Notes: Started the season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.32/187.96. He made his way to the final by stopping Gary Herman's 7.40/186 in round one, with a 7.35/18.81, in round two a 7.34/188.44 beat Mark Pawuk while a semifinal 7.34/186.67 beat Warren Johnson's 7.36/188. In the final he met up with Jerry Eckman. Both ran 7.33 (Allen at 188.44), but Jerry got the win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he again qualified #3 with a 7.29/188.28. He slowed to 7.38/186.68 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Darrell Alderman's Dodge. An easy 7.53/163.87 advanced in round two when Ken Koretsky broke, but in the semifinals, his 7.45/186.41 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.43/184. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 7.260/188.52 qualified #4. He stayed strong running 7.27/189.07 in round one, over Dester Cambron and 7.28/188.79 in round two over Jerry Eckman's quicker, but later 7.26/188. In the semifinals, his 7.29/188.38 took out Rickie Smith and set up a final round meeting with WJ. Warren got the win with a 7.25/189 when Bruce shut off with problems to an 8.50/117.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.32/188.12. He beat Joe LePone Jr in the first round, before losing to Scott Geoffrion in round two. Allen set a track record in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 7.260 at 189.83 got him the spot. In the first round, he beat Frank Sanchez, but in round two he lost to the race's eventual winner Larry Morgan. At the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Allen didn't do so well. He qualified #9 and lost in the first round. The seventh race on NHRA's schedule was the Cajun Nationals. Bruce ran 7.35/188.24 to qualify #5 and in round one, he beat Don Beverley. An off-pace 7.51 in round two lost to Pawuk's 7.43. The NHRA Springnationals was another bad outing for the team. They qualified #9 and lost to Alderman in the first round. It was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals next and Bruce ran 7.38 to qualify #8. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, before losing to Eckman's 7.35 in round two with a 7.40. Allen had his worst qualifying position (#14) of the year at the NHRA Summernationals. In round one he lost to Lepone Jr. |

Notes: Photo from 1990. | Bruce started the '91 season by running a 7.26/190.79 to qualify #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he ran 7.30/189.35 to beat Bob Glidden's 7.35/188. In the second round, he slipped to a 7.45/187.03 that lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.34/188. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Allen qualified #9 with a 7.35/187.85. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.43/186.25 lost to Rickie Smith's 7.41/186. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Supernationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.31/188.60. Bruce beat Eckman in round one, and a 7.26 beat Smith's 7.28 in round two, but another 7.28/188.40 in the semifinals was not enough to stop Darrell Alderman's 7.21/190. The Gatornationals saw the Reher-Morrison team qualify #6 with a 7.25/190.47. Allen ran a 7.33/189.23 in the first round, to beat Mark Pawuk's 7.39/186. In round two he slowed even more, down to a 7.35/188.56 that lost to Eckman's 7.34/187.50. The next NHRA event was at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational. Allen qualified #4 with a 7.25/191.36. He beat Larry Morgan's 7.41/184 in the first round, with a 7.33/188.56. In round two, both he and Glidden ran 7.35 (Allen at 188.67), but Bob got the win. The fifth race of the year at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bruce qualified #8 with a 7.33/188.36. |

Notes: The Reher & Morrison team debuted a new Chevy Lumina for the '92 season. The first time out, Bruce took it to Houston for pre-season testing. He was rewarded with times of 7.15 and 7.14, both at 193. He qualified the car #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.220/191.85. He beat Frank Iaconio in the first round, before losing to Jerry Eckman's 7.20 in the second round with a 7.272/190.35. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, a 7.257/190.71 qualified #5. He improved to a 7.245/190.27 in the first round, that beat Joe LePone Jr., but he lost to Warren Johnson in round two, 7.29/190 to Bruce's off pace 7.66/145. At Houston for NHRA's third race of the year, the Supernationals, Allen set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 7.164/191.97. He slowed to 7.336/189.67 in the first round, but still beat a broken Gary Brown. In round two, he beat Yates' 7.24/189 with a 7.219/190.79. He pushed the tree a little too hard in the semifinals and fouled away a 7.186/191.61 that lost to eventual winner Mark Pawuk's 7.22/190. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Bruce qualified #7 with a 7.185/193.09 (tough show!). A 7.20/192.47 advanced past Kenny Delco's 7.25/190 in the first round, but he lost to Larry Morgan in round two. Bruce's 7.26/191.53 lost to Morgan's 7.21/191. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Allen qualified #9 at 7.24/189.87. He beat Yates in round one, with a 7.21/191.20, but he lost to Jerry Eckman in the second round. The next event was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Bruce qualified #2 with a 7.237/190.35. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.33/189.27 lost to Pawuk's 7.29/187. Another first-round loss came at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 7.265/190.92, but he lost to Lewis Worden with a 12-second shutoff. The bad luck streak continued into the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #10 with a 7.317/189.03, but a 7.286/188.83 lost to Yates' holeshot 7.30/188 in the first round. Things went the team's way at the NHRA Grandnationals. Bruce pushed the car to a 7.247/191.12 to qualify #4. Another 7.24 at 191.57 beat Paul Rebeschi in the first round, while in round two, a 7.30/190.31 took out Rickie Smith, and in the semifinals, his 7.296/190.67 beat Johnson who had tire shake and slowed to 7.49/190. This put him into the final against Yates. In the final, Yates had problems and slowed to 7.86/172 while Bruce picked up the victory with a 7.270/190.63. It was Allen's first NHRA National event win since the 1990 NHRA Northstar Nationals. Bruce qualified #2 at the Summarnationals at 7.267/190.03. He beat a surprising Kenny Delco in round one, by holeshot, 7.326/189 to 7.322/188. He beat a broken Frank Iaconio in round two with a 7.34/189 but then fell to Ricky Smith in the semis, 7.29/189 to 7.35/189. Bruce qualified #10 at Denver at 7.69/178. He lost to Bob Glidden in round one, to of all things, a holeshot, 7.75/178 to Bruce's 7.68/178. The team qualified #5 at Sonoma at 7.212/191.20, but Glidden got him in round one, again, 7.25/191 to 7.26/190. Bruce qualified #8 in Seattle at 7.218/189.99 but got upset in round one, by Pal Rebeschi, 7.27/189 to 7.33/189. Bruce ran 7.29/188.44 in Brainerd to grab the #7 slot. He beat Alban Gauthier in round one, 7.38/186 to 7.50/167, but WJ got him in round two, 7.34/189 to 7.39/186. At Indy, Bruce qualified #6 with a 7.256/190.47, but Rickie Smith ended his day in round one, 7.29/189 to 7.33/188. Bruce found himself in the bottom half of the field at Maple Grove; his 7.224/190.07 entered the field in the #12 position. He lost to Jerry Eckman in round one, 7.19/191 to 7.25/189. The team entered Topeka in the #7 position at 7.264/189.99. Rickie Smith fouled against Bruce in round one, and Allen got a 7.258/190.35 victory. But nemesis WJ won their round two match, 7.20/192 to 7.28/189. Allen found the 'teens at Ennis; his 7.158/192.02 earned the #5 qualifying position. In round one, he beat Mike Thomas, 7.167/191.89 to a fouling but surprising 7.173/191.44. Geoffrion ended Bruce's day in round two, 7.19/191 to 7.22/190. Bruce ended his season with a #7 qualifying effort at the World Finals at 7.220/191.36. He beat Joe Lepone Jr. in round one, 7.215/191.04 to 7.24/190. Bob Glidden defeated the Super Shops Chevy in the second round, 7.19/192 to 7.226/190.67. It was a hard-fought but disappointing year for the once-dominant team. |

Notes: At Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, Bruce qualified #9 with a 7.23/191.89. A first-round 7.25/190.96 beat Larry Morgan's 7.26/190. In round two, a 7.24/191.44 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.15/193. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Arizona Nationals, where a 7.26/190.23 got the spot. A first-round 7.25/190.07 beat Paul Rebeschi's 7.31/190. In round two, a 7.24/190.67 beat a late Warren Johnson at 7.22/192. In the semifinals, he fell to Mark Pawuk's 7.23/191 with a 7.25/191.12. At the Slick 50 Supernationals at Houston, Bruce qualified #6 with a 7.13/193.54. A first-round 7.19/191.93 lost to Rebeschi's 7.20/190. The next stop on the NHRA trail was the Gatornationals. There Allen ran 7.15/193.42 to qualify #12 (tough show). The "Super Shops" Lumina was the only Chevy that qualified for the field. He lost to Pawuk in the first round. After that, it was off to the NHRA Winston Invitational. Bruce used a 7.14/193.00 to qualify #6, but a first-round 7.18/193.96 lost to Jim Yates' 7.19/193. He qualified #8 with a 7.20/192.47 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. In the first round, both he and Bob Glidden ran 7.24's, but Bob got the win. The sixth spot on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Once again, only one Chevy qualified, and it was Allen's. A 7.23/190.83 qualified #9. In the first round, a 7.26/190.23 beat Rebeschi's 7.31/189. A consistent 7.26/189.63 lost to eventual winner Scott Geoffrion's 7.16/192. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, the Reher-Morrison team had to be disappointed that they did not earn enough points qualifying throughout the year to take part in the Budweiser Pro Stock Challenge. For the actual race, Allen qualified #13 with a 7.18/192.47. In the first round, he got around Vince Khoury's 7.42/190 with a 7.37/188.32 as both had sub-par runs. In round two, a 7.30/190.55 beat Frank Iaconio, but in the semifinals, his 7.23/191.48 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.19/194. In Mid-June, the team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Bruce ran an excellent 7.24/190.63 to qualify the lone Chevy #4 in the field. But he was upset in the opening round, Lewis Worden took a gamble on the tree, and it paid off with his 7.32/188 holding off Allen's quicker,7.27/189.83. Shortly after that, they stopped at Topeka, Kansas, for the NHRA Western Nationals. Two Chevys qualified, and Bruce was quicker, running 7.29/189.35 for the #11 spot. Both lost in the first round, with Allen losing to Morgan. Oldsmobile's support of the Pro Stock class was deep in these years, and more and more drivers were switching to Olds. As a result, when the NHRA tour got to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, over half of the field was made up of Cutlass'.Bruce qualified #11 with a 7.68/176.85. Only one other Chevy made the show. Both were gone after the opening round. Allen's 7.76/177.61 fell to Steve Schmidt's 7.67/180. Allen picked it up at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. The lone Chevy qualifier ran 7.20/191.44 to qualify #3. He took out Mark Osborne's 7.34/190 in the opening round with a 7.28/190.55. In the second round, he lost to Rusty Glidden. Bruce's best times were at NHRA Houston Spring at 7.130/193.54. |

Notes: The Reher-Morrison was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Allen qualified #13 with a 7.145/193.59 and had the only Chevrolet in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Kurt Johnson in the opening round, 7.17/192 to 7.207/192.55. Bruce's only other NHRA national event was the Western Auto Nats in June, where he was a disappointing mid-pack DNQ at 7.366/188.48. Was the team's lack of participation on the circuit because of a crash? |

Notes: Allen was the sixth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.209/192.51 best. The team also failed to qualify for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where Bruce was the ninth alternate at 7.240/191.93. Houston didn't go much better as his 7.170/193.92 best was the eleventh alternate. These shows were tough to make as many good cars were running at the time. It had to be hard for a multi-race winning team such as this that had so much success in the class to see their car among the non-qualifiers. Things went better at Gainesville. Forty cars showed up and attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Allen qualified on the "bump" with a 7.104/195.10. In the opening round, he ran a 7.103 at 194.67 but fell to low qualifier Warren Johnson's 6.95/198. It was then off to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, where Bruce was the first alternate at 7.13/194.51. This was followed by a trip to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he was the third alternate at 7.170/193.38. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Mid-South Nationals. Allen's 7.181/193.63 best was the ninth alternate there. While the team ran better at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, their 7.140/193.59 best was still the third alternate for the show. Richmond found more of the same. Allen was the fourth alternate for the NHRA Virginia Nationals with a 7.196/192.59. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.234/190.72. In round one, Bruce's 7.326/189.59 lost to eventual winner Steve Schmidt's 7.18/192. He was left outside looking in at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where his 7.137/192.96 was the first alternate. He also failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, where his 7.620/180.90 was the fourth alternate. The headaches continued at Sonoma, where Bruce's 7.182/194.04 was the fifth alternate for the NHRA Autolite Nationals. Seattle saw his 7.140/192.88 claim the second alternate slot for the NHRA Northwest Nationals, and Brainerd was no different as he was the third alternate at 7.223/191.40 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Everyone was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and Allen ran well, just not well enough, as he was the third alternate at 7.157/193.09. The only other race he qualified for this season was the NHRA Pioneer Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. His 7.073/194.63 got him the #15 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he did not win a single round of competition this season as Jim Yates' 7.05/194 in the first round beat his 7.144/192.59. Bruce was the first alternate back at Topeka for the NHRA Craftsman Nationals with a 7.168/191.40, and he was the sixth alternate for the NHRA Chief Nationals at 7.112/193.92. He ended his season as the third alternate for the NHRA World Finals with a 7.125/194.21. (Comp number changed to 50 to align with sponsor name. Formerly 3216.) |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. DNQ for Indy with best of 7.11/194.21 on a 7.10 bump. | The Reher and Morrison team was not running its best in '96. Driver Bruce Allen was hard-pressed to qualify at national events. At the season opening NHRA Winternationals, his 7.11/194.97 was good for the second alternate. Things were even worse at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where he was the eighth alternate with a 7.12/194.42. Things were no different at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where Bruce's 7.07/195.95 was the second alternate. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. Bruce tried hard, but his 7.09/194.51 ended up as the eighth alternate for the show. The team also attempted to qualify at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but a 7.08/194.21 (fourth alternate) failed to make the cut. Determination paid off the following week at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Bruce qualified for the first time since the '95 Keystone Nationals. His 7.08/194.97 got him the #12 spot. In the first round his 8.27/127.89 advanced when Steve Schmidt fouled. It wasn't pretty, but it was his first-round win in NHRA competition since the '93 Chief Nationals. Unfortunately, a second round 7.17/193.13 lost to Tom Martino's 7.08/194. |

Notes: AWB. Charlie Allen ran this car in 1965 through early 1966. This car became Jon Giardina's "Dumbo" 1969/72. 1966 for sale ad says car ran 9.9 at 147. 1971 National Dragster Pro-File says car went 9.67 at 142. Not sure if times were run in 1965 or early 1966. This car apparently survives. if it is legitimate, the Atlantic Dodge Flyer resides in a private collection, and has been restored. |

Notes: Allen was at Irwindale on April 8 for a best-of-three-match race against Steve Bovan. He won the match two straight with times of 9.10/136.57 and 8.99/155.17, but the win didn't come without problems as his right door flew off the car at the top end of the track in his first race. He was supposed to show at Stardust Raceway for a match against Gas Ronda's Mustang on May 14, but he was a no-show. On June 24, he beat Clyde Morgan's "Vicious Vette" two straight at Irwindale. Their first race saw Allen's 8.98/159.29 nip Morgan's quicker 8.97/157. The 'Vette got out of shape in the second race, and Charlie ran another 8.98 at 162.45 to win. Confirmed 8.23/184.80 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67 and 8.45 at Irwindale. |

Notes: Allen debuted his new Dodge Dart funny car sponsored by Crenshaw Dodge at Irwindale on Jan. 28. That began a season filled with match races against other "experimental stock" racers such as Fred Goeske, Gas Ronda, John Mazmanian, Kip Brundage, and Cecil Yother. He took funny car eliminator wins at OCIR and Irwindale. He also won the funny car eliminator title at what was billed as the North American Fuel and Gas Championships at Puyallup Dragway in Washington on June 15 against a 16-car field. Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16-car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki). | Charlie was driving the "Crenshaw" backed Dart at OCIR on July 20. All eight cars ran the first two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Allen made sure he got into the final by setting Low ET in the first round, with a 7.60/184.80 that beat Dale Williams in Jess Tyree's Firebird. In his second race, he ran 8.04/188.28 to beat Dee Keaton's 8.34/177.51. In the final, he met up with Ray Alley. The two had a good race going until Allen's transmission failed to shift, and he shut off to 8.83/113.20 while Alley got the win with a strong 7.88/190. In Mid-August, he was at Mission Raceway in BC, where he set the track record down to 7.60. On a backup run, he ran 7.75. He set a 7.68 Irwindale track record in October. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. We need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. - BP |

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. In 1969, Saddleback Dodge was the new sponsor, and Charlie repainted the car the more familiar red and silver. Charlie Allen and crew member Jeff Crowther ran a best of 7.29 at 199.96 in 1969. Keith Black 426 Hemi, B&M Torqueflite 3 spd. Auto. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki and Bill McLauchlan). | The 199.96 was run at Irwindale VERY early in 1969, and it never matched that speed the rest of its career. If that's a typo, this Dart did run 197.11 at Indy in 1969. February 1970 Speed & Super Cars magazine says this car ran 7.20s in Connecticut. I don't recall that. - Dennis Doubleday | Charlie started the '69 season with a big win at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. A 7.79 qualified sixth in the sixteen-car field. A 7.72 beat Clare Sanders in Jim Liberman's second car at 7.90, and in round two, he singled with a 7.61/193.96 when Norm Weekly failed to fire. He ran his best ever in the semifinal, a 7.56 (up to this time) at 199.96 over Ray Alley. In the final against Don Schumacher, he ran another 7.56 over Schumacher, who lost a transmission. On January 12, he ran a match race against Jim Liberman at Irwindale. Jim won the first race with an 8.12/191 that beat the wheelstanding Dart. In the second race, Allen's 7.74/182.54 beat Jim who broke a rocker arm and shut off. In the final race, another wheelstand gave the match to Liberman, who won with an 8.23/190. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #1 with a 7.46/191.88 at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. Unfortunately, he failed to make it to the finals. He lasted until the semifinals on February 16 at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He broke against Pat Foster at that race. The roles were reversed to the HRM Championships on March 16, when Foster broke a driveshaft in the final, and Allen motored to a 7.59/194.38 victory. He didn't back into this win as he qualified third with a 7.71 behind the two Mickey Thompson cars. A 7.67/193.96 advanced past the final round when Ronnie Runyan fouled. He singled in the second round with a 7.69/193.54 when Marv Eldridge failed to show. In the semis, a 7.71/190.67 beat Rusty Delling's 8.05. Another big win came on March 29 at the final OCIR All-Pro race. There he ran 7.45/194.38 over a fouling Ray Alley, and a semifinal 7.62/191.88 beat Rich Siroonian's 7.68/192. In the final, he again took on an M/T car; this time, it was Danny Ongais. A blown transmission ended the Mustang's chances, and Allen had another win. He took on Bill Lawton at Bill's home track, Connecticut, for a best-of-three-match race. Charlie won three straight and lowered the track record on every run. In the first race, a 7.61/193.54 beat Lawton's 7.90/175. He soloed with a 7.53/193.12 in the second race when Lawton had fuel pump problems. And a final run of 7.45/196.50 reset both ends of the track record. He set another track record while beating Tom McEwen at a match race at Suffolk on May 11, where a 7.29 was the new record. At Maple Grove, he beat Jim Liberman in another match race, where he set a 7.60 track record. He went back to Connecticut on May 25 for a match race against Lew Arrington. In the first race, a 7.67/184.80 beat Lew's 8.19/182. In the second race, a 7.99/188 by Brutus beat Allen's 8.30/164.86. Both were loaded for bear in the final, but a 7.73/188.88 by Allen beat Lew's 8.30/187 for the match win. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships, and a first-round 7.99/150.75 beat an out-of-shape Joe Black. Lawton got some revenge in the semifinals by taking a 7.56/194 win over Allen's 7.60/191.05. He had some problems at the NHRA Springnationals when the NHRA didn't receive his entry in time. However, luck was on his side when Doug Thorley, whose AMX had crashed three weeks before, gave Charlie his entry form. Thus, the car was qualified as an AMX in the entry blank. A 7.92/181.81 qualified eighth. As it was, he had trouble and withdrew from the competition. On June 28, he raced Bruce Larson at Budds Creek for a match race and lost two straight. On July 3, Allen was at Edgewater for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 7.37 that beat Tommy Grove. In the semifinals, while doing his burnout before racing "Jungle Jim," his motor let go, and Liberman soloed into the final. The following day he was at Suffolk for another eight-car show. He fouled in the first round, against Al Graeber, running an 8.93/190 on the loss. On July 12, he faced off against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" at US 131. Charlie won two straight, taking the first race with a 7.68/185.56 to Reyes' 7.78/182, and in the second race, the "Hawaiian" was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen just eased it through with an 8.49 to win the match. He got a rematch against Larson at Numidia Dragway, and this time he beat Larson's "US A-1" two straight. He set a 7.57 track record in the first race over Bruce's 7.66, and in the second race, he won, but no time was recorded. He competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, on August 2. In the first round, he blew a transmission, but his 9.45 still beat Don Biggers' 10.16. He lost to Randy Walls in round two. Allen was back in Connecticut on August 17 for a best-of-three-match race against Lawton. The two made three runs, and Allen won them all, clocking 8.47/181.80, 7.54/173.74, and 7.74/163.93. Bill's best was 7.70. A week later (August 24), he faced Ron Rivero in the "K&G" Mustang at the same track. Ron won the first race when Allen broke a radius rod, but after fixing it, he came back to win the next two races and the match. His times were 7.73/168.53 and 7.84/155.17. Notes: Charlie was still running the Dart on Jan 4 when he showed up at OCIR for the first All-Pro race. In the first round, he beat alternate Don Schumacher who broke a driveshaft with a 7.49/175.09. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 7.45/175.43 when Dave Beebe broke in the "Dodge Fever" car. Unfortunately, in the final against Gene Conway, Allen's transmission let go. |

Notes: On January 26, Charlie was at Irwindale in his Challenger for an eight-car show. He made it into the final by beating Dave Beebe's 7.73/186 in the first round, with a 7.67/179.78. In the semifinals, a 7.67/170.13 took out Dick Bourgeois' 7.95/193 in Don Cook's Corvette. In the final, he met Kenny Safford who was driving the "Mr. Norm" car for the first time. Safford got the win with a 7.49/196 over Allen's 7.54/191.88. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the third OCIR All-Pro race on February 22, he fouled in the first round, against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. He didn't do very well at the Bakersfield March Meet where he lost to Fred Goeske in the first round, of the eight-car show. York US 30 held an eight-car show on April 5 where all cars would make two runs and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. While Allen didn't run quick enough to make the final, he did win his two races. Kosty Ivanof's Camaro lost fire against him in the first race and his 8.35/163.04 won. In the second race, Bruce Larson fouled away a 7.71 against him and Charlie won with an 8.31/171.10. On April 12, he was at US 13 Delmar, Delaware, where he beat Sid Foster's new Mustang three straight. It was not without some issues as in the first race, Charlie lost a transmission, but still managed to win with a 10.22/125 as Sid got completely sideways and shut off to an 11.54/168.53. Allen won the second race with an 8.01/188.66 when the Mustang lost a trans and a third run of 7.94/182.92 sewed up the match when Foster blew an engine. He beat Clare Sanders at Connecticut in a best of three match where he set a 7.34 track record. He beat Pee Wee Wallace's "Virginian" 'Cuda at Maple Grove in a best of three match on May 30. He lost the first race with a 7.92/160.14 to Wallace's 7.70/202, but he came back to win the second and third races with times of 7.44/187.36 and 7.54/173.74. Allen was running well at Saginaw, Michigan, on June 7 for the Tri-City Manufacturer's Meet. It was an eight-car show and he won his first-round race with a 7.41/199.10 over Mike Burkhart while a semifinal 7.40/199.10 lost to Bryan Teal's 7.21/202. |

Notes: Here's an interesting one. On November 14, Allen drove either Gas Ronda's, or was it now, Dick Poll's Mustang at Irwindale. It was rumored to be a new team. At the race, Allen got past Jr. Brogdon, who had his chute release on the line, in the first round. In the second round, he lost a blower and the race to Dave Condit's LA Hooker at 7.68/153. |

Notes: Charlie's Charger was in the northwest for most of its existence 'cuz Charlie was in the Army at Fort Lewis. It ran constantly and won nearly every race all of 1971 except the NHRA WCS events - Jerry Ruth won all five. The Charger set the first Funny Car speed record over 220 that year, a 222.22 at Mission, B.C. Hard to forget that number. - Phil Elliott | Charlie Allen claimed both ends of the Funny Car record at 6.82/222.22. - NHRA | Ran 6.82 at Fremont 6/71 (National Record) |At the rain-delayed Fremont Northern Nationals, Allen qualified with a 7.71/142.85. But he was unable to make it back for the race's rain date. On May 1st, he was at Seattle for an eight-car show, but he broke a rear end in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Deer Park for the NHRA Division 6 race. Eventual winner Jerry Ruth's 7.11/204 beat his 7.17/196.92. He made it into the final at the next NHRA Division 6 race held at Bremerton on May 23. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.03. Only six cars showed, and in the first round, he soloed. In the semifinals, his 7.57/207.84 beat Glen Foster. He went up against Ruth in the final, and his car broke at half-track while Ruth bagged another one with a 6.78. Charlie won the KJR Drag Festival in Seattle on June 20. He beat Jerry Ruth in the final with a 6.81/221. |
