Notes: Pontiac built 13 lightweight 421 SD Tempests for the '63 race season - seven coupes and six station wagons. All were provided coupled to a unique four-speed automatic/transaxle. Arlen Vanke went a different route, buying his own car off a dealer lot, then installing the lightweight parts and the potent 421 SD, but forgoing the transaxle for a 4-speed stick and narrowed Catalina rear end. This combination, considered by many the formula for the GTO introduced the following year, secured him the A/FX class record in September '63, which he held into 1964. - RT
