Notes: Trying to pick a top ten list of Top Fuel cars for '73 was a tough task. Lots of different drivers stepped up. Sure, you would have to have Don Garlits and James Warren on the list, but then who? The Donovan-powered cars of John Wiebe, Herm Petersen, Carl Olson, Pat Dakin, and Flip Schofield all ran great. Marvin Schwartz picked up, as did Tommy Ivo, and Clayton Harris and Don Moody continued to impress. But all those dragsters used a Chrysler Hemi or an aftermarket aluminum version in the Donovan's case. Jim Bucher stood out from the crowd using an aluminum 470 cubic inch Chevy "Rat" motor. He made it work and should be considered for the list. Jim was able to build the engine for far less than it would have cost to build a Hemi. The car was also light, weighing in at some 200 lbs. less than the lightest Hemi-powered cars. You would have to start at Beeline to review his season, where he ran 6.25 to qualify #6 for the AHRA Winternationals. He failed to reach the finals but was by far the quickest Chevy there. In March, he was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.76. An off-pace 7.20/199.11 lost in the opening round. He was not at Bakersfield. But he sure opened everyone's eyes at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bucher qualified #5 with a 6.179/227.27. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.120/224.43 to beat Randy Allison's 6.70/161. Jim then set a new NHRA ET record in round two, where his 6.079 at 236.22 beat Olson's 6.15/227. An easy pass of 10.77 advanced in the semifinals when Steve Carbone lost fire. This put Jim into the final against Petersen. Unfortunately, the Chevy broke, and Herm soloed for the victory. Jim did win the NHRA Division 3 WCS race in Indy in late April. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final at 6.23/230.76. Jim then traveled to OCIR on May 12 for the Constructor's Championships, where he qualified #15 in the 32-car field with a 6.66. He got to solo in round one when Dominic Cardoza lost fire. Jim took an easy 9.23/92.49 pass to advance. He also soloed in round two when Carl Olson's car failed to fire. His first race came in the third round, where he shut off with problems, while his opponent, eventual winner Don Moody, was losing a clutch on a 7.25/153 run. On June 2, Bucher was at the Edgewater National Open. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Walther. The two had a great race, with Walther's 6.56/218 edging out Jim's 6.56/217.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, Bucher's 6.461/227.84 qualified #11. An off-pace 6.640/220.58 in the first round, lost to Wiebe's 6.48/220. He ran better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 6.203/223 qualified #7. A 6.52/221 beat Jon Hansen's 6.60/217 in round one, while a second round 6.32/217 advanced when Dakin fouled away a 6.30/223. In the semifinals, Vic Brown broke against him, and Bucher moved into the final with a 6.32/219.51. He faced Harris, who got into the show as an alternate and had not run better than 7.30 in eliminations. The Chevy lovers in the stands were licking their chops, feeling that they would witness a Chevy winning in TF. Things didn't work out that way, as the car died once again, and Jim could only watch as Harris' car coughed and sputtered to an 8.72/149 for the win. Jim destroyed the car at Union Grove when it went into a wheelstand and flipped over, landing hard. Jim was OK, but the car was badly damaged. He returned in August to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He set Low ET in qualifying for the sixteen-car field with a 6.12. Jim opened eliminations with a 6.27/184 over a wheelstanding Paul Longenecker, and a 6.35/220.04 beat Wiebe's ailing Donovan car at 6.93/137. But a 6.41/207.85 in the semifinal lost to Dakin's 6.32/206. His next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA National Challenge race. Of course, he had the only Chevy to qualify in the 32-car show, and his 6.30/218.14 got him into the top half of the show (#10). Jim was the number one qualifier at Indy with a 6.091/226.70 effort, leading an incredible field of about 75 entries! Unfortunately for Jim and Chevy fans, Randy Allison stepped up from his #17 qualifying position to upset Bucher in round one, 6.063/229.00 to a consistent but losing 6.099/229.59. Jim ran at the Gainesville WWCS meet in September, where he hit 223.88. He qualified #13 with a 6.68 in high altitude Amarillo, Texas, for the NHRA World Finals. Carl Olson took a first-round win, 6.304/227.27 to 6.396/225.00. At the Ontario Supernationals, Jim qualified #11 at 6.134/233.16. But first-round blues struck again when Dan Richins took a super close 6.070/213.76 win over Jim's booming 6.090/241.28. Jim didn't usually run it out the back door, but he topped 240 on his last pass of the NHRA season. All in all, it was a great year for Bucher and his Ohio Rat, and he won a ton of new fans across the country and globe. | The listed 6.03 did not occur in NHRA national event competition. But we remember it, and it is also cited in a 1996 Chevy Engines book (crediting Jim as the quickest ZL-1 at 6.03). Where did that run occur? |

Notes: Jim was a Chevy supporter until the end. After Top Gas ended as a class, he went hard to make a Chevy Rat motor competitive in T/F. Many other Chevy teams owed a lot to Bucher as he paved the way for them. He started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the bump with a 6.171/231.95. His was the only Chevy-powered car to qualify. Unfortunately, the engine died on the line against John Wiebe in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals (times not reported). Jim qualified #1 for the eight-car field at Charlotte Speedway for the 1/8 Mile IHRA Southern Nationals with a 4.39/176.12 (Top Speed). An opening round 4.18/175.09 was good enough for Low ET while beating Bob Pennington. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Dale Funk. In April, the NHRA Division 3 Opener was held at Indianapolis, and Jim qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.48. Pat Dakin fouled against him in round one, and Bucher advanced into the semifinals, where he smoked the tires and lost to Billy Campbell. Early in May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car show, and his 6.28/228.42 got him the #2 spot in the field. In round one, he improved slightly with a 6.27/220.58 to take out Dale Thierer's 6.49/211, but he broke on the run and could not return for the semifinals. He traveled to Canada the following week (May 19) for the second NHRA Division 1 race. He made the show, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Gary Beck. As usual, he was the only Chevy to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.250/229.00 qualified #7. Bob Struksnes shut off in the opening round against him. Hee dodged a bulletin round two when his 6.466/225.00 got around Dave Settles' 6.509/230.76 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. His run ended in the semifinals, where Carl Olson's 6.18/228 beat his 6.36/208.33. Jim's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Thirty-five cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Bucher's Chevy got the #15 spot. A first-round 6.50/220.04 beat Don Souter's 6.70/215, but he smoked the tires and shut off against Jim Murphy in round two. He was runner-up to Wiebe at a Top Fuel show at Martin, Michigan. Two Chevy-powered entries made the field at the NHRA Summernationals, and surprisingly, Bucher was not the quickest of the two. That honor fell to Don Powell (#9). Jim's 6.489/230.17 qualified #15. Both went down in the first round. Bucher had problems and slowed to 7.28/172.74 in a loss to Herm Petersen's 6.34/225. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where, once again, he was the only bow-tie campaigner to qualify. His 6.351/230.76 got him the #7 spot in the show. He beat Flip Schofield's 6.42/218 in the first round, with a 6.325/230.17 and a round two 6.53/200.44 advanced when Dakin lost an engine. But once again, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut down to a 10.87 loss to Beck's 6.28. Things looked really good at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where 39 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Jim showed his strength as a 6.16 qualified #5. It was interesting to note that he out-qualified all the Donovan-powered cars. In round one, the rear end in the car let him down as it broke on the line, advancing Ron Correnti. His next stop was at New York National for the ill-fated PRO race in August. His 6.24/221.66 qualified #10 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he improved to 6.11/227.27 to beat John Austin, whose 'chute released early. A second-round 6.05/233 beat Souter's 6.40/207, and a third-round 6.09/229.00 beat Ted Wolf in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. The race was run poorly, and in round four (yes, round four, not the semifinals), he faced Wolf again. This time, Bucher had problems and shut down early. He was at Maple Grove for its All-American Pro Series race shortly after. This was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, his 6.22/221.13 advanced when Wolf lost fire. In round two, he fouled away a 6.39/208.81 against Sarge Arciero in the "Jade Grenade." At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Jim qualified #13 with a 6.171/230.76, but an even better 6.164/232.55 in the opening round fell to Dwight Salisbury's incredible holeshot and a 6.270/215.31. Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Jim Bucher still had one of the strongest Chevy-powered Top Fuel cars running in '75 and he scored the first NHRA Top Fuel win for a Chevrolet this year. The season didn't start the greatest as he failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and he also failed to make the eight-car field at the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood. He skipped the Bakersfield March Meet, but did attempt to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals where once again he failed to make the show. It should be noted that at all the events at which he failed to qualify, no other Chevy powered cars made the field. But by April, Bucher was getting back on track. At the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, his 6.20 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.12/224.43 beat Pete Miner and another 6.20/207 in the semifinals beat John Austin in the "Hot Tuna" car. He faced Dale Funk in the final, and unfortunately, he got crossed up and shut off to a 10.30 in a runner-up effort to Funk's track record 5.99 blast. He then went to Cecil County's National Open where he qualified for the eight-car show, but had problems in the first round, and shut down early against Ted Wolf who was driving the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. Everything clicked at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.35 and he went on to win, stopping Bill Pryor in the final with a 6.23/230.76 (Low ET and Top Speed). Bucher then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 race and while he didn't reach the finals, he did set Low ET at 6.21. You had to give Bucher a lot of credit. A lot of the teams that ran Chevys in Top Fuel ran "lesser" shows - races that had less competition and where they were more likely to qualify. Jim, on the other hand, went straight for the races that were heavy with "name" drivers. He didn't care who was in the opposite lane. Case in point, on May 4 he was at National Trail for the NHRA Division 3 race. Sixteen cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Bucher's Chevy out-qualified quite a few Hemis to make the show. He then proceeded to put them on the trailer. An opening round 6.34/204.54 beat Pat Dakin and in the semifinals, he stopped low qualifier Dick Rosberg with a 6.28/216.34. Things looked good for him in the final as opponent Bill Pryor was a tenth back with a 6.38 semifinal run. But the Chevy still had problems and in the final, a broken oil pump let Pryor solo for the win with a 6.35. The second NHRA Division 1 race was run in Canada at Cayuga Raceway in Ontario. Bucher ran 6.45/214.79 in the first round, to beat Tony Ceraolo's 6.68/206, but a semifinal 6.68/181.08 lost to Larry Bucher (no relation) at 6.48/194. The national event showing were still not great as he failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. Best NHRA national event times were 5.911 at the World Finals and 229.59 at Seattle. |

Notes: Jim Bucher's last dragster, which resides in Don Garlits' museum. Qualified #10 at Gainesville at 6.162/219.51. Won a first-round match over Richard Tharp, 6.50/181 to an off pace 9.14. Clayton Harris did not show for round two, but Jim logged a strong 6.180/225.56 for the win. Jim then took out Marvin Graham, 6.40/222 to 6.66/158, to meet James Warren in the final. Warren took the measure of the Chevy, however, 6.24/236 to 6.45/227. Jim entered the NHRA Springnationals, but did not qualify (times not reported).
