Notes: Top Fuel Eliminator Runner-up to Garlits at NHRA Nationals, Indianapolis 1968. Qualified 6th at Indy at 6.882/222.32. On Sept. 22, Carbone was at Fremont for the PDA Championships. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.06/220.58 beat Kenny Safford's 7.24/217. In round two, he advanced with a 7.12/195.65 and another 7.12/208.32 beat Jim Davis in round three. Carbone made an easy pass in the semifinals when Tom McEwen fouled against him. He faced Bob Downey, driving for Leland Kolb in the final. The two had a good race, but Carbone's car was stronger, turning 7.04/227.84 for the victory over Downey's 7.18/216.

Notes: Won a huge Top Fuel meet at Riverside, California, on 3/24/68 over a red-lighting Kelly Brown. Steve was at Lions on May 11 for an eight-car show. His 7.20/220.04 qualified #3. He improved to 7.16/217.38 in the first round, to advanced when John Martin broke on the line. He reached the final, where he ran another 7.16/220.04 to take the victory over Frank Martinez. Shortly after this (May 25), he was at OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, the "Atlas Oil Tool" car broke in the first round, and his opponent, John Mulligan, advanced with a 7.78/153. He went to Englishtown on June 17 for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #11 in the sixteen-car field. A 6.89/221.66 beat Al Dauernheim in round one. It was the only six-second clocking of the round. He took it easy in round two when Duke Ray broke and slowed to 9.14/104. Steve advanced with an 8.24/174.75. He faced Don Garlits in the semifinals, and the two had a great race that saw Don's 6.92/218 get the better of Steve's 7.03/216.86.

Notes: Won PHR Top Fuel 1969. Also 6.88 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/69 and 6.99 at Riverside Hot Rod Magazine Championship. | Steve lost to Bennie Osborn in the first round, at the AHRA Winternationals and then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where the team failed to qualify. They did much better on February 9 when a 6.94 qualified second at OCIR's second All-Pro race. 35 cars tried to get into the eight-car show. An easy 7.94 advanced when Jeep Hampshire fouled in the first round, and Osborn did likewise in the semifinal, putting Steve in the final. Larry Dixon's 7.24/220 beat his 7.52/216.34 in the final giving the team runner-up money. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a first-round 6.94/218.66 beat a tire-smoking Don Garlits. In round two, John Mulligan lost a blower advancing Steve into the third round where he was to face Dwight Salisbury, Dwight had won his second round race, but had also lost a blower and was unable to repair in time so Steve singled into the semifinal where Dave Babler's 6.96/213 nipped Carbone's 6.96/220.04. On March 16, a 6.99 qualified seventh at the HRM Championships. James Warren fouled against him in the first round, and in the second a 6.80 (Low ET) at 218.97 beat Hank Clark. In round three, another strong run at 6.81/218.97 beat an ailing Stan Shiroma. In the semis he met Don Prudhomme and Don's 7.16/220 was no match for Steve's 6.82/220.58. In the final, he went up in smoke and lost to Dixon's 7.23/205. Another strong run came on March 29, at the final OCIR All-Pro race. A 6.94/206.88 qualified second, and a first-round 6.95/218.44 that beat Dixon's 7.15/203 felt good. He beat Kelly Brown in the semis before meeting Prudhomme in the final. Once again Steve took runner-up honors as the Snake beat him in the final. The next day (March 30), a 7.39 qualified sixth at the Sacramento Top Fuel Championships, but Gary Ormsby's 7.29 beat his off pace 7.60 in the first round. On April 20, NHRA held a South Central Pro Fuel Dragster Circuit race at Amarillo. It was an eight-car show and Steve ran 7.08 over Bryan Teal in the first round, and in the semifinal, Jimmy Nix fouled against him. In the final, he set a 6.99 track record while beating Junior Collins for all the marbles. At the LaPlace Division 4 race on April 27, Steve lost to Dan Rightsell in the first round. The team had an interesting day on May 11 at Tulsa for the second Division 4 race. In qualifying, Steve pulled a gigantic wheelstand that damaged the front end and wrecked the body of their dragster. The team thrashed and repaired the car, running a 7.02 to qualify first. Steve went on to beat Bennie Osborn in the final with a track record 6.87. At the third Division 4 race on May 18 at Corpus Christi, he won his first-round race over Floyd Head, but he slept against Pete Robinson in round two. Pete's 7.42 beat Steve's much quicker 7.24. The team ran well at US 131 Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 30. A first-round 6.89/203.46 beat Jim Lutz and a 6.92/215.20 beat Ron Colson's 6.96/214. But he shut off just a little too early in the semifinals letting Don Cook's 6.87/216 get past his 6.90/197.36. On June 8, the team was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. Carbone qualified #1 with a 6.79, but smoked the tires to a 7.31 first-round loss to Prudhomme's 6.96. A week later (June 15) they went to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A best of 6.98/201.79 failed to make the 32-car show. The team rebounded by winning the Cecil County East-West meet the following week on June 21. It was an eight-car show. It didn't start so well when Steve fouled in the first round, but his opponent Bub Reese got off the track and was disqualified. Carbone was reinstated and made the best of it by running a 6.94/201.78 over a fouling Tom McEwen in the semifinal. In the final, he faced John Mulligan. Carbone set a track record 6.67 to win the event over a motor blowing Mulligan at 8.85/92. | Per Steve Reyes: Steve "Mandrill" Carbone drove the Creitz and Donovan AA/FD. It seemed like a perfect fit for a while, the "Mandrill" and the "Mad Bomber" racing together. They had won the 1968 PDA race at Fremont, but soon Carbone would leave to field his own AA/FD and Richard Tharp would replace Carbone in 1970. - JM

Notes: Carbone drove for Huff in Australia from April until August-1970. Confirmed 221.67 & 221.38 at Surfers Paradise on April 25/1970. | Steve was driving for Larry Huff at Orlando in January for the Drag News Championships. He was the low qualifier with a 6.93 and in the opening round, he soloed with a 7.09/220.04. In round two he beat Robert Anderson with a 6.97/221.66 and he got another "bye" run in the semifinals where he cooled it with a 7.64/134.73. Carbone faced Don Garlits in the final and despite running a strong 6.94/226.06 he lost to Garlits' 6.82/229 (Low ET and Top Speed). The team then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where Steve qualified for the show with a 6.95. In the first round Steve left on Jim Nicoll and his 7.08 beat Jim's quicker 7.02. In the second round his 7.04 lost to John Wiebe's 6.85. Pomona featured a 32-car field for the NHRA Winternationals and Carbone qualified #10 with a 6.90. He lasted until the third round where the car broke just off the line in his race against Tony Nancy. His next stop was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. These were the days as there were 66 cars attempting to qualify for the 16 spots. Pomona had had nearly 90 fuelers show up. Back to Fremont - not only did Carbone qualify, he went all the way, winning the show. An opening round 6.92 advanced when Don Cook broke a rear end and in round two his 6.80/223.32 beat Jerry Ruth's 6.87/223. In the semifinals, Steve’s 6.69/221.12 beat Dennis Baca's 6.87 and moved him into the final against Ron Hampshire. Carbone’s car was running really well and there was no stopping him this day. Ron tried, but his 6.98/223 finished second best to Carbone's 6.67/225.00. The team was at Lions in March for the second AHRA Grand American race, but Steve failed to reach the finals. | Steve had best NHRA national event times of 6.739/219.51; assuming they were run in this car.

Notes: Steve ran this car at Irwindale on August 1st for the Gold Cup Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and Steve's 6.93 qualified #2 behind Gerry Glenn's 6.86. These two would end up meeting each other in the final. Carbone's 8.05/113.63 advanced when Hank Westmoreland fouled against him in the opening round of eliminations. A second-round 6.89/212.26 beat Joe Lee's tire-smoking 7.12/208, and in the semifinals, he got to make another easy pass when Norm Wilcox fouled. Notes: Won Top Fuel Eliminator at the 1971 NHRA Nationals at Indy, the famous "burndown" with Big Daddy in the finals. Also 6.48/229.00 at this race. Indy qualifier was a 6.394. We need to confirm the listed 6.391. | The Racers Website link is a must-read piece by Todd Hutcheson on the WeDidItForLove.com site about the 1971 Indy burndown win over Garlits. Ran 6.85 at the World Finals, 6.71 at Ontario.

Notes: Steve won the AHRA Winternationals. It was one of the last front-engine dragster national event wins. (Art Marshall won the Grand Nationals later that year). He then qualified #27 at Pomona at 6.848/214.28 but got stronger throughout eliminations. Steve surprised Jim Nicoll in round one, 6.67/227.84 to 6.88/194. In round two, he ran a quicker and faster, but losing, 6.56/229.59 that fell to Don Prudhomme's holeshot-aided 6.58/201. Steve's next event was the Ontario World Finals, where he was a DNQ (times unavailable). We are unsure if that was in the front engine car or a new dragster.

Notes: Steve drove the second Soapy Sales car at the NHRA Division 4 WCS meet at Albuquerque, New Mexico, on 8/11/73. Larry Huff drove his new Dodge Dart while Steve Carbone drove the Dodge Challenger that Larry had campaigned earlier in 1973. Steve qualified #2 at 10.10 with the "old" Challenger and beat Harold Tomlinson in the first round, with a 10.17/129.00 pass. He lost to Royce Freeman in the second round while running 10.24.

Notes: Steve was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.81/228.42 qualified #4 in the 32-car field. He beat Jeb Allen in round one, before losing to Dennis Baca in round two. Steve qualified #1 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.40/238.09, but he shut off on the line in the first round, advancing eventual winner Dwight Salisbury into round two. At the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont, Carbone qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field but lost to John Wiebe in the first round. The following week (March 18), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Steve qualified third at the 1973 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.104/242.58. He beat Jon Hansen in the first round, with a 6.306/228.42 to 6.38/233 and Flip Schofield in the second with a 6.197/226.13 to 6.35/208 before losing fire against Jim Bucher in the semifinals. Qualifying #3 was quite impressive, considering that 50 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car field. On April 1, he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division 4 opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a blower exploded in the opening round, and he lost to Vic Brown. Carbone had more trouble a couple of weeks later at the AHRA Grand American at Tulsa. There, his car broke on the line in the first round. On July 4, he was at Cornhusker for a best of three match race against Don Garlits. In their first race, Steve's 6.46/207.85 beat Don's 6.74/204. Carbone seemed assured of winning the match in their second race when his 6.27/210 beat Garlits' 6.67/213. Even though Carbone had won the match, the two came out for a final race. Garlits won by default as Carbone's car lost fire this time." Big Daddy" ran 6.33/227. The track record at Cornhusker before this race had been John Wiebe's 6.73/223. So Carbone was now the track ET record holder while Garlits got the speed end. At the 1973 AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International Raceway. Top Fuel Eliminator, Qualifying. In the "Soapy Sales" dragster (near lane), Steve Carbone was the ninth qualifier at 6.59/223 but killed an engine and could not appear for the first-round. (Bret Kepner info). Steve also ran 6.47 at Phoenix.

Notes: For the last half of the 1960 season, he installed a new blown Chevy engine in his dragster. It was 360 cubic inch, a bit larger than the 301 cubic inch motor he had been running. Research was unable to find if this bumped him up from the B/D class he had been running in, but it likely did. He set a new track record at De Soto Airport with 9.696 at 153.32 mph on Sep. 18. On Oct. 8, he set a track record at Lassiter Mountain with 9.00 seconds. Photo: Shreveport Journal, Sep. 19, 1960 - MB
