Notes: Did Warren run this quick in 1964, or is this the confirmed 7.75 from AHRA Beeline in 1965? | James was at Lions on January 26 for an eight-car show. He qualified #3 with an 8.19/182.18, but he fouled away an 8.41/181.08 in the first round. Fresno held an interesting race on February 23. Warren unloaded off the trailer and ran 7.94/189.47. Four cars had run sevens in qualifying, and these four all ran together in a race on the dual lane track. Jeep Hampshire won over the other three cars with a 7.85/192 while Warren came in second with a 7.89/189.06. James reeled off another 7.78/189.47 in qualifying for the #2 spot in the field. He advanced past the first round with a 7.97/179.09. He raced Jeep in the second round and his 7.94/179 beat Hampshire's 7.98/193. The team didn't win, but everyone was sure they were there. He showed up at Lions again on March 15 for another eight-car show. James qualified #4 with an 8.34, but picked up to an 8.18/169.81 in his first-round win. A second round 7.97 (Low ET) at 182.54 beat an ailing Jim Ward. In the final, he met Earl Canavan. Earl's Lincoln broke, and Warren took the win with an 8.43/132.54. He was back there (Lions) again on March 28 using an 8.37 to qualify, but he failed to reach the finals. The UDRA held a Fuel Meet at Lions on May 17. Warren ended up the big winner over a strong field of Chryslers. He qualified #2 with an 8.09. He made it past the first two rounds easily, but then had a close race with Dave McKenzie in the semifinal. James's 8.20/187.10 beat Dave's 8.27/189. In the final, he met Paul Sutherland in the "Charger." Warren almost got a Low ET in the final with his 7.95/188.28, beating Paul's off-pace 8.64/188. He found himself in another final round on May 31 at Pomona for a sixteen-car show. He ran 8.13/186.32 in the first round, and an 8.11/187.50 advanced past round two when Rick Stewart fouled. In the semifinals, an 8.00/188.66 beat Mike Snively's 8.21/182. In the final, he met Sutherland's Low ET setting car, and he jumped the gun, fouling away an 8.10/187.50 and leaving Paul's 8.14/193 to go on for the win. Warren got a runner-up finish at the UDRA Fuel Meet at Lions on June 14. He qualified #4 with an 8.34, but picked up the pace with an 8.27/181.44 first-round win. In round two, he caught Lefty Mudersbach napping and won with an 8.30/178.92 to Lefty's 8.10/185. In the final, the Chevy broke, and Tom McEwen singled for the win. James was running really good at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont on July 19. In the first round, he ran a 7.85/183.28 over Wayne King, and he soloed in the semifinals when Chuck Griffith broke. In the finals, he was up against Jack Williams, and he fouled away another 7.85/175.60 while Jack motored on for the win with an 8.07/178. Pomona held an eight-car show on July 26. An 8.17/185.18 qualified Warren #5. In the first round, he ran an 8.20/191.08 that beat Jerry Baltes' quicker 8.10/185. He ran an easy 8.41/138.67 in the semifinals when Bill Alexander fouled away a 7.97/191. In the final, Warren didn't want to take any chances and foul, so he was late against McEwen, and it cost him the win. His 8.09/184.80 lost to Tom's 8.11/190. |

Notes: Warren started the '65 season by qualifying #2 with a 7.87/179.64 at Riverside on January 1 for the KFWB Drag Festival. The little Chevy had problems in the first round, and slowed to an 8.63/156.52 that lost to Kenny Safford's 8.04/199. On January 16, the "Warren and Coburn" team was at Lions for an eight-car show. James qualified with a 7.86/195.22 and won his first-round race with a 7.99/189.86 over Paul Sutherland. He lost in the next round. Warren qualified #9 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.75. An 8.36/141 advanced past a fouling Don Prudhomme in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but in round two he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to eventual winner Tom Hoover. The days were numbered for the little Chevy motor when the team rolled into Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. James attempted to qualify both the "Warren-Crowe" Chrysler powered car and the "Warren-Coburn" Chevy entry. The Chrysler car qualified while the Chevy's best of 8.03 came up short of the 8.02 "bump" for the show. A week later (February 13), Warren ran 7.85/191.08 to qualify #5 in a sixteen-car show at Lions. He beat Ron Hampshire in the first round, with a 7.92/189.06. In round two his 8.15/185.94 beat Pete Petrie's 8.43/185. In the semifinals he lost to Rick Stewart. The following day he was at Fontana for another sixteen-car show. Once again he qualified #5 with a 7.81. Once again he made it into the semifinals. He started by beating Val LaPorte in the first round, with an 8.01/178.57. That was his best run of eliminations as a 9.32/141 advanced past round two while in the semifinals, the Chevy came up ailing and his 8.27/149.25 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.69. The last time the Chevy was run was at Lions on March 27. He fouled, running an 8.50 against Hampshire in the first round. |

Notes: First 230 mph Fueler and 227.85 national record at Irwindale on 9/30/67. | Ran all time best 6.89 Top Fuel ET at OCIR in August '67 (6.89/223), but bettered by others at Indy '67. - Bill McLauchlan | Qualified at Pomona Winternationals '67 at 7.372/218.44. This team was on top of their game in '67. As mentioned, the 7.37 qualified #11 at Pomona. James advanced past a non-firing Ron Rolstad in the first round, with an 8.05/159.01, but in round two his 7.48/209.30 lost to Jerry Ruth's 7.40/212. On February 12 they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. James qualified #7 with a 7.30/204.08. He beat Gerry Glenn in the first round, with a 7.23/107.84, but as the speed attests, he lost a motor while winning and was unable to continue. Glenn got back in on the break rule and went on to win the race. Warren was runner-up at the first annual Stardust Open at Las Vegas. He lost in the final to Mike Snively in the "Hawaiian." He won the ninth annual T-Timers race at San Fernando on March 19. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.31 (Low ET). A first-round 7.48/212.26 beat Wayne King's 7.74/209. In the semifinal, he beat Larry Dixon in the "Fireside Inn" roadster. In the final, he ran a 7.37/212.76 (Top Speed) to win over Neil Leffler's 8.04 in the A&W car. On April 2, the team qualified #4 with a 7.56/206.42 at Fresno, but in the first round, the rear end let go. Warren and Coburn had a big day on April 16 at Fresno. They came off the truck and qualified with a 7.42/226.70. Before the end of the day, they hit 230.17 in eliminations. Unfortunately, they didn't win as Warren fouled out of competition. Lions held an eight-car show on April 22 and Warren set Top Speed of the meet at 223.88 during qualifying. In the first round, he beat Ron Hampshire with a 7.61/217.38. James lost in the semifinal to Bob Mayer. They finished runner-up at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 13. James qualified #1 with a 7.19, and he beat Steve Carbone's 7.37 in the first round, with a 7.26/222.22. In the semifinal, he set a 224.42 track record while beating Tom Toler. He lost to Mike Sorokin in the "Hawaiian II" in the final. He was runner-up again at Irwindale the following week (May 20). He got to the final of the eight-car show by running 7.35/207.36 over the Doss Brothers and 7.39/201.78 over Bob Mayer's 7.59/194. A red light ended his run in the final against Jeep Hampshire. On June 10, they were at Lions for an eight-car show. A 7.18 qualified #1 and a 7.09 (Low ET) at 217.99 won his first-round race, but they broke and were unable to run in the semifinal. Breakage was a problem for the team as they once again ran well at Lions on June 24. It was another eight-car show and in the first round, James ran 7.26/221.66 to win, but in the semifinal, he lost a motor and the race. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on July 8. Warren beat Leroy Goldstein in the first round, with a 7.27/221.66, but in the second round, his 7.76/150.50 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.37/219. On July 29, James set a new track record 6.96 at Irwindale. He won an eight-car event at OCIR on August 12. A final round 7.14/218.96 beat Dave Beebe in the final. At the NHRA US Nationals, they qualified #4 with a 6.87/222.76. James made it all the way to the finals of the 32-car show before losing to Don Garlits' 6.77/220 in the final with a 6.95/222.71. I'm sure that they felt a little better the following week (September 9) after Indy when they ran at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. They qualified for the show with a 7.25/219.50 (Top Speed). James won his first-round race with a 7.14 (Low ET) at 219.50 (again). A second round 7.28/206.88 beat Bob Hightower and a semifinal 7.41/180.72 took care of Ray Ayres. In the final, he won the event with a 7.31/201.34 over Jim Nicoll. Another win came their way at the final NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale on September 30. There they qualified #2 with a 6.99/227.84 (Top Speed). John Mulligan was first with a 6.96. They both made their way to the final. James got to the final by running 6.93/227.26 in the first round, over Mayer, a second round 6.89 (Low ET) at 227.26 over a fouling Goldstein. In the semifinal, a 6.99/204.54 beat Don Prudhomme. In the final, he beat Mulligan for the title. At Irwindale's second annual Grand Prix, the Warren and Coburn team looked like they were on their way to another win. They qualified #1 with a 6.89 in the 32-car field. He had two easy rounds before running a 7.03/221.12 over Ray Ayres' 7.16/218 in the third round. In the semifinal, he set a new track ET record at 6.78 at 221.66. But in the final, Bobby Tapia ran a 7.00/226 to beat Warren. They were at Lions for the Drag News All-Pro Race on October 21. It was another 32-car show. In the first round, James ran 6. 94/210.28 to beat Beebe's 7.38. In the second round, a 7.13/184.41 beat the "Mr. Ed" car. He took out Tom McEwen in the third round with a 6.89/218.44. But in the semifinal, he lost to Mulligan. Irwindale held a sixteen-car show on November 4, where almost 40 cars attempted to qualify. Warren qualified #1 at 6.93/227.84. He worked his way to the final by running 7.25/225.56 over a fouling Bob Downey, a 6.95/202.23 advanced past round two and a semifinal 7.19/225 got him into the final. In the final, he faced McEwen who was using a Tim Beebe built 392 Hemi for this meet. Tom ran a 7.21/221 in the final, but he lost to Warren's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.91/229. As the year was coming to an end, Warren made an attempt for another win on December 17 at OCIR. He qualified #2 with a 7.00/221.12, but failed to reach the final. |

Woody chassis, Tom Hanna body. | The wins started early for this team in '68. At an eight-car show at Irwindale on January 28, Warren qualified #4 with a 7.17/192.30. He went on to win by beating John Mulligan's 7.51 with a 7.07/218.96 and a 7.13/208.80 beat Tom McEwen's 7.19 in the semifinals. In the final, his 7.47/200.00 took the victory over Frank Pedregon, who fouled. On February 4, they won the "big one," the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. They qualified #4 with a 7.04/226.70. James picked up to a 6.870/230.76 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the first round, to beat Jerry Ruth's 7.16/220. A second-round 7.08/222.22 beat Bob Downey's 7.11/201, and in round three, a 7.03/221.66 sent Don Garlits' 7.25/212 packing. He had a close race with Dave Beebe in the semifinal, with his 7.26 advancing over Dave's 7.29 in Rick Crossley's car. Warren singled for the win with a 7.37/204.08 when Dwight Salisbury was unable to show after blowing his clutch in his semifinal win. On March 3, they were at OCIR for the PDA Championships, but they lost in the first round, due to a broken fuel pump. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.97 qualified #6 (only seven of the 32 qualifiers ran a "six"). James won his first two rounds with runs of 6.94 and 6.95. In the third round, he slowed to a 7.05/222.22 that almost lost to Pete Robinson's quicker 6.99/218. But you live by the sword; you die by the sword as in round three, his quicker 7.12 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.15. The 230.96 was reported at Riverside on 3/24/68. It was likely a 230.76, but we'll keep what National Dragster reported. |

Notes: NHRA says that this was the fastest speed of 1969. We had Garlits at 240, but that was likely a match race or AHRA time. We need to verify all and determine the facts. Ran 7.13 Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship and 6.80 at Dallas International Motor Speedway in 69. | James Warren and Roger Coburn didn't have one of their best seasons in '69, but it definitely wasn't one of their worst. If John Mulligan didn't claim Top Speed, this team probably did. James didn't make it very far in eliminations at the AHRA Winternationals, but he did set Top Speed at 221.67. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran a winning 7.19/205.47 in the first round, but in round two, a 7.14/214.49 lost to Mulligan's 6.86/222. The Warren and Coburn team failed to make the show at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. That was a tough field to make with 35 cars trying for the eight open positions so they towed over to Lions for an eight-car show. They set Top Speed in qualifying #2 with a 7.06/222.22. In the first round, James raced eventual winner Carl Olson and lost when his blower belt broke. It was a close race until it broke with Olson's 7.25/219 beating his 7.33/177.51. The following week (February 16), they were in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. Unfortunately, they lost to Hank Westmoreland in the first round. At their hometown track for the Bakersfield March Meet, the hometown heroes took a first-round loss when Warren's 6.98/222.22 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.85/217. The following week (March 8) found them at Lions for an eight-car show. Warren qualified #4 with a 7.09 and he only ran 7.62/140.18 in the first round, but it was enough to advance when Dave Beebe smoked the tires against him and shut off. In the semifinals, he ran even slower (8.90), but he won again when his opponent Carl Olson went into a wheelstand and shut off. This put him into the final against Tom McEwen. James ran his best of the day, a 7.01/225.00, but he was good for the runner-up spot to McEwen's 6.78/215. The team rebounded by winning the seventh annual Fresno Winter Race of Champions. James set Top Speed at 224.43 and in the final beat Gerry Glenn's 7.30/192 with a 7.21/217.90. At Riverside for the HRM Championships, James qualified #23 with a 7.13 in the 32-car field. He fouled in the first round, giving Steve Carbone a freebie into round two. On March 29, they were at OCIR again for the final All-Pro race. James made up for his non-qualifier at the last OCIR race by qualifying #1 with a 6.90/221.66. But the first-round blues persisted when Kelly Brown, driving Lou Baney's car, beat him with a 7.01 while Warren shut off. On April 12, James ran a 6.87/225.00 to qualify #7 in an eight-car show at Lions. He lost to Tom McEwen's 6.82/217 in the first round, with a 7.05/221.12. James lost to Brown again, but this time in the final at OCIR's Fuel Tournament on April 26. The Warren and Coburn car was off at this meet running a 7.73/189 and a 7.27/215.82 to get to the final. In the final, his 7.25/162.45 lost to Brown's 6.84/205 Ford effort. Another runner-up finish followed at Irwindale on May 3. There James ran a 7.10/216.34 in the first round, over Bob Williams and in the semifinals, a 7.23/171.13 beat an out of shape Glenn. In the final, Warren fouled and handed the win to Gary Cochran. The following week (May 10), they were at Lions for an eight-car show, but once again they lost in the first round, when Ron Manke's 6.81/227 beat Warren's 7.02/213.27. On May 17, they showed up at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. A new reverser had been installed and the car got some looks when, after his burnout, James put the dragster in reverse and backed up to the line. He got past round one when Sam Davis in Bill Martin's "400 Jr." fouled. But in round two, James fouled against Brown/Baney. A big win came their way on May 24 at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. James set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.86/225 over Jack Ewell. In round two, he set Top Speed with a 6.87/225.56 beating Brown/Baney at 6.99/213. In the semifinals, Warren advanced when Westmoreland failed to fire Don Johnson's "Beachcomber." Warren waltzed into the win in the final when opponent Larry Dixon blew his engine on the line. Fremont hosted the NHRA Division 7 race and more than 40 cars that showed up to qualify for the sixteen spots. James set Low ET at 6.83 and ran 6.8s in eliminations. A 6.89/222 beat Jim Dunn in round two while in the semifinals, a 6.85/214 beat Dennis Baca. He was to face Butch Maas in the final, but as the two were fired up and staged to race, it started raining and the race was canceled. Both teams got the full NHRA points. At Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals, James used a 6.91/218.44 to qualify 21 in the 32-car show. A first-round 6.90/222.22 beat Tom McEwen and in round two, a tire smoking 7.60/135.33 beat Dave Chenevert's 7.56/174. In the third round, James fouled against Don Prudhomme. At Irwindale's Fourth of July race, Warren qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.98. He made it to the final after winning a coasting contest in the semifinals with Butch Maas when both cars shut off. He had earlier set Top Speed of the meet at 226.70, but in the final, he lost to Cochran. The following day (July 5), the team was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Warren got beat by Maas in round two, but Butch blew his motor while winning, so James was reinstated for the semifinal where he fouled against Tommy Allen. One week later (July 12), he was at Irwindale for the second annual "Race with a Reason." He beat Billy Tidwell in the first round, but lost before the finals. At the big 32-car PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19, James qualified #12 with a 6.94. He lasted until the second round when he fouled against Mulligan. |

Notes: Roger Coburn and James Warren had been racing together since the early sixties.1970 proved to be a challenging season for the team. They started the season at Fremont for the New Year's Day Championships. Warren ran 7.03/222.76 (Top Speed of the meet) to qualify #9. He met low qualifier Gary Cochran in the first round, and just off the line, the car got out of shape, and James shut off. On January 6, they were at Sacramento, but in the first round, Warren's tire-smoking 7.87/145.39 lost to eventual winner, Don Argee's 7.00. On January 26, they were at Irwindale for an eight-car show. Once again, James had trouble in the first round and shut off, giving opponent Dave Condit a free ride into the semifinals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, 90 cars showed up, and James qualified #11 in the 32-car field with a 6.90, but he lost early. This time in round two, eventual winner Larry Dixon got a solo when Warren failed to show. Fremont had 66 cars attempt to qualify for its sixteen-car field for the Northern Nationals. Warren got into the show, but he lost to Dennis Baca in round one. Things had to turn around for the team, and they did at Fresno's Winter Race of Champions. There Warren defeated Vic Brown driving the "Mr. Ed" car in the final with a 7.22/219.50 (Top Speed) over Vic's 7.27/206. Things seemed better after that until they arrived at OCIR for its third All-Pro event on February 22. It was an eight-car field, and they failed to qualify on to their home turf, Famoso, for the Bakersfield March Meet. There it was apparent just how "off" they were. James ran 7.09 to qualify #30 in the 32-car show. In the first round, Gary Ritter broke against him, so Warren took it easy with a winning 8.53/141.50. In the second round, Jerry Ruth broke, so Warren advanced, but in round three, a 7.17/209 lost to Tony Nancy's 7.03/213. This was not a good showing. Another first-round loss came at the San Francisco National Open at Sears Point on March 15. He qualified with a 7.03. But in the opening round, Warren shut off to an 8.08 that lost to Tommy Larkin's 7.27. They failed to qualify at the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28. Irwindale held an eight-car show on April 11, and Warren qualified #7 before shutting off and losing to Cochran in the first round. On May 16, the team got a big win over a sixteen-car field at Irwindale. A first-round 7.24 advanced when Rod Dunne fouled while a 6.78/223.88 beat Dick Rosberg's 7.01/210 in Mike Kuhl's car in round two. In the semifinals, James 6.95/205.94 beat Hank Westmoreland's 7.07/214. This put him into the final against Cochran. Gary fouled, and Warren eased to an 8.38/115.08 for the victory. The following week (May 23), they were back at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. Once again, they ran well. A 6.94/201.78 beat Rosberg in round one, and another 6.94 at 222.76 beat Frank Pedregon in round two, but he shut off early in the semifinals, losing to Bill Alexander. On June 13, Lions held its All-American series race. It was another sixteen-car show, and Warren and Coburn ran well. A 6.98/220.04 in round one defeated Les Allen's 7.18/210. In round two, Warren advanced over a fouling Jack McCloud. He sped up to 6.88/222.22 in the semifinal to cover Bob Hightower. He faced Bob Ivett in the final, and James had handling problems and shut down to 7.90/110.02 in a runner-up finish to Ivett's 6.84/198. A week later (June 20), the team was back at OCIR for its March of Dimes race. Unfortunately, Warren fouled in the opening round against Gerry Glenn. Back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships, a blown engine against Dave Uyehara ended their chances in the first round. More problems the next day at Irwindale kept the pair from competing at its Fourth of July race. The team's next stop was at Lions on July 11 for the AHRA Grand American race. Once again, problems set in, and James shut down to 7.27/146.10 in a losing cause against Kelly Brown in the first round. The big 32-car PDA Championships was held on July 25, and Warren didn't hang around long as he fouled against Dave Hage in the opening round. Another first-round loss came at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships held on August 1. His 6.97/217.90 (Top Speed) lost to Joe Lee's 6.95/189. | Warren captured his second "Irwindale Grand Prix" title in October with a best run of 6.68-230.17 mph (per 10/16/70 ND). The paper also notes that "they have switched back to their 'old' car, which was a terror in 1967 and 1968." -- RT | Best NHRA national event times of 6.848/214.28. |

Notes: The team ran two cars this year and two NHRA national events. The front-engine car ran at the Pomona Winters and the rear-engine car ran at Ontario. The new rear-engine car definitely ran at Lions on 11/13/71 and hit a 6.50/223 and 6.60/222. James qualified #20 at Ontario at 6.822/208.81 and lost in round one to Larry Dixon Sr., 6.68/200.44 to 6.74/213.27. | I don't know when they first ran it, but they first ran the Gilmore RE with a '92 before going to a Waterman late model and new Woody car, and the Div. 7 Championship good times rolled from '72 to '76. - Joe Moore |

Notes: The Warren and Coburn team was at OCIR on January 2 for the Opening All-Pro race. Warren qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Don Moody. The two had a great race that saw James' 6.54/227.84 get the measure of Don's 6.59/222. Unfortunately, the team hurt some parts, and Moody could replace them on the "break rule." They were at Lions on January 28 for its Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, James hurt the motor on a 6.44/231.36 pass that beat Dennis Baca's 6.47/229. The team was unable to repair in time for their race against Jeb Allen in round two. The next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Warren qualified #17 for the 32-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Don Garlits in the opening round. Both had a hard time getting traction, but Warren recovered first, and his 6.95 beat Garlits' 7.26. After taking out the low qualifier, you would think that Warren would have hung around a while in eliminations, but nope, he got dumped by Dwight Salisbury in round two. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, he qualified #2 with a 6.46 behind Clayton Harris' unreal 6.24. A 6.47 in the opening round beat Allen's 6.63, but once again, the car broke and was unable to be fixed in time for round two. Jeb was reinstated. The team was the favorite at their hometown track for the Bakersfield in March. 75 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field, and Warren's 6.69 qualified #7. Randy Allison lost fire in the first round, and Warren made an easy pass to advance. He then beat Bob Noice in round two before losing to Salisbury in the third round. Shortly after that, they went to Irwindale for its first Top Fuel show of the year. James set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.64 at 205.94, but he failed to reach the final. James ran and 6.481/197.80 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge. James finished first in Division 7 points, the first of four division points wins. He also ran 6.21 at Irwindale. He also ran at the Last Drag Race, Long Beach CA 12/02/72. James did not set the national event series on fire despite his toughness within the division. He qualified #17 at Pomona at 6.772/220.04 and upset #1 qualifier Don Garlits in round one, 6.95/215.31 to 7.26/223.32. But Dwight Salisbury took him out in round two, 6.64/227 to 6.75/215.31. James' next NHRA national event was the World Finals at Amarillo in October. He qualified #6 at 6.70 (no speed) and defeated Divison 2's Charlie Moulder in round one, 6.55/213 to 6.86/212. The eventual winner (and thus, world champion) Jim Walther took him out in round two, 6.42/225 to 6.56/196. James 6.35 was the ninth alternate at Ontario, a far cry from the eventual 5.90s that it took to win. |

Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. The 5.883 was the low qualifier at the 74 World Finals. Also 5.94/241.93 low qualifier at 74 Winters. | Started the season on January 12 for the Irwindale Grand Premiere. There was no qualifying as starting positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars were members of the Cragar five-second club. Unfortunately, James shut down early in his first-round race with an 8.48 loss to John Stewart's wheelstanding 7.62. He then went to Pomona and qualified #1 as mentioned above. A first-round 6.01/230.17 beat Jim Murphy's off pace 7.05, but Jerry Ruth's 6.27/202 beat his 6.43/162 in the second round. The team loaded up and went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Warren qualified #11, but he lost to Billy Tidwell in the first round. On March 17 at the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, a 6.38 qualified #3. A first-round 6.18/230.27 beat Frank Bradley. In the second round, a 6.26 beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.34. In the semis, they lost a motor at half-track, leaving Dennis Baca a 6.21/234 winner. On April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American race, James set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 6.06. That was pretty good considering 42 cars were going for 16 spots. He ran 6.22 and 6.14 in the first two rounds before exploding a supercharger in the semifinal against Dan Richins. He still advanced because Dan fouled. In the final, a 6.35/223.88 was a bit short of Don Garlits' 6.24/239.36. 6.29 230.17 1974 NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: Won Division 7 four times, 72/76. Also 5.832 at Fremont 5/75 and 5.922/226.70 Low Qualifier at Bakersfield 75, 5.922/226.70 and 5.80 and 5.84 at Ontario World Finals 75. | Started the season on Jan 5 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. Thirty cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Warren qualified #1 with a 6.05, almost two-tenths better than the second qualifier. He advanced past the first-round when Danny Ongais lost fire and a second round 6.04 beat a tire-smoking Gary Read. In the semis, he got another easy ride when Tom Toler lost fire. But a final round Low ET and Top Speed at 6.01/239.36 over Walt Rhoades' 6.18/236 proved it was no fluke. The team then set Low ET of the meet at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.10 over Shirley Muldowney in the second round. James had also set Top Speed earlier at 237.46. In the semifinal, a 6.35/206.88 beat Gary Beck's 6.42/229. But in the final, Marvin Graham stopped him. After those runs, it was surprising that the team's best of 6.11 (third alternate) failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. But at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, they were back on top of their game, a 5.92/226.70 qualified Warren first. A first-round 5.90/217 advanced when Don Ewald fouled. In round two a 5.93/233.16 beat Tony Nancy (6.15/221), and a third round 5.91/229 beat Larry Dixon's Chevy. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.87/235.60 over Gary Ritter. In the final, another 5.91 at a Top Speed of the meet 243.24 gave James the title over Jeb Allen's 6.13/235. Another win in March came at the AHRA Grand American West Meet at OCIR. Warren qualified #2 with a 6.21/214.79. He again set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.10/234.37. He beat Bob Noice in the final. He didn't race at many IHRA events, but he did attempt to run the Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood, but they failed to qualify. Early in May, he won the Irwindale "Fox Hunt" race, beating Walt Rhoades in the final. Also in May, at Fremont for the Northern Nationals, Warren set Low ET of the meet in qualifying with a 5.83/237.46. A first-round 5.99/238.09 beat Rhoades' 6.19/234. In round two a 5.96/232.55 beat Dennis Baca. He met Frank Bradley in the final. A 5.93/234.98 defeated Frank's 6.00/242 for the victory. In July, he ran 6.01 to Rick Ramsey's 5.95 to take runner-up at OCIR's Nitro Championships. James ran his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals at Ontario with a 5.780/247.25 during eliminations. |

Notes: Won Division 7 four times from 1972/1976. Also ran 5.88/238.72 at OCIR 2/76. Ran 5.853/244.56 at Indy, 5.851 at Seattle, and 5.855/244.56 at Ontario Finals 11/76. Won Beeline Dragway Phoenix Winter Classic with a 5.97/241.28. | Warren started his season at the New Year's Day race held at Ontario Motor Speedway. He qualified #2 for the sixteen-car show with a 6.08/223. He got a solo in the first round, when his competition, Walt Rhoades, failed to show. A 5.99 (Low ET) run at just 202 advanced. In round two, his 6.03/213 beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.22/224. In the semifinals, he got out on Denver Schultz, and his 6.10/204 beat the quicker 6.09/227 of Schultz. He faced Flip Schofield in the final. Flip had not even qualified for the field, but he got in when another qualified car broke before eliminations. It wasn't much of a race in the final as Warren started the new year with a win running 6.05/233 over Schofield's shut-off 7.49/119. The team next went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. He qualified #8 with a 6.24 and came back out to try and improve his position. Unfortunately, he lost a motor and was unable to repair it for eliminations. It didn't take the team long to rebound. On January 25, the Phoenix Winter Classic was held at Beeline. Warren qualified #1 with a 6.02/241.28. An opening round 5.97 (Low ET) at 239.36 beat a tire-smoking Jim Plummer. In the second round, Gaines Markley's early shut-off 8.16/106 lost to Warren's 6.18/218.44. Herm Petersen also went up in smoke against him in the semifinals, and his 6.03 advanced into the final. He faced Gary Beck, but just like all his other opponents, Gary also had problems and smoked the tires, coasting to 15.41 in a runner-up finish to Warren's 5.99/241.28. The team was stout during this period. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a strong 5.92/242.58 qualified #6. He beat Salisbury in round one, and a second-round 6.00/233.76 beat Beck, who crossed the centerline. His 6.11/236.22 made it look easy in the semifinals as he took out Tom Kaiser's 6.27/212. He ran against Frank Bradley in the final. Bradley even had lane choice with his semifinal 6.09. James tried hard, but his 6.01/241.28 finished runner-up to Bradley's 5.93 at the same speed. Still, it was another strong showing for the team. The "Warren-Coburn" car was one of six dragsters to run at OCIR's East vs. West meet. All cars were to run three races, with the winner being based on wins. Warren beat Marvin Graham in his first race with a 5.88/238.72 (Low ET and Top Speed). Shirley Muldowney fouled against him in his second race, but he still passed her 6.49/182 with a 6.27/171.42. He went undefeated by running 6.02/215.82 over Jeb Allen's breaking 6.77/151. He was easily declared the winner of the race. The next day (Feb.22), they were at Fremont for its East vs. West meet. James didn't do as well here. In his first race, Larry Dixon's 6.27/225 beat his 6.58/196.93. He did beat Muldowney in his second race with a 6.24/187.11, but the car broke in his third race, and Muldowney soloed at 6.18/227 to win. He wasn't out of the winner's circle long as the next stop for the team came at the Bakersfield March Meet. The hometown favorites qualified #6 in the 32-car field with a 6.06/237.46. In round one, his 6.03/230.17 took out Gary Hazen's 6.30/203. A second-round 6.00/224.43 advanced as Chevy pilot John Rodeck lost with a 6.99/154. Round three saw a big matchup against Don Garlits. Warren took this one easily, running 5.95/235.60 to put "Big Daddy's" 6.50/184 on the trailer. In the semifinals, a 5.90/242.58 (Top Speed) dropped Salisbury's 6.50. This put the team into yet another final of the relativity new year. The final wasn't much of a race as his opponent, Tony Nancy, shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Warren soloed for the win at 5.95/221.67. Another win came at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Warren qualified #5 at 6.06/235.60. An opening round 6.23/241.93 beat Larry Petit's close 6.23/229. In the second round, his 6.19/234.37 beat low qualifier, Beck's 6.31/223. He got some revenge on Bradley for his Pomona loss by stopping him in the semifinals with a 6.20/239.36 to Frank's 6.29/201. He faced off with the Chevy ace, Jim Bucher, in the final. A final round 6.24/236.22 beat Bucher's 6.45/227 and gave the team another victory. James set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 Opener on March 28 with 5.83/243.24 times. There were only two 5-second qualifiers, and the other was Dixon way back at 5.99! He cracked the only "five" in eliminations, running 5.97/235.60 in the first round, to beat Salisbury's 6.43/207. But just when it looked like he would dominate the race, the car broke in round two and slowed to 10.55 in a loss to Dave Braskett, who advanced with a 6.24/226. |

Notes: Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. The new year didn't start the best for Warren. He was at Irwindale's New Year's Day race for a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney. Unfortunately, he lost three straight to the lady. He ran 6.28/210.28 at PRO Beeline, Arizona, but we don’t have anything, but Friday qualifying results from that race. James went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.002 and he beat Rick Ramsey in the first round. The car came up ailing in the second round and he lost to eventual winner Jerry Ruth. James then went on to Sacramento where he won the Race of Champions event. Another win came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The Warren and Coburn team always ran well here and '77 was no exception. James qualified #1 for the 32-car field with a 5.77. In round two, he set a track record 5.75. In the final, he faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and on this day, there was no denying Warren as his 5.83 buried Garlits' 6.09 for the title. Things didn't go nearly as well the following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #4 which was pretty good, but in the first round, against Grant Stoms (who he had covered), he pulled his 'chute early and Stoms came roaring past for the win, 6.26 to 6.28. On March 27, he won the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Fremont. Warren set Low ET at 5.90 and in the final, a 6.04/199.55 took the victory over Denver Schutz. The team was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. James qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Richard Tharp who was driving for "Candies and Hughes.” In their race, Warren had linkage problems and Tharp went on to win the event. At the next NHRA event, the Springnationals at Columbus, things went even worse as the team failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show. It was then off to Sacramento for the third NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.14 qualified #5 for the eight-car field, meaning he would have to run low qualifier Dennis Baca in round one. Baca set Low ET of the meet in their race with a 5.93/237 while Warren got sent to the trailer with a 6.31/186.34. At the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville, a 6.34 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. A 6.37/213.69 covered Shorty Leventon in the first round, but he lost soon after. Best NHRA National event times were 6.002 at Pomona and 241.28 at Indy on 9/04/77. |
