Notes: In 1961, they jumped out of the flathead gas class into the gas dragster ranks. They were holders of the national 1320 record in C Flathead Gas Dragster which they set at Lions on Mar. 10, 1961 at 10.79 at 123.96 mph. They competed against perennial winner Al Freeman at Lions in the D/D class and once they got things sorted out, began winning with regularity. At Lions on Nov. 18, they won D/D class with 9.81 at 142.40 mph. On Nov. 26 at San Gabriel, they took a D/D class win with 10.14 at 136.82 mph. At Lions on Dec. 10, they took a D/D class win with 9.88 at 142.85 mph. On Dec. 16 at Lions, they won the D/D class again with 9.83 at 141.95 mph. The engine was a fairly mild 426 Hemi. It was balanced and used a lot of factory stock parts. The heads were polished, and the ports matched to the Weiand intake manifold. Stock rods held 7.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons, and the team was a firm believer in Isky cams. A Gilmore blower drive spun the GMC 6/71 blower 18% over, and a Hilborn injector sat up top. Don won the NASCAR Nationals at West Salem by beating Don Prudhomme in the final with a 7.70. Earlier, Westerdale had set lot ET and Top Speed at 7.55/207. He qualified at 7.509/210.76 at Indy, the quickest, fastest times of the Nationals. Went to the second round of NHRA Bristol 65 with 7.51 Low ET of the Meet. Don ran 7.47 at York, PA.

Notes: Don qualified #30 with a 7.86 at the NHRA Winternationals, but lost to Jim Dunn in the first round. May 1 saw Don facing off against the "Greek" Chris Karamesines at Island Dragway for a best of three match race. Don won two straight with times of 8.0/199.55 and 7.99/196.15. On May 7, Westerdale faced Connie Kalitta's SOHC Ford powered fueler in a best of three match at Capitol. Kalitta won the first race with a 7.35/221 over the "Ramchargers" 7.80/200.44. Don came back to win the second race with a 7.80/206.88 when Conrad fouled away a 7.61/211. In the final deciding race, Westerdale fouled, running 7.94/203.16 and losing the match to Kalitta's 7.49/215. He then went up against Don Garlits at Connecticut for another best of three match. Unfortunately, he lost two straight to "Big Daddy" and to add insult to losing, he blew his engine in the second race. His next match was a rematch against the "Greek" on May 14 at Detroit. Don won the first race, but in the second, his 'chute fell out and Karamesines grabbed the win. In the deciding race, Westerdale's 7.95/202.70 lost to Chris' 7.70/201. As May ended, the "Ramchargers" faced "Big Daddy" again at Oswego on the 29th. Garlits again beat them two straight.
