Notes: Reid did not qualify at the Winternationals at Pomona (times not reported). On May 2, Whisnant was at Suffolk for the second NHRA Division 2 race. He beat Jim Little in the opening round with a 10.38, and in round two, his 10.36 stopped Gene Turnage. But in the semifinals, his 10.35 lost to Rick Holladay's 10.30. Reid was still running the Dart on May 23 at Blaney for the third NHRA Division 2 race. He beat C.T. Cromer in the first round, with a 10.52, but in round two, both he and Sam Carroll ran 10.57, but Carroll got the win light. Reid qualified #16 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals (qualified times not available). In round one, he defeated Craig Robillard, 10.44/132.15 to 10.76/129, but lost to Dick Humbert in round two, 10.30/134 to Reid's 10.410/132.35. That was Reid's last NHRA national event in the Dart. He showed up at Ontario with his new Plymouth Duster. |

Notes: Reid’s 9.50 was at NHRA national record set at Suffolk. Also ran 9.540/144.92 at Tulsa. Ran 9.584 and 9.586 at 144.69 for a new NHRA mph record at Phenix City, AL. | After two years of almost total dominance of Pro Stock racing, the Mopar Hemi was now faced with the new challenge of the small block Vega of Bill Jenkins. The Vega of Jenkins was a completely new type of Pro Stock car using a custom chassis whereas the other cars were still based on factory chassis. The Mopars were still a force to be reckoned with, but the clock was now running out for them. Reid’s Duster was a strong runner in '72. His season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #4 with a 9.70 and lasted until the second round before losing to the eventual winner Butch Leal. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in the 32-car field. He lasted until the third round where his late 9.82 lost to Don Grotheer's 9.93. Early in March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. A 9.62/143.76 qualified #2 behind Ronnie Sox's 9.56/144, but he broke a clutch against Joe Weis in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 9.59. A slightly better 9.58 in the opening round beat Dick Landy's 9.87 and in round two, he did what few people would do in '72: he beat the "Grump.” His 9.63/140.18 held off Jenkins' 9.77/141. The Vega had blown a head gasket on the run. After that, you would think that Reid would go on to win, but unfortunately, he broke against Melvin Yow in the semifinals. On April 9th, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Phenix City. Reid set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.63/144.00 (track speed record) on his way to a final round showing against Yow. At the second Division 2 race held at Suffolk in May, Reid failed to reach the final, but he did reset the NHRA Pro Stock record to 9.50. He also had Top Speed at 144.23. Reid was overdue for a win; it finally came on May 20 at the Division 2 race at Blaney Dragstrip. He also reset the NHRA Pro Stock speed record to 144.69. In the final, opponent Joe Fisher broke and Whisnant ran 9.57/144.23 for the victory. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He only qualified #11 and that set up a first-round race with Sox who qualified #3. Sox’s 9.71 beat Reid's 9.78 to send him home early. The following week (June 18), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There were 32 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Reid qualified #9. That was not good as he faced low qualifier Jenkins in round one. Reid tried hard in their race, maybe a little too hard, as he missed third gear and lost to Jenkins' 9.68/144. Another win came at the Warner Robins National Open on June 25. There, a final round 9.73/138.88 beat Bruce Walker's 9.85/138. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 9.70 qualified #9 in the 32-car field. He beat Dutch Irrgang in the opening round, but in round two, he came up against Jenkins again and his 9.72/140.84 lost to the Vega's 9.52/137. |

Notes: Reid debuted this trick Don Hardy-built Duster in 1973, and he was tough to beat this year. His cars ran well, and he always had one of the strongest Mopars. He started the season by winning the Warner Robins Grand Opener in January. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 9.45. Reid got a first-round single and then set Low ET in round two with a 9.42 over Lamar Walden. A 9.50 won the event over Buck Pike, who fouled in the final. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Another 9.45 qualified #6, and he lasted until round two, where Don Carlton's 9.25/132 beat Reid's 9.41/144.00. After that, it was off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 9.23 qualified #7 and an even better 9.21 beat Ronnie Lyles' 9.29 in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Ronnie Sox's 9.20/147 with a 9.33. In April, he won the Division 2 Opener at Phenix City, where a final round 9.39 beat Ben Hicks. Still, in April, he won another race at Warner Robins, this time beating Don Nicholson in the final. Reid got stuck in traffic on the way to Englishtown for the Summernationals. He arrived late and missed the tech inspection. Two weeks later (July 29), he was back in the winner's circle at Miami's NHRA Division 2 race. He qualified #1 with a 9.24, and in the opening round, his 9.23/148.02 (Top Speed) beat Steve Bagwell. He ran a track record 9.19 at 148.02 in round two to defeat Oscar Robert's 9.54/143. Reid got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and advanced with an easy 9.85/128.38. He beat a fouling William Paris in the final with a 9.26/147.54. Reid was at Blaney in October for the Dixie Nationals. He beat Stuart McDade in the final. Both had tied for Low ET at 9.14. His next stop was at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #7 with a 9.56, but an off-pace 9.95/141.95 lost to Royce Freeman's 9.84/136 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, his 9.18/148.51 beat Carl Ruth. But in round two, his 9.19/148.51 lost to Don Carlton's 9.14/149. Reid was going to run at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but they were postponed for a week, and he left to run the Turkey Trot National Open at Gainesville that was run on the same day. It turned out to be a wise choice, as he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 9.12/149.50. A 9.10/150.00 beat Oscar Roberts in round one, and a 9.04/151.00 stopped Roy Hill in the semifinals. He went up against Harold Clark in the final, and Clark fouled while Reid ran 9.02/151.00 (Low ET and Top Speed) for the victory. He picked up one last win before the season ended. He won the Snowbird National Open on December 2. Once again, he ran strong. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with an 8.99/151.77. A 9.04 beat William Paris in round one, while a 9.03 in the semifinal took out Kenny Hahn. He faced the Pinto of Hubert Platt in the final, and it was no contest as Reid's 9.07/151.51 easily dispatched Platt's 9.42/144. Reid's best NHRA National Event times were 9.160 at Sanair and 150.00 at Ontario. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/25/75. | Reid's Duster was still pretty stout in '75. At the IHRA Winternationals, things didn't go so well as he was the second alternate for the eight-car field. He was aided by a new NHRA weight break of 7.10 lbs. per cubic inch that went into effect at the Gatornationals in March. There, he qualified #14 with a 9.05 and was one of five Mopars that made the show. Only two survived round one and Reid was one of them when his quick-leaving 9.07 beat Bert Straus's 9.01. In round two, he came up against Wayne Gapp. Wayne had been deep into the eights (8.76 in qualifying, 8.88 round one), so Reid took a gamble on the tree and fouled. At the first NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins, Whisnant reached the final. He set Low ET in the first round, with an 8.93 and in the semifinals, his 8.97/151.77 beat Joe Varde. He faced low qualifier Wally Booth in the final. It was a good race, but the AMC's 9.05/149 got the victory over Reid's runner-up 9.06/152.28. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but a 9.12/151 in the first round, lost to Bob Glidden's 8.93/149. Whisnant went to Suffolk for the next NHRA Division 2 race, but he failed to reach the finals. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. At Englishtown, he had the quickest Mopar in the field for the NHRA Summernationals when he ran 9.04/150.75 for the #8 spot. Unfortunately, a 9.08/151.26 fell to Charlie Castaldo's 9.09/150 in the first round. He qualified #11 for the 32-car field at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 9.04. He improved to 9.02/150.75 in the first round, to beat Bob Ingles, but he lost to eventual winner Gapp in round two. Reid was back at Rockingham the following week (September 7) for the IHRA US Open race. An 8.96 qualified #4 and in the first round, his 9.00/153.06 beat Kenny Hahn's 9.12/150. He faced another Mopar in round two and again he won; this time his 9.02/151.51 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.12/150. He faced Lee Edwards' Camaro in the semifinals and despite running a good 9.01/151.25, he lost to Edwards' better 8.94/152. Whisnant made it to the semifinals at the final NHRA Division 2 race at Desoto when his car failed to fire. Reid did not make the long trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, but he was at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. A 9.05 qualified him #14 in the field, but he lost to Lee Hunter in the first round. While the regular NHRA season ended, it didn't keep Reid from racing. In November, he won the Southeast National Open at Warner Robins. He qualified #1 with an 8.96/151.77 and beat George Pitts in the final. Another win came at the Snowbird National Open at Desoto. There, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.99/152.54 before stopping Hahn's 9.15/148 in the final with a 9.00/149.25. Best NHRA national event times were 9.020 at Indy and 152.80 at the World Finals. |

Notes: The 7.62 at 176.47 was a questionable run but has never been disproved. Lee Shepherd came from behind to clinch his third straight Winston Pro Stock championship after points leader and No. 1 qualifier Frank Iaconio was upset by Reid Whisnant in round one. Whisnant clocked a stunning 7.620, the quickest run ever by a Pro Stocker in NHRA competition. - NHRA | Whisnant also ran a 7.71 early in the season but was mired in the 7.80s for most of 1983. | Reid Whisnant had the lone Mopar to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.88 qualified #8, and in the opening round, he beat Harry Scribner. In round two, his 7.95/177.16 beat Ronnie Manchester's 8.01/172, but a semifinal 8.05 lost to eventual winner Frank Iaconio's 7.83. It was a good showing for the Mopar, and he continued to run well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Reid qualified #2 with a 7.71/178.57 behind Lee Shepherd's 7.67/181. He beat Mark Yuill in round one before losing to Rickie Smith in round two, where both drivers ran 7.75. Whisnant then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7, but an 8.02 in the first round, lost to Mickey Stephens' 7.94. He was the only non-GM car to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Iaconio. The Camaro got out of shape, and Reid advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Joe Lepone. The Mopar driver continued to impress when he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. The Rock had 26 cars attempting to qualify, and his 7.80 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early. |

Notes: Reid entered the 1984 NHRA season with a lot to prove after his amazing 7.620 at the World Finals in 1983. He started inauspiciously with a 7.918/175.09 first alternate shot at the Winternationals. However, he did get into the show and lost to Warren Johnson in the first round, 7.884/178.21 to 7.886/176.12. Reid then brought out a brand new Don Hardy Daytona at Gainesville. He was first alternate DNQ at 7.844/176.81 but got into the show and – like the World Finals a few months earlier – ran an out-of-this-world 7.615/174.41 to defeat Ken Dondero’s 7.814/175.78 in round one. Amazingly, a two-tenths Dondero holeshot (.450 to .646) almost stole the race. The margin of victory was .003 seconds! This run only added to the mystery and suspicion about Whisnant’s combination, especially after Don Coonce defeated him in round two, 7.78/179 to a ‘normal’ 7.893/175.09 from Reid. Whisnant followed this with DNQ efforts in Atlanta (7.943/174.75) and Columbus (7.940/176.12). He qualified #15 at Sanair at 7.839/178.57 and lost in round one, to Frank Iaconio, 7.76/180 to 7.956/176.47. Reid was a third alternate DNQ at Englishtown at 7.854/175.78 and also DNQ’d at Indy at 7.881/176.47. He qualified #14 at the World Finals at 7.814/176.47. He got a legit win over Andy Mannarino in round one, 7.890/175.78 to 8.015/176.12, but lost to Butch Leal in round two, 7.765/178.92 to 7.867- 176.47. Reid was a hard-running campaigner who often qualified and ran well. But his ability to drop two tenths from his normal times in 1983/1984 will have pro stock fans forever questioning those low 7.6 second runs. |

Notes: Reid was one of the few Mopar Pro Stock campaigners in '85. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his best of 7.820/175.57 was good for the sixth alternate. He did not appear on the qualifying lists for the NHRA Gatornationals but entered the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.880/176.40 was the eighth alternate. Reid made a trip to Bandimere for Mile-High Nationals, but his 8.313/170.45 was a second alternate DNQ. He was the fifth alternate DNQ at Indy, with his best times of the year at 7.791/178.71. Reid finished the year at Pomona, where his 7.839/178.64 finished as the sixth alternate. Whisnant entered the 1986 season in a Chevy Camaro. |

Notes: Ran the new Beretta and the Camaro this year. The Camaro ran through at least Memphis, so Butch's best times of 7.380/187.30 at Gainesville were run in the Camaro. Listing Butch's best times at Maple Grove and Houston and assuming those are the Beretta. We need confirmation. |

Notes: Reid ran the new Beretta and the Camaro this year. The Camaro ran through at least Memphis, so Butch ran his best times of 7.380/187.30 at Gainesville in the Camaro. Reid qualified for every NHRA National event since the '87 Winternationals. But that streak stopped at Indy in '88 when his 7.50 failed to crack the 7.48 "bump" for the NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: Reid had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals at Pomona where he qualified #10. He lost to Larry Morgan's 7.36/187 in the first round, with a 7.39/186.87. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #7 and lasted until the second round where Darrell Alderman's 7.35/186 got him. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, Reid ran a 7.38/186.48 to qualify #5. He beat Butch Leal in the first round, but lost to Bob Glidden in round two. He got his best qualifying spot of the year at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. There, he qualified #3 with a 7.38/187.57. Unfortunately, he lost to Alderman in the first round. He failed to qualify at the next four events, the Cajun Nationals, the Springnationals, and in Canada at the Grandnationals where a best of 7.47/183.97 was first alternate. His Summernationals best of 7.45/185.64 was good for the #7 alternate. Reid raced the next day at Maryland International (Budds Creek) for the US Pro Stock Open. He qualified #6 with a 7.55/183.22 and in the first round, he beat Joe Clark's 7.61/180 with a 7.52/182.85. In the second round, he ran a 7.53/183.03, but lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.55/184. He qualified #16 with a 7.41 at the California Nationals, but a first-round 7.42/185.45 lost to Morgan's 7.38/187. The next race was in Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Reid ran a 7.39/186.02 to qualify #12. Once again, he lost to Morgan in the first round, with Larry's 7.40/186 beating his 7.42/185.91. He tied his best qualifying start at the Northstar Nationals where he used a 7.46/183.89 to qualify #3. He lost to Leal in the first round. Whisnant tried to qualify at Indy for the US Nationals, but his best of 7.42/185.14 came up a bit short (#3 alternate). The next race on the schedule was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove where Reid qualified #12 with a 7.39/185.68. In the first round, both he and Bruce Allen ran 7.37's with Allen getting the win. Reid got his best ET of the year at Ennis Fall with a 7.316 and recorded his best speed at the Mid-South Nationals in Memphis at 187.57. |

Notes: Reid attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but his best of 7.42/186.72 was good for the second alternate. He was the fourth alternate at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 7.42/185.33. At Houston for the Supernationals, a best of 7.36/186.37 was the tenth alternate for the show. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March and Reid's 7.45/185.16 qualified #5. In the first round, his 7.45/185 beat Buddy Ingersoll's close 7.46/184. In the semifinals, his 7.46/185.37 lost to eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.39/187. Shortly after that, Whisnant was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It took a 7.39 to qualify and his 7.43/185.60 best left him as the tenth alternate. Early in April, he was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A strong 7.32/186.68 qualified #8, but in the first round, both he and Johnson ran 7.32 (Whisnant at 186.76), but WJ reached the finish line first. He qualified for the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, running a 7.316/187.03 for the #11 spot. An opening round 7.49/183.44 lost to Kenny Delco's 7.39/186. The Atlanta times were Reid’s best for 1990 on the NHRA national event trail. Interestingly, Reid's best ET was exactly his best from the previous season - a 7.316 run at Ennis. |
