Notes: Confirmed 6.629/221.67 from NHRA US Nationals 9/69. | John was at Lions on February 9 for an eight-car show, but he had problems and his best of 7.79 failed to qualify. Wiebe won a sixteen-car show at Continental Divide Raceway on April 13. He ran 7.54 and 7.51 in the first two rounds before stepping it up to a 7.47 (Low ET) at 191.88 over Joe McKee's 7.66/183 in the semifinal. In the final, he copped Top Speed of the meet as well with a 7.62/213.28, beating Doc Halladay's 7.89/207. Another win came at the Division 5 opener at Omaha Dragway on May 4, where he set Low ET in the first round, at 7.16 on his way to the final, where a 7.22/198.22 beat Bud Dabler. Another win came at the AHRA Southern Nationals in Memphis on May 31. A final 6.95/221.46 won him that title. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals at Dallas with a 6.80/231.36 (Top Speed). He beat Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.90/225.56, but he fouled against George Cox in round two. It was back into the winner's circle the following week on June 21 at Donnybrooke Speedway for the Division 5 race. Halladay fouled against him in the first round, and John ran an easy 7.39/163.93. In the semifinal, a 7.03/218.54 (Top Speed) beat Bob Stuart, who got crossed up. He ran a single at 6.90/218.46 for the win when Norm Gingrass had blown his motor while winning his semifinal race and was unable to repair it in time for the final. Fifteen cars showed up for the eight available positions at Oklahoma City on July 5. Wiebe not only qualified, but he also made it into the final. A first-round 7.12 beat Jimmy Nix, and another 7.12/201.34 beat Larry Brown in the semifinals. In the final, Wiebe's 7.14/221.12 lost to upstart Kenny Bernstein's slower 7.16 in Prentiss Cunningham's car. He suffered a rare first-round loss on July 13 at the fourth Division 5 race at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver. Mike Snively's 7.20/207 beat John's 7.35/198.66. Notes: The first car to use the experimental Ed Donovan Hemi. Quickest side by side race at Indy 1970 with John's 6.65 against Preston Davis' 6.93. John started the '70 season by winning the Fremont New Year's Day Championships over Gary Cochran. He qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.05, and in the first round, Hank Westmoreland fouled against him, and he advanced with a 7.63. Gerry Glenn lost a motor while racing him in the second round, and John's 6.95/207.84 moved on. In the semifinals, he beat Don Argee with a 7.05, and his final round 7.02/198.54 got him the victory over Cochran. He then ran at the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.76/216.86 over Carl Olson's 6.95/216. He fouled against Joe Lee in the semifinal. John reached the finals at the AHRA Winternationals on January 25, and in the final, he ran a 6.74 that was good for Low ET of the meet at 227.84 mph, but he lost to Don Garlits quick on the line, 6.92/220. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 1, nearly 90 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car show. Wiebe ran 6.86 to qualify #8, but he was beaten by round two. At the Fremont Northern Nationals on February 15, another huge field of TF'ers showed as 66 cars tried for the 16 available spots. Wiebe qualified and, in the first round, beat the "Mr. Ed" car with a 6.87. In round two, his 6.85/222.76 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.59/220. A week later (February 22), he was back at OCIR for the third OCIR All-Pro race. It was a tough eight-car show to make, but John made the show and then, in the first round, fouled away a 6.77/199.55 against Don Cook's 7.16/182. He was not at Bakersfield for the March Meet but was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American race being held the same day (March 8). Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals there. His next showing was at Sears Point on March 15 for the San Francisco National Open. He set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car show with a 6.79/218.60. A 7.06 in the first round, beat a tire-smoking Frank Bradley, but he fouled away a 6.93 against eventual winner Jerry Ruth in the second round. At the final OCIR All-Pro event, John went all the way. The final race was a sixteen-car affair, and Wiebe started his march by beating Leland Kolb's 6.99/202 in the first round, with a 6.76/205.01. He soloed with a 6.78/216.86 in round two when Norm Wilcox broke, and in the semifinals, his 7.11/167.59 advanced when Jerry Vargas blew an engine. He took on "Fireman" Jim Dunn in the final and won with a 6.80/213.27. | Also 6.59 at New York 8/29/70 and 226.70 at Dallas 10/15/70. NHRA national event best ET and speed were at Indy with an excellent 6.56/231.95.

Notes: The first car to use the new Ed Donovan Hemi. He was runner-up to Don Garlits's revolutionary new rear-engine dragster at the 1971 Springnationals in Dallas. John was also runner-up to Hank Johnson at the 1971 Supernationals in Ontario. Ran 6.530 at that race. Ran 6.493 qualifier at Indy, followed by a great 6.46/232.55 (Top Speed) blast that fell to Garlits' 6.32 in eliminations. In January 1971, set the AHRA speed record at 227.84. Ran 6.46 at Martin, Mich. | John started the season by debuting a new SPE-built car with a win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He qualified #6 with a 6.77 and a first-round 6.88 beat Bob Downey in the "Howard Cam Rattler." In the semifinals, a 6.87/217.91 beat James Warren's 6.97/220. In the final, he faced #5 qualifier, Larry Dixon. Dixon fouled, and John's 6.88/219.51 took the victory. On January 10, AHRA held its first Grand American race of the year at Lions. Wiebe qualified with a 6.73 and improved to a 6.61 in his first-round win. He had trouble and shut off in the second round, giving Don Moody the win. John ran 6.93/191.48 to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he fouled away a 6.79/214.28. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24, he lost in the first round, when his quicker 6.80/227.27 lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.84/206. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.84 qualified #18 in the 32-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with the #2 qualifier, Don Prudhomme. John ran 6.92, but he lost to the "Snake's" 6.69. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car field. John beat Gary Cochran in the first round, with a 6.68/230.17. A 6.73/231.36 (Top Speed) beat Dennis Baca in the second round. But in the semifinal, while doing his burnout, a rod let go, and he shut it down, giving Dwight Salisbury a solo into the final. Lions held an eight-car show on April 5, and he qualified #3 but failed to reach the final. He did reach the final at West Palm Beach on April 18 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. John beat some heavy hitters on the AHRA Grand American trail. He took out Steve Carbone, Don Garlits, and Jimmy King to reach the final, where he had to settle for runner-up when he fouled against Jim Nicoll.

Notes: John started the '73 season by qualifying #2 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere with a 6.39 behind Don Garlits' pole-winning 6.37. He found out before eliminations started that he had a cracked cylinder head and withdrew from competition. Dwight Hughes took his place in the field. He qualified #1 at the second OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.22. In the opening round, he and James Warren had a great race that saw Warren's 6.41/209 defeat his 6.40/219.51. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.21/234.37. A first-round 6.31/224.43 beat Denver Schutz's 6.60/215. But in round two, the dragster got sideways, and John eased off to a 6.74/158.73 loss to Ronnie Martin's 6.55/181. Shortly after that, he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took three weeks to run the race as it rained constantly. The track was also in horrible shape. On the first weekend (February 3), John's 7.34/197.36 qualified #28. By the time qualifying ended, his time had been bumped. But many other drivers were unable to stay due to prior commitments, so Wiebe got in as an alternate. It didn't help much as he lost in the opening round. At OCIR's third All-Pro event, a 6.40 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, and slowed to a 12.67/38.52 loss to Bob Noice, who advanced with a 6.70/189. In March, John qualified #10 at the 32-car show at Bakersfield. In the first round, both he and Flip Schofield smoked the tires heavily, with Flip's 8.47 coming out on top. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. There he beat Steve Carbone in round one, before losing in the following round. He did not race at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, nor did he make it to OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Wiebe was at Tulsa for the AHRA Grand American in April. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, he advanced with a 6.36. In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.33 while beating Dan Rightsell. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinals. It wasn't until May before John started performing up to his previous standards. He won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley. His 6.30 qualified #3, and in round one, a 6.44 dropped Ronnie Martin. Don Cook failed to fire for his round two race against Wiebe, so John soloed with a 6.49. He had an excellent race against Garlits in the semifinal where John's 6.47/234.37 beat the "Old Man"s" 6.49/236. He then beat Dave Settles for the victory with another 6.30. On May 23, he showed up at Dragway 42 in Ohio for the AHRA Grand American. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.34. In the first round, he ran a 6.59/214.28 "bye run." In the semifinal, an off pace 7.10/204.54 lost to Chris Karamesines. At the AHRA Springnationals, held at Century 21 Raceway in Denver, Colorado, he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.79. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.84, and in round two, Karamesines fouled against him. In the semifinal, Wiebe picked up to a 6.42 but lost to a holeshot 6.49 by Dan Richins. John got a big win at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.30/227.84. In the first round, a 6.48 beat Jim Bucher's Chevy-powered car. A second-round 6.49 beat Carl Olson's 6.81, and in the semifinal, a 6.65/218.86 advanced when Randy Allison broke. In the final, he met Garlits and beat him with a 6.49/227.27 over Don's 6.56/225. This was Wiebe's first NHRA National Event victory. A week later (June 17), he was at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the third NHRA Division 4 race. A 6.61/209 in the opening round lost to Vic Brown's track record 6.46. Another win came on July 8 at Kansas City for the AHRA Grand American. He qualified #1 and set Low ET and Top Speed in the final while beating Chris Karamesines with a 6.39/222.77. Not long after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for a ten-car show. In the semifinals, John's 6.36/228.42 advanced when Brown broke. He faced Dick LaHaie in the final, and his 6.39/229 got the win over Dick's troubled 7.17/130. Englishtown was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Summernationals. Wiebe ran 6.29 to qualify #12, but in round one, his 6.41 lost to Settles' 6.32. The month of August started with John making a trip to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Almost 30 Top Fuel cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.42/230.77 qualified #4, and in round one, he ran 6.66 to eliminate Jack Revelle. Brown lost an engine against him in round two, and Wiebe advanced with a 6.71. He had a great race against Billy Campbell in the semifinals that saw John's engine destroying 6.34/229 beat Billy's 6.32/233. Even though he won their race, he was unable to race Garlits in the final. The following week (August 12), he was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. This time 40 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car show. In the opening round, his 6.42/221.67 beat a very sleepy Brown who lost with a much better 6.27/225. But in the second round, his Donovan came to the line ailing, and his off-pace 6.93/137.40 lost to Jim Bucher's Chevy that advanced at 6.35/220. John's best NHRA national event speed was 227.84 at Columbus. | Formerly listed a 5.975 ET, but John is not in the Cragar Five-Second Club, which wasn't filled until June 1974. He didn't run a five-second run in NHRA competition until Indy 1976. Does anyone have conflicting info? | Bret Kepner - 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Notes: Photo from 1975 NHRA Springnationals. Also 6.08 at Pomona Winters 2/74. Won infamous PRO Race at New York National in August 1974. Ran 6.38 at Gainesville, 6.38 at Columbus, 6.24 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Indy, and 6.06 at Ontario. Pictured car was actually John's second RE car. The 73 cars were built by Ed Mabry. | Wiebe was still Ed Donovan's 'test car.” Any new developments for the Donovan 417 were tried on John's car first. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Wiebe’s 6.08/230.17 qualified #8. There were actually four Donovan entries that outqualified him. In the opening round, Jim Bucher's Chevy broke on the line and a 7.03/197.36 advanced. In round two, John’s 6.27/226.70 lost to eventual winner Gary Beck's 5.90/223. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where his 6.38 qualified #11. He gave Don Garlits a driving lesson in the first round, where his 6.39/194.38 beat "Big Daddy's" quicker 6.28/232. But John was unable to run in round two as the engine was hurting and Jim Murphy soloed into the semifinals. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Grand Am Nationals. Wiebe qualified #3. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Garlits. He then went to Dragway 42 for another AHRA Grand American race. John beat Chris Karamesines in round one, and in the semifinals, Garlits fouled against him. He faced Paul Longenecker in the final and Paul's 6.36 gave John a runner-up finish. Early in June he was at Spokane for the AHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #4 and lasted until the semi's where Beck's 6.15/226 beat his 6.47/196.06. At Columbus, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.38. Wiebe's holeshot 6.62 in the first round, beat Ronnie Martin's quicker 6.59. In round two he faced fellow Donovan campaigner Herm Petersen. John’s 6.53 beat Herm's 6.58. Unfortunately, John came up against Beck in the semifinals, and Beck set Low ET with a 5.98/245 to stop Wiebe's early shut-off 6.55/194.38. He got a win over an eight-car field at Martin, Michigan. He stopped Bucher's Chevy in the final and had earlier set a 6.09 track record. He opened up the month of July with another win at Kansas City for the AHRA Drag Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.22/218.44 behind Garlits' 6.08/238. These two would work their way into the final. A first-round 6.24/222.22 beat Jerry Wilson and a semifinal 6.20 beat Karamesines. Garlits had run 6.12 and 6.17 to reach the final so he had the edge. But in the final, both slowed and John's 6.41 got him the victory over Garlits' 6.61. Wiebe had the quickest Donovan qualifier at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. His 6.30/204.54 got him the #6 spot. He improved to 6.25/216.86 in the first round, over Grant Stoms' 6.36/224. But an off-pace 6.45/225.56 in round two lost to Dave Settles' 6.17/238 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He did not race at the NHRA Division 5 Opener, but he was at the second Division 5 race held at Minnesota. Wiebe dominated the show. He led qualifying with a 6.35 (Low ET). He ran 6.43/217.39 and 6.44/205.01 to reach the final. A final round 6.44/229.59 (Top Speed) got the victory over Mark Williams' 6.97/208. He did not make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, choosing to stay closer to home and run the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis that was being run the same weekend (August 4). Things didn't go so well as he qualified last in the eight-car show and in the first round, the car refused to fire, giving opponent Bill Pryor an easy run into the semifinals. John then went to Wichita for the third Division 5 race. He won again, but this time it wasn't so easy. Marvin Graham qualified #1 and had worked his way into the final to meet with Wiebe. Marvin smoked the tires and John's 6.57/207.84 got the win. His next stop was at New York International for the PRO National Challenge race. The race was poorly managed, but that didn’t take away from John's victory there. He deserved it. There were 38 cars attempting to qualify for the 32-car field and Wiebe got the pole with a 6.12/206.32. He ran his first ever "five" in the first round, where a 5.96/217.38 beat Pryor's engine blowing 6.25/182. A second round 6.05/210.28 beat Stoms' 6.08/232 and in the third round, he got a solo and still legged it to a 6.06. John got yet another solo in round four, and his 6.48/219.50 advanced into the final. He was to run Bruce Walker, but Walker's car lost fire on the line and Wiebe soloed yet again for the win. Another final round showing came at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. John qualified #4 with a 6.58 and he made runs of 6.69/198.23, 6.38/208.81, and 6.29/225.00 over Frank Bradley's 6.44/223 in the semifinals. In the final he faced Canadian Terry Capp and the two had a great race, but Capp's 6.32/234 beat John's close 6.35/229.00.

Notes: The photo from the 1975 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | John started his '75 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Marvin Graham. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran a 6.07 to qualify #13. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a shut off 13.38 that lost to Dave Settles in the "Candies & Hughes" machine. Wiebe qualified #2 with a great 5.97/238.09 at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he lost early. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.26 and a first-round 6.32/196.07 beat Don Souter's 6.36/226. In the second round, his Donovan engine came to the line ailing and he could only muster a 9.82 that lost to Dale Funk's 6.20. John got a big win in May at Tulsa for the AHRA Southwest Grand American. It was an eight-car show and he won his first-round with a 6.60 over Ronnie Martin. A semifinal 6.49 beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car. In the final, he took the win by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.44/230.17 (speed was a track record) that beat Graham's close 6.49/209. John repeated that win at the next AHRA Grand American, the Grandnationals at Dragway 42. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.23/217.91. In the first round, he caught Jack Revelle napping and beat him with a 6.70 to Jack's 6.4 run. In the semifinal, Wiebe ran 6.37/228.42 to beat Bill Pryor's 6.39/215. He grabbed the victory with a solo 6.39/231.95 (Top Speed) when Wilch's Chevy broke on the line. Another victory came in early June when he won the NHRA Division 5 race at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD He qualified #5 with a 6.52 forcing him to run the low qualifier, Graham in the first round. John pulled a holeshot and hung on for a 6.75/222.76 win over Marvin's quicker 6.67/219. In the semifinal, he ran a 6.62/211.26 solo when Jack Harris broke. In the final, Bob Struksnes broke a clutch and John went on for the win with a 6.38/216.86. The next AHRA event was the Springnationals at St. Louis International. Wiebe ran 6.30/218.98 to qualify #3. He beat Walt Barbin in the first round, with a 6.19 (Low ET) at 222.78. In the semifinals, however, he smoked the tires and lost to Pryor. He won another NHRA Divisional race at Oklahoma City. John set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.19/234.98 that beat Graham's 6.27/231. In July, AHRA held another Grand American race. It was run at Green Valley. Most AHRA races featured eight-car shows at this time, but at this event, it was a sixteen-car field. John ran well, hitting a 6.20/230.17 while beating Wilch in round two, but in the semifinal, he met up with Graham and the two had a heck of a race. Marvin won the race with Green Valley's first "five," a 5.98/220.04, but while losing, Wiebe shot through the traps with a 6.02/240.00 (track record). On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.20/231.76. He faced low qualifier Richard Tharp in the first round, and beat him with a 6.41/231.36 when Tharp smoked the tires in the "Carroll Brothers" car. He shut off and lost with problems in round two against Gary Beck. Beck got him again at Bison Dragways in Manitoba for an NHRA Divisional race. This time, it was in the final and Gary's 6.09/218 beat Wiebe's 6.36/210.28. On August 3 John was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Drag Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.30/229.00, but he overstaged and fouled against Billy Graham in the semifinals. He hit a little snag later in August when his best of 6.27 failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at the PHR Championships. He was first alternate. At the "Biggie" of the year, the NHRA US Nationals at Indy, he lost to Rick Ramsey's 5.99/236 in the first round, with a 6.15/237.46. His early season success seemed to be drying up as at the next event, the AHRA World Finals at Spokane had him losing to Chris Karamesines in the first round. He got back into the show on the "break rule", but in the semifinal, his tire-smoking 7.01/136 lost to Marvin Graham's 6.20/217.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Ran 234.98 at OCIR WCS 76. Won AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Runner up at NHRA US Nationals. | John Wiebe started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8, and in the first round, his 6.74 beat Bob Williams. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 9.43 loss to Jim Plummer. He did not go to Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, his best of 6.05/232.55 failed to qualify. From the non-qualifying effort, he went to the top of the chart by qualifying #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.901/232.55. A first-round 6.19/218.97 beat Howard Haight's 6.28/233, and in round two, an easy 7.09/177.51 advanced when Gary Ritter blew his engine. He had a great race with Tom Kaiser in round three (32-car field), but his 6.13/229.59 lost to Tom's 6.10/234. His 5.90 did hold up for Low ET. The following week (March 14), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.17/235.60 qualified #12. He had one of four Donovan-powered cars to make the show. In the opening round, he smoked the tires and shut off against Bob Struksnes. He won the AHRA Show Me Nationals at Kansas City in April. He ran 6.17 and 6.13 over Billy Graham and Paul Longenecker to reach the final, where he faced Bill Pryor in another Donovan-powered car. John picked up to a 5.98/242.58 (Top Speed) to win over Pryor's 6.15/224. Shortly after that, he won the NHRA Division 5 Opener at Denver. He qualified #1 with a 6.53/215.83, and then he beat Tom Kaiser and Williams to reach the final. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.42/220.59 over Struksnes' 6.63/194. Early in May, he ran at the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR. He qualified #4 with a 5.96/234.98 and lasted until round two, where his 6.13/221 lost to Gary Cornwall's 6.10/232. Wiebe's next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. John's 6.27 qualified #1, and an opening-round 6.28 beat Billy Graham's 6.50. But in the semifinals, the car went into a wheelstand, and he shut it down to 7.52/135.73 while opponent Frank Holden advanced into the final with a 6.44/204. Early in June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/223.77. An opening round 6.12 (Low ET) at 234.99 beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car at 6.49/209. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 6.21/237.47 that beat Tom Kaiser's slightly quicker 6.18/235. He faced upstart Don Denner in the final, and another 6.12 at 232.56 got the victory over Don's 6.48/191. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John made seven qualifying attempts, but his best of 6.29 (third alternate) failed to make the show. He was at Thunder Valley for the third NHRA Division 5 race, but he lost early. On June 27, he was at Houston for the NHRA Division 4 race. He qualified #1 at 6.29 (Low ET) and a first-round 6.34/235 beat Doug Mead, but in the semifinals, he went up in smoke and shut off to an 8.24/115.87 loss to Marvin Graham's 6.57/215. His next win came at the AHRA Nationals held at Green Valley Raceway in July. He qualified #1 with a 5.89/245.00 (Low ET and Top Speed), got the "odd-lot" solo in round one, and ran 5.99 to advance. Frank Bradley fouled against him in the semifinals, and his 5.90 moved into the final. He faced Tom Dumbell, but there was no stopping Wiebe this day as he got the victory with a strong 5.91/242.58. After not qualifying at Columbus, John did really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.01/242.58 got him the #4 spot in the show. Unfortunately, both he and Gary Beck ran 6.14 (John at 234.37) in the first round, and Beck picked up the win light. He also made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.11/240.64, and in round one, he beat Tony Ceraolo with a 6.12/236.84. Another 6.12/229.00 in round two advanced him into the semifinals. But that was as far as he would get in eliminations as Richard Tharp's 5.97/240 sent Wiebe's 6.16/234.98 packing for home. On August 15, John was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.05 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. He also ran 6.05 in the first round, to beat Clayton Harris' 6.27. He cut the light close in round two, and his 6.10 beat Mike Palmer's quicker 6.08. He got an easy solo in the semifinals when Johnny Abbott lost fire on the line. He faced Don Garlits in the final, and the "Old Man" had been running strong 5.9's throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits' 5.91/241 bested Wiebe's 6.20/226.70 for the victory. Did John run 5.875 somewhere this year? Best NHRA ET of 5.939 at Indy (at his best speed of 245.23).

Notes: Qualified first at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson with a 6.17. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ron Attebury. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.988/243.24 qualified #5. He was upset in the first round, by Ron Correnti, 6.17 to a shut off 8.71. Shortly after this, John sold his dragster and equipment to Rick Ramsey and he retired from racing. Did John run a 5.95 at Orange County this year? Removing that until we get confirmation.
