Notes: Brown was at Odessa Raceway Park on May 5 for an eight-car show. He qualified #7 with a 7.83/206.88. George Cox fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 7.34/199. In the semifinal, his 7.23/216.34 fell to eventual winner Bennie Osborn's 7.19/200. He was back at Odessaon June 15 for a Pro-Fuel Circuit race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.50, but in the first round, Kenny Bernstein's 7.61 beat his quicker 7.56. The following week (June 23), he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.18 at Amarillo for another Pro-Fuel Circuit race. He beat Gary Bailey driving the "Carroll Brothers" car, and Gorge Cox in the "Banzai" to reach the final where he was up against Bernstein. Unfortunately, he lost to Kenny. Larry was back at Amarillo in July for the Texas Championships. A 7.52/207.84 qualified #3, and in round one, his 7.60 beat Watus Simpson's 7.72 in Vance Hunt's car. He had a close race with Bernstein in the semifinals that saw his 7.49 advance to the final over Kenny's 7.51. He faced Jimmy Nix in the final, and despite running 7.56, he lost to Nix's 7.43. |

Notes: On June 15 Larry qualified on the bump at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.98/218.44. He lost to Dwight Salisbury in the first round. He was at Corpus Christi for a Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race where he qualified #6 with a 7.49 in the sixteen-car field. He improved to 7.38 in the first round, to beat Mike Tarter, but in the second round, he fouled away a 7.39 against Gary Bailey. Larry qualified at the NHRA Division 5 race at Opelousas, Louisiana, on June 29. That was a pretty big deal since there were 23 cars going for the eight available spots. It took a 6.99 or better just to make the field. Unfortunately for Larry, a first-round 6.87 by Chip Woodall stopped his 6.99. On July 20, Boyd and Brown were at Dallas for the NHRA Division 4 race. Larry lasted until the second round before losing to Richard Tharp. At the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley, Brown lost to Woodall in the first round. Larry qualified #5 with a 7.26 on September 7 at the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo. In the first round, he ran a 7.16/234.37 (Top Speed) over Gary Bailey. In the semifinal, he singled with a 7.26 when Steve Carbone's car got stuck in reverse. Unfortunately, he fouled in the final against Tharp. The following week saw Brown take runner-up honors again. This time at an eight-car show at Dallas. He qualified #2 with a 6.96 and in the first round, a 6.92/208.33 beat George Cox. Another 6.92 beat Dan Rightsell in the semis, but in the final he lost fire giving Gary Bailey an easy win. |

Notes: Larry was at Amarillo on September 7 for NHRA's Division 4 race. He qualified #6 in the field with a 7.30 just behind the "other" Larry Brown who qualified #5 with a 7.26. Talk about confusing. In the first round, Larry ran 7.44 to beat Bennie Osborn's 7.49. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 7.26 when Steve Carbone driving the "Soapy Sales" car got stuck in reverse. This put him into the final against Richard Tharp. Unfortunately, Brown fouled, giving Tharp the win. |

Notes: Brown debuted Robert Anderson's new car at Amarillo on March 28. He was there for an eight-car show. On the car's first full pass Saturday, he ran 7.26. That was followed by a 7.31. In Sunday morning's final qualifying session, Larry ran 7.01 to qualify second behind Vic Brown's 6.96. He improved even more in the first round, of eliminations, where his 6.94 defeated Chip Woodall's 7.00. Larry then reset the track record with a 6.89 in the semifinal that beat Watus Simpson's 6.97. He faced Raymond Beadle, who was driving Prestin Cunningham's car in the final. Beadle had not broken into the sixes during qualifying or in eliminations. But he stepped up to a 6.98 that beat Brown's later but better 6.90. Shortly after that, he was at LaPlace for another eight-car show. Unfortunately, his off-pace 7.36 in the opening round lost to Mike Martini's 7.11. |

Notes: Famous for blowing the block out of the car at the Tulsa PRA Race. The run was featured in the movie Funny Car Summer. Larry was the #11 qualifier (times unknown) at IHRA Dallas in June, but he lost fire in round one and lost to Dan Rightsell. He also ran 6.65 at Gateway. He attended the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo. He qualified #16 for the Western team and #27 overall. Lost round one to Charles Durel, 7.05/195 to 7.17/194.80. That was Larry's only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida, but we do not see him on the qualifying lists. The bump spot was a 6.63 by Herm Petersen, and Larry reportedly ran 6.44 there, but he was not one of the 16 qualifiers. Keeping the ET but not the location. Who can tell us what happened there? Entered NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/74 but did not show. |

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Larry was at Tri-City in May for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with a 6.76/198.67, which was pretty good considering such names as Paul Longenecker, Dick LaHaie, and Dick Rosberg failed to qualify. In the first round, his 6.54/211.76 beat Gary Dye's 6.61/200, but he had problems in his semifinal race against Bill Pryor and shut down. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals as no Chevy-powered cars made the field. He did have the only Chevy in the field at Edgewater on June 29 for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified in the dreaded #5 spot, setting up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Don Garlits. Garlits easily won their match with a 6.07/233, and he went on to win the race. |

Notes: Larry qualified #1 at the 3rd NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley with a 6.27. It was pretty impressive considering that #2 qualifier was Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at 6.31. Unfortunately, Larry lost early and Beadle went on to win. |

Notes: Brown was at Green Valley Raceway's opener in March. Ten cars ran, and in round one, his 6.49 beat Chip Woodall. Unfortunately, the run hurt some parts, and he was unable to return in the semifinal. On April 16, he was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division 4 race. His 6.62/214.28 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at 6.770/209.79. Larry then lost an amazing first-round match against Tom Anderson. Anderson's 6.770/216.34 just held off Brown's right-there 6.780/218.44. He then went to Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He ran a best of 6.44/222.22 at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. Larry ran 6.80 at the Ozark Nats on 7/04/78. He then traveled to Baton Rouge in July for the final NHRA Division 4 race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. He beat Jim White in the "Tulsa Oiler" in the first round, with a 6.95/206. But the car broke in the semifinal, and he was unable to run eventual winner Tom Anderson. |

Notes: Larry was at Indianapolis in April for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.22/230.76 but failed to reach the finals. The following week (April 27), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.09 best failed to qualify for the all-five second field. NHRA ran the second Division 3 race at Edgewater in May. Brown ran 6.17 to qualify third, but a troubled 12.32 in the opening round lost to Mark Oswald. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #12 with a 6.05/233.76. He made an easy solo in the first round when opponent Jeb Allen shut off with no oil pressure. In round two, his 6.25/226 advanced when Bob Noice broke a couple of rods and oiled down the track. Lady luck seemed to be on his side as a 6.21/234 advanced in the semifinals when Steve Stephens fouled. But his luck ran out there as in the final, he faced Shirley Muldowney. She had been running 6.0s in all three of her elimination runs, and Brown was in trouble unless she broke. Sure enough, Shirley ripped off a bracket like 6.04/233 to win over Brown's 6.57/163.04 shut-off run. It was still an excellent showing for the "Roach Coach." After such a good showing, Larry hoped for more of the same at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #14 and advanced over a wheelstanding Dave Uyehara in round one. In round two, he faced Allen, and both had problems. Jeb broke a rear-end but coasted through as the winner when Larry blew an engine. Brown followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 6.26/214.28 ended up as the third alternate. He qualified #29 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.030/238.09, and his 6.082/220.58 in the first round wasn't too bad, but Allen's 5.918/245 was better and advanced Jeb into round two. | This race is interesting because we formerly listed Larry at 5.919 for this year, but his best NHRA national event ET was the 6.030 at Indy. He did run 6.0's almost everywhere. We think the formerly-listed 5.919 was confused with Jeb Allen's winning time against Larry in round one at Indy, 5.918 to 6.082. Let us know if you have evidence of Larry going 5.919 this year. |

Notes: We don't have times for Larry from any NHRA national events this year. Our Indy DNQ list is only 16 entries long and ends with a 5.98, so it's possible he just didn't make the cut of cars reported. |
