Notes: Ran 7.26 National Record at Bristol, TN, on 9/25/66. Where was the 7.06 from? Ran 7.74/198.22 at Lions on 2/01/66. | Vic was at Tulsa for the NHRA Division 4 race on July 3. He won his first-round race with a 7.81, but in the semifinal, he fouled away a 7.73/200 against Fred Swanda. At the NHRA Division 2 final at Bristol, Vic had a great day. He won the event by getting a first-round solo. In the second round, he set Low ET with a 7.22/210.76 to beat Pete Robinson's Ford. In the final, he met Bill Mullins, but Bill lost a clutch and Brown stormed to a 7.30/195.64 to take the victory. Earlier in the day, he had reset the NHRA record to 7.26. Ran 7.41 at Indy Nationals.

Notes: NHRA record holder. Vic Brown had his most successful year driving a fuel dragster in '68 for Bob Creitz and Ed Greer. He started the season by setting Top Speed at the AHRA Winternationals. AHRA used Fosdick timing equipment, while most other tracks used Chrondek. The ETs and speeds often differed from what we were used to seeing on Chrondek timers. It was reported that Vic set Top Speed at 225.22, yet in the first round, he beat Dave Beebe with a 7.13/226.12. He lost before the finals, but it was good to know if anyone knows the official Top Speed at the AHRA event. Brown had some bad luck at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and as a result, he failed to qualify. In a qualifying pass, he had the parachute fail, and he ended up hitting the hay bales and bending the chassis. So, he attempted to qualify the Nash and Williams car with the Creitz and Greer car out of commission. Not three hours after he hit the hay bales, he did it again in their car when, once again, the 'chute failed. At the Stardust Open held in Las Vegas just two weeks after Pomona, it was surprising to see Vic back behind the wheel of the "Creitz and Donovan" car so soon after the accident. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.21. Vic ran as well as a 7.04 (twice) on the way to the final, where he met Tom McEwen. Unfortunately, he fouled, giving McEwen the win. He grabbed a big win at the PDA Championships on March 3 at OCIR. It was a 64-car show, and Brown had a couple of easy rounds, but in the semifinals, he ran a 6.80 to advance over a fouling Chris Karamesines. In the final, he was up against Don Garlits. He must have had "Big Daddy" on edge as Don fouled, and Vic eased to victory with a 9.31/102.29. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 7.16 qualified #23 in the 32-car field, but he lost to Dwight Salisbury in the opening round. On March 24, he was at Riverside for the HRM Championships. It was another 32-car show, and he lost to McEwen in round three. But McEwen broke, so Brown was reinstated for the semifinals. It was Kelly Brown vs. Vic Brown (no relation), and Kelly's 7.42 beat Vic's sleepy 7.29. Don Cook beat him in the final at Kansas City for the Texas Pro Fuel Circuit, and the two finished in the same positions at the Texas Pro Circuit race at Green Valley Raceway on May 11. He qualified #2 with a 7.47/211.26 and set a track record 7.15 in the first round. Vic ran another 7.15 in the semifinals at 192.70 to advance to the final. In the final, both cars had trouble with Cook blowing his clutch but still won with a 7.89 when Brown shut down with problems. Vic won Oklahoma's Pro Circuit race on May 12, beating a sixteen-car field. He set Top Speed at 221.12 on the way to the win. In the final, he beat Cook. A week later (May 18), he was at another race in Oklahoma City. He had a good first-round race with Cook, winning with a 7.18/220.00 over Don's 7.27/218. He won his semifinal race to advance into the final, where he ran Bennie Osborn. Vic fouled away a 7.25/219.84, which gave Bennie a 7.21/220 victory. At the end of May, he was at Pittsburgh for its Eastern Fuel Dragster Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Connie Kalitta's Ford in the opening round. It rained after their race, and the race was postponed a week until the 29th. Scott Wilson's Ford lost fire in his semifinal race, and Vic made an easy run to advance. He went up against Chuck Kurzawa, driving for the "Ramchargers" in the final, and his 7.15/216.86 finished runner-up to Chuck's 7.09/209. Brown had an eventful day at Bristol on June 9 for the AHRA Springnationals. He was running really well, and in the semifinal, he came up against Cook. Both ended up getting disqualified as first Brown fouled, and then Cook crossed the centerline. The following week, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.94/220.68 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. In round one, his late 6.97/219.50 lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 7.08/208. Also ran 6.945 at NHRA Englishtown 6/68.

Notes: Vic Brown was runner-up to Gene Snow at York 1970 NHRA Summernationals in this car (7.47 to Snow's winning 7.27). He won an Englishtown Funny Car show at a Low ET/Top Speed 7.43/198.23 over Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Dodge. Early in September, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. There was an eight-car field of FCs, and in round one, Vic's off-pace 8.51/190.67 lost to Arne Swensen's 7.86/180. He did not run in the semi-final, yet somehow got lined up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. JJ's 7.30/201 got the win over his 7.61/184.04. Soon after that (September 20), Vic was at Epping for the New England FC Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and in the first round, he lost to JJ. He got back in the show when Tom Sneden broke after winning his first-round race. He didn't get to stick around long as he again lined up against Liberman and lost again. This time JJ's 7.03/207 put his 7.43/203 on the trailer for good. Brown qualified with a 7.59 at Dallas International for the NHRA World Finals. In the opening round, he made an easy run when Jake Johnston broke a transmission in the "Blue Max." In the second round, he lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.86. | AKA Black Shadow. Notes: Brown was at Beeline Dragway in Arizona near the end of January for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and he had the quickest Donovan qualifier at 6.18/211.76 (#3). His opponent, Dave Settles, lost fire in the "Carroll Brothers" car in the first round. Vic made an easy solo to advance. In round two, he beat Jerry Wilson with a fireballing 6.26/211.76. The team was done for the day. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was rough, and Brown ran 6.94/208.81 on the first weekend (February 3) of qualifying to take the #6 spot in the 32-car field. Rain interfered, and the race was rescheduled for February 18. Brown was unable to improve on his ET, but he did improve his speed to 218.80. He had been bumped back to #8 on the starting grid, but the team could not stay through all the rain delays and headed home before eliminations. Vic was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.41/212.00 beat Steve Carbone, who exploded a supercharger. In the semifinals, he beat Settles with a 6.37/215.31. He faced Flip Schofield in the final, and he shut off with a troubled 7.34/124.00 while Schofield grabbed the win with a 6.74/216. He won the AHRA Grand American at Tulsa over a fouling Don Garlits. A couple of weeks later (April 29), he was in another final. This time it came at the IHRA Longhorn Nationals in Dallas. This one came with some controversy. Brown ran 6.23, 6.22, and 6.18 to beat Joe Haggerty, Dale Funk, and Settles (in that order). In the final, he went up against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. The Christmas tree malfunctioned, and Goldstein shut off while Vic ran 6.17 for the apparent victory. But IHRA officials called for a re-run. Car owner Bob Creitz refused. Goldstein then made a single for the victory. Vic did appear in the final but on foot. In May, the team attended the AHRA Grand American at Green Valley Raceway. It was a sixteen-car field, and Vic lasted until round two, where his 6.48 lost to Settles' 6.32. The AHRA Springnationals was run at Denver, Colorado's Century 21 Raceway on June 3. Vic qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.68. He beat Dan Rightsell in the first round before losing to Dan Richins in round two. Brown was at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the NHRA Division 4 race. He qualified #1 and, in the first round, set Low ET with a track record 6.46 at 216.87 in beating John Wiebe's 6.61/209. Unfortunately, he lost to the eventual winner, Goldstein, in the semifinals. The team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.192 qualified #5. Vic beat Dick LaHaie in round one, with a 6.29/217, and in round two, his 6.32/224.43 beat Bill Wigginton's 6.39/197. But in the semifinals, the car broke against Jim Bucher. The best NHRA times were 6.192 at the Summernationals and 230.76 at Indy. Bret Kepner - 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Qualifying.
