Notes: Williams was driving this car on March 15 at the Dallas season opener. He raced against Mike Burkhart three times and lost all three races running a best of 7.89 in the first race. His other two runs were 8.25 and 7.95. Bernie qualified #10 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals on June 14 at 7.42/201. He fouled in the first round, against eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" Challenger but ran a consistent 7.442/197.36. That was the team's only NHRA national event.

Notes: Williams was a good friend of Dale Armstrong, and Dale helped Billy get his car set up for the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He was relatively unknown, but when he qualified #2 with a 6.76/202.70, a lot of people took notice. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 6.99 loss in the first round to Jim Archer, whose A/FD won with a 6.94. Ran 6.79/199.55 at Seattle International Raceway PDA. Billy qualified #10 at Indy with a 6.81/201.34, and he beat Ron Bonafanti in round one, 6.84/202.24 tp broke. Billy redlighted against eventual winner Dave Settles in round two. Notes: Billy Williams started the '78 season on the right foot by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #1 with a 6.87/200.44 (Low ET and Top Speed) and then ran 6.95/200 and 6.97/199 to reach the final against Brian Raymer. Williams won easily with a 6.92/200 over Raymer's 7.26/180. He almost doubled it up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.65 (Low ET) at 209. In the first round, Dale Armstrong fouled against him. Another 6.65 advanced in round two, and a 6.88 in the semifinals beat Ken Veney's 6.97. Williams faced Tom ridings’ Arrow BB/FC in the final, and the two had a great race, but Billy's 6.89/205.01 finished second to Ridings' 6.88/205. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Bogie Kell. Kell also stopped him in the final at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Williams qualified #1 with a 6.85/203 and, in the opening round, set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.70/207.85 over Fred Bach, who broke. A semifinal 6.73/206 advanced when opponent John Samolyk crashed. In the final, Billy ran his slowest pass, a 7.07/205.01, while Bogie got the victory with a 6.79/201.

Notes: Billy made a nice splash in top fuel this year. The team qualified on the bump at the Cajuns at their first event, 5.957/247.93. They could not make the first-round, and Gene Snow replaced them in the field. Billy was the first alternate at Columbus at 6.004/234.98. But it all came together at Indy. Williams qualified #8 at 5.701/247.25. He dropped a 5.693/254.23 on Scott Kalitta's 6.16/195 in round one, on race day. He had a bye run in round two. In the semis, Shirley Muldowney stayed in the 5.60s at 5.65/240, while Billy slipped to a 6.065/176.12 for the loss. Still, one round away from the Indy final was pretty choice. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify at Fremont, ended up as the third alternate at 5.790/243.24. Notes: Williams had trouble in qualifying at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In two qualifying passes the rear wing broke and had to be repaired. He finally got in a good pass and ran 6.57/210.37 to qualify #13. In the opening round, he and Stephen Fedele had a close race that saw Fedele's 6.54/213 beat Williams' 6.56/209.59. His next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta in April. It was an eight-car field and his 6.54/208.04 qualified #5. He faced low qualifier, Lee Young in the first round, and Billy's 6.57/208.33 advanced over Lee's off-pace 6.92/194. In the semifinals, a 6.66/200.62 beat Al Dapozzo's 6.85/169. This put him into the final where he faced Don Woosley. Williams tried hard, but his 6.68/206.51 finished runner-up to Woosley's 6.50/207. On May 19, he was at Central Michigan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race. It was another eight-car show and his 6.61/207.37 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he was unable to run eliminations, and he was replaced in the show by alternate, George ETterman. The following week (May 26). He was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.49/214.48. A first-round 6.52/210.77 beat Bubba Sewell's 6.64/205 and a semifinal 6.54/212.36 advanced when Jay Meyer fouled. Once again he faced Woosley in a final and once again he lost. This time he got anxious and fouled shutting off to 9.28/83.47 in another runner-up finish. His next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He qualified #9 with a 6.57/212.76 setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Bill Walsh. It was eventual winner Walsh's day as his 6.46/213 trailered Williams' 6.68/211.46. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Quaker City Dragway, Billy qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.92/202.24. He was off his normal pace at this race and in round one, his 7.00/196.07 lost to Woosley's 6.80/200. The car was running much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There his 6.49/213.98 qualified #3, and he ran 6.59/209.59 over Don DeVault and a 6.66/208.04 odd-lot solo to reach the semifinals, where he fouled away a 6.70 against Dennis Forcelle's 6.72. | At the NHRA Budweiser Summernationals in July at Englishtown, Williams qualified #3 with a 6.424/213.57. In round 1 he would face #11 qualifier Bill Mullins. Williams would run 6.755/209.20 in a losing effort to Mullins's 6.643/203.80.

Notes: Billy moved to Parma, Ohio, in 1992, and set up a shop on Denison Rd. Williams qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/227.61. An opening round 6.15/225.39 beat Tom Bristow's 6.16/224, but in round two his 6.18/223.49 lost to Lou Gasparelli's 6.09/231. He went to Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals, but he failed to qualify with a 6.29/222.49 (fourth alternate) best.
