Notes: Lew debuted his new Mustang on March 6 at Atlanta for the second NHRA Division 2 race. Only five cars showed for the eight-car field, and his 6.94/200.00 qualified #1. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and ran 7.79/126.05. In the semifinals, his 6.93/201.79 beat Eric Caskey. In the final, he faced Bob Gottschalk, and Bob's 6.63/207 got the win over Lew's 6.83/203.16. The following week (March 13), he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.72/207.85 qualified #8. He improved slightly to a 6.70/206.99 to beat Caskey's 7.02/200. Another 6.70 at 207.37 in round two defeated Pat Walsh's 6.94/200. In the semifinal, he shut down to 8.48/139.10 losing effort against Gottschalk's 7.79/123. Lew also qualified #1 for the third NHRA Division 2 race held at Warner-Robins at the end of March. A 6.95/191.48 got him the spot. In the opening round, his 9.12/101.80 advanced when Rickie Bowie shut down. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and ran 7.01/197.80. In the final, his 7.87/170.77 finished runner-up to Bogie Kell's 6.86/195. The fourth NHRA Division 2 race was held at DeSoto Memorial Speedway on April 10. Only five cars showed, and Winters qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.93/192.71 beat Gary Henderson, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal and ran 13.03/85.06 to advance. The final was a repeat of the last race, right down to the winner. Kell ran 6.80 to win when Lew's Mustang broke. He went to Atlanta the following week (April 17) for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his 7.58/122.11 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the fifth alternate at 7.014/193.54. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals and qualified #7 with a 6.77/206.89.
