Notes: Mike Burkhart's first funny car was this steel Chevy II match basher. Burkhart was a terror with his Super Stock '57 Chevrolet Bel Air in the Dallas area. In 1965, Mike built the steel Chevrolet with big block injected Chevy power. Friendly Chevrolet sponsored the stretched wheelbased car. Burkhart won many match races with the strangely painted Chevy II (it was red on one side and blue on the other). Mike was a regular in Texas match races with the Chevy II in 1966, but retired the car at the end of the season to build a Camaro for 1967. |

Notes: Harry Schmidt and Mike Burkhart had run a Nova in '66, but for '67 they teamed up on this Camaro that they built in just three weeks. The cost was kept down to just $2,700 as they had a lot of parts on hand. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. and sat on a 120" chassis. An injected 427 Chevy powered the car that used M/T rods and 12:1 Venolia pistons. A roller cam from Crower was installed. Heads were done by Mondello. The 90% nitro was fed to the engine by Hilborn injection. The rest of the drivetrain was from Mopar, from the push-button TorqueFlite transmission back to the Plymouth rear end with 3.90 gears. Total weight was only 1,750 lbs. The car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals where Mike ran a best of 9.50 on 50% nitro. - RH |

Notes: Mike debuted the Camaro at Oklahoma City Raceway in April. He was supposed to run against John Wiebe's Top Fuel car with a one-second handicap, but the cars were only allowed solo passes due to high winds. Burkhart ran a best of 8.37/184.00. Mike was at Green Valley Raceway in June for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in the first round of the competition when Al Vanderwoude failed to fire, and in the semifinals, his 8.05/166.66 advanced when Charlie Therwhanger fouled. The final was supposed to be between him and Gene Snow, but rain canceled it. He was back at Green Valley on August 7 for an eight-car show. Mike set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where he ran 7.89/189.92 to beat the "Bear-A-Cuda." But in the semifinal, the Camaro got out of shape, and Burkhart shut off against eventual winner Ronnie Runyan. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the AHRA All-American Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.86/175 defeated Bob Fulp's 8.36/175 in the "Limefire." He was late off the line in the second round, and his 8.06/180.36 lost to Runyan's 8.25/169. Confirmed 7.86 at 180.36 at 1968 Bristol All American Funny Car Championships and 7.81 Irwindale. Had real doors. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. |

Notes: Burkhart's new '69 Camaro built by Don Hardy used a 118" wheelbase chassis. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used a stock displacement 427 Chevy with Mondello heads. He used Howards for the cam as well as the rods and pistons. An Enderle injection unit sat on top of a Larry Bowers-built blower. Claimed hp was 1,200. Mike qualified second with a 7.69 at the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost in the first round to Clare Sanders. On July 19, Burkhart was at St. Louis for its 1/8 Mile Championships. He lasted until round two before his 5.28 lost to eventual winner Arnie Behling's 5.10 in Ed Shartman's Cougar. The following week (July 26), he was in Dallas for an eight-car show. Mike had a close opening round race against Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar." The Camaro's 7.80/185.56 nipped the Cougar's 7.84/186. Gene Snow got crossed-up against him in the semifinal and shut off while Burkhart advanced with a 7.69/190.00. He faced Leonard Hughes in the final, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was running about two-tenths better at this race. Sure enough, Hughes ran his slowest time of the race, a 7.67/207, which was more than enough to defeat Burkhart. The next day, he was at Corpus Christi for a best of three march race against Leslie. In the first race, the Cougar's 7.99/181 won. But while doing his burnout for their second race, Leslie broke and could not run after that. Mike ran two solo passes for the match race victory with best times of 8.30/153.84. Mike went to St. Louis on August 10 for AHRA's fourth Grand American race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 7.76/187. In round one, his 7.79 lost to Curtis Wasson's quick-leaving 7.92. But Wasson had burned a piston and could not return for the semifinal. So Burkhart got back into the show on the "break rule." He didn't stick around long as he fouled against Ronnie Runyan. At the AHRA All-American at Bristol, a sixteen-car show was staged during qualifying on September 6. Mike lost a transmission in the first round but repaired it for the actual show the next day. He won his first-round race with a 7.87 that advanced over Clyde Morgan, who lost a trans in his Javelin. Jim Maybeck set Low ET of the meet in the second round with a 7.32 that put Mike's Camaro on the trailer. The following week (September 13), he raced at Nashville's King of the Funnies meet. He went 7.80 in the first round over Ronnie Hunter, and he beat Frank Oglesby's Cougar in the semis. But a final round 7.92 gave him the runner-up spot as Ronnie Runyan's 7.83/183 bested him. It was on to Dallas for an eight-car show on September 20. Mike ran a first-round 7.87 that beat John Dekker's quicker 7.85. He lost fire on the line in the semifinal against Cogo Eads. Mike faced off against Leonard Hughes at Southland Dragway on September 28. The Candies and Hughes car had been turning in some big numbers, so it was a tough race. Hughes had his linkage break in the first race, giving Burkhart a solo 8.44/169.19 for the win. In the second race, his 8.13/172.08 lost to Hughes' 7.56/189. The last race saw Hughes hook up to a 7.46/184 for the match race win over Mike's 8.23/171.76. Also 7.76 low qualifier at 1969 AHRA Grand American at St. Louis. Set a 7.51 Pittsburgh track record. He ran 7.52 at LaPlace. |

Notes: For sale ad claimed the car was guaranteed to run 7.40 at 195. Confirmed 7.50 at Tri-City 1970. | After having a great season in '69, Burkhart found the going a lot more tough in '70. The big Chevy "Rat" motors were having a real hard time keeping up with the Chrysler Hemi powered cars. They weren't just off a tenth, they were now almost off the Hemis’ pace by almost a half second. Just qualifying with a Chevy in nitro Funny Car was something to be proud of. Mike did not run well and failed to qualify at the Winter meets. He did better on March 15 at Dallas for its season opener. Ten FCs ran and all ran three races. Burkhart beat Bernie Williams in his first race. The two ran again in round two with the same outcome: Mike ran 8.03 over Bernie's 8.25. He made it three straight with a 7.91/184.80 over the Mustang's 7.95. He and Kelly Chadwick were considered the co-winners as both had won all three of their races. He also ran well at Miami-Hollywood later in the month for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.62/187.58 beat Ronnie Hunter's 7.90/190 and in the semifinals, he stopped Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" with a 7.78/193.29 to the Duster's 7.89/195. This was an unusual final, as it featured two Chevy powered cars. That was rare in '70 with all the strong Mopars. He faced Clare Sanders driving the "Super Camaro" and his 7.82/190.00 finished runner-up to Clare's 7.65/192. Also ran 6.22 at Southeastern Dragway Dallas, GA (900 feet). |

Notes: This is the fourth car the Burkholder Bros. built. It was originally run in the AA/A class on Gas. Then we changed to Fuel during the AA/FA match race days. 15% nitro was all we could pass through the gas injector system, but still eventually ran 200 mph. Car was based on owner Harry Burkholder built chassis with the Old's engine from their previous AA/A. The body by brother Pete was a one-off 23 T touring. Was ranked as the world's fastest Olds powered car. |

Notes: This was the fourth altered built by the Burkholders. The chassis was 1.5" chrome moly by owner Harry. The body was a '23 T touring one off, created by combining front 2/3rds and rear 2/3rds of a '23 T roadster. Paint by Pete. This was when they were still running the Oldsmobile engine in 1968. Changed to Chrysler Hemi in 1969. |
