Notes: Don did not compete at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Gainesville for NHRA's second race of the season, the Gatornationals. His 7.778/176.47 qualified #8. He beat alternate Jeff Velde in the opening round with a better 7.753, but in round two, he lost to Frank Iaconio. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Campanello ran 7.88/175.43 to qualify #6. in the opening round, he lost to Dave Hutchens. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 7.80/177.16. Unfortunately, he was upset by Rickie Smith in round one. Don was at Brainerd later in the month for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.90/178.92. in the opening round, he defeated alternate, Jim Elhen but he lost to Iaconio in round two. He went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 7.82/180.36 qualified #6. But he slowed to 7.90/176.47 in the first round, that fell to Roy Hill's quick-leaving 7.91/175.

Notes: Campanello qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.741/180.36. His 7.80/178.92 beat a fouling Brad Yuill in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, Don fouled in the second round with a 7.82, losing to the eventual winner Warren Johnson's 7.67. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. A 7.80/177.86 qualified #6, and in round one, a 7.82 beat "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.93. He then beat Ronnie Manchester and Ken Dondero in Bob Panella's Camaro to reach the final against Lee Shepherd. His should have been Campanello's race to win, but a late leaving 7.74/179.28 finished runner-up to Lee's 7.78/177. He qualified #13 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he fouled away a 7.83 against Butch Leal's 7.79 in the opening round. Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 7.82 qualified #9. He lasted until round two before fouling against Bob Glidden. Don ran really well at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.79/178.92. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Johnson. The two had a burn-down on the line with neither driver wanting to stage first. Warren finally staged, and Don followed, and the lite went green. Campanello timed it perfectly, and his 7.84 won while Johnson fouled away a 7.69. He went on to beat Frank Iaconio's 7.88 in the semifinals with a 7.82. This put him into the final against Dondero. Don tried hard, but his 7.80/174.08 finished runner-up to Dondero's 7.75/177. He failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Don also ran 7.79 at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove. His Englishtown and Baton Rouge numbers were his NHRA national event bests for the year. He had a few good runner-up finishes, too.

Notes: National Dragster cites 83 Camaro at NHRA Maple Grove. We need to confirm. | Don qualified #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 7.75/178.64. A 7.84/176.67 in the first round, lost to Ken Dondero's 7.67/180. At the Gatornationals, a 7.73/178.42 qualified #9, forcing him to run low qualifier Bob Glidden in the first round. Don lost that one when he broke on the line. The next event was the Southern Nationals held in Atlanta. He qualified #7 with a 7.77/179.49. In the first round, his 7.80/177.72 beat Joe Lepone and a second-round 7.82/176.70 beat Bruce Allen. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.79 against Glidden. Don continued to improve. At the Cajun Nationals, he again qualified #7, but this time he ran a 7.70/178.07 to do it. He failed to make the final round, however. The Springnationals was the next event on the NHRA tour, and a 7.73/178.57 qualified #10. He lost to Allen's 7.66/175 in round one, with a 7.80/178.21. He was in Canada for the Grandnationals, where a 7.64/181.37 qualified #11. A first-round 7.68/180.14 beat Frank Iaconio's 7.71/178, and in round two, his 7.69/176.47 advanced when Dempsey Hardy fouled. In the semifinals, Don's 7.74/178.64 lost to eventual winner Allen's 7.58/183. The times kept getting lower for Campanello and at the Summernationals, a 7.63/179 qualified #7.

Notes: Winner of Gatornationals in 1986. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Campanello did not run at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals. Still, he was at Gainesville, where he raised some eyebrows by winning the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran a career-best 7.508 at 182.40 to qualify #2 behind Bob Glidden's 7.49/186. Interestingly, while winning this race, he used up two Oldsmobile engines, and he ran a Chevy engine in the final. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.58/183.29 beat Joe Lepone. A second-round 7.63/180.07 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled and, in the semifinal, his 7.69/177.23 beat Gordie Rivera's 7.74/165. He faced Butch Leal in the final, and things didn't look too good for Campanello as Leal's worst time in eliminations had been 7.56. But Leal fouled away a final round 7.54/183, and Don picked up the victory with an 8.13/132.70. But he went from hero to zero at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the sixth alternate with a 7.70/180.00 best. He also failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he was the first alternate at 7.71/178.39. Things went a little better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" with a 7.71/175.02. Unfortunately, his first-round 7.84/176.47 lost to Eckman's 7.70/178. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but once again, he was the first alternate with a 7.69/172.61 best. Campanello got back into the 7.5s at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. But he needed to as his 7.59/182.11 qualified on the "bump.” He lost early in eliminations. Don hit the 7.5s at a few other events, but mostly stayed in the 7.60s and 7.70s for the rest of the tour. His Gainesville 7.508 was his quickest NHRA national event time of the year, although he did run a booming 185.91 at Indy.

Notes: Don attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his best of 7.61/185.10 was good for the fifteenth alternate. He was the fifth alternate at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 7.61/181.19 best. His bad luck continued at the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he was the eighth alternate with a best of 7.74/179.74. He bucked the trend at the NHRA Springnationals where he qualified #9 with a 7.58/182.40. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Bob Glidden. Don gave it a shot, but his 7.69/182.14 was no match for Glidden's 7.50/184. Don ran 7.595/184.08 at NHRA Grandnational Molson.

Notes: Campanello was the sixth alternate at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.43/185.52. He also failed to qualify at Memphis, where he was the thirteenth alternate at 7.58/183.33. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Campanello's 7.45/184.69 qualified #13. In round one, he defeated Harry Scribner before fouling against Mark Pawuk in round two. Shortly after that (July 10, he stopped off at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He ran 7.60/180.79 in qualifying, but his 7.76/174.75 in the opening round lost to Warren Johnson's 7.51/186. He failed to qualify the following week at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Don was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, where his 7.458/185.07 qualified #12. He beat Johnson in the first round, and in round two, his 7.522/183 beat Reid Whisnant. But he lost to eventual winner Harry Scribner in the semifinal. He then went to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, where he qualified #15 with a 7.54/182.85 but lost early in eliminations. Don ran his best 1988 NHRA times with a 7.404/186.14 DNQ at NHRA Houston Fall. Campanello qualified number four at IHRA Atco with a 7.364 184.13 fouling with an 8.119/181.45 in the first round, to Kenny Korestky's 7.364.

Notes: Campanello attempted to qualify at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but his best of 7.57/179.96 (tenth alternate) failed to qualify. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, he ended up as the seventeenth alternate with a best of 7.474/183.44. The next event on the NHRA tour was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Notes: 1974 Popular Hot Rodding Magazine Championships Top Fuel winner. Ran 6.12/228.42 to win the race. Ran 6.12 at Indy and 6.38 at Gainesville. This team had a really great season in '74. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Billy qualified #10, but a first-round 6.42 lost to eventual winner Dave Settles' 6.29 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Another first-round loss came at the IHRA Southern Nationals where he lost to Dale Funk who would also go on to win. Things went better at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. There Campbell qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.13 (Low ET) at 222.77. An opening round 6.18/222.22 took out Dick LaHaie's 6.40/223. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked the tires with his Chevy powered car and Billy's 6.18/218.97 advanced into the final. Unfortunately, the dragster broke and Paul Longenecker eased to the victory with an 8.91. It was a heartbreaker for the team as they were running a tenth better than Longenecker. The next stop for the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. An easy 6.95/213.77 qualified #5 in the eight-car field and once again Billy found himself in the final. Also, once again the car let him down as it lost fire giving final round opponent, Jim Hundley a solo for the win. Things didn't go very well at Columbus where the team failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. And at the IHRA Springnationals, they qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field, but Campbell was caught napping in the first round, where his 6.34/225.56 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.40/204. He had another runner-up finish at the NHRA 1/8 mile drags at Kentucky where a final round 4.39 finished second to Dale Funk's 4.18. A win finally came on July 28 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City. There Campbell set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.05 (track record) at 237.46. A final round 6.06 beat Dick Rosberg. It was then off to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Campbell qualified #3 with a 6.50, but he picked up considerably in the first round, where his 6.24/225.01 dropped Don Souter's 6.50/229 from the program. A semifinal 6.43 beat a tire smoking Funk and put him into the final against Bill Pryor. The two had a good race, but Pryor's 6.30/225 got the victory over Campbell's 6.46/193.14. Then came the big win over a sixteen-car field at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The team only qualified #8 with a 6.27, but that was pretty good considering that there were 39 cars attempting to make the show. He picked up to 6.21 in the opening round to drop Chuck Kurzawa and a second round 6.30 advanced when Don Garlits had his transmission break just off the line. In the semifinals, the team stepped it up some more running 6.11/236.22 to eliminate Jeb Allen's 6.22/230. In the final, Campbell faced Settles and another strong run of 6.12/228.42 got the job done over Dave's 6.29/221. New York National was the next stop for the PRO National Challenge race. Campbell’s 6.25/225.00 qualified #11, but a sleepy 6.35227.82 lost to Gary Ritter’s 6.41/227 in the first round. The team was probably lucky to lose early before the race fell to pieces. Bowling Green held a Pre-Nationals warm-up race and the "Golddigger" was there. A 6.35/218.97 qualified #2 in the eight-car field and he beat John Hilton and John McNew (with a 6.42) to reach the final. In the final he smoked the tires and lost to Ritter's 6.21/230.

Notes: We need to confirm that Billy was still driving in 1975 and that Austin Myers did not take over until that year. Original times of 6.05/237.46 were listed for Billy in Jack Hart's car in 1976, but do not think either of them raced that year (Thornberry and Seigle had taken over the enterprise).
