Notes: Ran a disputed 8.99 in March 1954. Before that run, it was assumed that a piston-powered car would never run under 9.06 seconds, a theoretical limit imposed by engineers because it was supposedly impossible to accelerate faster than 1g. Some say the time could have been legit - as Art Chrisman had gone as quick as 9.40 a full year before, but it was discounted as bogus. The fact that it was not bettered for three years added weight to the doubters' argument. NHRA did experiments at Pomona in October 1956 that proved that dragsters did indeed accelerate at more than 1g. We are keeping the 8.99 in the notes instead of in the ET field, not because of the 1g limit, but because the accompanying speed of 144.85 was not fast enough to support an ET quicker than 9.85, even at the most efficient. - Draglist.com; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: In mid-April, Don and Ray Yates and Verne Mikkelsen sold their successful blown Merc flathead dragster to Jen Engineering. In August, Don joined with Vic Smaldino to drive his blown '46 four-barrel Riley-engined dragster. On Aug. 7 at San Fernando, they won the Four-Barrel class with a best speed of 115.38 mph. At San Fernando on Sep. 25, they turned 124 mph. Photo: "Smaldino & Yates 'Fargo' Dragster," in Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed website - MB |

Notes: Jim was at Maryland International on August 23 for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car show with a 7.42/186.14. A 7.79/177.23 beat Vernon Freeman in the first round, and a 7.41 beat Ed Burnley in round two. But in the semifinals he was late on the tree and his 7.55/184.04 lost to eventual winner Charlie Garrett's 7.59/181. Yates attempted to qualify at Darlington for the US Open Championships in September. Unfortunately, his best of 7.55/183.24 was good for the fifth alternate for the show. He went to IHRA's season-ending Fallnationals at Bristol and qualified #13 with a 7.51/184. In round one, his 7.54/183 beat James Antonette's 7.66/184, but in the second round, Rickie Smith pulled a holeshot and his 7.56 beat Jim's slightly quicker 7.55. |

Notes: Jim had been running Fords in Pro Stock for several years, but early in '90, he could only run 183 in his NHRA combination. He decided to pull the plug, and he bought Butch Leal's Willie Rells built Firebird. He did not race at NHRA's first two events of the season, but he was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals; he failed to qualify as his 7.346/186.33 was only the fifth alternate, but his choice turned up to be wise as his first time out with the Firebird saw him run almost a tenth and a half quicker than his best had been with his Fords. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 7.37/186.25 to qualify #10. An opening round 7.38/185.68 lot to eventual winner Kenny Delco's 7.28/188. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #14 with a 7.36/185.37. His 7.78/178.04 advanced when Bob Glidden fouled away a 7.26/189 against him in the first round. In round two, his 7.49/186.95 lost another converter from the blue oval, Rickie Smith's 7.34/187. He continued to run well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 7.32/187.30 qualified #13. A first-round 7.43/185.10 lost to Joe Lepone's 7.39/187. Jim's best times were from NHRA Atlanta and Sonoma, respectively, although he also went 7.329 at Ennis. |

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at Memphis with a 7.42/187.22 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. He did much better at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He got his best ever spot in an NHRA National event when his 7.33/187.46 qualified #4. A first-round 7.35/186.95 beat Jerry Haas' 7.40/186. He had a close second-round race with Gordie Rivera, where his 7.38/186.68 beat Rivera's 7.39/186. In the semifinals, he faced Warren Johnson, and although his 7.37/187.30 was good, WJ's 7.34/187 was better. Yates followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran a career-best 7.24 at 189.91 to qualify #2. He beat Joe Folgore in round one, with a 7.36/188.63, but a round two 7.34/188.08 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.23/191. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #10 with a 7.29/189.99. An opening round 7.40/186.10 beat Larry Morgan, but his 7.36/187.14 lost to eventual winner Darrell Alderman's 7.31/186 in round two. Denver was the next stop for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Yates installed a Liberty Clutchless 5-speed transmission in the car and ran it for the first time in competition. Jim qualified #7 with a 7.75/177.83, and he had a close first-round race with Butch Leal that saw his 7.81/176.36 beat Leal's 7.83/175. But Alderman got him again in round two, where the Dodge's 7.73/176 beat his 7.80/177.09. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals at Sonoma. A 7.29/191.44 qualified #10, improving to 7.26/188.91 to defeat Scott Geoffrion's 7.28/191 in the opening round. In round two, heavy tire shake forced him to shut down to a 7.66.182.18 loss to Alderman's 7.28/191. A couple of days after that (July 31), he was at Woodburn for its Pro Stock Invitational. Ten cars were there to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In Yates's first race, his 7.39/186 beat Rickie Smith's 7.47/187. The second race saw him improve to 7.33/188 to beat Joe Lepone Jr, but his times were not good enough to advance into the final. Rick Howard photo from 1991 NHRA Springnats, Columbus, Ohio. |

Notes: Photo from 1992 Gators. Jim started the season with a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 7.24/191.57. In round his 7.27/190.51 stopped Harry Scribner and a 7.36/188.36 in the second round beat Mark Pawuk. He had a close race against Bob Glidden in the semifinals, but his 7.28/190.83 beat the Ford driver's 7.29/190. He faced Jerry Eckman in a all-Firebird final, but his 7.26/190.27 finished second best to Eckman's 7.19/192. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 7.27/190.07 qualified #6. Once again he ran well, beating Rickie Smith with a 7.29/188.60 and in round two, Yates' 7.43/186.52 advanced when Scott Geoffrion crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, an off-pace 7.39/187.53 lost to Don Beverley's 7.33/190. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Slick 50 Nationals. There Jim qualified #8 with a 7.20/190.83. Another strong 7.21/190.39 advanced when Beverley fouled. In the second round his 7.24/189.19 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.21/190. Yates year took a turn for the worse at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. During qualifying the car failed fuel check. His gas was checked and registered +2.3 on the meter. Only a reading of 0 and lower were acceptable. He was suspended for the next four races. Yates appealed and was back in competition at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 7.33/188.75 was good for the second alternate. This went better at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. His 7.28/189.75 qualified #6 and in the first round, he beat Gordie Rivera with a 7.29/189.63. An off-pace 7.45/187.38 lost to eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.32/190 in round two. At the NHRA Springnationals, Jim continued to qualify in the top half of the field with a 7.30/189.03 (#7). Another 7.30/188.56 in the first round, beat Allen's quicker 7.28/188. In the second round, he had problems and shut off to 7.94/151.26 in a loss to Geoffrion's 7.31/188. |

Notes: Photo from 1992 Gators. Confirmed 7.131 at Houston 93 and 192.67 at Gainesville 3/93. Where is the 7.129 at 193.22 from? | Jim was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 7.23/190.83 qualified #11. He picked up to 7.21/190.31 in the first round, but lost to a quick-leaving Mark Pawuk who won with a 7.22/191. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.27/189.19. Jim's off pace 7.35/179.17 lost to Larry Morgan's 7.23/190. He then went to Houston where his 7.13/192.14 qualified #7 for the Slick 50 Nationals. In the first round his 7.24/189.91 beat Scott Geoffrion, but in round two Yates' 7.21/191.53 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.16/192. Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Gatornationals. There Jim ran 7.15/192.67 to qualify #10. He lost a close round one race to David Rampy when Yates' 7.25/189.87 lost to Rampy's 7.24/190. He was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 7.17/192.30 qualified #11. In the first round, he pulled a holeshot on Bruce Allen and his 7.19/193.05 won over Allen's 7.18/193. In round two, both he and Rickie Smith ran 7.20 (Yates at 192.38) and Jim got the win light. In the semifinals, he fell off to 7.22/191.93 in a loss to Glidden's 7.17/193. Yates debuted a new Firebird at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but it needed more track time as his best of 7.27/189.19 failed to qualify and was good for the sixth alternate. The car was able to make the field at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. Jim's 7.26/189.75 got him the #15 spot. Unfortunately, a 7.36/189.43 in the first round, lost to Warren Johnson's 7.21/192. The following week (May 23), 31 cars attempted to qualify for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Once again, Yates qualified #15 this time with a 7.18/192.02. In round one he made an out of shape 7.39/189.67 pass that lost to Kurt Johnson's 7.26/191. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals where he was the seventh alternate with a best of 7.31/188.67. Things didn't go any better at the NHRA Western Nationals where he was the ninth alternate with a 7.40/186.72 best. Early in July, he stopped off at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He showed up running his 500 cubic inch NHRA combination. He failed to qualify and was the first alternate for the sixteen-car field with a 7.39/186.33. It was still pretty impressive against the 800 cubic inch cars. He was also the first alternate at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 7.71/177.86. Jim got back into the show in a big way at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals where he qualified #4 with a 7.21/191.36. But in the first round, he fouled away a 7.27/189.95 against Morgan. Jim went to Woodburn for the Pro Stock Invitational. There were eighteen cars there, and they each ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Yates did not run quick enough to reach the final. Seattle International was the next stop for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Poor Yates, he was the first alternate again with a 7.23/189.91 best. It was better than at Brainerd where he was the second alternate for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.32/188.83 best. Things were looking a little shaky going into the US Nationals at Indianapolis. Jim was more than a little worried about qualifying. But he did good, running 7.23/191.24 (#7) to get into the top half of the field. He beat Vince Khoury in the first round, with a 7.25/189.99, but a consistent 7.24/189.99 in round two lost to Geoffrion's 7.18/191. |
