Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.037/242.58. In the first round, his 6.125/233.76 fell to Raymond Beadle's 6.04/202 in the "Blue Max."Shortly after that (March 25), he was at Baton Rouge for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Dunn, who was driving the "Hawaiian." White won the match, running a best of 6.37/221 as Dunn found that the traction was not to his liking. White was back at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified #14 at 6.118/240.64. His 6.40/203 advanced in round one when John Force fouled, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Dale Pulde's 5.99. A 6.12/205 qualified #7 in the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, a broken driveshaft stopped his chance to advance past round one. Won at ADRA Grandnationals race at Dragway 42. Jim ran 6.050/202 at Gary US 30 1984. Jim was the third alternate at NHRA Indy with a 6.016/247.25, his best times of the year. The former Tom McEwen Vette was sold to Dick Moritz, Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore, Donnie Holbrook, and Troy Ray.

Notes: Jim White and car owner Dick Moritz were unable to race at either Darlington or Gainesville as the team was still getting their support truck and backup equipment ready. White was at Tulsa for the third race of the ADRA season, the Springnationals. He qualified #1 at 5.88, but he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Tom Hoover. Shortly after that (May 19), he was at Alamo Dragway for another eight-car show run in conjunction with the NHRA Division 4 race. His 5.98/219.00 qualified second to John Force's 5.91/237. But the team damaged the engine, and he could not run in eliminations. Don Sosenka replaced him in the field. In August, the team ran their first NHRA national event in Brainerd. They qualified #16 at 6.001/238.72 but lost in round one to Rick Johnson, 5.89/254 to a 14-seconde shutoff. Jim also qualified #16 at NHRA Indy at 5.838/247.38. In round one, he lost to John Lombardo, 5.78/252 to a 15-second shutoff. In Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals, Jim qualified #8 at 5.899/233.76. In round one, he beat Gary Ritter, 5.912/239.36 to 5.97/241. In round two, Rick Johnson got to him, 5.97/249 to 6.064/245.23. At the NHRA World Finals, Jim was the fifth alternate at 5.977/246.30. Speed might be from an ADRA race. Won Green Valley WWCS match race in debut with a 5.96 best. Photo from 1985 Nationals.

Notes: Jim was the third alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.102/236.34. He was running this car in Milan, Michigan, in the first week of July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified for the eight-car field, but his parachute fell out against Mark Oswald in the first round, who advanced with a 5.75/254. Jim was the #16 qualifier at 5.871/237.40 at NHRA Brainerd. He improved to a nice 5.706/240.19 to take out Raymond Beadle in round one. Don Prudhomme took him out in round two, 5.66/255 to 6.001/218.39. Photo from Indy 1987, where Jim was the sixth alternate at 5.841/239.04. The car was the former Bill Dailey Pegasus that he raced in 1986. White's family was in the carpet business hence the name. White only ran this car in the 1987 season before driving for Roland Leong.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Jim replaced Johnny West as the driver of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" entry for '89. The team started the season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.43/258.24. Jim cut a good light in his first-round race against Mike Dunn and his 5.46/258.10 beat Mike's better 5.42/269. In round two he beat Art Hendey with a 5.55/216.50, but as can be seen by his speed, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his semifinal race against Bruce Larson. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, the team qualified #13 and lost to Larson in the first round. White qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but once again he was on the trailer after the first-round. Things went even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where the team failed to qualify. The "Hawaiian" was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. Jim qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.54/251.32, but he smoked the tires to a 6.33/181.96 in the first round, that lost to Tony McCallum's 5.76/247. The team continued to have trouble qualifying for NHRA fields. At the Springnationals, White was first alternate with a best of 5.58/260.11. He managed to get into the show when #15 qualifier McCallum had a blower explode and destroy his T-Bird. Jim beat John Force in the first round. In round two, Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires against him and Jim's 5.70/253 advanced. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.64/237.52 qualified #11. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.63/78.78 that lost to Larson's 5.49/265. After that, it was back to the US at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The "Hawaiian" qualified #2. A 5.63/248.75 advanced past R.C. Sherman in the first round, but the Daytona broke on the line in the semifinals against Doc Halladay. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where they again failed to qualify. White qualified well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.68/255.53 for the #6 spot. He beat Gary Densham in the first round, before losing to Larson's 5.65 with a 5.78. It seemed as though the team found something as at Sonoma they qualified #5 with a 5.40/268.41. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.67/258.74. Jim then had problems and shut off to a 10.69 that lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.38/268. The good runs continued when at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Jim qualified #3 with a great 5.33/266.98. A 5.48/253.16 beat a tire-smoking McCallum in the first round, and in round two, his 5.50/258.77 beat Jim Murphy. He was in the semifinals at an NHRA national event for the third time this season, but once again the gremlins stepped in and he broke against Larson. On August 13, he was at Martin, Michigan, for its Wolverine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and all cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Jim ran a 6.03/246.21 in his first race over Ronny Young, but in his second race, he smoked the tires and shut off. His ETs were not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.45/267.69, but he slipped to an off pace 7.51/111.85 in the first round, that lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.68/256.

Notes: Jim White and car owner Roland Leong were at Firebird Raceway in January for its test and tune session. Crew Chief Wes Cerny was taking it easy with the car. The team made seven passes, with the two best being 5.64/193.59 and 5.70/186.57. On the last pass, an exhaust valve hung open, and there was a flash fire, but it quickly went out. Jim qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.55/228.19. A 5.50/258.24 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.27/262 in the first round. At the Arizona Nationals, White qualified #6 with a 5.38/268.65, and in the first round, he beat Jim Murphy. A second-round 5.41/270.02 lost to John Force's 5.26/279. The team kept on improving, and at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, Jim qualified #3 with a 5.31/249.30. Unfortunately, an off-pace 5.73/188.16 in the first round lost to McCulloch's 5.31/274. Everything seemed to be clicking at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Jim ran times of 5.38, 5.36, 5.34, and 5.28 to qualify low. His best speed was 267.45. But in round one, a left rear slick exploded and ripped apart the body. He got it stopped OK, but he lost to Glenn Mikres. At the NHRA Southern Nationals, Jim set a track record 5.22 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 263.92. He beat Freddie Neely in the first round before boiling the hides and losing to Paul Smith in round two. The next stop was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.29 qualified #4, and he lasted until the second round, where he overpowered the track and hazed the tires to a 5.58 loss to McCulloch's 5.40. The team then traveled to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. White's 5.60/258.32 qualified #8. He beat Frank Kramberger in the opening round, but the car broke on the line against eventual winner Force in round two. The team made it into the final at the next event, the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. A 5.35 qualified #2 behind Force's 5.30. These two would work their way into the final. Jim took out Johnny West in the first round, and a second-round 5.50/258 beat a tire-smoking Scott Kalitta. Mark Oswald fouled against him in the semifinals and White advanced with a 5.51/242. Force was about a half-tenth quicker throughout the race, and in the final, his 5.37/275 won over Jim's 5.49/261.55. It was then off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Jim qualified #2 with a 5.38/259.81. He beat Kalitta in the opening round, and a 5.53/253 beat Chuck Etchells' 5.65 in round two. But he came up against Force in the semifinals, and his 5.64/236.77 lost to Force's 5.46/267. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, White once again qualified #2. This time a 5.23/263.85 got him the spot. He beat Neely before smoking the tires and losing to Etchells in round two. He earned his fourth straight #2 qualifying position at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.58/247.45 was second to Force's 5.55/255. In the opening round, another 5.58/252.03 beat Richard Hartman's 5.73/219. In round two, Jerry Caminito had problems against him, and White advanced at 5.54/253.87. In the semifinal, his opponent, Tom Hoover, blew an engine and caught fire while Jim got badly out of shape but still got the win light. He faced McCulloch in the final, and once again, he got out of shape, shutting down to 7.53/110.10 in a runner-up finish to Ed's 5.45/260. Photo from 1990 Grandnationals, Montreal.

Notes: The first 290 mph Funny Car in the sport at Ennis 1991 with a 290.13 blast. Wes Cerny's 290 mph tuning skills on this car caught the attention of Kenny Bernstein, who hired him for the 1992 season, resulting in the sport's first 300 mph run. Photo from Indy 1991. | Jim qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with track records of 5.25/278.63. The team was running a new engine set-up that used Leonard Hughes cylinder heads with Wes Cerny's tune up. They actually qualified with their "old" engine and switched to the "new" combination for eliminations. A first-round 5.39/277.26 stopped Gary Litton's 5.58/259. In round two, Dominic Santucci lost to White's 5.36/273.63 and a semifinal 5.33/272.89 beat Mark Oswald, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Mike Dunn in the final. Their times in eliminations had been close, but White's 5.39/263.77 finished second best to Dunn's 5.34/275. The "Hawaiian" team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where, once again, Jim qualified #1 with track records of 5.34/274.72. The field was short, so White got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.35/274.72 (again!) He was flexing the car's power as that was easily Low ET of the opening round. In round two, he downed Ed McCulloch with a 5.41/255.39 and a semifinal 5.44/270.83 beat Al Hofmann, whose car broke an A-arm on the run. He came up against John Force in the final. White had been running a tenth faster than Force. Jim got the victory with a 5.54/271.90 when Force tried to match the "Hawaiian's" times and put too much power into it and smoked the tires. Jim continued to set track records at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.18 track record at 280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #1 for the third straight NHRA event. An opening round 5.39/273.47 beat Gary Bolger's 5.53/261 and a 5.38/276.66 beat Santucci's close 5.38/272 in round two. But in the semifinals, White blew an engine and slowed to a 5.70/193.88, losing to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.37/272. The team's combination didn't work quite as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jim’s 5.50/263.00 qualified #4 and he was upset in the first round, when Richard Hartman's 5.71/255 got the better of his 5.74/249.30. Jim's 291.82 at the World Finals was the Top Speed of the entire meet, including the Top Fuelers.
