Notes: John was the fourth alternate at Gainesville at 5.306/268.17. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.34/263.22. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #12 with a 5.272/263.48. He lost to Lori Johns in the opening round. Notes: John attempted to qualify at three NHRA national events but could not crack the fields. He was the third alternate at Gainesville at 5.261/270.43. John was at Bristol on June 2 for the IHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.38/264.64 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.33/267.36 to beat a tire-smoking Pat Dakin. In the semifinal, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Gene Snow. At NHRA Indy, he was the third alternate at 5.228/276.58. John was the first alternate at Maple Grove with his best times of the year 5.133/283.28.

Notes: Photo from 1992 IHRA/Darlington, SC. Part of a two-car team with Mike Smith. The first national event John attended in '92 was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington in March. There, a 5.51/254.38 qualified #6. In the first round, he improved to a 5.49/268.57 over a tire-smoking Pat Dakin. In the semifinals, a 5.52/257.06 advanced when Richard Langson broke. In the final, he beat Doug Herbert with a 6.63/239.10 to Doug's 6.30/179. He made some tire history with this win as he won the event running Firestones. It was a long time since anything but Goodyear was the tire of a Top Fuel winner. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 5.21/276.07 was good for the #2 alternate. At Bristol, for the IHRA Springnationals, he again failed to qualify. The trend continued at the IHRA Summernationals, where he was the #1 alternate. He made the show of July 5 at the IHRA Empire Nationals, where a 5.26/277.43 qualified #5. A first-round 5.34/269.86 lost to Kim LaHaie's 5.21/276. Another DNQ came at the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.21 was the #3 alternate.
