Notes: Darrell won the Memorial Day Pro Stock race at Thunder Valley. He had run track records of 7.66/181.08 in time trials. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.72/179.28. A first-round 7.75/179.28 beat Jim Feurer and a 7.81 in the semifinals beat Ed Machacek. This put him into the final against Bill Kuhlmann. The two had a good race, with Darrell's 7.78/179.28 getting the victory over Kuhlmann's 7.89/176. |

Notes: Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Darrell's first NHRA national event of '86 was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.57/182.37. A first-round 7.61/181.19 beat Tony Christian's 7.68/181. In the second round, the Camaro broke, giving Bob Glidden a solo into the semifinals. The next race was the NHRA Fallnationals, and once again, Alderman qualified well, running a 7.62/181.21 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Lee Dean's 7.70/175 in the first round, with a 7.65/179.96. In round two, another 7.65 at 180.25 beat Warren Johnson's 7.87/180. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 7.63 in the semifinals against Dempsey Hardy. At the season ending NHRA World Finals, a 7.57/182.00 qualified #7. He beat Frank Iaconio's T-Bird in the first round, with a 7.60/180.83. In round two, Bruce Allen sent him packing with a 7.56/183 that nosed out Darrell's 7.58/180. Those were the only three NHRA races that Alderman ran in '86. Even with those limited runs, he managed to finish 22 in NHRA's points chase. Darrell ran all kinds of 7.40's on the IHRA circuit this year in the Jerry Haas Camaro, but none in NHRA trim. |

Notes: Darrell started the '86 IHRA season by qualifying #3 at Darlington for the Winternationals with a 7.37. He improved to a 7.32/191.48 in the first round, to beat Jim Ruth while a 7.34/190 in round two beat Dean Goforth. He got even quicker in the semifinals, running 7.28/191 to drop Rickie Smith's Mustang at 7.40/188. This set up an all Camaro final against Billy Ewing that Darrell won. |

Notes: Darrell qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53/182.88. In the first round, his 7.52/179.03 beat Lee Dean's 7.55/183. He lost to Larry Morgan in round two. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.49/186.06 qualified #7. In round one, his 7.53/185.14 beat Kenny Delco and in round two, his 7.59/180 stopped Joe Lepone Jr. who ran a quicker 7.58/180. Darrell got out of shape in the semifinals and shut off, losing to Bob Glidden. Alderman did not race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race, but he attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was the first alternate with a best of 7.58/182.59. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Darrell qualified #13 with a 7.64/182.51. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain and Darrell was unable to return for the rain date as he had plans to race his mountain motored car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.64/177.72. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.68 against Gary Brown who advanced with a 7.66. Alderman did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 7.57/182.68 qualified #12. But in the first round, his 7.63/181.67 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.56/183. He skipped over the NHRA Mile High Nationals at Denver, but returned to the tour at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified in the top half (#5) of the field with a 7.60/182.11. Darrell improved to 7.58/182.33 in the first round, to beat Reid Whisnant's 7.85/146, but he came up against Glidden in round two and Bob's T-Bird was flying, running 7.4s at will. Sure enough, Bob pounded out a 7.47/185 to send Alderman back to the trailer with a 7.61/181.92. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was crazy, with 52 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Darrell ran 7.48/189.19 to qualify #2 behind Glidden's 7.42. In round one, a 7.56 narrowly beat Tony Christian's 7.57. A quick-leaving 7.59/188.00 in round two beat Kenny Delco's quicker 7.57/182 and he showed his driving skill in the semifinal, where he left on Warren Johnson and hung on to win with his 7.59/188.16 beating WJ's 7.53/189. He faced that pesky T-Bird in the final, and despite running his best time of eliminations, a 7.52/189.15, he lost to Glidden's 7.43/188. Photo from Indy 87, where the team was runner-up. |

Notes: Darrell attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Despite running a record 7.474/187.46 for Mopar doorslammers, he was nowhere close to making the show, even if it had been a 32-car field. Darrell also ran the following NHRA events with the following best times: Atlanta, 7.603/183.44, Memphis, 7.540/185.98, Baton Rouge, 7.522/185.72, Columbus, 7.562/184.19, Englishtown, 7.565/184.76, Brainerd, 7.598/182.96, Indy, 197.550/183.74, Reading, 7.448/186.76, Baytown, 7.358/187.22 (#13 qualifier and first-round loss to Bruce Allen, 7.47/185 to 8.43/120), Phoenix, 7.547/184.09, and Pomona Finals, 7.492/184.76. All were DNQ efforts except for Houston, but the team was getting closer to qualifying by the end of the year. Darrell did qualify for the Pomona Winters, but that was in the team's Camaro. |

Notes: It had been ten years since a Mopar had won in Pro Stock. Not since Bob Glidden had won the season-ending World Finals in his Arrow in '79. The Dodge Division hadn't won since 1971 when Mike Fons won the World Finals in a Challenger. So it was good to see a Dodge back in competition in NHRA Pro Stock racing with this Alderman-driven Daytona. The season didn't start so well when the team failed to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but things got much better at the Supernationals at Houston where Darrell ran a 7.34 to qualify #7. He improved to a 7.31 in the first round, that beat Don Coonce, but in round two he fouled against Morris Johnson Jr. Alderman got his first ever NHRA win at the next event, the Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.34/187.51. He beat Kenny Delco and Reid Whisnant in the first two rounds before coming up against Glidden in the semifinals. In that race, both cars recorded 7.38's, but the Dodge got the win putting him in the final against Frank Iaconio. Darrell used a slight holeshot to take his win with a 7.39/186.25 beating Frank's 7.38/186. At the fourth event of the season, the Southern Nationals, a 7.41/185.98 qualified #8. He beat Mark Pawuk in the first round, but a 7.49/184.69 lost to Bruce Allen's 7.42/185 in round two. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, Alderman ran 7.38/187.65 to qualify #11. A first-round 7.40 beat Whisnant and a 7.38/187 beat Don Beverley in round two. Unfortunately, he lost to Glidden in the semifinal. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 7.45/184.91 qualified #7, but he was upset in the first round, by Joe Folgore. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on May 21. Alderman qualified well and he beat Jerry Haas in the first round, with a 7.50/183.22. In round two, he beat Mark Pawuk with a 7.53/182.91 and a semifinal 7.54/182.16 beat low qualifier Larry Morgan's quicker 7.49/184. In the final, he met Warren Johnson. Alderman ran a 7.56/181.32 that finished runner up to WJ's 7.50/184. The NHRA Springnationals wasn't a good race for the teams as Alderman's best of 7.45/183.71 failed to qualify (first alternate). Things went better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada where a 7.44/185.07 qualified #11. A first-round 7.43/184.64 beat WJ's right there 7.43/184. In the second round, a 7.49/184.12 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.48/183. Darrell when to Milan International in Michigan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2. He ran well, beating Larry Morgan's Oldsmobile in round two before losing to Smith in the semifinal. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.38/187.57 and lasted until the second round before losing to Ken Koretsky. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver in July. A 7.87/174.99 qualified #7 in the all seven second field. He beat Coonce in the first round, but in round two, Bruce Allen out drove him running a 7.87/175 to win over Alderman's quicker 7.85/175. At Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, Darrell qualified #6 with a 7.36/187.30. A first-round 7.39/186.72 beat Gary Herman, but once again he lost in the second round when his 7.44/186.64 lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.45/185. Seattle International was NHRA's next stop for the Seafair Nationals. The Dodge ran a 7.38/187.38 to qualify in the dreaded #9 spot. He faced low qualifier Beverley in the first round, and both ran 7.39's with Darrell coming out on top. After losing in the second round to holeshots at the last two events, Alderman jumped the gun in round two and fouled away a 7.41 against Glidden who ran a 7.40/185 to win. | Photo from 1989 Gatornationals. |

Notes: Alderman started the season by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.32/188.95. He beat Butch Leal in the first round, with a 7.31/188.60 and a 7.32/187.93 beat Bob Glidden's 7.36/187 in round two. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Jerry Eckman's 7.30/188 with a 7.35/186.95. He had problems at the NHRA Arizona Nationals and only managed to qualify #14 with a 7.37/186.52. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. Houston was the next stop for the NHRA Supernationals. Alderman qualified #10 with a 7.30/187.57, and in the first round, he lost to Gordie Rivera. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 7.41/186.02 was the fourth alternate, and at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he was the first alternate at 7.34/187.93. But after those few hiccups, he qualified #1 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 7.25 (Low ET) at 189.27. He beat Jerry Haas in the opening round, and a 7.33/188 in round two stopped Joe Lepone's 7.35. In the semifinals, his 7.27/187 beat Glidden's 7.31, and he moved into the final against Larry Morgan. Larry also ran 7.27 in his semifinal race, so it was a close final between these two. It was close, but Morgan belted out another 7.27/189 to win over Alderman's 7.30/189.63. Darrell ran well again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 7.30/188.79 qualified #2. He beat future teammate Scott Geoffrion in round one and a 7.44 in round two advanced when Glidden broke. But in the semifinals, Morgan got him again. This time, Larry's 7.33 easily beat Darrell's 7.43. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Alderman qualified #8 with a 7.40/184.08. He beat Allen with a 7.45/183.18 (to Allen's 7.45/184!) and Morgan with a 7.46/184.35 in the first two rounds before losing to Rickie Smith's 7.46/184 in the semifinal despite a quicker 7.42/183. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 7.34 qualified #3, and in the opening round, he ran 7.35 over Rivera. Another 7.35/186 in round two dropped Morgan's 7.40, and he improved to 7.32 (Low ET and a track record) at 184.79 in the semifinal to beat Smith. In the final, he ran Jerry Eckman, and Eckman picked up to a 7.32/186 to win over Darrell's 7.35/186.64 runner-up effort. The next race on the NHRA calendar was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Alderman qualified #1 with a 7.27 (Low ET) at 189.71. An opening round 7.37/188.36 beat Joe Folgore's 7.45/184. Then he resorted to his quick reflexes to win the race. First, he ran 7.34/188.40 to beat Smith's quicker 7.31/187 in round two, and a 7.35/188.36 beat Glidden's quicker 7.31/188 in the semifinal. He continued this into the final, where his 7.32/187.89 picked up the victory over Mark Pawuk's 7.31/187. This was an impressive win. Things did not go as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 7.78/175.71. Another 7.78/175.16 beat Kenny Delco in round one, but he was late off the line in round two, and his 7.75/175.74 lost to "Tricky Rickie" Smith's 7.82/174. Still, after this race, he sat in the fourth position in points, behind Warren Johnson, Jerry Eckman, and Morgan. Extraordinary best times in qualifying #1 at Ennis at 7.184/190.88. Notes: This was Darrell Alderman's "dream season."He repeated as the NHRA Pro Stock points champion and was the points leader from February until the end of the season. He set a record of 59 round wins to win a record 11 times that season.Alderman qualified #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.22 (Low ET) and went on to win with a final 7.28/188.08 over a breaking Warren Johnson. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he again qualified #1 with a 7.21 (Low ET), then ran 7.36/187.38 over Mark Pawuk, a 7.33/188.32 over Rickie Smith, and a semifinal 7.31/189.27 over Tony Christian. Once again, he met WJ for the title, and once again, he won; a 7.31/188.71 beat WJ's 7.34/188. At the third stop on the NHRA tour, the Supernationals, he qualified #2 with a 7.25. He got Low ET in the first round, with a 7.19, and ran a second round 7.20/189.87. In the semifinal, a 7.21/190.03 beat Bruce Allen. He took his third win in the row when his 7.21/190.63 defeated Scott Geoffrion. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.18 (Low ET) and again made it to the final by running 7.32 in rounds one, and two and a 7.28/188.88 beat Bob Glidden's 7.29/189 in the semifinal. He was matched against WJ in the final again, but this time, WJ's 7.27/189 beat his 7.31/188.48. At Rockingham for the Winston Invitational in April, he qualified #1 with a 7.22/191.61 but failed to reach the final. He lost before the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Southern Nationals. Darrell did leave with a new track record 7.22 he set in qualifying #1. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, a 7.30 qualified #1, and he ran Low ET with a 7.29 during eliminations. In the final, it was Darrell and WJ again; once again, WJ prevailed with a 7.34/188 beating the Dodge's 7.43/185.26. Darrell got back into the winner's circle on June 9 at the NHRA Springnationals. A track record 7.29 at 189.19 qualified #1, and he and WJ worked their way to the final, where Darrell's 7.33/188.36 nipped WJ at 7.33/188. Later in June, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #13 with a 7.29 but still managed to work his way to the final, where he met Glidden. Alderman set Low ET with a 7.20/190.07, and he needed every bit of it as Glidden was right there with a 7.21/191. Darrell then won the Pro Stock Challenge race at Englishtown. He beat Pawuk in the first round, with a 7.27/189.23 and a 7.29/188.56 advanced in the semifinals when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the final, a 7.28/189.91 beat Allen's 7.30/189. He really cleaned up at Englishtown, as he won the NHRA Summernationals as well. He qualified #2 with a 7.21/191.16 and made his way into the final against Rickie Smith, where a 7.29/188.08 beat Smith's 7.36/187 for the money. The tenth NHRA event of the season was the Mile High Nationals at Denver. Darrell qualified #2 with a 7.65/178.50, just behind WJ's 7.64. In the first round, he beat Frank Iaconio's 7.78/175 with a 7.68/178.00. Round two saw his 7.73/176.92 beat Jim Yates' 7.80/177. In the semifinals, he lost to Scott Geoffrion's 7.70. At the end of July, he picked up another win at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. It was his seventh win of the season. He qualified #2 with a 7.25/191.85, and in the first round, his 7.29/191.89 beat Gordie Rivera's 7.33/189. In the second round, a 7.28/191.24 beat Yates' tire shaking 7.66/182, and a 7.28/190.96 beat Smith's 7.30/190 in the semifinals. He got the victory in the final by pulling a holeshot and hanging on as his 7.30/190.07 beat Larry Morgan's quicker 7.25/191. Darrell almost won the next NHRA event as well, the Northwest Nationals. He again qualified #2 with a 7.27/189.59 behind WJ's 7.24/191. He improved to a 7.20 (Low ET) at 190.59 to beat Eckman's 7.35/192 in the first round. In round two, a 7.29/188.99 beat Yates' 7.35/186, and in the semis, his 7.29/188.48 beat Morgan's 7.32/187.53. In the final, he ran WJ, and his 7.29 finished second best to the Oldsmobile driver's 7.23. WJ out-qualified him again at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but Darrell's 7.36/186.87 held for the second spot in the field. He improved to 7.29/187.34 in his first-round win over Joe Lepone Jr's 7.41/185. A second-round 7.31/187.38 trailered Eckman's 7.39/187, and a semifinal 7.29/187.89 beat Morgan's 7.35/186 and moved him into the final against Allen. Bruce had problems and shut down the Reher-Morrison Beretta giving Alderman his ninth NHRA victory of the season with a 7.32/187.18.After such a great year, it went downhill after he plead guilty to federal cocaine charges, and NHRA suspended him from competing for the next two seasons. |
