friend, John Mulligan, in the hospital. He improved to a 7.46/199 but lost to Don Schumacher's 7.22/204. He raced at an eight-car show at Lions on October 4, but a 7.41/189 from Johnny Wright beat his 7.91/182.92 in the first round. Another eight-car show was run at OCIR for their Funny Car Open on October 11. A first-round 8.30 lost to Rusty Delling's 7.58. On October 18, Jess was back at Lions for a Cavalcade race. An off pace 8.61/167.28 lost to eventual winner Kelly Chadwick's 7.53/177. Coke circuit ad from 1969 cited best times of 7.48/191.76 at the time, both of which were eclipsed at Indy.
