Notes: Owen was a real character. In the 1960s and 1970s, he had a cam grinding business in south central Los Angeles--Owen's Orbit Cams. He was popular because he would grind a cam at a very reasonable price (like about $35). He liked to open at dark and close at dawn. He lived over his shop with his mother. Old timers recalled certain memories about going to his shop. "I made many a trip down to see Owen, had to wade through the dog droppings and the smell." Another remembered, "I can still see him in his blue coveralls with a Crook brand cigar in his mouth and several in his chest pocket." But in the '50s, Owen was a drag racer. Drag News (5/13/55) ran a 2-page feature on his speedy street roadster. It reported that he was secretary of the San Gabriel Road Rebels car club. Bowling discarded the conventional leaf spring suspension in favor of a pair of torsion bars at the rear and coils at the front. His '52 Chrysler engine was fitted with a log type manifold built by Bowling, fitted with four Stromberg carbs. Inside the engine was a Weber cam. It took him two years to build the car. He took a class win in A/SR at Pomona on Apr. 10 with 106.13 mph. That was good for a new strip record. He upped his class record at Pomona on Apr. 24 to 110.52 mph. Drag News (4/29/55) called it "one of the most creditable performances of the day." At the NHRA Regionals at Colton on May 15, he set a national record and won his class with 112.00 mph. Running at Colton on May 29, he took an A/SR class trophy with 108.48 mph. He liked to run at Colton. It was his kind of place. Either that, or the competition may not have been as stiff as it was at Pomona. Denny Carrisosa, Santa Fe Service, and Hess & Winslow were tough to beat at Pomona. On June 5 at Colton, he won his class with 107.24 mph. Back at Pomona on June 12, he set a new strip record and won his class with 111.00 mph. He took another win at Colton on June 19 with 112.50 mph. He won the A/R O.H. class at Santa Ana on June 26 with 109.89 mph. He towed his roadster to Paradise Mesa for the 2-day Pacific Southwest Championships. He set a record and won his class with 111.24 mph. He took a class win with 109.57 mph at Pomona on July 24. On Saturday night, July 30, at Colton, he took a class win with 106.10 mph. He won at Colton on Aug. 13 (108 mph) and at Pomona the next day on Aug. 14 (113.32 mph). At Colton on Aug. 27, he took a trophy win in A/SR with 109.00 mph. In September, he towed his roadster back to Great Bend, Kansas, for the first NHRA U.S. Nationals. He won the A/SR class with 88.75 mph and set an official national record with 111.11 mph. On Oct. 16, he set a new strip record at Colton with 113.20 mph. At Lions on Oct. 30, he won the A/SR class with 112.50 mph. He won his class at Colton on Nov. 6 with 112.52 mph. He towed the roadster to Phoenix for the completion of the rained-out Nationals in November and won his class (118.11 mph) and set a new national record with 115.26 mph. Notes: Bowling had great hopes for his new dragster when he and his mother set out from California to enter the car in the U.S. Nationals in Kansas City. But misfortune struck when a wheel came off his tow trailer. When they finally got the trailer repaired, he knew he couldn't make it to Kansas City by the deadline to be in the competition. He drove ahead anyway because he wanted to see the racing. The officials wouldn't let him compete but did say that he could make an unofficial test run to try out his car. After the Nationals, he returned to California and began entering his dragster every week at the San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip. Notes: On Aug. 17 at San Gabriel Drag Strip, he was runner-up to Bill Butters in Groh's Texaco A/D in top eliminator. In the first round of eliminations he clocked 11.81 at 119.84 mph. He was one of 26 A Dragsters who were at the U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma City, but success eluded him. On Nov. 30, he took gas top eliminator at Colton with 11.64 at 133.33 mph. On Dec. 21 at San Gabriel, he took top time, low ET, and top eliminator wins. He grabbed the top eliminator trophy with 10.78 at 132.35 mph. His low ET was 10.63 and best speed was 133.33 mph. Notes: This was the car that ended Gas Ronda's career at Beeline in 1970. A beautiful Molly paint scheme adorned the car. Ran low 7's on a really good day. The car was extensively modified in 1972 by moving the driver forward, the engine back, and plopping a Vega panel truck body to create the famed California Stud rear-engine funny car.

Notes: Former Gas Ronda 70 Mustang, significantly modified with the driver moved forward and the engine aft. The car ran high sixes when all went right, which was rare. - Bill Duke | Dave was at OCIR on May 26 for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 7.15 qualified #15. He faced Gordon Swearingen in the first round, and Bowman's reverser failed after his burnout. So Gordon got to make a solo into round two with the "Sopwith Camel." Bowman raced in the OCIR Lions Championships in June. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 7.24, but another 7.24/204.08 in the opening round lost to Joe Lee's 6.99/197. Dave was runner-up at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 22. It was a sixteen-car show, and Bowman got a single in the first round. In the second round, he lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.13/196 in the "Mr. Ed" car with a 7.59/163.93. He got back into the show on the "break rule" when Lee's car failed to fire in the semifinal. So once again, Rowe raced Bowman, but this time the Vega won with a 7.20/207.85 over Rowe's 7.30/213. Dave tried hard in the final, but his 7.16/191.89 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.77/217.
