Notes: Chadderton qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternaionals with a 6.450/207.37. He lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the opening round of competition, 6.70/212 to 6.717/218.97. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Leroy's 6.38/220.58 qualified #4 in the twelve-car field. Bob Pickett got out of shape in the "Lil Demon" and shut down in the first round, while Chadderton advanced with a 6.41/214.79. He faced Don Prudhomme in round two, and the "Snake" got the jump at the line, and his 6.51/212 held off Leroy's quicker 6.48/222.22. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race. in the opening round, his 6.91/208.33 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.86/208. The car was sold to Roy Phelps and Alan Herridge later that year and ran in England. |

Notes: Chevrolet was officially out of racing, but independent racers stayed loyal to the mark. Chadwick followed the route Malcolm Durham and others followed when he went with the biggest gun he had, stuffing a '63 Z-11 427 mill into his first-year Chevelle. (The engine was a spare from fellow Southwestern racer Dick Harrell.) The result was a bowtie approximation of Ford's race-ready Thunderbolts. It wasn't an NHRA-legal A/FXer, but close enough for match race purposes. Injectors, fuel, and a lighter car would follow. - RT |

Notes: Chadwick was at Lexington on June 5 for a best of three match against Ed Rachanski's 427-wedge powered Comet. It was a good close match, but Kelly won all three races. In the first race, his 9.80/140.40 beat Ed's 9.85/134. Rachanski fouled away a 9.78/139 in their second race, and Kelly won with a 9.79/140.89 and a 9.74 in the final race beat the Comet's 9.85. |

Notes: Kelly Chadwick's "Wild Thing II" was one of the first Camaro funny cars built. The car was delivered to Don Hardy Race cars as a body in white. Hardy converted the Camaro into a match bash funny car. The "Wild Thing II" began with an injected Chevrolet, but a blower soon went on the top of the engine. The "Wild Thing II" raced in 1967 and 1968 and was one of the last non-fliptop match bash funnies to be a serious contender. Kelly drove the car to an 8.35/169.00 known best with Steakley Chevrolet sponsorship. The "Wild Thing II" became too outdated at the end of 1968 and was replaced. It ran 8.50/167.28, 8.43/167.59, and 8.40/167.59 at the inaugural OCIR Funny Car Manufacturers Meet on 11/25/67. | In out of the first outings with the new Camaro, Chadwick faced off against Gene Snow on April 23 for a best of three match race at Amarillo. He won the first race when Snow fouled, and he lost the second race when he fouled, but in the final, he won the match by beating Snow with a track record 8.80 at 166.35. On May 7, he raced against Art Malone's new Mustang in a best of three match at Oklahoma. Malone had a bad day as Kelly won all three races with 9.52/150.75, 9.29/158.73, and 9.57/157.06 times. A week later (May 13), he was at Memphis to duke it out with Herb McCandless in the former Ramchargers Dart. It was another best of three and in the first round, Chadwick's 9.01/155.85 lost to Herb's 8.91/156. But Kelly came back to win the final two races and the match with to more 9.01's and a best speed of 156.85. Amarillo held a match race on May 21 and Kelly's Camaro was there to run Al Vanderwoude. He fouled against Al in the first race, but came back to win the next two races and the match with a 9.13/167.91 and a track record 8.77 at 168.22. Kelly lost two straight against Eddie Schartman at Muncie on July 1. In the first round his 8.97/157.51 lost to Eddie's 8.55/163, and in the second round, the Camaro lost a motor giving Schartman the match race win. He finished runner-up to Pete Gates at Ubly, Michigan, for the Great Lakes Championships. A final round 8.70/165.18 lost to Pete's 8.48/173. On July 9, he faced Roger Lindamood's Charger at Quaker City in Salem, Ohio. Once again he lost two straight. His first race 8.90/169 lost to Lindamood's 8.83/172 and an 8.94 in the second race lost to Roger's 8.84. |

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Added Blower, Sponsor. Early in June, Chadwick was one of four cars running in a match race at LaPlace. He ran a personal best (to this point) of 7.89 to beat a fouling Leonard Hughes at 8.06. In his second race, he shut down early to an 8.78 that lost to Tom Smallwood's 8.13 in the "Kingfish." The third race saw Chadwick doing battle with Della Woods' new Charger. The Camaro took the win with an 8.30/181.80. Kelly was at Amarillo on June 23 for a best-of-three-match race against Gene Snow. He was having transmission problems and lost two straight. Snow's transmission gave out in the third race, and Chadwick won with an 8.36/189.46. The following week (June 28), he was at Detroit for the Midwest Super Stock Funny Car Championships. A 7.98/182.92 advanced past the first-round when Don Schumacher lost fire, and in round two, an 8.04/169.81 beat Hank Garcia's 8.44/159 in the "Car Shop" Camaro. In the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Fred Goeske. On July 4, he was in Oklahoma City for an eight-car show. His 8.01/183.28 beat the "Site Brothers" 'Cuda in the opening round of eliminations. In the semifinals, his 7.93/191.80 beat Leonard Hughes' 8.08/190. It was an all-Chevy final as he faced Mike Burkhart's similar Camaro in the final. Chadwick got the victory, running Low ET with his 7.81/191.14 getting the best of Mike's 7.98/190. He raced Paul Stefansky in a best of three match at Houston in July. Kelly won all three races when Paul's car developed transmission problems. Chadwick's times were 8.13/185.18 in the first and only race, and he ran two solo passes of 8.45/181.80 and 8.44/185 to sew up the match. Hr ran a confirmed 7.79 at Detroit and 7.93/188.28 at Bristol 9/20/68. His '68 record had him race 68 times, and he won approximately 75% of his races. |

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Chadwick is well-known in two different fields. In Texas, as a girls’ basketball coach and nationwide as a premier drag racer. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful 1969 Camaro was his third funny car and his first with a flip top and tube chassis. Chadwick had raced the "Wild Thing" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mainly in the Southwest. The Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) - BS | Did he run 7.22/209 in 69/70? | Kelly Chadwick had Don Hardy built him a new Camaro for '69. The car used a 427 Chevy. Mondello did the heads, and Don Hardy prepared the blower. A Hilborn four-port injector unit fed the 60% nitro mixture. Howards supplied the cam. A TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. | Chadwick started the season by qualifying eleventh with an 8.298/187.89 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Clare Sanders' 8.09 beat his 8.53/161.57 in the first round. On April 27 at Amarillo, Texas, he won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race beating Fred Goeske in the final with track records of 7.82/192.70. Kelly beat Jack Chrisman with an 8.18 in the first round, and he the semifinal, he fouled against Norm Weekly, but Mr. Norm's Charger had engine trouble and couldn't repair for the final, so Chadwick was reinstated. In May, he was at Capitol for the "Mr. Chevrolet" Invitational. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.68/193.96, but in the second round, the Camaro got sideways while racing Malcolm Durham, and he shut down to an 8.96/179.64 loss. Epping held a Cavalcade race on June 15. Kelly lost his first race to Gary Dyer's 7.76/186. He did win his second race with a 7.71/188.28 over a fouling Jess Tyree (7.90/177). In the final, Dyer ran a track-record 7.55 over Kelly's 7.97/164.50 runner-up effort. Later in June, he did win at the Maple Grove Cavalcade race, where he beat Dyer in the final for the win. On July 3, Chadwick picked up another Coca-Cola Cavalcade win at US 30, Gary, Indiana. It was his third Cavalcade win in a row. He beat Ken Safford in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.68/196, and in the second round, he beat Jess Tyree's Firebird with a 7.71/199. In the final, he beat Marv Eldridge's 7.98/188 with a 7.66/200. Another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race was run at National Trail on August 17, where Chadwick broke a driveshaft in his first race and watched Dick Bourgeois single to an 8.17 win. In his second race, against Marv Eldridge, he won with a 7.79 when Marv broke. In his third race, an 8.78 beat Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 9.40. Dyer won the race in the Mr. Norm car. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 7.543/195.22 qualified Chadwick sixteenth. But in the first round, he stepped it up to a 7.383/196.93 to beat Bobby Wood’s 7.55/199. In round two, Danny Ongais' 7.38 put him on the trailer. On September 20 at Dallas International, he competed in an eight-car show. A first-round 7.52 beat Fritz Callier's 7.69. But a 7.29/204 from Gene Snow in the semifinal dropped his 7.48/194.38. Another win came his way on October 18 at Lions for its Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.53/177.86 over Tyree in the first round, and a second-round 7.47/190.67 beat Eldridge's 7.76/181. In the final, Bob Smith in the Invader fouled away a Low ET of the meet 7.26/193.13, letting Chadwick cruise to an 8.06/138.46 win. At the Lions fifth annual East/West Championships on October 25, he lost to Jim Liberman's 8.06/175 in the first round, with an ailing 10.00. He competed at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2 but lost to Lew Arrington's 7.89/194 before the finals. He managed to qualify third for the GM team with a 7.71 for the OCIR Manufacturer's meet on November 7. The following day, a much better 7.47/196.06 beat Rusty Delling's 7.63/191 in his first race. A series of wheelstands did in any chance of winning against Larry Reyes' 7.40/202 in his second race. And a 7.85 in his third race beat a quicker Tony Weathers' 7.75. A Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.51/195.83 at the time. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Kelly Chadwick is well known in two different fields. In Texas, Kelly is well known as a girls’ basketball coach. Chadwick is also known as a premier drag racer in Texas and beyond. Kelly worked his way through a series of race cars until he reached the funny car ranks. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful '69 Camaro was Chadwick's third funny car and his first with a fliptop tube chassis. Kelly had raced the "Wild Thing I" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mostly in the southwest. The 1969 Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. The Camaro’s best times were 7.10 at 209 by the end of 1970. (Photos provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) | Kelly Chadwick was always a Chevy guy. He ran really well even into '70 using the Chevy engine against the more powerful Mopar Hemis. The Hardy built 124" wheelbase Camaro used a stock sized 427 "Rat.” It used a Bowers built GMC 6/71 that was 22% overdriven. He used Hilborn injection and as much as he was a Chevy guy he did use a TorqueFlite transmission. What was unusual was the fact that he was still running a Chevy rear end with 3.70 gears. Most of this info was taken from the September. 70 S/S Magazine. The article claimed at the time of the writing a best of 7.26/207. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 7.70. An opening round 7.76 beat low qualifier Dick Bourgeois who was driving Don Cook's Chevy-powered Corvette. Unfortunately, Kelly fouled against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in round two. Reyes would go on to win the race. The NHRA Gatornationals was only an eight-car show and Chadwick failed to qualify there. On March 15 he was at Dallas for the season opener. There were ten Funny Car's there and they all were to run three rounds. Kelly beat John Dekker in his first race with a 7.81 and in his second race, he again faced Dekker and he won again with a 7.75. His best time came in the third race where a 7.59/190.27 beat Bobby Steakley. He and Mike Burkhart were co-winners as both won all three of their races. In April he was at Amarillo for a best of three against the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Kelly lost the match when he lost the first two races, but he did win the third race with his 8.07 beating Leonard Hughes' 8.08. Chadwick won the Canadian Drag Race Championships held at Napierville in May. A final round 7.91/184 beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman for the money. He was one of the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of stars that raced from track to track. In early June he was at the Cavalcade race at Atco. He lost to Dale Pulde's 7.32/190 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.69/174.75. In his second race, he beat Liberman's 7.57/181 with a quick-leaving 7.91/183.29. His times were not good enough to get to the final. The following week (June 13), he was at Great Meadows for another Coke race. A first-round 7.58 lost to Pulde's track record 7.45. But he beat Pulde in the semifinals and got to race Fred Goeske in the final. It was a weird final round as Chadwick lost fire and then Fred blew his engine and coasted across the line for the victory. By mid-'70, you had to run a Hemi to qualify at NHRA national events. At the NHRA Springnationals, every Funny Car qualifier ran one. But at the smaller tracks, where traction was difficult to get, the Chevys still had a chance. Kansas City held an eight-car show in the middle of June and Chadwick was there. But a first-round 7.57/178.92 was no match against Don Schumacher's 7.34/193. Suffolk held a Cavalcade race at the end of June and Kelly proved there was still a place for the "Rat" motor in Funny Car competition. His times weren't great, but he still took home the trophy. He started with a 7.50/182.92 over the ailing Mickey Thompson Mustang and n round two his 7.56 beat Bobby Wood. This put him into the final against Goeske's 'Cuda. Fred broke his transmission and Chadwick got the win with a 7.68. To show it was no fluke, he won the next Cavalcade race at Salem (Quaker City). There he ran 7.80/186.92 over Wood and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.64 at 185 while beating Johnny Wright (M/T Mustang). He again faced Goeske for the gold and this time the 'Cuda lost fire giving Kelly a 7.69/187 run for the win. The wins didn't stop as on July 5 he won the Cavalcade race at Blaney. There he beat Cliff Zink (Stone, Woods and Cook) in the final with a track record 7.50 at 199. Englishtown was the next stop for the Coca-Cola circuit and Chadwick ran well there, too. Zink beat him in the first round, with a 7.42/193 to his 7.54/192.71, but Chadwick then made runs of 7.62 and 7.50/182.92. He made another final at the Cavalcade race held at Cecil County, but he fouled against Wood. He got another big win at the PDA Funny Car Nationals held at Sunset Drag Strip, an eighth-mile track. He opened eliminations with a 5.04 over Paul Aray's 6.05. A second round 5.09 took out Jerry Caminito's SOHC-powered Mustang at 6.15 and a semifinal 5.05 beat Gordon Mineo. He met with another Chevy-powered car in a rare all-Chevy final. Bruce Larson had mirrored his times in his USA-1 Camaro. He had run 5.04, 5.08, and 5.05 to reach the final. It was sure to be a close race, and it was as both stepped it up, but Chadwick's track record 4.97 got him the victory over Larson's close 5.01. His next stop was at the Cavalcade race at Aquasco. He didn't win there. There were no Hemi-powered cars in the final at Cecil County for the Cars Magazine Championships. It was a good old Ford vs. Chevy match with Chadwick facing Tommy Grove's SOHC Mustang in the final. Grove was both quicker and faster at 7.21/196, but Kelly's 7.32/191.08 got there first, bringing home another trophy. He then faced off against the Stone, Woods and Cook Hemi-powered Mustang for a best of three match at Humboldt Country's 1,000 foot track. Chadwick won three straight, resetting the track record in the first two races with first a 5.85 and then a 5.81. A final 5.99 won the match when the Mustang blew a rear end. Yet another win came at the Niagara Cavalcade race where he stopped Steakley in the final. |

Notes: Kelly qualified #9 at Pomona, running 7.668/185.95. He beat Dick Bourgeous in round one, 7.76/193.13 to 7.85/184, but lost to Larry Reyes in round two, 7.72/193 to 8.56/129. He set his best NHRA national event times at Gainesville but was the first alternate at 7.471/197.36. Those were Kelly's only NHRA national events in 1970. |

Notes: Chrysler dominated the Funny Car ranks in '71, and the Chevy campaigners were having a really tough time keeping up. Chadwick was loyal to the Chevrolet cause and refused to switch to a Hemi. His performance was hurting for most of the season, but he turned the quickest time for Chevy-powered cars near the end of the year. The Camaro was built at Don Hardy's shop, and it had a 118" wheelbase. The body was a product of JE Fiberglass. Chadwick and his crew chief, Ray Sullins, put together the 427 Chevy engine. As much as he was a Chevy supporter, Chadwick did run a Mopar rear end with 4.56 gears. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to better the 7.30 "bump." Kelly was one of four Funny Cars running at the Amarillo Opener in March. On an early check-out pass, he warmed up with a 7.23. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, but his 7.53/184.04 lost to Snow's 7.02/209. In his second race, he ran Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max.” Once again, he lost. Another four-car race was run at Southland. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, who was debuting his new Charger. Chadwick's 7.35/187.11 beat Snow's new car blues at 8.19/128. Unfortunately, the run cost Kelly a rear axle, and he was done for the day. Also, early in the year, Chadwick faced Art Ward driving the "Avenger" Challenger in a best of three match at Cornhusker. He had problems in the first race and shut off on the line, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.36 and 7.46 with a best speed of 196.07. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships in May. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.14/190 in the first round, beat Sam Miller's 7.29/207. Chadwick fouled against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in the semifinals. But Rowe burnt some pistons and could not run the final, so Chadwick got back into the show. He faced another Chevy-powered car in the final, Bruce Larson's. Kelly ran 7.31/177 for the victory when Larson blew a transmission. Chadwick was running really well at Oswego on August 8 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. He ran three 6.8's to win the event. He was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American race, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Kelly was Low ET qualifier with a 6.734 at OCIR's annual Manufacturer's Meet. He ran several more 6.70s during Saturday night eliminations, but parts breakage kept him from having a chance at making the finals. Won NHRA Division 3 event at Bowling Green on 9/19/71 when Al Marshall crossed the centerline in the final. |

Notes: Chadwick had one of the last competitive Chevy-powered fuel Funny Cars. He was at Capitol Raceway in June for its Mr. Chevrolet Race. Kelly's first-round 6.90/211 beat Bruce Larson and in the semifinals, his 7.10/211 beat Mike Burkhart. He faced Butch Maas in the final and his 7.10/183 lost to Butch's 6.72/205. At the IHRA Nationals in Dallas, Kelly qualified eighth with a 6.64 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, a wheelstanding 7.80 in the first round, lost to alternate Connie Kalitta's 7.10. He was at the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. During a television interview, he stated that the car had run a best of 6.54/218 during the season. At Amarillo, his opening round 7.06 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.72. Kelly qualified at 6.679/204.54 at Tulsa PRA. Times 1972 (Tulsa TV Interview) |

Notes: This car was destroyed in a top-end collision with Connie Kalitta's Bounty Hunter at Union Grove, Wis. This was Chadwick's last funny. He quickly transitioned into a Pro Stock Vega. - RT | Ran 6.64 at Dallas. Time had run out for the Chevy-powered Funny Car's by '73. Every once in a while, one might run a 6.7, but while they were doing that there were six Hemi powered cars running 6.40s. Chadwick was loyal to the end of his Funny Car career. This was his last funny car. Like all the others before, it was built by Don Hardy. The car featured a 118" wheelbase The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. The "Rat" motor now displaced almost 500 cubes thanks to a Delta Machine Crank and a .062 overbore. Venolia pistons sat on Howards rods and Howards also supplied the cam. A Cragar manifold held a 35% overdriven Larry Bowers blower. A Hilborn injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmission fed the power to a Dana rear end. You couldn't help, but root for him as he was almost all alone in a Chrysler dominated class. |

Notes: Chadwick's first Pro Stock. He was still racing his Vega funny car at the time (though not at the same events). This photo is from Union Grove in the early Spring of 1973. Chadwick was at Edgewater on May 5 for the Super Pro Stock Circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one. In the semifinal, he fouled away a 9.69 against Jim Halloran, who advanced at 9.67. Shortly after that, he was at Tri-City for a best of three match race against Ed Schartman. It was not Chadwick's day as he was at least two-tenths of the Boss 429 Maverick's pace. Kelly lost all three races. His first race saw his 9.64/140.84 lose to Eddie's 9.41/142. The second race saw Kelly's 9.74/140.40 fall to the Maverick's 9.47/141. The final race was run just for fun as Schartman had already won the match race. But once again, Chadwick's 9.89/138.67 lost to Ed's 9.34/143. |

Notes: Ran 9.18 at Lakeland, TN, 9.30 at Pomona, 9.31 at Columbus, 9.19 at Englishtown, 9.34 at Indy, 9.23 at Ontario. | Chadwick was the first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 9.30/144.23, but when both Hubert Platt and John Lingenfelter broke, Kelly was inserted into the field. Unfortunately, it didn't do much good as a 9.36/145.16 in the first round, lost to Wayne Gapp's 8.92/151. He was at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace Dragway. There, he made it into the final, where his 9.44/143.76 finished runner-up to Fred Shafer's 9.27/145. In April, he faced Jim Halloran in a best-of-three match race at Lakeland. Kelly won two straight with a best of 9.22/148. Best NHRA national event times were 9.190/147.54 at the Summernationals. Highly suspect these 9.05/154.37 times were from a match race. |

Notes: Also ran 9.34 at OCIR PDA 7/75. | Kelly Chadwick failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Kelly was at LaPlace Dragway in March for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. He made it into the finals against Wayne Gapp. There, his 9.23/146.57 lost to Gapp's 9.06/150 in the "Taxi." He was at State Capitol Raceway in April for the next Division 4 race, where he qualified #5 with a 9.23, but he lost early. On July 26, he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. His 9.34/146.10 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Sonny Bryant's 9.05/151. But he got called back into service for round two as the Low ET loser from the first-round when Jean Batteux hurt his motor while winning his opening race. So Chadwick returned in round two, where his 9.30/147.29 lost once again, this time to Mark Yuill's 9.16/149. |
