Notes: Note the correct spelling of 'LeColst' per Bill Schultz. | Kelly qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.97/191.08. He beat Ron Colson in the first round, with a 7.95/189.06 and another 7.95 at 189.46 beat Mark Pieri in round two. He smoked to an 8.03/185.18, but it was still enough to beat low qualifier Gary Murphy's 8.04/163. That put him into the final against Gordon Collett in which he lost. |

Notes: AKA The Grenadiers. The car had no driveshaft. Roger Lee sez: Late 1967 at San Fernando, Kelly Brown goes through the lights at 7.24 at 224.23. Jim Brissette said he had a mild load in the 354 at 95%. Brown was driving this car at Lions for the big 64-car PDA Championships. He lost to Bob Hightower in the opening round. |

Notes: Ran 7.24/217 and was runner-up to Steve Carbone in the Atlas Oil Tool car at a huge meet at Riverside for the HRM Championships on 3/24/68. After the runner-up finish, he continued to drive for Dave McKenzie when they showed up at Lions on April 13. It was an eight-car show, but there were so many cars that they ran a second eight for the non-qualifiers. Brown just missed qualifying for the first eight, but his 7.16 was the number one qualifier for the second eight. He won his first-round race with a 7.25/138.03, but he lost in the semifinals. He was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show on May 4, but his 7.64 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Joe Lee's 7.39. He qualified #1 at Lions on May 11 for an eight-car show with a 7.04/215.78. Unfortunately, his 7.12/212.26 lost to Tommy Larkin's slower 7.25/175 in the opening round. Kelly was at Lions on August 17 for a four-car show. His 6.95/211.76 qualified #2 behind Rick Ramsey's 6.85/222. He repeated his qualifying ET in the first round, as his 6.95 at 213.28 defeated James Warren's 7.08/223. Brown went on to win the race. Kelly qualified #10 at the NHRA World Finals in October at 7.237 (no speed). He lost in round one, to John Mulligan, 7.12/184 to 7.31/187.50. |

Notes: 1969 NHRA Springnationals (Dallas) Top Fuel Runner-up. Ran 6.99 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69, 7.10 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship, 6.75 at Dallas International Motor Speedway NHRA 69. | Lou Baney had a great season in '67 with Don Prudhomme behind the wheel, but in '68 the wins didn't come so easily. Ford was putting more emphasis on it's Super Stock program and its new 429 engine. The 427 SOHC motor was now old news and Ford wasn't helping with developing it more for Top Fuel competition. Don talked with Lou about going on his own for '69 and Baney gave him his blessings. Even Lou was considering switching to a Chrysler for '69. Instead, he hired Kelly Brown to drive and stuck with the SOHC for another year. They had a pretty good season together other than when Lou got run over at OCIR. This is how it went. Kelly qualified tenth with a 7.08/223.88 at the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Kurzawa in the first round. He failed to qualify at the second OCIR All-Pro race. Another first-round loss came at the Bakersfield March Meet where Tommy Allen's 7.25/193 beat his off pace 7.65/163. On March 16 at the HRM Championships, he qualified #20 with a 7.10, but a sub-par 7.24/200 in the first round, lost to Frank Pedregon's 6.98/221.13. Better things were to come for the SOHC powered car, when on March 29 at the final OCIR All-Pro event, a 7.01/218.44 qualified fourth. Another 7.01/194.80 beat James Warren in the first round, but Steve Carbone beat Kelly in the semifinal. Lions held an eight-car show on April 19 and Kelly qualified #3 with a 6.74. In the first round, he took a bit of a snooze on the line and his 6.86/195.22 lost to Rick Stewart's slower 6.94/211. On April 26, he ran an eight-car show at OCIR. He qualified #3 with a 6.81/226.70 (Top Speed). A first-round 6.86/224.42 put him in the semifinal where another strong 6.85/222.76 beat Gerry Glenn to put him in the final where Kelly's 6.84/205.94 beat James Warren for the title. On May 10, Irwindale held an eight-car show and a first-round wheelstand against Glenn's 6.96 finished the day for them. A week later (May 17), they showed up at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. A first-round 7.42/199.10 beat Denny Fitt's ailing 8.07/172. Warren fouled against Brown in the second round and Leland Kolb did likewise in the semis. In the final, Kelly set Low ET with a 6.88/221.66 beating Gary Cochran. Another sixteen-car show was held at Irwindale on May 24 for the Division 7 Opener. A holeshot 6.94 beat Butch Maas' 6.88 in the first round, but Warren got some revenge for his loss to Kelly the previous week, as a 6.87/225 defeated Kelly's 6.99/213.38 in the second round. Fremont hosted NHRA's second Division 7 race on June 8. Over 40 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Brown ran 6.93 to qualify #5. In the first round, he fell off to a 7.04/219 that lost to Jim Davis' 7.00/208. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, a 6.75/214.79 qualified third. He ran 6.92/215.31 over Kerry Mackenroth, 6.73/220.04 over Dave Babler's 6.96/221, and 6.86/215.82 over George Cox, leading to a semifinal race with Baney's previous driver from the year before, Don Prudhomme. In a wheel to wheel battle, Kelly's 6.78/213.27 just nipped Prudhomme's 6.79/215.31. In the final, a blown cylinder head slowed the car to a 6.91/184.04 that lost to Hank Westmoreland's 6.84/214. On July 5 at OCIR's Nitro Championships, Ron Hampshire fouled against Brown in the first round, but a tire-smoking 7.67/212.26 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.24/218 in the second frame. At Irwindale's second annual Race with a Reason on July 12, Kelly set Top Speed at 225.00 and was to have faced Ron Hampshire in the final of the sixteen-car show, but the final was called off due to the late hour (after 2 am). Things went bad on July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Kelly qualified ninth with a 6.93 and in the first round, was to race Tommy Allen. The linkage got stuck and Lou Baney went to work un-sticking it. Just as the throttle got free the car launched forward with the rear slick pinning Lou against the red-hot zoomie pipes. He was taken to the hospital for his burns and did recover. But while Lou was laid up the Baney-Brown car was also laid up and Kelly went to work driving Leland Kolb's car. Kelly ran Kolb's car the rest of the season until December 14 when he showed up at Irwindale for an eight-car show back in Baney's Ford. The team qualified third with a 6.80 and lasted until Gerry Glenn's 7.34 beat Kelly's 7.55 in the semifinal. |

Notes: Runner up at 1969 NHRA Nationals. Destroked iron Keith Black 426. Photo from 1969 World Finals, Dallas, TX. After Lou Baney's accident with the Folger Ford car at the PDA Championships on July 19, Brown was without a ride. Leland Kolb stepped in and gave Brown a job driving for him. They were very successful the rest of the year. On August 9, they raced at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Kelly singled in the first round, when Bob Williams shut off on the line and in a twin tire-smoking battle in the semifinals, his 7.01/204.08 beat Gary Cochran's 7.54. In the final, James Warren fouled away Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.87/222.77 giving Brown's close 6.88/204.54 the victory. At Indy, a 6.66/222.22 qualified #16. In the first round, Doc Halladay fouled against him. In round two, John Wiebe fouled against him. In the third round, Dave Powers slept against him, running a 6.59/225 that lost to Kelly's 6.71/210.28. In the semifinal, Jim Paoli's clutch exploded and Kelly was in the final. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don ran a 6.51/223 for the win to Kelly's 6.78/205.01 runner-up effort. He won the Division 7 race at Irwindale over a sixteen-car field on September 14. He set Low ET and a track record, in the final with a 6.91/214 that beat Don Argee. And at the Division 7 final at OCIR the following week (September 20), he won again. A semifinal 6.79 over Dwight Salisbury stood for Low ET. In the final, a 6.82/222.22 beat Carl Olson's tire smoking 7.26/201.79. He ran the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 4 where a 7.09/172.74 got past the first-round. He singled in the second round when Pat Foster broke. Don Soltz fouled against him in round three (32-car field), and another foul by Dwight Salisbury put him into the final against Olson. This time, Olson came out on top with a 7.13/196 over Kelly's 7.28/216.34 in a tire-smoking race. A 6.80/213.27 qualified #6 at the NHRA World Finals on October 26. Kelly singled in the first round, when Ken Bernstein's engine wouldn't stay lit, but in the second round, it was his own engine that lost fire giving Bennie Osborn a single. On November 9, he suffered a rare first-round loss at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions event. Salisbury's holeshot 7.71/211 beat Kelly's 7.55/209.78. He more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the next PDA Race of Champions event at Sacramento on November 16, beating James Warren in the final with a 6.75/209.30. |

Notes: Kelly Brown started the season in Lou Baney's SOHC Ford-powered car, but Brown and Billy Tidwell switched rides at the beginning of April. The switch was made because Baney was left to racing in southern California due to business commitments, and Kelly wanted to tour, as did Tidwell's car owner, Leland Kolb. So, on April 11 at Irwindale, Kelly qualified fifth in an eight-car field and made it into the semi's only to go up in smoke against Gary Cochran. At OCIR on May 16, Gerry Glenn's 6.81/213 beat his off pace 7.18/172.41 in round one. Ron Hampshire's 6.79/223 beat Kelly's 6.83/218.97 in the first round, at the Nitro Championships at OCIR on July 3. On July 11, for the AHRA All-American at Lion's, Brown had a strange day. A great first-round 6.65/220.04 beat a shutting-off James Warren. An easy 10-second pass due to a red-light by Don Moody got him into the semifinal. He broke against Jim Dunn, but Jim fouled, and Kelly's 8.27 put him in the finals. He couldn’t make the final, and Steve Carbone won. At the PDA US Pro Dragster Championships on July 25, He fouled next to Don Prudhomme in the second round. Billy Tidwell stopped Brown in the first round, at OCIR's Anniversary race on August 15. | Kelly’s best NHRA national event times were 6.792/223.32 in the Lou Baney car. This car got a best of 6.892/193.96 on the NHRA trail. |

Notes: The "Foulger Ford" team started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. In the first round, Brown beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.99/212 with a 6.97/210.76, but he fouled against Gary Ritter in round two. Kelly qualified #2 for the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, but the motor threw a rod, and he was unable to compete in eliminations. He was replaced in the field by Gary Cochran. At the second OCIR All-Pro race held on January 18. Brown set a new track record 6.63 to qualify low, but once again, the gremlins kicked in as he had burned a piston and was unable to run in eliminations. At the AHRA Winternationals, Brown was the second quickest car in first-day qualifying. In the opening round, Jimmy King fouled against him, but he lost to Bob Murray in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, almost 90 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field. Brown ran 6.852/222.22 to qualify #6. In round one, he improved to 6.792/223.32 to beat Fred Farndon's 7.29/190. Kelly lost fire in round two and lost to Tony Nancy. Motor failure was becoming more and more common with the SOHC Fords trying to keep up with the "stroked" Hemis. Ed Pink stated that at this time, the engine block was lucky to last more than a round or two before cracking. On February 22, Kelly was at the third OCIR All-Pro. He qualified, but he had to step aside with engine issues and let Tony Nancy replace him in eliminations. On March 8, he was at Lions for the second AHRA Grand American. He won his first-round race with a 6.70 but burned all eight pistons and could not make round two. The big Ford could run with the best of them but at a much heavier price. In April, Bill Tidwell took over driving the car, and Kelly moved into Tidwell's former ride, Leland Kolb's car. The team made the switch because both Leland and Brown wanted to tour more, while Lou Baney wanted to stay in Southern California due to business commitments (he owned a dealership). |

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation. |

Notes: After leaving the Barry Setzer camp in the fall of 1971, Kelly started driving the repainted Mr. Ed Charger of Ed Wills. He qualified on the bump at the 1971 NHRA Supernationals with a 7.06 and lost to Leroy Goldstein in the first round, after losing fire on the burnout. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, he qualified for the Dodge team and ran a best of 6.84 at 215.82. |

Notes: This car was completed on Saturday, November 18, and made one full qualifying pass at the NHRA Supernationals that same day. The resulting 6.70/210.00 run was not good enough to make history's quickest funny car field. Kelly qualified #14 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). He broke against Billy Meyer in round one. Although initial runs were promising, handling problems, which were eventually traced to the poor aerodynamics of the Vega Panel body, kept this car from ever reaching its potential. Every Vega Panel tried in funny car was evil handling. A lack of downforce caused them to get loose on the top end, and many were lost in crashes. |

Notes: Brown started the season driving for "Mr. Ed" at Fremont's New Year's Day Race on January 2. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, the transmission broke against Gene Snow. At the 1972 Lions Grand Premiere (January 15/16), he was the last qualifier with a 6.64. A first-round 6.71/213.77 beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.89 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Kelly used a holeshot in the second round to beat Pat Foster, who was now driving Kelly's former ride, the Barry Setzer Vega. Kelly's 6.58/223.88 was good enough to beat Pat's quicker 6.54/223.32. He subsequently lost to Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) in the semifinals. Kelly was the 20th alternate at the NHRA Winternationals (times unknown). On February 13, he was at the third OCIR All-Pro race, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field. An off-pace 8.00 lost to eventual winner Foster's 6.85 in the first round. Kelly also made the semifinals at the 1972 March Meet, losing to Jim Dunn. |

Notes: I don't think this car ran that quick in '77? It still had cast-iron heads. I have a magazine pic with a caption that refers to this as a 6.20 race car. It was the addition of Don Garlits' modified aluminum heads in 78 that really picked up the performance. Tim Simplot |

Notes: NHRA Champ 1978. Ran 5.93/240 in eliminations at Indy 1978. Qualified number two at Pomona 78 at 5.871/238.72. Kelly Brown was in the right place at the right time in '78. He was driving Jim Brissette's Donovan-powered car, and the Donovan engine was making a comeback. At the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were running Donovans, and Kelly's one-shot qualifier of 5.87/238.72 put him in the #2 spot behind Don Garlits' 5.77. Brown's opening round effort of 5.94/235 beat Jeb Allen's 6.06/236 and a 6.06/239 in round two-beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.13/236. He picked up to 5.88/237 in the semifinals to turn back Rick Ramsey's 6.25/219. His final round opposition was unheralded Gordon Fabeck. Kelly scored the victory with a 6.12/226 over Fabeck's 6.48/217. At Bakersfield's last 32-car Top Fuel field, Kelly's 6.10 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he and Garlits took the top two spots in qualifying. This time Brown's 6.00 (Low ET) at 235.60 led the field. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, Kelly ran another 6.00/240 to take out Dick LaHaie's 6.30/221. Yet another 6.00/224 in round two beat Richard Tharp's tire-smoking 7.41 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He slowed (?) to a 6.06/238 in a thumping of Marvin Graham's 6.32/236 in the semifinals, and he looked like a sure bet to get his second NHRA win in a row. Garlits had only run a best of 6.16 in eliminations. However, bad luck set in as Brown lost a motor just off the line, and he had to watch as Garlits smoked the tires to 6.55 for the victory. Brown didn't have to wait long before winning again. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals in April, he beat Mike Tarter in the final with a 6.11/235.68 over Mike's 6.28/234. Earlier, he almost matched Tharp's 6.04 Low ET of the meet with a 6.05 run in the semifinals over Johnny Abbott. On May 7, he won the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Seattle. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, with a 6.03/232.55 to Rob's 6.06/236. In the semifinals, his 5.93/236.84 (Low ET) beat Fabeck's 6.03/240, and in the final, his holeshot 6.26/211.76 beat Graham Light's quicker 6.15/238. The following week, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. He was late in arriving after towing from his win in Seattle. The team was lacking parts for their Donovan, and they were forced to make things do. After they showed up, Kelly cracked off a 5.97/236.22 to qualify low for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, the car lost fire on the line, and after he got it restarted, he had to run without the benefit of a burnout. He beat Stan Shiroma's 6.39/216 in with a 6.21/200.00. In round two, the same thing happened; he lost fire, restarted it, and ran without the burnout. This time his 6.39/179.64 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.01/230. His winning ways continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. But his transporter let him down on the way to National Trail, and he got there just before tech closed. After two failed attempts to qualify, a last-ditch effort of 5.96/236.84 qualified him #5 in the show. After that, it was smooth sailing. A 6.10/233.76 beat Muldowney's 6.15/238 and a 6.12/233.16 in round two beat Light's 6.34/206. A consistent 6.11/234.37 in the semifinals turned back Tharp's 6.14/241 and put him into the final against Frank Bradley. The two had a great race, but Brown showed that he could cut a light as his 6.09/238.72 beat Frank's 6.05/238 for his third NHRA National event win of '78. Things did not go so well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He only qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.15, and he lost to Paul Longenecker in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he scored yet another win. It was an eight-car show, and seventeen cars attempted to qualify. Brown was on the "bump" with his 6.01. But during eliminations, he picked up. A first-round 5.91/233.16 beat Garlits' 6.16/222, and a semifinal 5.97/230.17 stopped Light's 6.19/225. He faced Abbott in the final, and an off-pace 6.31/220.58 was enough to win Abbott's equally troubled 6.40/213. Before the NHRA US Nationals, Kelly went to the Car Craft Magazine Awards show, awarded "Person of the Year." Did Kelly run 5.809 somewhere this year? We formerly listed that, but he did not run it in NHRA competition. |

Notes: Photo from 1979 US Nationals, where he ran a 5.81. Ran 5.99/245 in a first-round loss to Bruce Hagestad at NHRA Englishtown 7/79. Was Brown from Calabasas or Cypress? The Over the Hill Gang team had a fabulous NHRA season. They ran 5.80s, 5.90s, and 6.0s everywhere and won a lot. Best times were 5.800 at Seattle and 245.90 at Englishtown. |
