Notes: Twig purchased the DuWayne Franklin machine. He qualified the car #3 with a 6.85 at the Fremont New Year's race on January 2. Another 6.85 beat Tom McEwen's 6.87 in the first round, and in the semifinal, a 6.94 beat Jerry Ruth's quicker 6.91. He lost to Bill Leavitt, who won with a 6.64 track record in the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #15 at 7.119/204 but shut off in the first round, and lost to Dale Pulde in the Mickey Thompson Pinto. Ran 7.12 at 212 at Seattle Seafair Nats in August. Was it in this machine or under Franklin's ownership? Twig ran a 7.120 for #5 at the World Finals at Amarillo but lost to Jim Liberman in round one. Notes: Craig "Twig" Zeigler, from 1963 HS yearbook. Built as a back up car for Ed "The Ace" McCulloch. McCulloch never needed the car so it was eventually traded for home improvement work to DuWayne Franklin. Franklin ran the car with a 180 degree crankshaft Hemi on Nitromethane, with Frank Hall doing the driving. They ran mostly in Portland Oregon and Canada. Photo's of the original car are few and far between. Franklin's former wife burned all original photo's of the car. Phil Elliott was gracious enough to send a few that he has found. The car was originally green with stripes and stars and called "the Spider. " The car was eventually sold to Kenney Goodell to fulfill sponsor obligations after he destroyed his car in a crash. Notes: Twig started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Traction there was non-existent, and he ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.15 qualified #8 for the sixteen-car show. In the first round, Bob Pickett got crossed up against him in the "Lil Demon." But in round two, his 7.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.25 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. In April, he was at Renegade Raceway in Washington for a best of three match race against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." The match didn't go too well as he lost three straight to the Charger. Twig qualified #1 with a 6.67 in the eight-car field at Portland International's opener. In the first round, he got some revenge on Chadderton when his 6.67/208 beat Leroy's 6.77/215. In the semifinals, Zeigler stayed consistent, running 6.68/218.44 to beat Mike Snively's 6.71/196 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. He faced Gordie Bonin in the final, and Twig had some problems and shut down to 10.53 while Bonin grabbed the victory with his strong 6.64 run. On April 29, Seattle held its annual Northwest Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Twig qualified #9. In the opening round of eliminations, his troubled 8.92 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.62. Twig was back home at Portland on July 29 for the fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He won the race with a 6.69/220.58 in the final over Denny Savage's 7.18/193 in the "Rat Trap." Zeigler did pretty well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He ran 6.394/230.17 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, against Bobby Rowe and shut down to 11.81. Twig qualified #5 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.415/229.68. In the first round, his 6.53/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.41/226. Twig also ran 6.47 at Portland. Notes: Twig attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.540/221.67 failed to make the 6.45 "bump." He was at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener, where he ran 7.01 to qualify #5. Unfortunately, that forced him to run low qualifier, Don Prudhomme in the first round. Few people were beating the "Snake" at this time, and sure enough, Don's 6.54/193 put Zeigler's 6.89/220.58 on the trailer. Zeigler ran well enough to make the final at the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. He got there by stopping Richard Rogers in the first round, with a 6.58/217.91. In the semifinals, a 6.76/222.77 beat Don Rae's 7.78/130. But in the final, a 6.56/229.00 finished runner-up to Gordie Bonin's 6.32/230. He then went to Edmonton International for the NHRA Division 6 race. An opening round 6.62 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Goodell at 7.08, but his semifinal 6.67 lost to the eventual winner Bill Spevacek's 6.51. He faced Goodell in a best of three match race at Woodburn in mid-July. Twig won all three of the races. Goodell's Demon broke in the first round, and Zeigler soloed with a 6.69/206.42. In the second race, both smoked the tires, but Twig recovered first to win with a 7.49/204.54 over Kenny's 7.52/176. In the final race, Kenny fouled, and Zeigler made an easy pass to win the match. His next stop was at Seattle for its Nitro Jam event. It featured four Top Fuel cars racing four FC's in two rounds of racing. The FC's were given a .30 handicap. In his first race, his 6.68/221.51 lost to Ernie Hall's 6.34/229. In the second race, he ran 6.70/223.41 to beat Gaines Markley's 6.35/230. Soon after, Portland held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and Twig was there. In round one of racing, his 6.43 beat Ken McLean. Another 6.43 at 225.56 beat Nick Harmon in round two, and a great 6.40 beat Gary Densham in round three. It was getting dark, so they ran the two Low ET cars off in the final. On September 21, Twig was competing at the NHRA Fallnationals in Seattle. He qualified #8 with a 6.515/225.56, and in the first round, Gary Rogers fouled against him. Notes: Twig was at Beeline Dragway in January for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #9 with a 6.58/221.67. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced low qualifier, Gary Burgin. Zeigler went up in tire smoke and shut off to 13.92/59.60. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.338/215.82 qualified #15. A first-round 6.610/216.85 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.352/212.76. He was at Firebird's Sixth Annual Ignitor Championships in April, but he shut off in the first round, with fuel-related problems. Traction was horrible at Seattle for its opening race of '76. Twig won his first race with a 7.69/210.77, but he lost in the next round. He was back in Seattle on May 2 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener, but it was rained out and re-run the following week. Unfortunately, Twig was unable to return for the rain date. Twig was the first alternate at NHRA Seattle in September with a 6.553/222.22. That was his last NHRA national event of the year.
