Notes: Carlton drove the Stepp car at the southern Winter meets of '70 and at Pomona, western match races in early '71 after Dick Humbert broke his arm in a shop accident. Ran 9.81 at Orange County 2/71. | Don Carlton qualified #7 in the 32-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.022/137.82. Unfortunately, he lost to Bill Tanner in the first round. A week later (February 13), he was at OCIR for the US Pro Stock Championships. In was an eight-car show and Carlton set Low ET in qualifying #1 at 9.72. An opening round 9.80/140.62 beat Arlen Vanke's 9.90/142, but in the semifinals, his 9.81/140.62 (again) lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 9.76/140. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where his 9.75/141.50 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he fouled away a 9.89/139.93 against Bill Jenkins who advanced with a 10.01/139. By March, he was behind the wheel of the "Motown Missile." |

Notes: Trick. Won '72 Gators with a best of 9.55, including this win over Ronnie Sox in Round 1. - DO | Had Pro Stock Low ET/Top Speed at '72 IHRA Longhorn Nationals (Dallas) in final over Ronnie Sox. - RT | The Motown Missile bunch did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 in the 32-car field. In the third round, Carlton faced Ronnie Sox and his quick-leaving 9.68 beat Sox's quicker 9.64. In the semifinals, he came up against Bill Jenkins and his new Vega. Don tried hard, but his 9.82/141.95 was no match for Jenkins' 9.68/140. Things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. He had only qualified #12 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.70, but he improved to 9.58/142.85 in the first round, to beat Sox who missed a shift. In the second round, his 9.56/142.85 beat Bruce Walker's 9.77/140 in Barry Setzer's big block Camaro. In the semifinals, he faced Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson SOHC-powered Maverick. The two had a close race with Don's 9.55/143.08 holding off Ken's 9.54/143. This put the "Missile" in the final against Melvin Yow. Yow's best in eliminations was 9.70, so he had to gamble on the 'tree. He lost it and fouled away a 9.75/138 while Carlton got the victory with another 9.55 at 143.54. In April, Carlton was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he was driving his own Demon. The next race for the "Motown Missile" was at Dallas on June 5 for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals. Don qualified #1 with a 9.43/146 in the sixteen-car field. He faced the old "Motown Missile" car now driven by John Livingston in the first round, and his 9.50/144.46 put John on the trailer. He soloed in round two with a 9.52/144.46 when Chuck Wright failed to appear. In the semifinals, he ran 9.48/146.57 to beat Mike Fons' 9.65/142 in the "Rod Shop" Challenger. This moved him into the final against Sox. Ronnie had been in the 9.60s throughout eliminations and it was no surprise when Carlton carded Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 9.42/146.57 to beat Sox's 9.63/143 runner-up attempt. A week later (June 11), Don was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.66 right behind Jenkins' 9.65. But in the opening round, the car broke and advanced opponent Don Grotheer into the next round. Don was at Bristol the following week after that, for the IHRA Springnationals, but once again he was driving his own car. He also drove his own car to a win at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 24. He won the USRT race at York US 30 in July driving the "Missile.” All cars ran a qualifying round and his 9.46/145.63 beat Wally Booth's Gremlin at 9.61/140. In the semifinals, Don's 9.50/145.39 beat Dondero's 9.61/142 and set up another Sox vs. Carlton final. Sox was at the show running his new Duster and was running 9.40s. The final was close with Carlton's 9.36/146.10 edging Sox's 9.40/145 for the title. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32-car field and Carlton's 9.69 qualified #7. A first-round 9.88 beat Alban Gauthier and in round two his 9.72 beat Walker. In the third round, his 9.69 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.59. He jumped between his own car and the "Missile" so it was hard to tell which he was driving during the season, but at the High Altitude Nationals he won driving his own Demon. At the IHRA Empire Nationals, he lasted until the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Jenkins. But I'm not sure which car he was driving there. He was back in the "Missile" at Englishtown on August 6 for a USRT race where while he didn't reach the final he did run as well as 9.43/145 while beating Dondero. He did not attend the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 on August 20. |

Notes: Won 1972 IHRA All American Nationals in Bristol with a 9.39 at 146.10. Was that in this Demon or the Cuda? Also were the IHRA rules less stringent than NHRA in 1972? |

Notes: First IHRA 8-second run. Ran 9.05/148.27 at Indy. Won Springnationals at Columbus. Ran 9.25 at 147.29 to win IHRA Bristol Springs. Early low qualifier at Gatornationals at 9.22- 148.51. Also ran 9.04 at Muncie. | Carlton started the season by qualifying the "Mopar Missile" first with a 9.22 (Low ET) at 148.51 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Barrie Poole's 9.96 Pinto with a 9.70. In round two, Carlton got the odd-lot single and eased it through with a 10.20. In the third round (32-car field), he beat Bob Lambeck with a 9.50/145. In the semifinals, Don picked up the pace to a 9.34/147.78 to beat Jack Roush's Pinto and to earn the right to face Don Nicholson in the final. Nicholson got the win in the final with a 9.33. Carlton bypassed many smaller meets, skipping the OCIR All-Pro events and the Bakersfield March Meet, and he didn't run any AHRA events either (except the National Challenge race) in '73. Instead, he concentrated on the NHRA and IHRA events. The "Missile" team was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals on March 3 and came away with a big win. Carlton qualified #2 with a 9.29/148.50 (Top Speed) behind Mike Fons' 9.25. He easily got past the first-round and then ran 9.25 at only 132 to beat Reid Whisnant's 9.41/144 in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 9.17 at 141.50 to beat Nicholson's 9.28/146. In the final, he faced off against old foe Ronnie Sox in an all-Duster final. Carlton got the win running a 9.19/141.00 to win over Sox's 9.29/146. The next event the team raced at was the NHRA Gatornationals. Don qualified #2 with a 9.12/150, a tenth behind low qualifier Wayne Gapp's 9.02/149. Carlton beat Rufus Boyd in the first round, with a 9.22, but in round two, despite running a great 9.06 at an early shutting off 139.75, he lost to Nicholson's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 9.01/150. Carlton completely dominated the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas on April 29. He qualified #1 while resetting both ends of the IHRA Pro Stock record to 9.10/150.50. He then racked up times of 9.20, 9.13, and 9.12 to make the final, where he beat Bob Riffle in the "Rod Shop" Demon with another 9.10. 1973 was turning out to be the year of the Ford's with the 351 powered Pinto's winning everything, but Carlton proved that the Mopars could still run. On May 6, he again reset the IHRA Pro Stock record, this time down to 8.98 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. He ran 8.98 at 149.75 while qualifying #1. The car was promptly weighed and found to be 25 lbs overweight. He ran 9.02/151.77 in the first round, over Oscar Roberts' 9.36/146. In round two, a 9.04/149.50 advanced when Stuart McDade fouled. He dipped back into the eights in the semifinals with an 8.99/149.00, beating a fouling Ronnie Lyles at 9.22. In the final, he ran Dick Landy, who had run 152 mph here. Don took the win with another eight-second time, an 8.98/150.00 over Landy's 9.09/149. That was Don's third straight IHRA event win. He got his fourth win at the next race, the IHRA Northern Nationals at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals on May 20. He qualified #1 with a 9.24 (Sox was second way back at 9.35); Carlton worked his way to the semifinals, where he set Low ET with a 9.04 at 152.28 to beat Dave Strickler's 9.35/145. In the final, a 9.06/151.00 beat Don Grotheer's 9.47/145. He was starting to look unbeatable on the IHRA trail. Then the "Mopar Missile" pulled into Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. They were expected to run well, but nobody expected them to win as easily as they did. Don set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 9.32/147.54. In the first round, he beat Jack Roush's 9.50/145 with a 9.46/145.86. In round two, he dumped the "Grump," Bill Jenkins with a 9.45/146.81 over Bill's 9.48/145. In the semifinals, Carlton stepped up to a 9.38/147.78 over Melvin Yow's off pace 11.65. In the final, he met up with another Mopar that was wreaking havoc on the troops, Butch Leal, in his Duster. The all-Mopar final ended early when Leal fouled away a 9.44/146 while Carlton won with a 9.40/147.78. The "Mopar Missile" won for the fifth straight time on the IHRA circuit at Bristol for the Springnationals. The competition was getting closer as Don only qualified #3 with a 9.26 behind Leal (9.22) and Nicholson (9.23). But in eliminations, Carlton was strong. He ran 9.28 in the first two rounds to beat Eddie Ratliff and Strickler. In the semifinals, he beat Sox, who had taken out Leal the round before. In the finals, it was Carlton against the Pinto of Nicholson. The "Dyno Man" couldn't wait and fouled away a 9.43/145 while Carlton motored to a 9.25/147.29 for the victory. Don showed up at Milan Dragway for the NHRA Division 3 race and set Low ET and Top Speed before losing to Gapp in the final. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Carlton was one of almost 50 Pro Stock cars trying to make the 32-car field. He qualified #6 with a 9.21 and only lasted until the second round, where Sox's 9.19/147 beat his 9.28/147.78. Carlton didn't make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in August. He did run at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. Don lasted until the semifinals of the sixteen-car show, where his 9.18/147.78 lost to eventual winner Leal's 9.15/150. The "Mopar Missile" made its only AHRA showing of the year on August 26 for the National Challenge race at Tulsa. Don qualified #6 with a 9.18/148.76 in the 32-car field. He beat Raymond Martin in the first round, and in round two, a 9.19/148 beat Sonny Bryant's Big-Block Camaro at a distant 9.45/145. In the third round, he beat Mike Fons' 9.29/146 with a 9.20/149. Unfortunately, the car broke in the semifinal, giving eventual winner Jenkins a single into the final. A week later, he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32-car show, and Carlton ran 9.24/149.00 to qualify #14. A first-round 9.23 beat Sam Gianino's 9.33, but in the second round, both he and Melvin Yow ran 9.05 (Don at 148.20), with Yow winning in Billy Stepp's Dodge. Carlton was shooting for his sixth straight IHRA victory when he rolled into Bristol for the All-American Championships on September 16. He qualified #7 with a 9.20, and in round one, he beat Hubert Platt. In round two, he picked up to a 9.15 to beat Dave Kanners' 9.44/144, and in the semifinals, he advanced when Yow lost an engine. Once again, he faced Nicholson in a final round. It was a good race, but "Dyno" stopped Carlton's streak of wins with a 9.14/150, beating the "Missile's" 9.16/149.00. He made it into another IHRA final at Rockingham for the US Open in October. This time he faced Wayne Gapp, and Wayne ran an impressive 8.85 to win over Carlton's 9.12/151. |

Notes: Ran match races and AHRA and IHRA events. Don was dissatisfied with the NHRA weight breaks for the Mopar Hemi-powered cars, but when NHRA lowered the weight break to 7.10 lbs per cubic inch at the NHRA Gatornationals, he thought he would show up and give it a try. A 9.06/150.25 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field and I'm sure he wasn't too happy when a 9.09/149.50 in the first round, lost to Ron Hutter's Vega at 9.06/149. He went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals where he ended up as first alternate for the eight-car show. Things didn't go much better at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Clyde Hodges' 9.41/147 in the first round, with a 9.43/147.54. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. |
