Notes: One of the original 11 1964 A/FX factory Comets and the sole station wagon. James Pflueger owned a Honolulu Lincoln Mercury dealership and was also the owner of Hawaii Raceway Park. He apparently brought "Dyno" Don Nicholson's "Ugly Duckling" wagon over for the track's opening day ceremonies on the Fourth of July weekend-1964. It's been claimed this was a one-time deal, but how long it stayed in Hawaii is in question. While this photo shows it lettered, a National Dragster pic (7/10-64) from this early July race clearly depicts an unlettered car. We do know that Ed Schartman raced this same car (once more re-lettered) back on the mainland at the '64 Indy Nationals. Notes: Who was the first drag racer to crack the 200 mph barrier? Was it Chris Karamesines at Alton Dragway on Apr. 24, 1960, with a 204 mph run that many disputed? Was it Don Garlits at Island Dragway on Aug. 2, 1964? The debate rages on, but another racer was clocked at over 200 mph and has been all but forgotten. On June 19, 1960, at Freeway Drag Strip near Houston, Kent Chartagnier, who owned a speed shop in Beaumont, Texas, was clocked at 201.78 mph. He backed it up with runs of 197.36 mph and 196.92 mph. For several months he was credited in Drag News as holding the 1320 national record for A/FD, but without explanation, his name was removed from the listing in the Sep. 17 issue of Drag News. For a few weeks, no Top Speed mark was listed for A/FD; only an ET mark was credited to Don Garlits. Then in the Oct. 1 issue, Garlits was credited with the speed mark for A/FD at 182.18 mph.
