Notes: Ran 9.750/141.95 to qualify #9 at NHRA Gainesville. Those were his best NHRA national event times of the year. Ronnie Sox beat him in round one, there, but Melvin made it to the semis at NHRA Dallas (only to fall to Sox again). He qualified #13 at Englishtown at 9.876/138.38, but did not show for round one. Earlier in the year, he had made it to round 3 at Pomona. He made it to round two at the World Finals.

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from National Dragster, 12/29/72. Car had new Lenco. Photo from 1973. Unreal times resulted from game changing transmission and cold Winter weather and were a tenth quicker than Bill Jenkins best ET in the Chevy Vega that revolutionized the class and dominated during the 1972 season. However, this was an NHRA Sanctioned points race, not a match race, and the times stand as the best legal times of the calendar year.

Notes: Yow started the '73 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 and, in the first round, beat Barrie Poole's Pinto with a 9.38. In round two, a 9.34 took out Roy Hill's Duster, and in the semifinals, he ran 9.37 to beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto. That set him up to meet Don Nicholson in another Pinto in the final. Unfortunately, Yow's Dodge broke and slowed to a 10.86/88.66 for the runner-up finish to "Dyno Don's" 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Melvin ran 9.44/145.39 to qualify #4 again. A breaking 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's Challenger at 9.96, but he could not repair in time for round two. Melvin was at National Trail on April 8 for an eight-car show. All cars ran three rounds. He soloed in the first round with a 9.17 (Low ET) at 148.51. He then lost to Bill Jenkins in the next two races with his 9.36/144.46 and 9.33/148.51, losing to the "Grump's" 9.25/149 and 9.18/150. He then came back out later and ran another 9.17 at 149. On June 2, Yow was at Blaney for the third NHRA Division 2 race. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. In the first round, Melvin's 9.33 beat Bo Moxley's 10.14. He got an easy solo in round two before setting a 9.25 track record in the semifinal while beating Max Hurley. His final-round opponent was Ronnie Lyles, and Yow had some bad luck as his transmission broke, and he had to watch Lyles motor to a 9.41 for the win. The following week(June 10), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The Mopars were strong as they took five of the first eight spots for the sixteen-car field. Yow's 9.43/147.29 got him the #7 spot. An opening round 9.51/148.27 beat Hill's 9.77/140, and he beat another fellow Mopar driver in round two, where his 9.53/144.92 stopped Ken Van Cleave's 10.09/122. Eventual winner Don Carlton ran 9.38/147 in the semifinal to defeat Yow's off-pace, 11.65. His next stop was Milan Dragway for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He didn't hang around long as eventual winner Gapp beat him in round one. He really ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32-car field, and his 9.21 qualified #5. He had the second quickest Mopar behind Butch Leal. A 9.23/151.26 in the opening round took out William Parris. In round two, he dropped Hill's 9.36/144 with a 9.18/150.50. In round three, Yow picked it up to 9.14 to defeat Ray Allen's 9.30. But the two quickest Mopars met in the semifinal, and Leal's 9.09/151 got the better of Melvin's 9.15/151. The "Billy the Kid" car was the quickest Mopar in qualifying for the sixteen-car field at the Super Stock Nationals. His 9.18/149.75 got the #4 spot in the show. Richie Zul fouled against him in round one, and he advanced with a 9.26/149.25. Unfortunately, in the next round, he fouled away a 9.22/148.76 while his opponent, Dave Strickler, went into the semifinal with a 9.36/143. The next day(July 29), he was at Connecticut for an eight-car show that had all cars run three rounds. The cars were all NHRA legal. In Yow's first race, his 9.20/148.76 beat Bob Riffle's 9.23/149. He could not race his second race, so Lyles filled in. In the third race, he came back out and ran 9.22/149 to top Paul Blevins' 9.28/146. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Surprisingly, he "only" qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field, and he was replaced in the field by Bob Judd after the Dart had broken. Shortly after that, Atco held an eight-car show. Yow didn't have the best day there as he lost both his races. In his first race, his 9.18/149.50 fell to Bill Jenkins' 9.04/151, and in his second, a 9.29/148.02 lost to Mike Fons' 9.05/151. The AHRA National Challenge race was another 32-car affair. Yow's 9.11/151.26 qualified #3 behind Leal and Gapp. in the opening round, his 9.14/148 defeated John Hagen's 9.47, and he watched Ronnie Sox foul against him in round two, so he eased it to a 9.44/103 to advance. In the third round, his 9.24/141 lost to Nicholson's 9.18/148. Ran 9.08/148, 9.11, and 9.17 in winning three straight against Jenkins at Maple Grove on 4/08/73 (4/13/73 National Dragster). Also 9.09 at NHRA Indianapolis 73 where he qualified 6th 9.162/150.25 and ran 9.052/151.51 in limitations, and 9.08 at Maple Grove 4/08/73. Melvin also ran 151.26 at PRA Tulsa.

A semifinal 9.37 beat Wayne Gapp's ailing Pinto and moved him into the final against "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Unfortunately, Yow's Demon broke, and he slowed to 10.86/88.66 in a runner-up finish to Nicholson's 9.50/141. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again qualified #4, this time with a 9.44/145.39. An easy 9.76 in the first round, beat Larry Huff's 9.96. But he was unable to return for his second-round race against Bob Lambeck. The team had more problems at Gainesville after running 9.19 to qualify #5. The car broke and was unable to run, letting first alternate Bob Glidden take his place in the field. Warner Robins held an eight-car show soon after that, and Yow qualified #1 and ran 9.50 and 9.35 (Low ET) to reach the final. Unfortunately, rain halted the race and the finals were never run. Another eight-car show was run at National Trail in April. Melvin ran a solo 9.17/148.51 in the first round, before losing to Bill Jenkins' 9.25/149 in the semifinals with a 9.36/144.46. Also ran 9.18 at York PA.

Best speed was a booming 144.28 at Englishtown. Ran 9.70s everywhere. Did OK in eliminations, but his best NHRA day was at Indy, where he went three rounds, losing a close one to Butch Leal, 9.73 to 9.77, to miss the semis. Won NHRA Division 3 event in Bowling Green on 9/19/71 over Stu McDade with a 9.79/140.18.

Notes: Ran 9.822/141.28 at Indy 1972. He ran a best of 9.68/143 and was runner-up at the 1972 IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. He also held the AHRA mph record at 142.95 at West Palm Beach, Fla. Ran 9.699/142.18 at Gainesville for his best NHRA national event times. Bobby was at Dragway 42 on August 20 for the IHRA Summernationals. His 9.89 qualified #15, and his 10.06 beat Gordon Collett in the opening round. He failed to make the call for his second-round race against Stuart McDade. Shortly after that, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Bobby had the quickest Mopar at 9.83/140.45. That qualified him #16 in the 32-car field. A 9.82 in round one, beat Jim Liebham, but a second 9.82 in round two fell to Rich Mirarcki's 9.74. A couple of weeks later (September 18), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. A strong 9.46 qualified #4 behind Ronnie Sox, Don Carlton, and Eddie Schartman. He beat Eddie Ratliff in the opening round with a 9.50/146.34, and in round two, Harold Denton fouled against him. Still, Bobby ran 9.44/146.57 to advance. Unfortunately, he lost to Carlton in the semifinal. Dallas International hosted the IHRA Nationals on October 1, and Yowell qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.67. A 9.94 advanced in round one, but a 9.75/142.63 in the second round lost to Mike Fons' 9.58/144.

Notes: Toured with two spare engines. Unique at the time. In September, Yowell was supposed to have a best of three match race against Bill Jenkins' car at Suffolk. But since Jenkins' driver, Larry Lombardo, had crashed and totaled their Monza at Indy, the team could not race at Suffolk. So Frank Iaconio took team Jenkins' place. It was no contest as Frank's Monza was NHRA legal and could only run an 8.65/156 best. Meanwhile, Bobby hoofed the Colt to 8.30/163, 8.34/162, and 8.33/163 to easily win the match.

Notes: Bobby qualified the wild Colt on the bump at NHRA Columbus at 8.851/155.44. He won an upset first round match over Larry Lombardo, 8.850/154.90 to 8.860/156.79, but then dropped an 8.75/150 to 8.890/154.37 decision to Bob Glidden in round two. That was Bobby's only NHRA national event of the year. He spent most of his time on the IHRA and match race trail. We need to confirm the third digit at Columbus round one. Photo is of the car in IHRA and match race trim. This hood scoop was illegal for NHRA competition.

Notes: Bobby was at Rockingham at the end of April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #10 with an 8.55/161, but his first-round 8.63/160 lost to eventual winner Lee Edwards' 8.36/166. He went to Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he qualified #9. He lost to low qualifier Ronnie Sox in the first round. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Bobby's 8.57 qualified #6, and he soloed in the first round, with an 8.53. In the second round, he faced Edwards, and the Vega was just a little too strong, running 8.38 to cover Yowell's 8.62. On July 23, Bobby's 8.54 qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He had the only Mopar that qualified for the show. In the opening round of eliminations, his 8.58/159.85 fell to Warren Johnson's 8.39/163. He had one of the 18 Pro Stock cars at Rockingham on August 20 that attempted to qualify for the eight-car show for the IHRA US Open Championships. Unfortunately, he failed to better the 8.53 "bump." Yowell was running really well at Atlanta on October 15 for the IHRA Winston Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Edwards with an 8.29, and these two would end up meeting in the final. Bobby stopped Pat Musi and Calvin Nabors before meeting with Edwards in the final, where his 8.42 finished runner-up to Lee's 8.29. Bobby also ran 8.30 at Suffolk, VA. Bobby finished #5 in IHRA Pro Stock points.
