Notes: Albert Waits and Tom Killeen had the only Top Fuel dragster within 300 miles of New Orleans. The team had a tough time securing a driver until they got Dave Chenevert behind the wheel. The kid could drive as his first pass was 7.25/215. Before this ride, Dave had been driving C.J. Kearney's gas dragster. The Shreve Automotive car used a 165" Don Long chassis and weighed 1,280 lbs. The engine was a 392 Hemi using parts from Venolia, M/T, Delta, Donovan, Enderle, and Engle. | Confirmed 7.019/210.76 at Indy Nationals 9/67. Ran 7.272/216.86 at NHRA World Finals at Tulsa.

Notes: Southland Dragway hosted a sixteen-car TF race on July 4 that saw Dave's 7.15 qualify low. Because the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round and made an easy 7.73/155 pass. In round two, his 7.25/186 beat George Donaldson. Rain then ended this race. Steve Carbone faced off with Chenevert on July 6 for a best-of-three-match race at LaPlace.Steve won the first race on a solo when Dave lost fire on the line. In their second race, Chenevert's 7.04/207.84 beat Carbone's tire-smoking 7.59/198. Dave then won the match with a 7.27/204.08 in the third race over Steve's 7.83/172. On August 3, Dave was at Shelby Country Raceway for the NHRA Division 2 race. He reached the final against "Sneaky Pete" Robinson after stopping George Cox in the semifinal with a 7.36/195.64. In the final, he had problems and snowed to an 8.14/189.06 runner-up finish to Robinson's 7.22/169. Chenevert made ten passes at Indy in attempting to qualify for the NHRA Nationals 32-car field. On his last pass, his 6.66/210.28 got him the #15 spot in the show. Another 6.66 in the first round beat Jim Walther. But in round two, he fouled against Carbone. Shortly after that (September 14), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Divisional final, where he lasted until the semifinal. On October 12, he won the Atlanta $10,000 Meet. A final round 7.07/209.78 claimed the victory over an engine-blowing Marvin Schwartz. For the NHRA World Finals at Dallas, Dave's 6.83/217.91 qualified #9 for the sixteen-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gerry Glenn. Gerry fouled away the Low ET of the meet while Chenevert advanced with an eased-up 8.03. In round two, a 6.78/215.92 defeated Tom Raley's 7.01/199 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. Preston Davis was the next to fall as his 6.92/217 in the semifinal fell to Dave's 6.82/218.97. He faced Carbone in the final, and although he ran a good 6.80/221.13, he lost to Steve's better 6.71/207. Won Division 2 1969. Photo is the Robert Anderson dragster, SPE, 426 Hemi. Ronnie Martin won Dallas WF TFE in 70 in this car. Did Chenevert drive it after Martin? The Shreve Auto (next photo in the photo web link) was a Don Long 392 car. Chenevert was runner-up to Carbone at the Dallas World Finals '69.

Notes: Won inaugural NHRA Gatornationals. Dave qualified #4 at 6.71. His opponents Ron Colson, Jim Walther, and Ron Potter fouled against him in the first three rounds. Chenevert ran a best of 6.76 in eliminations. In the final, his quick-leaving 6.74/231.95 beat Jim Paoli's 6.61/226 for the title. Dave's next stop was at LaPlace on March 15 for a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race. Chenevert was driving the Mooneyham and son car in his first race, but he blew the rear end out of it. After that, he jumped into Robert Anderson's car and then ran 6.89/207.37 to beat Bobby Woods. In his last race, he set a new track record 6.80 at 221.67. His best NHRA times were 6.715/231.95 from the Gators.
