Notes: This AWB Chevy was almost entirely raced as a fuel-burning match basher. (This pit picture shows wonderfully the progress made by funny cars in some 18 months. The steel-bodied, glass-hood-enhanced, stock-framed Chevelle and "Dyno" Don Nicholson's flip-top, tube-framed Eliminator II Comet that instantly changed the match race playing field.) - RT |

Notes: Though running as a gasser was certainly not this car's usual element, having it classified here as both C/GS and A/GS seems to call for some written collaboration. Perhaps it had weight aded to run in the lower class? - RT |

Notes: Real Chevrolet Chevelle. He took on Ford superstar Hubert Platt at Southeastern International. The Chevelle failed to fire in the first race, so Platt ran a solo 10.61 to win. The second race saw the Mustang go into a huge wheelstand while Woods ran 10.17 to win. In the final race, Bobby reset his own track record from 9.62 to 9.58 while winning the match. Woods was really impressive at Biloxi, where he beat Ronnie Sox in a best-of-three-match race. Sox got out first in their first race, and his 10.14 held on to win. In their second race, Sox again got the jump, but ever so slowly, the Chevelle drove past for the win at 9.41/142.40. Bobby got out of shape but never lifted in the final race, catching Sox and winning with a 10.03. This was unusual for the time as the Chevies were underdogs compared to the factory-backed efforts from both Mopar and Ford. Bobby ran a best two out of three match race against Darrell Droke on May 7 at Birmingham, Alabama. The heavy winds caused the track officials to shorten the track to 1,000 feet. Wood won the match with a 9.15 best. The two had a rematch on May 14 at Biloxi the following week. Darrell came out on top when Wood was plagued with ignition problems this time. He managed to win one of the three races when Droke fouled in the second race. Woods faced Larry Reyes, driving the "Kingfish" Barracuda at Old Dominion Speedway early in July. Woods won their first race with a 6.22, but he lost the two remaining races and the match. |

Notes: In mid-April, Bobby was at Lassiter, Alabama, for a best-of-three-match race against Hubert Platt, who was driving Larry Coleman's Mustang. In their first race, the Chevelle went into a huge wheelstand that ended up bending an axle and putting the car out of competition. Woods was at Bristol on June 11 for the NHRA Springnationals. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.59/174.09 beat Mel Perry's 9.18/150. But he slowed to 9.39/103 in round two, and that wasn't enough to beat Maynard Rupp's 8.30/169 Cougar. Bobby qualified #5 at 8.465/171.10. Real Chevelle. |

Notes: Bobby won the AHRA Southern Nationals at Memphis on May 31, running a 7.74/191.31 in the final. On June 28, at Miami-Hollywood, he met Paula Murphy for a best two out of three match race. In the first race, he set a 7.65 track record at 194.38 over Paula, who fouled on an 8.17/189 pass. Wood won all three races with second and third runs of 7.78/191.88 and 7.73/190.66. On July 6, he was runner-up to Arnie Behling when they both ran 7.72 in the final of US 30's Grand Prix of Drag Racing. Bobby's speed was 204. The following day, they ran again at US 30, and this time Wood won with a 7.58/207 (Top Speed) after earlier setting Low ET at 7.49. On July 11, he faced a tough match race against Leonard Hughes at Memphis. The first race went to Wood's 7.59/191 when Hughes got out of shape. He won the second race as well with a 7.61/191.92, beating Hughes' 7.65/202. In the third race, Leonard's 7.71/195 beat Wood's 7.78, but his two wins had already won Bobby the match. On August 3 at Shelby Raceway, he set a new NHRA record at 7.58 while beating Ed Schartman three straight. His times were 7.58/194, 7.54/191, and 7.58/190. Ed's best was a 7.97/181. Still, on the match race trail, he met Sid Foster on August 9 at Palmetto and won three straight with a 7.56/198, winning the first race when Foster fouled on a 7.72/194 pass. Foster's Torino broke and couldn't make the final two races, so Wood ran a 7.54/180 while breaking a blower drive and a track record 7.39 at 201. On September 7, he went back to Shelby Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500. He ran a first-round 7.62 when Frank Oglesby's Cougar broke. A 7.50 beat Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm Charger in the second round. In the final, his 7.45 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.50. He qualified eighth at the NHRA Nationals at Indy with a 7.45/199.89. In the first round, Kelly Chadwick's 7.38/196 beat his 7.55/199.11. At the 900 foot track at Southeastern Dragstrip, they held an eight-car show on September 28. Bobby ran a first-round 6.20 over Scottie Sharp. In the semifinal, a 6.53 beat Paul Aray's Cuda. But a final round 6.15 by Curtis Wasson gave Wood the runner-up spot. Atlanta held its big $20,000 meet on October 12, and Bobby won it all when a final round 7.79/207.38 beat a fouling Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. On October 19, he was at Courtland for a best of three match against Schartman's Cougar driven by Arnie Behling. Wood won all three races with 7.62, 7.64, and 7.66 times. He ran a match race at Dallas on October 26 against Don Garlits' dragster. There was no handicap as the cars ran heads-up. Although Wood got out first on every run, he still lost all three races. As the season ended, he took another win at the Turkey Trot Nationals at Gainesville on November 30. He set Low ET in the final when his 7.30/193.76 beat Joe Petruccelli. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed 7.155/215 in this car, which is highly suspect for this year. Removing those times until further confirmation comes in. | Kendall GT-1 "Rebel." Held NHRA record with this car. - Danny White | Confirmed 7.45 at Memphis. |

Notes: He held the NHRA record with this car. Super Stock September '70 claimed 7.19 at near 210. Listing the 7.19, but not the 210, because it was not specific. | On January 4, Bobby qualified #2 with an 8.51 at the Drag News Championships in Orlando, Florida. The track was not known for good traction. He ran an 8.69/174.75 to get past the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Shirl Greer in the second round when he shut off with problems on the line. At the NHRA Gatornationals on February 15, he ran a 7.314/200.89 to qualify #6, but he lost to Bobby Rowe's holeshot in round one, 7.417/200.89 to 7.377/199.55. He then ran in a four-car race at the Southeastern Dragway's opener. Unfortunately, he blew an engine in his first race against Arnie Beswick. On March 15, LaPlace held a Funny Car vs. Top Fuel event. Bobby won his first race against Cliff Smith with a 7.71/153.84 when Cliff shut down to a 9.08. In the second race, Bobby shut off to an 8.10 that lost to Dave Chenevert's 6.89/207. In the third race, Wood ran Leonard Hughes' FC. Hughes ran a 7.36/205 that beat the Nova's 7.67/181.45. Wood won over an eight-car show at Aquasco on April 5. Times were off, as Jim Liberman's 7.55 was Low ET, but Bobby ran 7.68/193.54 in the semifinal over Tom Grove's 7.91/183. In the final, a 7.65/185.56 beat Johnny Wright's fouling 7.96/194 in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. With a little bit of luck on his side, he won at Atco on June 7 for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. A first-round 7.50/177.16 advanced over the broken Mickey Thompson Mustang, and he got another easy win with an 8.81/98.90 when Dick Bourgeois broke. He faced Low ET setter (7.27) Fred Goeske in the final. Goeske lost fire on the line, giving Wood a 7.55/182.55 solo for the win. At the next Cavalcade race in June at Island Dragways, he won his first race with a 7.60/193.13 but failed to make the final. On June 28, the Coca-Cola fleet raced again at Suffolk. Wood lost both of his races, one to Cliff Zink, driving the Stone, Woods & Cooke Mustang, and the other to the eventual winner, Kelly Chadwick. He failed to make it into the final at the next Cavalcade race at Blaney on July 5. At the next Cavalcade race at Salem, Ohio, Bobby set Top Speed while losing to Chadwick in his first-round race. He ran an 8.16/194 that lost to Kelly's 7.80/186.92. Wood ran very well at the Englishtown Coca-Cola event. A first-round 7.43/196.93 (Top Speed) beat Johnny Wright's ailing 11.79 in the M/T car. Jess Tyree lost fire on the line in the second round, and Bobby legged it through to a 7.45/192.71. In the third race, Bourgeois got out of shape and had to lift, giving Bobby a 7.43/194.80 win. Bobby won a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Cecil County in July. He ran 7.69/172.72 in the final over a fouling Kelly Chadwick. On July 26, he was at Aquasco for its Cavalcade race. He failed to get to the finals there. With all the Coca-Cola Cavalcade races, he didn't run many other meets or match races. In August, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.44/200 at the Cavalcade race at Niagara International but lost to Goeske early in the race. We need to confirm a 5.97 at Dallas, GA, this year. |

Notes: Just before September, Wood replaced his 427 Chevy with a 426 Hemi. He ran at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals and, in the first round, ran a career-best (to this point) of 7.077/206.42 in beating Gene Snow. Ironically, he lost in round two to the only Chevy-powered car to qualify in FC, Bruce Larson. Bruce ran a career-best 7.161/205.94 to beat Wood's 7.220/199.55. On September 20, a match race was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track against Tommy Grove's Cammer-powered Ford Mustang. Wood won the first race with a 5.93, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.78. He took a win on October 18 at the Atlanta $10,000 meet. He actually lost in the semifinals of the eight-car show when Tommy Smith beat him in his new Duster. Unfortunately for Tommy, his parachute failed and the car crashed off the end of the strip so Wood was reinstated to run against Huston Platt's Camaro for the money. A final round 7.34/204.08 won the event for Bobby. |

Notes: Wood debuted his new Vega late in the summer of '71. - RT | Ran 6.87 at Warner Robins. As of an 8/14/71 Drag News article, Wood's best numbers to that date had been 6.80s-216. - Dennis Doubleday | Woods was at U.S.30, Gary in Indiana, on September 10 for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. Twenty cars ran the first round, with the two cars with the lowest ET advancing into the final. Woods did not make the final run-off, but he did run 7.09 to beat Tom Hoover's 7.18. Shortly after that (September 26), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He fouled against Charlie Therwhanger in the opening round. The following week (October 3), he was at Lakeland for the IHRA World Finals. The hoped-for sixteen-car field was short, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Bobby's 7.66 got him the #8 spot in the show. A 7.28/190.67 in round one fell to Don Schumacher's 7.11/203. |
