Notes: Bruins had just gotten his Top Fuel driver's license a week before he was driving Herm Petersen's car at Portland International's Rose Festival Drag Championships on June 6. It was a fourteen-car show, and he qualified #2 with a 6.14. In the opening round, the two low qualifiers got to make solos. Rob ran 6.12/237.46 (Top Speed). He got another solo in round two when Stan Shiroma could not run after losing an engine in the first round. This time Bruins advanced with a 6.10/226. In the semifinals, he came up against Hank Johnson. Hank had been running 6.20s in eliminations, but he picked up to a track record 5.93/233 to beat Bruins' 6.22/232. He won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. A 6.24/193.13 beat Maynard Garrity's 6.53/206 in round one, and a 6.12/233.76 in the semifinal topped Johnson's 6.26/227. He was to face Bob Mitchell in the final, but Bob had problems and was a no-show. Bruins made a 6.41/166.97 solo for the win. Rob did not race at the first PDA Championship race held in Seattle. Rob beat a fouling Garlits at the second PDA Championships race at Fremont. His final round times were 5.96/236.22. Rob finished #2 in Division 6 in 1976 while filling in for Herm Petersen. He also ran 6.07/229 at Irwindale WCS. |

Notes: Rob failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, his 6.63/221.13 qualified #7 for the eight-car show. He got a solo in the opening round of eliminations when Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian," broke. But in the semifinal, his 6.91/171.42 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.41/211. The team then went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where they failed to qualify. Ran 6.96 at Firebird. |

Notes: Rob went to semis at Indy 1978, running a best of 5.882/239 in eliminations. Qualified at 78 Winters at 6.010/238.09. Won NHRA Ontario Finals over Gary Beck. Ran 240 plus several times, but the credited 247.58 at Ontario was probably 242.58 (the only valid 247 runs were 247.25 and 247.93). He did run a legit 245.23 at Seattle. We need to confirm those numbers. Ran 6.03 to qualify #4 at PDA Orange County on July 29. |

Notes: Rob did not win any national events in 1979, but consistent late-round finishes won the team the World Championship. Gaines Markley had driven his own car in Top Fuel competition for several years before back problems made it too painful to drive. He quit driving at the end of the '77 season. He had watched Rob Bruins drive for Herm Petersen and later Frank Hall and asked Bruins if he would like to drive for him. The new team was formed in '78. They were very successful in the Northwest and at the NHRA National events. Rob was runner-up at the NHRA US Nationals and had won the Fallnationals as well as the World Finals. After that late-season performance, they decided that they would go for the NHRA World Championship crown for '79. Obviously, the rest is history, as they won the title. Bruins won five NHRA Divisional races but failed to win any national events. Rob started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #15. An opening round 5.97 advanced over Gary Omlin, and in round two, he beat Gary Ormsby. A semifinal 5.85/245.23 beat Gary Beck's blower, popping 5.99/198, and set up a final round meeting with Bob Noice. Unfortunately for Bruins, his car had a fuel leak, and he was shut off on the line, giving Noice a solo for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.94/243.24. Marvin Graham smoked the tires against him in the first round, and his 5.94/241.93 advanced. In round two, it was Don Garlits' turn to smoke the tires against him, and Rob again advanced, this time with a 6.07/240. In the semifinals, Bruins' luck went sour as the rear end broke, and eventual winner Brown ran an easy 6.43/237 to win. The team then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Rob set Low ET in the final with a 6.13/233.67 to win the event over Garth Widdison's 6.17/231. Earlier, Bruins had also set Top Speed at 237.37. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.02/236.84 qualified #5, and he soloed with a 6.24/226.70 when opponent Jeg Coughlin could not appear after crashing into the safety net while qualifying and breaking his wrist. A quick-leaving 6.12/240.00 in round two beat Walt Barbin's quicker 6.09/239, but in the semifinals, more bad luck kicked in in the way of a broken blower belt. This advanced Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car into the final. The team made it into the final at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Rob qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and in the opening round, he beat Dave Uyehara. A 6.06 (Low ET) in the semifinals beat Connie Kalitta's 6.15, but a broken blower belt again ended his chances against Brown in the final. Things went bad at the NHRA Summernationals, where the team failed to qualify. The following week, he ran at the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.94 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but low qualifier Dave Settles, driving the "Blue Max" dragster, beat him in the first round. He won the Divisional race at Brainerd with a 6.03/240.64 (Top Speed) over Widdison's quicker 5.97/238. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, Rob qualified #12 in the 32-car field with a 5.91/240.00. He beat Dwight Salisbury in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.13/236 stopped Shirley Muldowney. But his 6.07/240.00 wasn't enough in the third round to get past Johnny Abbott's 6.00/240. Problems arose at the NHRA Fallnationals. Bruins qualified #5 with a 5.92/237.46, but his clutch went away on the line in the first round, giving opponent Mike Palmer a solo run into round two. The season ended in Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.92/241.28 qualified #2 in the field. A first-round 6.12/235.60 beat Richard Tharp's off-pace run in John Kimble's car, and in round two, he downed Muldowney's 6.25/238 with a 6.18/234.37. Salisbury smoked the tires in the "Jet X" car in the semifinals, and Rob moved into the final round with a 6.04/236.22. In the final, he faced the "Old Man," Don Garlits. Their times had been similar during eliminations, but the track was tricky, and that had to give the edge to Garlits, who had years of experience with tricky tracks. It was close, but Garlits nipped Bruins with a 6.36/237 to the new world champ's 6.40/234.98. |

Notes: Photo from 1979 US Nationals. Rob qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.92/243.90. He lost to low qualifier Connie Kalitta in the first round, when he fouled. He qualified #2 at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race with a 5.88/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Noel Reese. He did much better at the second Division 6 race at Seattle on May 4. He beat Wayne Warner and Ernie Hall with times of 5.97 and 6.07 at 241.93 to advance to the final. In the final, he faced Jerry Ruth. Jerry ran 6.08 in the final, but he lost to Rob's 5.98/242.58 (Top Speed). |

At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, he qualified #3 with an 8.35/165.44. In the semifinals, he advanced to the finals when Ronnie Sox fouled. In the final, he faced Hill. Both ran 8.35, Hill at 166 and John at 165.44. Hill got the victory. John was also in the final at Bristol on June 19 for the IHRA Springnationals. He was driving a Camaro and he qualified it #3 with an 8.50. In the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.68, but in the final, he broke and slowed to a 29.66/32 that lost to Pat Musi. John grabbed a big win at Union Grove on July 4 for the IHRA Summernationals. He was driving his Monza here. A first-round 8.58/150.75 beat Joe Gouger's 8.83 and in the semifinals, his 8.55/161.57 advanced when Musi fouled away an 8.63/161. In the final, he ran Sox. Ronnie broke and Brumley cruised to an 8.54/160.71 for the title. He was still in the Monza on July 24 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with an 8.42, forcing him to run low qualifier Musi in the first round. He lost that race when his Monza’s ailing 9.05 fell to Musi's 8.46. John got into another IHRA final on August 7 for the Nationals. He qualified #3 and beat Garry Grimes in the first round, with an 8.59. In round two, an 8.60 beat Sam Carroll and in the semifinal, Musi fouled away an 8.41/144 against him. John still ran an 8.52/160.14 to advance into the final. Notes: John Brumley qualified seventh at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.888/174.08, and in the first round, his 8.04/171.42 beat Sonny Bryant's 8.13/171, but he didn't show for the second round when he left for another race in Florida. That race he went to was at Palm Beach, at Moroso Motorsports Park. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.91/173.07 qualified #1 in a field that included Warren Johnson. In the opening round, his 7.90/174.08 advanced when Harry Del Prete fouled. In the semifinal, a 7.91/173.41 defeated Joe Anderson's 8.25/165. He faced Wayne Ellison in the final, and a good light coupled with a 7.92/173.41 held off Wayne's better 7.89/168. Speaking of Florida, at the Gatornationals, he qualified thirteenth with a 7.832/175.78 but his 7.92/174.08 lost to Joe Lepone's 7.72/176 in round one. He failed to qualify at the eight-car show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where a 7.94/175.78 was the third alternate. At the NHRA Springnationals in June, John qualified on the bump with a 7.99/171.42 but lost to Butch Leal's 7.93/173 in round one, with an 8.05. A 7.94/176.47 failed to get him into the show at the US Nationals. |
