Notes: Randy qualified #6 with an 8.90/156.25 at Irwindale's New Year Funny Car race. He lost in the first round. He was at Carlsbad on March 19 for an eight-car show where his 8.93 qualified on the "bump." Walls got a solo in the opening round when Ronnie Runyan's Corvette failed to fire. The same thing happened to Butch Leal in the semifinal; his 'Cuda failed to start. So Randy made another solo but had the transmission blow. He was supposed to run "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final but could not show. Randy ran 8.93/169.81 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. 2560 lb. car.

All cars were to run the opening round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing into round two. Randy's 8.55/165.13 advanced over a broken Gas Ronda. In the second round, his 8.65/164.53 lost to Norm Cowdrey's 8.15/166. He qualified with an 8.59 at an eight-car show at Lions on May 18, but a first-round 8.35/174.05 lost to Ronda's 7.91/177.

Notes: Walls debuted his new Nova late in '68 at Lions on November 16 for an eight-car show. His first-round 8.24/172.41 beat Ray Alley's 8.26/179. A semifinal 8.09/174.08 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.65/187.50. He qualified third at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine Meet, and a first-round 8.29/175.43 beat Ron Runyan's 8.67. A second-round 8.52/165 beat Bob Bedell's 8.82/171. A semifinal 8.49 by Fred Goeske stopped Randy's 8.80/173. OCIR's first All-Pro race of '69, actually run on December 29, 1968, saw 28 funny cars try to qualify for eight spots. Randy's 7.88/180.72 put him fifth on the grid, meaning he had to race number one qualifier (7.61) Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda. Walls advanced when John's car lost a rear end, but he fouled against Jim Liberman in the semis.

Notes: Randy Walls entered the Funny Car wars by purchasing Hayden Proffitt's old Corvair. The Corvair was destroyed at Irwindale in a crash with yet another Corvair, this one being the "Pisano Brothers" car being driven by Joe Pisano. Walls escaped without injury, but the car was demolished. He then built this Nova in two and a half months by himself. He built both the 116.5" chassis and the 427 Chevy engine. The engine used Howards rods, Jahns pistons, and a Crower cam. Valley Head Service did the cylinder heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and the GMC 6/71 was overdriven 27%. Walls was also responsible for setting up the blower. The 50% nitro was fed to the motor by Hilborn injection. Randy attempted to qualify his Nova (don't think he ever used the Corvair in '69 as the first OCIR All-Pro race for '69 was run in December '68 and he used the Nova there as well) at the second OCIR All-Pro on February 9, but his 7.90 failed to make the eight-car field. On February 16 at the Stardust Open at Las Vegas, he lost to Pat Foster's 7.90/192.30 in the first round. On February 22 for an eight-car race at Lions, Walls beat Gary Crane's Javelin in the first round, but he lost to Ray Alley in the semis. At the HRM Championships, he qualified fourteenth with an 8.11. In the first round, his 8.10/173.74 was no match for Dave Beebe's 7.88/192.71 in the Super Chief. At the final OCIR All-Pro on March 29, Danny Ongais' 7.53/192.30 beat His 7.99/177.51 in the first round. Ongais (7.63/184.80) beat Walls again in the first round, on April 13 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. An 8.05 qualified the Nova in the dreaded fifth spot (had to race number one qualifier). Irwindale hosted a sixteen-car show on April 26 and Walls ran a first-round 7.88/171.42 over Larry Fullerton (7.93/184.42). In the second round, Mike Van Sant's 7.82/190.66 dropped his 7.89/183.66. On May 3 OCIR held its second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. Randy's 7.78/183.66 qualified the Nova second on the GM team. In round one his 8.05/181.44 beat alternate Ron Runyan (8.36/180.72), who fouled. He also won his third round race (8.11/182.96) over Ray Alley who fouled away a 7.70/192.30. Randy was back at Irwindale on May 17 for an eight-car show where Rich Siroonian's 7.74/192.30 beat his 7.81/180.36 in the first round. At a Fremont race, still in May, Randy set Low ET at 7.79, but he failed to make the finals. At OCIR's Funny Car 500 on May 31, a 7.95/179.28 qualified his Nova in the top half (seventh) of the field. A first-round 7.72/187.50 advanced when Skip Hess fouled. Leroy Hales' 8.33/184.04 fell to Randy's 7.81/187.11 in round two and a 7.95/185.95 got him into the finals when Clyde Morgan (8.38/181.81) smoked his tires. Against Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian in the final, he ran a sub-par 8.49/178.57 to Reyes' long-gone 7.63/200.07. At the PHR Championships on August 2, Randy's first-round 7.69/180.72 beat Don Schumacher (7.86/191.08). In the second round, he beat Charlie Allen, but in the semis, his trans let go and he had to watch Fred Goeske make a single on his way to the final. On September 13, Nashville held its first King of the Funnies meet. Randy ran a 7.85 in the first round, to beat Gene Snow's quicker 7.75 (Low ET). In the semis, Ronnie Runyan's Corvair beat him. Marv Eldridge's 7.62 beat Randy's 8.17 in the first round, on October 11 at OCIR's Funny Car Open Race. But due to the break rule, Walls got back in and faced off with Eldridge again in the final with the same results. Marv's 7.56/187.50 beat his ailing Nova's 9.10/170.13. On October 25 at Lions for the East/West Championships, Don Schumacher's 7.49/188.67 put Wall's 7.59/188.67 on the trailer in the first round. Sears Point also had a North/South race run on November 2 and Walls ran well, but failed to make the final. On November 23, Irwindale held a 32-car race. Randy lost in round one, to Jake Johnston's 7.36/187.50 in Gene Snow's second car. On December 6 at OCIR for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with a 7.49/195.65 and beat alternate Ray Alley in the first round, with a 7.65/192.30. In the semis, he fouled away a 7.63/194.80 against Reyes' 7.53/195.22. The following weekend (Dec 14) at Irwindale, he failed to qualify. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ran 7.55 at Detroit - Mike Gagnon | Randy ran at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round. He was at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD, for a best of three match race against Roger Lindamood in June. Unfortunately, he lost all three races to the "Color Me Gone" Challenger. In July, he was at an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Larry Arnold in the first round, with a 7.49/189.06, but lost to Pat Minick in the semifinals. Randy was a die-hard Chevy supporter, but as the season progressed, he found it harder and harder to keep his "Rat" motor competitive on Nitro. Where a good run for Walls was in the 7.20s, the top Hemi campaigners were now dipping into the sixes. He had a bad showing at the second annual Rockford Manufacturers meet. He got out of shape and lost to Tom McEwen in his first race and his car came up ailing against Leonard Hughes in his second race. Walls was at Lions on October 24 where 25 Funny Cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Randy made the show and in the first round, he beat Arnie Beswick with a 7.30/204.54. In the semifinals, he lost a motor on a 7.61/200.44 pass that lost to the meet's eventual winner Dave Beebe. | Formerly listed 6.905/216, but that was run in March of '71.

Notes: Randy set Low ET in qualifying for an eight-car show at Lions on March 20 with a 6.90. He beat Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" in the first round, with a 7.04/191.89, but before he was to run eventual winner Dale Pulde in the semifinals, he found traces of Teflon from his supercharger throughout his engine. He was done for the day and Gene Conway replaced him on the "break rule."

Notes: Bill was at Atlanta Dragway in March for the NHRA Division 2 opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.45/213.27. He got to solo when Bubba Sewell shut down in the first round. Walsh ran 6.36/216.34 (Low ET and Top Speed)to advance. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and ran 6.37/215.82. He was the odds-on favorite to win in the final against Don Woosley, as Don's best had been his 6.51 in qualifying. But in the final, Walsh's car failed to fire, and Woosley got to solo for the win. A week later (March 17), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he qualified #1; this time, his 6.39/216.86 (Top Speed) led the field. A 6.49/213.57 defeated Mike Kosky's 6.60/209 in the opening round, and in round two, he used a 6.42/216.86 to beat Kirk Lawrence's 6.76/199. But in the semifinal, he fouled and shut off against Al Dapozzo. He was back in Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 6.48/212.36 qualified second behind Lee Young's 6.43. Bill set Low ET in round one, with a 6.42/214.38 solo that advanced when Dennis Forcelle failed to show. In the semifinal, he fell off to a 6.52/213.16 that lost to eventual winner Woosley's 6.45/215. Walsh then won the NHRA Division 1 opener held at Englishtown at the beginning of May. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.43/214.54. Another 6.43 at 214 beat Richard Boyd's 6.72/202 in round one, and a 6.48/212.01 stopped Bruce Horner's 6.62/206 in the semifinal. He went up against Jeff Jones in the final, and Bill won it quite handily with his 6.49/211.26 getting the victory over Jeff's 6.64/208. He picked up another victory at the second NHRA Division 1 race held at Cayuga Dragway on May 19. Only five cars showed, and Walsh qualified first with a 6.67/203.61. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round and went 6.60/211.51. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.52/213.01 that covered Al Kenny's 6.75/203. He faced Horner's tough Rodeck-powered car in the final, and Bill set Top Speed on his final run while winning with a 6.54/213.77. He started the month of June off right by winning the NHRA Sportsnationals. Bill set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.40/215.72. He took out Billy Williams' 6.68/211 in round one, with a 6.46/213.57. That was followed by another 6.46 at 213.57, beating Don Irvin's 6.61/189. He got the better of Woosley in the semifinal with his 6.48/209.20 taking out Don's 6.60/184. Kosky was his final-round opponent, and Mike's 6.56/212 failed to top Walsh's 6.46/213.46 for the money. There was just no stopping Bill in Division 1. He won the third race at Maryland International on June 9. Of course, he qualified #1 with a 6.38 (Low ET) at 211.76. He then got Top Speed to go along with it in round one, with his 6.56/212.26 defeating Jim Real. A 6.46/211.76 in the semifinal easily got around Richard Boyd's 6.70/203. He faced Jones in the final and covered him by over two-tenths, running 6.44/212.76 to win over Jeff's 6.71/204. Bill was really making it look easy as he also bagged the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. Although this time, he didn't set Low ET or Top Speed. He didn't even qualify first as that honor went to Dapozzo at 6.46. Walsh was right behind at 6.48/213.16. Once eliminations started, he took over. His 6.52/211.16 was the quickest run of the first round. Irvin had fouled against him. Woosley fouled against him in round two, and his 6.63/209.98 advanced. In the semifinal, Kosky's 6.64/209 fell to Walsh's 6.55/211.26. Forcelle was his final round victim, and a 6.53/210.08 covered Dennis' 6.76/202.
