Notes: He set a track record of 142.73 mph at the first opening race of the new San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on May 6. At San Gabe on June 3, he blew his engine in the final eliminations, losing to Kenny Arnold. At San Gabe, on July 4, he had to withdraw from eliminations after a cylinder began pumping oil on a run of 145.63 mph in 11.39. With his dragster sidelined, he replaced Bob Armstrong for one run driving the Armstrong & Richer Nesbitts Orange Special, shattering the track record with a time of 148.02 mph in 11.16. On July 8 at San Gabe, he withdrew from eliminations after a winning run over John Bradley at 132.93 mph in 11.15, but his motor was making sick sounds. On Aug. 25 at Lions, he suffered engine problems during eliminations forcing him to withdraw early, but not before garnering the meet's top time with 139.10 mph at 10.98. On Oct. 6 at Lions, he got top time honors with 147.68 mph but blew a transmission in the process forcing his exit from further rounds of eliminations. At the 2-day first anniversary race at Lions on Oct. 27/28, he made it through a few elimination rounds with a best of 11.00 at 142.18 mph. On Dec. 16 at Saugus, he drove Jim Kamboor's dragster to a 10.14 at 151.63 mph clocking. It marked his first time over 150 mph. Notes: In 1957, Frank Cannon had a '55 T-Bird that he had been racing (and winning with) at Santa Ana, using a 312ci supercharged Ford engine. But in a quest to go quicker, he built a 454ci Hilborn-injected Chrysler Hemi. He got the help of the Chrisman brothers to hop it up and squeeze it into his T-Bird. It was really flying with the new engine. There are differing accounts of how Cannon teamed up with Chrisman in their joint dragster venture. Both stories involve a wager that Mickey Thompson purportedly made with Cannon (either for $100 or $300) about the feasibility of his engine being able to power a gas dragster over 150 mph. One story was that Cannon had a conversation with Mickey before going to the Chrismans to propose putting his engine into a dragster they were building. The other story had it that the wager was made after the Chrismans and Cannon had already established their joint venture and were already in the process of putting Cannon's Chrysler into their new dragster chassis. Whichever account is accurate (if at all), the dragster, which would evolve into the fabled Hustler, entered Lions' 2nd anniversary meet on Nov. 10. At this time, it lacked the front bullet-shaped aluminum body that it would acquire in 1958. Fifteen fast gas dragsters entered the big Lions meet, including Lefty Mudersbach, Jack Chrisman (driving Wayne Reed's roadster), Bob Tapia, Del Thorkelson, and even Frank Cannon (driving his own blown Ford Santa Fe Service A/D). It took thirteen separate rounds of run-offs to determine a winner. That Top Eliminator winner turned out to be the Chrisman-Cannon Chrysler B/D. For their win, they received the world's largest drag trophy - 6'4" tall and 200 pounds. Their best times during the meet were 10.69 and 136.57 mph. Before the end of the year, Chrisman racked up a couple more TE victories at Lions and steadily improved in his times. The 1958 season would see the evolution of the Chrisman-Cannon injected B dragster into the iconic Hustler supercharged Chrysler A dragster and cement its place in drag racing history. |

Notes: The 1958 season saw the evolution of the iconic Hustler dragster of Chrisman & Cannon from an injected B/GD to a full-bodied A/FD, one of the most famous cars in drag race history. It ran on gas up through when it won the best-engineered car award at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in late August. They had the fully-enclosed aluminum body with the bullet-shaped front made in time for the March Meet at Bakersfield. It ran in the B/D class without a supercharger or front cowling when it won Top Eliminator at the Santa Ana Gold Cup race on Apr. 20, where it turned 10.76 at 140.97 mph. They had the new front-mounted supercharger on the car when it raced at Lions on June 7, improving their time to 10.28 at 147.29 mph. On June 14 at Lions, Cannon may have collected on his wager with Mickey Thompson as Art ran 152.80 mph in the course of winning Top Eliminator. They had trouble keeping the motor in one piece for several weeks, with a string of blown engines plaguing them in June and into July. But once they got those problems sorted out, they returned to their winning ways and good times (in more ways than one). They went through three rounds at the Nationals at Oklahoma City before getting beaten by Ted Cyr. At the Drag Racers, Inc. world championships at Riverside on Sep. 27, they ran the engine on fuel for the first time. They turned 9.61 at 157.72 mph on their first run on alcohol. In the first round of eliminations, Art beat Pete Ogden, who was driving Romeo Palamides' dragster with a 9.50 at 163.33 mph clocking. In round 2, he beat Hank Vincent's Top Banana with a 9.60 run. The 3rd round was his undoing when he added 20% nitro to the alcohol mix and blew the blower. A blown blower was their undoing at the race at Gardner Field in Taft in Central California, but not before setting a strip record on both ends with 9.39 at 163.33 mph. The year concluded with other uneventful outings, but there was the promise of more good things to come in 1959, including the appearance of a new car-Hustler II. Notes: Chrisman ended the 1958 season on a high note and kept it rolling into 1959. At one of these early-season meets (possibly the Feb. 15 Riverside event), his blower exploded, blowing some of the body off and torching the rest. The exquisite paint job that it had when it appeared on the front cover of the Jan. 1959 issue of Hot Rod Magazine required a redo. On Feb. 15 at Riverside, he took Top Eliminator with a world record time of 8.54 and a speed of 181.81 mph. Two weeks later, he took Top Eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet. Another feather in his cap. He took another TE win at Riverside on Apr. 19. Could he win the big meets? You're dang right! At Bakersfield on May 3, he clocked 8.41. Hustler I was really cooking. At Riverside on May 10, he ran 8.65 and 180.00 mph. He turned 8.80 at 176.81 on May 24 at Vaca Valley. On a return visit to Vaca Valley, he ran 176.81 mph but cracked a cylinder head. Not to worry. Chrisman-Cannon had another trick up their sleeve-Hustler II was in the wings. The Hustler II was an open-bodied car with the engine exposed, very different in appearance than Hustler I. Art drove Hustler II to a TE victory at Riverside on July 26 on the car's first time out. Things looked very promising with the new car. But after a disappointing outing at Lions and blowing the motor at Fremont, Art went back to racing Hustler I. But misfortune stalked him. He made a run at Fremont in Hustler I on Sep. 13 at 169.17 mph during time trials, but a ring and pinion gear gave out and put him on the trailer. At a 2-day meet at Kingdon the following week, he was beaten by Ted Cyr in the early rounds of eliminations. That was it for the season. Notes: Right out of the gate, Hustler II showed for all the world that it might have all the promise of another Chrisman-Cannon winner in the making. At its very first time out at Riverside on July 26, Art drove it to a Top Eliminator win with a best run of 8.95 at 166.05 mph. The times certainly weren't eye-opening, but it was only its racing debut, and it was hoped that things would improve. In short, they didn't. Very different in appearance from full-bodied Hustler I, Hustler II was open-bodied, exposing the blown Chrysler engine to view. The Drag News report of its Riverside victory called it "really an immaculate looking dragster." A week after the great showing at Riverside, they took it to Lions on Aug. 1. Art had it winning through the first two rounds of eliminations, with a best clocking in round two against Glen Stokey with 10.02 at 149.25 mph. Nothing to write home about, but Art withdrew from the final round of eliminations so he could have the opportunity to match race the Arfons Brothers' Green Monster. The Allison-powered Monster had only minutes before set a Drag News 1320 national record for gas dragsters of 167.91 mph. The Monster won handily when Art bogged on the line and blew the engine. In the next two weeks, they repaired the engine and towed north to Fremont for a race on Aug. 16. This turned out to be a big disappointment as they cracked the cylinder wall in the motor during a warm-up on straight alcohol. And with that, Art Chrisman had had enough with Hustler II. He dusted off good old Hustler I and went back to racing it. Hustler II made one more appearance of note in the '59 season at Riverside on Dec. 20. They took out the Chrysler and replaced it with Red Wilson's blown Hemi Dodge. Frank Cannon drove it but lost in early rounds of eliminations to Cyr-Hopper. Although the '59 season began with promise for Hustler II, it ended on a sour note.
