Notes: Algon-injected 461" Olds in a light 92" owner-built chassis. This car, photographed in late '58, was featured in the March '59 issue of Hot Rod. The article quoted unattributed times of 9.48/150.0. Cheatham was a favorite to take Top Eliminator honors at the '58 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City but narrowly lost the A/D class semifinal to eventual Top Eliminator Cyr & Hopper. He was killed six months later in a crash at the March Meet at Bakersfield when his rail somersaulted in the traps after striking a marker barrel. - RT Oklahoma City, Okla. 9/58 (NHRA Nationals); Cheatham proved a formidable opponent throughout the season. On Feb. 16 at Kingdon, he ran 145.17 mph. On Apr. 27 at Half Moon Bay, he took TE with 136.36 mph. He set a track record in B Open Gas at Little Bonneville in San Jose of 137 mph on May 4. He turned 134 mph at Half Moon Bay on May 11. On June 1 at Kingdon, he ran 136.88 mph. He took TE at Little Bonneville on June 15 with 135.35 mph. He took another TE victory at Half Moon Bay on July 13 with 141.95 mph. He set another strip record at Little Bonneville and won TE honors with 141.5 mph. On Aug. 10 at Half Moon Bay, he set a world record with 9.56 at 143.31 mph. A week later, at Little Bonneville, he upped the track record to 142.85 mph. On Aug. 24, he set an impressive new world record of 9.48 at a mind-blowing 150.50 mph. Those marks and wins set the stage for a very successful showing at the national championships at Oklahoma City, where he was runner-up in the dragster eliminations to winner Ted Cyr. En route to his second-place finish, he beat Art Arfons' Green Monster, Ralph Gonzalez, and Jack Moss. He registered the second fastest time ever on gas with a 9.3 run. Returning from Oklahoma, he entered a 2-day race on Sep. 6/7 at Camp White in Oregon, clocking 9.97 at 144.46 mph. At Half Moon Bay on Sep. 28, he ran 147.29 mph. On Oct. 12 at Half Moon Bay, he registered another good showing with 9.40. He finished the season with wins at Kingdon in B Open Gas on Nov. 2 with 143.31 mph and Dec. 7 with 9.8 at 145.89 mph. Notes: Floyd had the strongest Ford on the IHRA trail in '91. It ran well enough to qualify first at the sixth race of the season, the Gateway Nationals. His times were good enough for Low ET and Top Speed, and he made it to the finals before losing to Rickie Smith. He got Smith back in the first round, at the IHRA US Open but failed to get into the finals. At the season finale, the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, a 7.17/192.81 qualified #2, but he fouled against Tim Nabors in the first round.

Notes: Cheek qualified #8 at the IHRA Winternationals with a 7.01, but a 7.07/195.73 by Steve Williford in the first round beat his close 7.07/195.86. At the second IHRA race of the season, the Nitrous Nationals at the 1/8 mile Huntsville track, a 4.58/155.35 qualified #5, but he failed to make it into the finals. Another good run came in the third race, the IHRA Cornplex Nitrous Nationals on May 17, where Floyd again qualified in the top half of the field with a 7.27/190.67, good for #7. Once again, he failed to make the final. At the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #14 with a 7.23/191.65, and in the first round, a 7.18/191.85 beat Charlie Garrett's quicker 7.12/193. A 7.20/192.34 lost to Jerry Yeoman's 7.15/193 in the second round. Then came the IHRA Summernationals in Cayuga. Cheek got back into the top half of the field in qualifying #7 with a 7.09/194.13. He slowed down to a 7.24/190.71 in the first round but still beat Garrett's 7.27/196. In the second round, he won a close one with Cheek's 7.17/192.38 beating Williford's 7.17/193. In the semifinal, Rickie Smith dealt out a 7.05/197 that was too much for Floyd's 7.11/193.17. On July 5, IHRA held its Empire Nationals, and a 7.18/193.54 qualified way down in the #14 spot. A first-round 7.23/191.73 lost to Jim Revis' 7.13/192. On July 19, he qualified #13 at Epping for the IHRA Northeast Nitrous Nationals. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to compete. He improved that finish by reaching the semifinals of the next event, the IHRA Bluegrass Nationals at Ohio Valley Raceway, another 1/8 mile track. In the semifinal, his quicker 4.58/155.92 lost to Billy Huff's 4.59/155. In August, he ran at the IHRA Mid-America Nats, where Floyd's 7.12/192.63 qualified #7. A first-round 7.21/191.08 beat David Drongowski (7.23/194), and a second-round 7.19/191.36 beat an ailing Chris Hunt (10.40). Huff got him again in the semis with a 7.15/194, beating the Probe's 7.18/191.97. Things didn't go so well at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on August 30. He qualified second with an excellent 7.07/196.47, but in his first-round race, he lost an engine while running 7.17/177.47 over Terry Leggett. Cheek was unable to repair and make the second round. On September 13, he broke into the sixes at Epping for the IHRA North American Nationals, where a 6.99/198.89 qualified #6. A first-round 7.01/196.97 beat Robert McDonald (7.09/196), but a 6.99/198.98 came out on the losing end against Harold Denton's 7.02/197. At Darlington on September 27 for the IHRA US Open, a 6.94 (Low ET) at 199.60 qualified #1, and a first-round 7.11/195.73 beat Todd Tutterow (7.24/188). Unfortunately, a second round 7.12/196.37 lost to Garrett's 7.10/195. He ended the season at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. The Sunoco Pro Stock Showdown was run on Sat (October 10), where the eight lowest qualifiers during the season met for the shootout. Floyd qualified well enough throughout the season to get the sixth spot in the field. A first-round 7.20/194.97 lost to eventual winner Denton's 7.10/196. For the Fallnationals race, he failed to qualify with a best of 7.23, which was good for the sixth alternate. Throughout the year, the Probe was listed with many different engine sizes. At the Huntsville track, a 798 was used; a few races later in Canada, for the Summer race, a 720 was listed on the entry sheet. At the next race, a 714 was used. By August, the motor had grown to 800 cubic inches for the Mid-America Meet. Yet in September, at Epping, the 714 was back in use. At the season-ending World Finals, where he failed to qualify, he was running an 806. All in all, the little Probe was still probably the toughest Ford on the IHRA Circuit. That would change in '93 with Robert Patrick and Roy Hill coming on board.

Notes: Floyd started the season running an 806 inch Jon Kaase engine at the IHRA Winternationals by qualifying #10 with a 7.03/198.80. A first-round 7.14/196.54 lost to Robert Patrick's 6.96/197. For the second IHRA event, the 1/8 mile Bama Nationals in April, a 714 inch engine was used and a 4.53/156.68 qualified #9. He had set the track record two weeks previous at 4.51 going into this event. Once again, Patrick got him in the first round. This time Floyd's late leaving 4.58/156.27 lost to Patrick's 4.62/156. He used a different engine size/combination at the next event as well. At the IHRA Springnationals on June 6, he showed up running 786 cubic inches. A 7.11/195.43 qualified #5. A first-round 7.15/194.04 beat Craig Hankinson's 7.21/195. Tim Nabors' 7.20/195 fell to Cheek's 7.16/193.67 in the second round. A semifinal 7.23/192.76 was no match for Doug Kirk's 7.10/197. It was still a good showing and things would continue to get better for the team. On June 27, he showed up at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals running the same 786. A 7.14/194.59 qualified #5. A 7.26/189.27 got past Nabors' tire shaking Lumina. Tire shake slowed Billy Huff in the second round while Floyd cruised to a 7.19/193.42 win. In the semifinal, a holeshot 7.20/194.42 beat Charlie Garrett's 7.18/195. In the final, a 7.22/191.77 had to settle for runner-up to Kirk's 7.15/196. It was on to Atco for the IHRA Summernationals on July 18. Everyone was flying there and a 7.05/198.54 only qualified #12. Cheek gave Terry Leggett a driving lesson in the first round, with his 7.09/195.35 beating Terry's 7.05/195. Another 7.09 at 196.16 beat Garrett in the second round. In the semifinal, Harold Denton's 6.99/196 beat the Probe's 7.08/195.01. After running the 786 for the last three events the team went back to the 806 engine for the IHRA Northeast Nationals at Epping, New England, on July 25. Once again, everyone was putting down the numbers with Floyd's strong 7.04/198.71 only qualifying #10. An off pace 7.18/194.59 lost in the first round, to Mike Thomas' 7.05/198. It was back to the 786 for the next race at the Nebraska Motorplex for the IHRA Mid-America Nationals on August 15. Once again, Floyd qualified well with his 7.15/193.96 qualifying #6. He ran 7.17/193.79 over Jim Revis and 7.19/193.17 over Nabors before losing to Thomas again with a 7.16/193.50 to Mark's holeshot 7.17/192. A new engine combination (810) was run at the next event on August 29 for the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #9 with a 7.11/195.73 and repeated that number in the first round, at 195.27 in beating a tire shaking Garrett. He slowed to a 7.17/195.10 in the second round, but it was enough to get around Kirk's 7.21/195. In the semifinal, a 7.15/195.73 beat a tire shaking Roy Hill and put him in the final against Patrick. There, despite a 7.14/196 he had to again settle for runner-up to Robert's 7.08/194. The Alvin Whaley led team stayed with the 810 engine for the IHRA North American Nationals, and they were rewarded with a 6.98/200.17 that qualified #7. Another six, a 6.99/201.88, beat Billy Huff's 7.03/199 in the first round. In the second round, a 6.98/201.47 beat Hill's quicker 6.95/201. Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.97/201.61 lost to Kirk's 6.96/200. For the last two IHRA events of the season, an 812 Kaase power plant was used. At Maryland for the President's Cup Championships, a 6.99/198.67 qualified #11. A first-round 7.09/192.10 lost to Garrett's 6.92/198. At Bristol for the season-ending Fallnationals in October, a 7.05/197.15 qualified #8. For the second race in a row, he was stopped in the first round, when John Montecalvo's 7.02/195 beat his 7.05/198.67. This team was good as attested by them qualifying at all the IHRA races, something few teams could say. He finished the season third in IHRA points.

Notes: Started the season running a 710 cubic inch Probe at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.92/200.04 qualified #7 and in round one, Floyd went 6.93/200.35 to beat Harold Denton's 7.05/198 in the "Party Time" Firebird. In round two, Cheek's 7.00/198.45 lost to Mark Thomas' 6.93/201. This little Probe was always good on 1/8 mile tracks and it was no different when Floyd ran at IHRA's Dixie Nationals at Carolina Dragway in April. He set both ends of the track record while qualifying #1 with a 4.47/161.66. The car was now running an 810 cubic inch powerplant. Cheek went on to win the race by running 4.56/157.84 over Terry Waters' 4.62/153, a 4.57/158.53 beat Billy Huff in round two, and a semifinal 4.58/159.15 beat Carlton Phillips' Beretta. In the final he met Roy Hill in an all-Ford match. Floyd got the jump on the racing school conductor and his 4.56/159.37 held off Hill's 4.55/158. After that, Floyd went to Tulsa for its independent Springnationals meet. Once again, he qualified on the pole with a 6.85/201. He set a 6.84 (speed on run was 202.20) track record in the first round, while beating Robert Duncan. He got the odd-lot single in round two and in the semifinals, a 6.93/196 stopped Darrell Warren. In the final he went up against Huff. The two had a good race, but the Probe came out on top with a 6.91/199, beating Billy's 6.95/199. Next stop on the IHRA trail was Bristol for the Springnationals. Floyd ran 7.02/198.71 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round, running 7.09/197.67 and losing to Charlie Garrett's 7.10/188.

Notes: Cheek qualified #2 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but in the opening round, he was upset by John Konigshofer, who ran 7.09 to beat his 7.13. Shortly after that, Floyd was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 6.99 qualified second to Ronnie Sox's 6.96. He beat Mark Thomas in round one with a 7.08, and when Charlie Garrett had problems in round two, Cheek advanced with a 7.51. Floyd had his own problems in the semi-final and slowed to 7.76 in a loss to eventual winner Roy Hill's 7.04. He was back at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals on October 1st. His 6.89/201.20 qualified #6. He fell off to 6.98/200 in the first round and lost to John Montecalvo's 6.94/199.

Notes: Cheek qualified #8 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 6.84/203.65. GM and Ford were at war in the "Mountain Motored" war at this race; GM had the numbers. Only four Fords qualified, and Floyd's was the second quickest of the bunch. Three of the Ford drivers lost in round one, and Cheek was one of them. His 6.82/203.65 fell to David Jenkins' 6.87/202. At Maryland International, things evened up a bit when seven Fords qualified for the IHRA President's Cup Championships. Floyd was #7 overall with a 6.81/205.52, the fourth quickest Ford driver. In the opening round, his 6.84/202.73 beat Richie Stevens' 6.85/201. In round two, he beat Jon Yoak with a 6.85/202.73, and a semi-final 6.85 defeated Jenkins' 6.89. It was Ford vs. Chevy in the final as he faced Tim Nabors, and Cheek's 6.83/204.57 got the victory for the blue oval boys over Nabor's 6.93/200. The next race on the IHRA schedule was the IHRA Summernationals at Cordova Dragway in the first week of July. Cheek's 6.84/204.68 (Top Speed) was the quickest Ford and fourth overall. John Nobile shut down against him in round one, and his 6.86/203.57 advanced. In round two, his 6.89/202.65 beat Yoak's 6.96/200. The semi-finals featured two GMs against two Fords. Floyd was hoping to make it two wins in a row, but his late 6.88/203.02 lost to eventual winner Nabors' 6.91/201. He didn't have to wait long before scoring his next win, which came at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in August. He had "only" qualified #11 for the IHRA Northern Nationals, but he ran quick enough to win. His 6.86/204 beat Nabors' 6.90/200 in round one. Then John Montecalvo fouled against him in round two. That also happened in the final, as Richie Stevens fouled away a 6.76/204 while Cheek coasted to 13.18/61 for the victory in the all-Ford final. Shortly after that, he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.72/206.61, and he backed up the speed for a new IHRA record. He was heading towards another final round appearance, but he fouled against Tom Lee in the semi-final.

Notes: Cheek was at Darlington on January 14 to make some test runs. He ran a best of 6.653/208.23. The speed was the fastest ever for a Pro Stock car. At Bradenton, for the IHRA Winternationals, the Fords were flying. They took the first five spots in qualifying. Cheek was #4 at 6.76/205.71. He beat Tony Gillig in the opening round with a 6.80/204.96. In round two, his 6.78/204.82 defeated Jon Yoak. But he then fouled away a 6.79/205.57 in the semi-final against Jerry Yeoman, who advanced at 6.81/202. The teams were back at Darlington in May for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Floyd's 6.78/205.10 qualified #13. His day ended early as his 6.83/204.63 in the first round lost to Gillig's 6.75/204. Cheek set Low ET while qualifying low at Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals in July. His 6.82/202.76 got him the spot. In round one, a 6.89/199.55 easily beat John Konigshofer's troubled 7.32/152. Another 6.82 at 201.58 took out Yoak's 6.92/199 in round two. He picked up to 6.86/203.09 (Top Speed) in the semi-final to drop David Jenkins' 6.90/200. He faced Ron Miller in the final, and Cheek had the edge as he had been quicker in every round than Miller. But Ron got out on him in the final, and his 6.92/199 held on for the victory over Cheek's 6.88/202.27 runner-up effort. After qualifying on the pole, he barely made the show at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. His 6.90/201.31 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier John Montecalvo in round one and shut down to 7.7/142.16 in a loss to John's 6.89/200. Photo: 1998 IHRA Northern Nats, Stanton, MI. Defending IHRA Pro Stock World Champ, far lane, qualified 5th at 6.76/205.54 but was beaten by Gene Wilson's holeshot in Round 1, a 6.88/192 over his 6.78/205.

Notes: Cheek had a very good season in 1999. The IHRA season started in Darlington in March for the Winternationals. Cheek's 6.633/208.20 qualified #3, but the race was rained out after qualifying. Near the end of the month, IHRA held its Amalie Nationals at Bradenton. Floyd qualified #5 at 6.70/207.42. In the opening round, his 6.77/205.90 defeated John Montecalvo's 6.80/202. He then ran another 6.77 at 205.52 in round two to beat Charlie Peppers' 6.86/201. Gene Wilson had problems against him in the semi-final and Cheek's 6.76/205.66 advanced. It was a all-Ford final as he faced Jon Yoak. Yoak fouled away a 6.77/206 while Floyd ran 6.76/205.85 for the victory. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Springnationals. Cheek qualified #3 at 6.72/207.70 and went on to win this race as well. In round one, a 6.94/203.29 took out Jeremy Bevins' quicker 6.85/203. In the second round, his 6.81/204.73 stopped Tim Nabors' 6.85/202. In the semi-final, he picked it up to 6.71/207.70 to beat Chris Holbrook's quicker 6.68/208. Once again he faced Yoak in the final and this time Cheek's 6.74/206.99 got the better of Jon's 6.75/207. IHRA then returned to Darlington to wrap up its Winternationals. It appeared as though Cheek would make it three wins in a row in IHRA competition. He started by running 6.80/203.80 over Bevins' 6.83/205. In the second round, his 6.74/205.04 beat Tom Lee's 6.79/200. A 6.73 in the semi-final put a end to Yoak's 6.83 and he faced low qualifier Holbrook in the final. The two had a good race but Holbrook's 6.72/206 snagged the victory over Floyd's 6.74/204.60. It was then off to Cordova for the IHRA Summernationals. Floyd qualified #4 with a 6.75/206.70. In round one, his 6.84/204.26 beat Peppers' 6.86/203. But in round two, he fouled away a 6.84/203.83 against eventual winner Lee's 6.85/205. Shortly after that, he was at New York for the IHRA Empire Nationals. He ran 6.71/206.99 to qualify #7 but suffered his first first-round loss when his 6.77/206.29 fell to Dwayne Rice's 6.78/205. He qualified #7 at the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.83/203.65. A easy 7.05/193.46 advanced in the first round when Gene Wilson got out of shape and shut off. Montecalvo also had problems against him and shut down in the second round. Cheek ran 6.85/203.31 to advance. In the semi-final, he got out on John Konigshofer and his 6.83/203.80 held off John's better 6.82/204. He went up against Ron Miller in the final. Ron's times had been better than his throughout eliminations. But Floyd pulled onre "out of the hat," as his holeshot 6.83/204.01 in the final got him another victory over Miller's better 6.79/205. 1999 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. 1997 IHRA Pro Stock Champ qualified 7th (no times), defeated and out-of-shape Gene Wilson in Round 1 with a winning 7.05/193 and John Montecalvo in Round 2 with a 6.85/203. In the semis, Cheek's holeshot 6.83/203 beat a quicker, but losing 6.82 by Jon Konigshofer in the semis and finally another holeshot win over Ron Miller in the final. A 6.83/204 beating a 6.79/205 for his third win of year. Photo is final round action. Notes: Cheek was a Ford racer even after Ford left IHRA. Ford drivers had one every IHRA event except one in 1987, and when Billy Meyer purchased the IHRA, he changed the rules for the '88 season. Oldsmobile sponsored Meyer. For the '88 season, he went to the 500 cubic inch format, but continued to let the IHRA "Mountain Motored" cars run, but they had to carry extra weight. After Rickie Smith, driving a Ford, won three of the association's first four races, Meyer added still more weight and made the big-engined cars uncompetitive. The Ford runners dropped like flies as these big-engined cars were expensive to run. Ford would not win another Pro Stock race for many seasons in IHRA. After Meyer left, IHRA returned to its roots, letting the "Mountain Motored" cars compete again. Cheek was among the first to help make the brand competitive again. In 1990, he ran well and continued that momentum, bringing Fords back into the IHRA fields. In 1997, he won the IHRA Pro Stock Championship. By 2000, almost half the qualified field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals was made up of Ford Probes or T-Birds. Floyd qualified #15 there with a 6.80/202.27. In the first round, he got out on Dwayne Rice, who was late off the line. It looked like Cheek had the win in hand when the Probe got out of shape, and he had to back out of it. He slowed to 8.30/114.19 in a loss to Rice's 6.71/206. The next race was the IHRA Springnationals held at Rockingham. Cheek qualified #11 with a 6.75/205.57. In the opening round, his 6.70/207.08 fell to Steve Spiess' 6.69/208. He then went to Canada in the first week of June for the IHRA Canadian Nationals. A 6.68/206.94 qualified #10. In round one, he had a good race against Jon Yoak that saw his 6.72/206.23 lose to Yoak's 6.68/207. At Cordova, his 6.74/206.54 qualified #11 for the IHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.89/206.92 against Yoak's 6.68/209. 2000 IHRA Northern Nationals, Stanton, MI. Defending event champ (far lane) qualified 5th at 6.76/208.23 and defeated a broken Jason Collins in Round 1 with a 6.81, but got out of shape in round two and lost to Wally Stroupe's winning 6.77.
