Notes: Willie's beautiful maroon roadster was an unblown Chrysler speedster at the beginning of the season. Drag News (3/14/59) reported that "this amazing roadster runs right up amongst the big blown machines and does its share of winning." At the Santa Ana race on Mar. 8, Willie won the A/R class with 11.30 at 133.39 mph. On Apr. 5 at Santa Ana, they won the A/R class with 11.40 at 127.66 mph. A week following, on Apr. 12 in Santa Ana, they took an A/R class victory with 11.31 at 125.00 mph. A missed shift during eliminations spelled an early exit. At Santa Ana on May 10, Willie took a class win with 11.14 at 130.30 mph. They lost during top eliminator rounds to Greico & Clark's B/D. On July 19 at Lions, they won the A/R class with 11.13 at 137.40 mph. They then installed a blower on their Chrysler motor to be more competitive in their class. Notes: Willie was at Irwindale on June 4 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with an 8.69 and in the first round, his 8.77/181.08 beat Gary Essman in the "Magic Muffler" car. In the semifinals, an 8.80/181 beat Henry Harrison driving the "Beaver Hunter." This put him in the final against Dale Emery in the "Pure Hell" car. Unfortunately, Bosch fouled away an 8.88/175.06 while Emery got the victory with an 8.92. |

Notes: Willie had quite a time at Pomona for the NHRA Pomona Winternationals. He won the AA/FA class, but had to get out and push the roadster when his competition broke. In the Super Eliminator class, he beat Bill Lawton's Mustang in the first round, with an 8.63, but in round two once again the roadster broke. Fortunately, his competition fouled so Willie got out and pushed it through again. His ETs on the two times he pushed were 144.65 and 143.45! He was unable to run the next round as he had damaged the motor. |

Notes: Wild Willie Borsch with the "Winged Express" ran the first 200, a 200.44, in 1967 or '68 at Lions. — Rod Hynes. | Also, AA/FA class winner '68 NHRA Winternationals ran an unreal 7.29. This would have qualified Willie #32 for Top Fuel. He ran Super Eliminator, lost the first-round. | Finally, the NHRA AA/FA record at the end of 1968 was held by Dale Emery in the Pure Hell at 7.68/208.80, so Willie's time was pretty incredible. | Borsch started his season at Irwindale on January 14 for an eight-car race. He qualified #2 with an 8.17/185.65 and an easy 8.63/175.78 advanced in round one, but in the semifinals, the roadster wouldn't keep its front wheels on the ground, and even though he still legged it though to 8.27/184.80, he still lost to Butch Pipins' 8.17/190. Willie was at OCIR for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars made three runs. Borsch ran 7.85/189.96 in his first race, but he lost to a quick-leaving Frank Pisano at 7.93/182. In his second race, his out-of-shape 8.17/187.50 lost to Steve Bovan's 7.85/194. He ran his worst time in his final race, losing to Fred Goeske's 8.12/180 with an 8.87/131.38. |

Notes: 1969 NHRA Winternationals, Springnationals, NHRA Nationals entry, Class Winner at Springnationals at Dallas. 7.54 at Irwindale, 202.70 at OCIR. Borsch won over an eight-car field at OCIR on March 15. He qualified #4 with an 8.17/162.45 and then ran 8.45/187.10 over Bill Thurmond and 8.36/165.13 in the semifinals over Frank Harris' 8.63/177. He faced Chuck Horchar in the final, and an 8.44/184.80 got him the victory over Chuck's off-pace 9.40/144. On May 17, he was at Lions for another eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a track record 7.63 at 200.89 (Top Speed). In round one, his 7.75/198.67 beat Leon Fitzgerald's 8.13/196, and in the semifinals, another 7.75 at 178.21 advanced when Tom Ferraro shut off. He faced Horchar in the final, and Borsch got out of shape and slowed to 9.09 for the runner-up spot to Chuck's 8.41/176. Willie was runner-up to Sush Matsubara at an eight-car show at Irwindale on July 19. He beat the "Magnificent 7" in the first round with a 7.74/196.92, while in the semifinal, his 7.84/193.12 beat an out-of-shape George Hutchinson. On September 21, Borsch was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He lost to Bob Hankins' 7.52/193 in the first round, with an 8.07/186.32, but he got back in on the "break rule" when Butch Thurmond broke while winning his first-round race. In the semifinals, an 8.29/173.74 beat a sleepy 7.97/180 by Chuck Burch in the "Rat Trap." This put Willie into the final, where he was to rerun Hankins. Bob went into a wheelstand and shut off while the "Winged Express" ran 7.92/189.06 for the victory. A week later (September 27), he was at OCIR for another eight-car show. This time, he lost to Matsubara's 7.57/193 in the semifinals with a strong 7.64/204.98. Willie won the Fuel Altered eliminator at Irwindale's Grand Prix on October 4. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.54/199.54. On November 30, he was at Fremont for a sixteen-car "Combo" meet. Top Gas Dragsters, Junior Fuelers, and AA/FAs all ran together. Willie qualified #3 with a 7.67, and he improved to 7.53/195.22 in the first round over John Shoemaker. In the second round, he was to face Jim Brandy in the "Giant Killer," but as Borsch was pulling to the line, something in his steering let go, and he could not run. A week later (December 7), he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car Fuel Altered race. He qualified #7 with a 7.82, but he shut off on the line in the first round with no oil pressure. |

Notes: Borsch totaled his car at Michigan, and a week later, in July, he showed up at LaPlace in a new Logghe chassis car for a match race against the Burkholder brothers. One thing missing from the car at this race was the roll bar-mounted airfoil. In the first race, Willy eased the car to a bogging 10.31 that lost to Harry's 7.65. An 8.03 in the second race also lost to the brothers' 7.57, and in the third race, Willie got his new ride into the sevens with a 7.77, but still lost to Burkholder's 7.53. Qualified fourth at Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.313, although Mike Sullivan led qualifying in his similar car at 7.120. |

Notes: Wild Willie's Chevy-powered nitro funny car of 1973 was definitely not competitive on the national match race circuit. This was due to numerous minor "bugs." He spent most of the tour year sorting them out before getting any full passes worth recording. Being a master mechanic who could change his own pistons in his ex-Don Garlits tow truck in the middle of nowhere in the Arizona desert was certainly a plus. But changing injectors from Hillborn to Enderle, fuel tanks that were not adequately vented, losing blower belts, and burning pistons, among other things, almost every run, were some of his race car's problems. These constant disruptions prevented any match race wins. Despite the terrible year he was having, the worst of his NHRA top 50 driver career, The Wild Man lived up to his "handle." He surprised many of his opponents with great hole shots, come from behind "wins" to the eighth-mile mark :} And far out of shape two-handed driving, except when shifting, of course, somewhere in the mid-range. However, his funny car "act" with ultra wild, out-of-control smokey burnouts, sometimes in the other guy's lane, incredible wheels-up launches, and typical seat-of-the-pants driving was extremely popular with the fans then. In my opinion, his "Nitro Act" was worth more than several of the more popular and powerful Chrysler stroked Hemi Funny cars of that day who were making twice as much or more booked in money than him. Willie was match racing that year on less than a dollar, a shoestring, and a bucket of water. :} It was more like he was racing in the Funny Car Wars back in that day with nothing but a wing and a prayer. :} - Cliff Tarpy, aka Pete Allen - greenhorn crewman. |

Notes: Willie was in New England for the Eighth Annual Funny Car Nationals. Unfortunately, a 7.04/207 in the first round, lost to Fred Bickford's 6.90/196. Borsch was at Warner Robins for a best of three match race against Shirl Greer in August. It was reported that Willie was running a Donovan in the race coverage. Willie went into a wheelstand in their first race, and he shut down. In the second race, his 6.78/212 beat Greer's 6.80/207. The third race was never run as the weather became a factor. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. Also ran 7.99 at Milan. |

Notes: Willie drove two different cars during 1976. He started the year in the former Pee Wee Wallace driven "Black Stang" Mustang II which was repainted and renamed "Wild Willie." He ran this car until mid-summer and then switched to the "Walt's Puffer" Monza, which he drove through the year's end. The photo of the "Wild Willie" Mustang II was from March 1976 at the NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. | Willie was at Warner Robins at the end of March for the NHRA Division 2 opener. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Borsch ran 7.63/134.52 for the #5 spot in the show. He had troubles in the opening round and his 10.67 lost to Tom Prock. |
