Notes: In the Fall of 1971 Jeb was a 17 year old high school senior at Bell High School in Bellflower, California. He became the third son in the Allen family to earn his top fuel license following in the footsteps of his older brothers Les and Ed. That fall Guy Allen, a successful building contractor, had Woody Gilmore build a 225 inch rear-engine chassis for his son that was fitted out with a 57' Chrysler 392 Hemi, a Tom Hanna body, Don Kirby paint and Kenny Youngblood lettering. Jeb and the new car made their competitive debut at Lions on November 13th running 6.59/218.44. The following weekend at the 1971 NHRA Supernationals Jeb qualified for the top fuel field at OMS running 6.64/221.67 before losing to low qualifier John Wiebe in the semifinals. When the event awards were given out Jeb and the "Praying Mantis" won "Best Appearing Car." |

Notes: Jeb Allen, at age 18, won the NHRA Summernationals in this car. This was the last Top Fuel car to cross the finish line, in competition, at Lions Dragway, a losing effort to Carl Olson in the final. Jeb ran a 6.38 and a bunch of 6.40s in that effort. Runner up to Flip Schofield at IHRA Dragway 42 in August 72. Note - this was the Allen family's first RE car, Woody chassis, initially powered by a 392, but soon switched to the late model hemi. 6.35 Tri-City, 6.66 Columbus, 6.33 Englishtown, 6.33 Indy. 6.46 NHRA Amarillo |

Notes: Allen started his season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere in January. His 6.51 qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He improved to 6.37 in round one, to beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.71, but in round two, he was a little late off the line, and his 6.52 was beaten by Don Moody's 6.53. He went to Pomona for the rain-delayed (twice) NHRA Winternationals. Traction was not there as his 7.145/221.67 qualified #19 in the 32-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Steve Carbone in the first round, 6.81/222 to 7.140/208.33. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #23, but he had to shut down with a bad magneto in the first round. Jeb was in Seattle in April for the Northwest Open. He ran well, going 6.31 in round one, and 6.16/238.09 (Top Speed) in round two over Herm Petersen. In the semifinals, he beat Gaines Markley with a 6.15. He faced Don Moody in the final. Don had set Low ET at 6.13, so the final was close. Allen's final round 6.31/233.16 finished runner-up to Moody's 6.28. Shortly after this, he won the Las Vegas Open. It was an eight-car field, and Jeb beat a tire-smoking Dave Russell in the semifinals with a 6.64. In the final, his 6.51/222.22 (Top Speed) beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.56 for the victory. In June, Allen was at Englishtown for a best-of-three match race against Clayton Harris. Jeb reset both ends of the track record in his first race over Clayton, running 6.16/240.64. He went on to win the match three straight with runs of 6.29/234.98 and a shutoff 7.10/209.79 when Harris fouled. He had an interesting outing at the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #12 with a 6.471/227.84. He beat Dale Funk's 6.62/222 in the first round, with a 6.495/220.58, and in round two, it seemed as if Jeb was on his way into the semifinals when he got the win light with a 6.706/221 (231?) over Marvin Schwartz's 6.790. But after their race, Marvin claimed that he had won, so a local TV station was filming the race by chance, and they reviewed it. Sure enough, Schwartz had led Allen through the beams, and he was awarded the win. Allen was at Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race near the end of June. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.28/231.95. His 6.73/152.80 advanced when Grant Stoms fouled in the opening round. But he failed to show on time for his semifinal race against Flip Schofield. On July 1st, he was in Denver, Colorado, for the Olympia National Open. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.84/209 advanced when Chip Woodall broke a fuel pump. But in the semifinals, his 7.04/161.29 fell to eventual winner Dan Richins' 6.77/194. At the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.149/237.86 behind Bill Wigginton's 6.03/238 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A first-round 6.309/222.77 beat Tom Raley's 6.66, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Schwartz. Jeb qualified #3 at NHRA Grand National Molson with a 6.312 (no speed recorded). In round one, he beat Terry Capp, 6.428/203.61 to 6.50/208, and beat a fouling Wigginton in round two (no times for either racer). Then it was Jeb's turn to foul in the final, handing the win to Pat Dakin at 6.29/226. John Wiebe hit Jeb at National Challenge 73, and both cars wrecked. He suffered burns on his hands. Jeb ran 6.338 at Tulsa National Challenge 73. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.14/228.42 at PRO NY National 8/74. - FY | Jeb did not qualify at the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). He qualified #7 at Bakersfield's 32-car show in March with a 6.22/230.17. A 6.44 in the first round, beat Leland Kolb, but he fouled against Larry Dixon in round two. The following week (March 17), he qualified #7 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.34/229.00, but lost in the first round, to Jim Murphy, 6.38/221 to 6.56/217. He was the third alternate for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus with a best of 6.371/231.14. Jeb qualified #13 at Sanair at 6.426/229.00, and beat a broken Graham Light in round one, with a 6.440/207.85. He lost to Gary Beck in round two, however, 5.94/242 to 6.35/218. Jeb qualified #16 at Indy at 6.187/235.60. But he fouled in round one, tossing away an otherwise close one to Dick Rosberg, 6.309/229.00 to Jeb’s 6.306/225.56. Jeb wrapped up his NHRA national event season at the World Finals/Supernationals at Ontario, where he finally found the fives, qualifying #3 at 5.955/233.76. He defeated a fouling Rance McDaniel in round one, 6.262/227.84 to 6.406/221.67, but fell to nemesis Gary Beck in round two. Jeb’s otherwise solid 6.049/233.76 lost to Beck’s new national speed record blast of 5.940 at 248.61. Earlier in the season, Jeb ran 6.07 at Portland. |

Notes: Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. AKA Preying Mantis. | Allen started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for its East vs. West meet. Six cars were to run, with the winner of the event determined by race wins. In Jeb's first race, his off-pace 6.50/215 lost to a motor-blowing Gary Beck who ran 6.00/212. He won his second race with a 6.27/229.59 over Marvin Graham, who lost a blower on the run. In his third race, Allen's car broke and slowed to a 6.77/151.26 loss to James Warren's 6.02/215. He was supposed to race at Fremont's East vs. West race the next day(Feb.22), but the engine damage kept him from competing there. He also did not run at the Bakersfield March Meet or the NHRA Gatornationals. He was at the NHRA Division Seven opener held at Fremont on March 28. There he qualified #15 with a 6.28/227.27. In round one, his slightly improved 6.20/217.39 beat Arley Langlo. Jeb continued to improve in round two, where his 6.14/232.55 beat Rick Uribe. But in the semifinals, his off-pace 6.67/201.79 lost to Dave Braskett's 6.14/231. The NHRA Division 6 opener was run at Seattle on May 2. Allen qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.22/225.56. An opening round 6.25/225.00 beat Jim Barnard's 6.71/194. In round two, his 6.72/188.67 lost to Bob Mitchell's 6.42/204. The rest of the race was rained out until May 9. On May 8th, Allen was in Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.02 qualified #2 behind Beck's 5.99. An opening round 6.18/232.55 beat Herm Petersen's identical 6.18/235. But the run was costly as Jeb hurt the motor and could not return for his semifinal match against Hank Johnson. He was at the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus, where he made six passes, attempting to qualify, but his 6.29 best left him as the second alternate for the show. He always had good luck at Englishtown, and '76 was no different. His 6.07/234.37 qualified #8 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he got a solo in round one, when Grant Stoms was unable to run. A 6.13/210.77 advanced. In round two, his 6.13/227.27 beat Beck's 6.66/161. Allen improved to 6.06/228.42 to beat Dale Funk's similar 6.06/238 in the semifinals. This moved him into the finals against Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. The two had a good race, but Tharp won his first NHRA national event with a 5.99/244 over Jeb's best of the weekend,6.04/231.36. |

Notes: Hometown confirmed by Jeb on Summernationals TV coverage. Ran 5.89 at Union Grove. | Allen started the '77 season by running 6.02/238.72 at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline on 1/14/77, and then by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #2 with a 6.29. Jeb improved to a 6.20/228.42 in the first round, over Bill Selley and in round two, a 6.25 beat Jerry Ruth's 6.31. He went up against Ruth again in the semifinal when Clive Skilton broke after winning his second-round race and was unable to run the semifinal. Ruth got back in on the "break rule." The two ran again with the same outcome; this time Jeb won with a 6.34 over Ruth's 6.38. In the final, Allen faced the Rodeck powered car of Rance McDaniel. Rance ran a 6.49/213, but Jeb took the win with a 6.36/213.27. He made the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #8, but he lost to Bruce Walker in the first round. His next strong showing came at Tulsa on May 1 for the AHRA Springnationals. Jeb qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.43/222.22. He beat Dale Wilch and Frank Bradley to meet with Tom Dumbell in the final. Jeb got his second AHRA victory of the young season and set Low ET of the meet with a 6.33. Another AHRA win came at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals in June. Allen's 6.54/218.98 qualified #3 in the field, but he improved to 6.45/215.32 in the first round, over Wilch, and in the semifinals he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.29/231.37 to beat Dumbell's 6.51/185. He had heavy competition in the final as he faced Gary Beck. Beck ran a strong 6.42/230, but it wasn't enough to stop Jeb's winning 6.34/229.01. A week later (June 12) he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.12/231.32 qualified #12 and in round one, a 6.20/229.59 lost to Pat Dakin's identical 6.20 at 227. Jeb then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he went on to win his first IHRA title. It took two weeks to run as rain postponed the race from June 19 until June 26. But for Jeb, it was worth the wait. He qualified #2 with a 6.05 just behind Paul Longenecker's 6.02. These two would work their way through the sixteen-car field to meet in the final. Allen was consistent, running 6.01/237 in the first round, to beat Paul Romine's quicker, but later 6.00/233. He set a 5.96 track record at 229.59 in round two to beat Mike Palmer and in the semifinals, his 6.03/216.86 took care of John Speelman. Going against Longenecker for the title, Allen ran 6.00/239.00 to beat Paul's 6.09/239. He was runner-up to Don Garlits at Martin, Michigan's Memorial Weekend race. He always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown and '77 was no different. A 5.85/229.00 qualified #2 behind Shirley Muldowney's 5.77. Once again the two Low ET qualifiers would meet in the final. Jeb had an easy 6.39 win in the first round, when Jeg Coughlin lost fire on the line. In round two, a 5.99/223 beat Ron Attebury's off-pace 6.46. In the semifinals, he beat Lee Weller driving the Jim and Allison Lee car with a 6.04/209. Unfortunately, Allen's car broke in the final, and Shirley soloed for the win with a 6.02/234. He went to Milan Dragway on July 24 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.13 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Garlits. Jeb had a supercharger explode on the line and Garlits advanced with a solo pass of 6.05/232. His next stop was at Dragway 42 at West Salem, Ohio, for the AHRA Grandnationals. Allen qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/208.81. He beat Lou Novotny in round one, with a 6.29/221.13, but in the semifinals, he fouled against Bradley and shut off. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 6.18 qualified #5. The event was an eight-car show; that meant that he ran low qualifier, Muldowney, in round one. Shirley had been the only 5-second qualifier at the race and her 6.04 in their race put Jeb on the trailer. He had another first-round loss at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #4 with a 5.98/232.55 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he faced a poorly qualified (#12) Beck. But in their first-round race, Gary improved to a 5.97 to beat Jeb's 6.00. Allen was in a position to win the AHRA Top Fuel Points Championship, and he went to Spokane on August 21 to try to win it. Only seven cars showed for the eight-car field so qualifying was not a problem. In the first round, Jeb ran 6.26/222.76 to beat Jerry Ruth's 6.34/198.22. In the semifinals, opponent Maynard Garritty lost fire and Allen advanced to the final with an easy 7.00/129.31 run. He faced Beck in the final and Beck had been running well. He had set Low ET at 6.05 in his semifinal win. The two had a good race with Gary's 6.24/227.00 getting the victory over Jeb's 6.32/198.22, but Allen still had enough points to be awarded AHRA's Top Fuel Crown. The next event run was the NHRA US Nationals. It was still a 32-car show and Jeb qualified #9 with a 6.00. He beat Larry Bucher in round one, with a 6.10/213. Another 6.10 at 211 beat Garlits' 6.25/238 in round two, but in the third round, he broke, advancing Richard Tharp's 6.16/239 into the semifinals. The year was beginning to wind down, but he still had time to win the PRO National Challenge race at Union Grove on September 11. It was a sixteen-car show and Allen beat Skilton, Chris Karamesines (with a 6.03/225), and Ron Correnti, who shut off with a 5.96/223. He faced Bradley in the final, and he ran his best of eliminations, a 5.89/234, to beat Frank's runner-up 6.14/201. At the NHRA Fallnationals, a 6.00 qualified #11, and he fell off to 6.23 in a first-round loss to Graham Light's 6.11. He had a disappointing end to his season when he went to Ontario for the NHRA World Finals. His best of 6.03 failed to qualify for the race. |

In round two, a 6.46/223 beat Dick LaHaie, but in the semifinals, his 6.41/226 lost to Paul Longenecker's 6.36/212. At the NHRA Winternationals, the above-mentioned times qualified #10. A first-round 6.06/236 lost to Kelly Brown's 5.94/235. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #8 with a 6.01 but failed to reach the finals. Jeb did not run at the Gatornationals. He was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he qualified #10, but he lost to Don Garlits' 6.23 in the first round, with a 6.36. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.98/231.95 qualified #7. He beat Jeg Coughlin in the first round, with a 6.05/231.26, but he lost in round two when he shut off to an 8.37/106.75 against Richard Tharp. He qualified #1 at the IHRA Springnationals with a 5.93 (Low ET) at 231.95. A first-round 5.98/225.56 beat Marvin Schwartz and a round two 6.34 beat an ailing Clayton Harris. Longenecker beat Allen in the semifinal with a 6.12/232 to Jeb's 6.16/231.95. On July 4, Allen was at the AHRA Ozark Nationals, where he used a 6.74/199.11 to qualify #7 in the eight-car show. He lost to Gary Beck's 6.36/219 in the first round, with a shut off 6.71/163. He took his third NHRA national event victory at the Summernationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.96 and ran 6.10 in round one, 5.93 in round two, and 6.02 in the semifinals. He was paired against Beck in the final, but Gary broke, and Jeb soloed to the win with a 15.81/56.46. He went to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals the following week (July 23). A 6.10 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, and a round one 6.11/205.01 beat Don Reed. In the semifinals, Don Garlits' 5.96/236 beat his early shut off 6.15/199.56. Allen qualified #1 at the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., with a 5.94. A first-round 6.01/209.79 beat LaHaie's 6.20/211. In the second round, he and Bill Pryor ran 6.04 (Jeb at 239.36), but Pryor won. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The same thing happened at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals, where he again failed to make the show. He ran well at Indy for the US Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinals. Ran best of 5.99/233 in eliminations at Indy 1978 after a 5.89/238.09 qualifier. Runner up to Don Garlits. |

Notes: Jeb qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.918 (speed unavailable), but he broke against Gary Ormsby in the first round. He qualified #6 at Baton Rouge at 6.00/243.47 but lost to Jeg Coughlin in round one, 6.08/243 to 6.17/234.37. Allen was having a bit of a rough time with his combination near the end of the season. Jeb qualified #14 at Columbus at 6.06/235.60. In round one, he beat Gary Beck, 6.389/222.22 to 6.48/238, but lost to Johnny Abbott in round two, 6.00/234 to 6.254/218.97. Jeb rebounded at Englishtown with a win at the Summernationals. He qualified #8 at 5.968/225.56 and beat Bobby Hilton in round one, 6.13/230.17 to 9.81. IN round two, he again took out Gary Beck, 5.96/231.36 to 10.03/63. Jeb defeated Bruce Hagestad in the semis, 6.06/231.95 to 6.22/219. Dave Settles had a bit of a performance advantage in each round, but he broke in the final, and Jeb took a 6.17/227.84 victory. But right after that, he was the first alternate at the Sanair Grandnationals (times unavailable but #8 was a 6.13). He barely qualified for the 32-car field at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. During Thursday's qualifying, he ran 6.12. A pair of 6.17s later backed that up. A last-ditch attempt to make the show came Sunday morning, where his 6.011/235.60 got him the #30 spot. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.922/237.46 to beat Connie Kalitta's 6.06/212. It was Jeb's first five-second pass since July. Gary Beck had to shut off against him in round two due to tire shake, and Allen advanced with a 6.066/234.98. In the third round, his 6.023/240.00 got around Dave Uyehara, whose car broke at half-track, slowing to 6.30/174. Jeb slowed to 6.201/223.32 in the semifinal and lost to Johnny Abbott's 5.99/241. He then failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals (6.039/234.98 first alternate) and Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals (sixth alternate, times unavailable but #16 was 6.21). Did Jeb run 5.90 somewhere? Photo from 1979. |

Notes: Iron block. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1980. Also 5.95 at NHRA Cajuns, 5.92/233.76 at NHRA Englishtown, 5.91 at NHRA Indianapolis. | Allen started the '80 season with a runner-up finish to Frank Bradley at the AHRA Winternationals. He then went to Pomona, where a 5.99/245.90 qualified #12 for the NHRA Winternationals. He lost to upstart John Kimble's 5.96/241 in the first round, with a 6.19/233.16. Jeb ran OK at the Bakersfield March Meet, beating Doug Kerhulas in the first round, with a 6.19 but losing soon after that. He took his first win of the year at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.87. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, and in round two, he beat Frank Bradley. In the semifinals, he beat Don Garlits' off pace 7.36 with a 5.84/239.36 to make the final. In the final, he met low qualifier and track record-setter (5.71), Gary Beck. Jeb stepped up to a 5.80/247.25 to beat Beck's 5.92/236. Allen went to Darlington for IHRA's version of the Winternationals and qualified #2 with a 6.11. In the first round, he lost a close race when Richard Tharp's 6.02/243 beat his 6.03/238.72. He won the IHRA Dixie Nationals, stopping Bob Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. On April 27, he qualified #1 with a track record 5.91 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He beat Steve Stephens in the first round, with a 5.95/240, and in the semifinal, another 5.95 at 239 advanced to the finals when Jeg Coughlin broke. Once again, he met Beck in the final, but Gary reversed their finishing order from the Gatornationals. Beck's 5.93/239 took the victory. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4, Jeb qualified #3 with a 6.13/223.88. He beat Charlie Greer's 6.49/213 in the first round, with a 6.01/231.36. In the semifinals, a 5.99/238.09 beat Bob Simmons' 6.51. He took the win in the final with a 6.01/238.09 over a tire-smoking Kerry Sweigert. The next Division 1 race was taken by Allen as well. He did have to survive a close 6.09/240.64 (Low ET and Top Speed) first-round race against Richard Tharp's 6.11/234, but in the final, he beat Dick LaHaie for another victory. He then went to Rockingham and set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.90/245 while winning the IHRA Pro-Am Championships over Mark Oswald. The IHRA Springnationals were postponed by rain and were run on May 25 instead of May 18. Jeb qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.02. He stepped up in the first round, against low qualifier Tharp, but his 5.95/242 still finished second to Richard's 5.91/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. At the NHRA Springnationals, Allen qualified #4 with a 5.96/234.98. But in the first round, he shut off on the line with no pressure. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Jeb qualified #6 in the eight-car show, and he singled in the first round, when Bob Noice left the line before the 'tree was actuated. In the semifinals, he lost to Beck's 6.00/232 with a 6.18/214.28. He always ran well at Englishtown, and in '80, it was no different. A 5.87/246.57 qualified #2, and he worked his way to the final by beating Jody Smart in round one, with a 5.90/236.84 to Smart's 5.97/241. He got lucky in round two when he lost a rear end but still won when Larry Brown lost an engine. After changing the rear, he returned in the semifinals and ran 5.92 to beat Marvin Graham's 6.02. In the final, he faced Dick LaHaie. The final was a good one, but Dick got his first NHRA national event win with a 5.95/235 over Jeb's 6.04/238.72 runner-up bid. |

Notes: Jeb's 5.628 at Gainesville was not backed up but was the first time someone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' 5.637 from Ontario 1975. Received a 254.01 mph national record at Bandimere because NHRA was still factoring times for the mile-high race plant. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. Jeb's 250.69 at Gainesville was the 7th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Jeb won the 1981 NHRA Championship by 31 points over Gary Beck. | Jeb was the only driver that qualified for every NHRA national event in '81. He had switched to a 10-71 supercharger with a larger fuel pump and a hotter magneto for the season. His season started at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing, where he won Top Fuel with a 5.86. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.86/246.57. A 5.87/245 beat Tony Ceraolo in round one, and he followed that up with a 5.84/245 single in the second round when Mike Tarter was unable to run. He was winning rounds but was burning pistons on almost every run. Allen stated that with his new engine set-up, the air/fuel mixture wasn't right. In the semifinals, his 5.86 beat Dave Settles' 5.94, and he grabbed the win with a final round 5.92/229.59 that beat Marvin Graham's 6.01/236. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #6, running 5.98/241.28 for the spot. Unfortunately, rain delayed the race one week, and Allen could not run the rain date as it fell on the same date as the NHRA Gatornationals (March 15). Jeb made quite a splash at Gainesville as he ran a 5.62/250.69 to qualify first. The 5.62 was the first time anyone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' historic 5.63 from '75. He failed to back up the time for a new NHRA record as in the first round, his 5.80/248.61 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.79/243. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but rain-interrupted again, and the race was postponed one week until March 28. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/242 and a first-round 6.04/231 beat alternate Paul Romine's 6.20/223. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.39/209 that lost to Jody Smart's 6.05/243. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Atlanta. It was a tough show to make as it was only an eight-car field. Jeb ran 5.86/236.84 to qualify #6. He beat Graham in the first round, with a 5.92/236.84, but a 6.00/241 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.97/236. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Allen qualified #3 with a 5.83 and a first-round 5.85/249.30 (Top Speed of the meet) beat Connie Kalitta. In the semifinals, he ran a good 5.89, but he finished behind Graham's even better 5.82. Another big win came at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/252.10 (Top Speed). His 6.00/247.93 beat Mike Tarter in the first round, while a 5.92 in the semifinals beat Mark Oswald. In the final, he ran Richard Tharp in the "Candies & Hughes" car. Tharp smoked the tires, and Allen ran 5.99/248.61 for the victory. A week later (May 24), he was back in the winner's circle at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. There he qualified #2 with a 5.87 and a first-round 5.99 beat a tire-smoking Graham. Tharp also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and Jeb's 6.02/243.90 advanced into the final. There he ran Terry Capp, and both had traction issues with Allen's 6.11/233.16 coming out on top over Capp's 7.15. Things didn't go as well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.93/243.90 in qualifying placed him #7 in the field, but in the first round, his car broke, giving Jim Head an easy run into the second round. After that, it was off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.93 at a track record speed of 244.56. A first-round 5.95/242.58 beat Capp, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.92 at 243.24 to beat Johnny Abbott's 5.96/238. He faced David Pace driving the "Carroll Brothers" car in the final, and a 5.94/243.24 got Jeb another victory. |

Notes: Jeb debuted his new car at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 30. It took four attempts, but he finally qualified for the eight-car show in the #7 position with a 5.89/236.22. He lost to Lucille Lee's 5.97/238 in the first round, with a 6.08/237. At the 1982 NHRA Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio. Qualified 4th at 5.80/221.13. Defeated Jim Barnard in round one, but was a no-show against Lucille Lee in next round. (Lee wound up runner-up to Shirley Muldowney in first NHRA all-female final). On July 4, he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, his 5.89 lost to eventual winner Connie Kalitta's 5.79. He was runner-up at the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.713 and in the first round, his 5.79 beat Dwight Salisbury. Another 5.79 in round two got him into the semifinals where he beat Lee. In the final, he was the underdog despite his string of 5.70s as he came up against Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car that had earlier reset the NHRA Top Fuel record to 5.61. Allen tried hard, running a great 5.73/246.57 in the final, but he lost to Oswald's 5.70/252. At the end of July, he was at Bandimere Speedway in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.00 and he made his way into the final by beating Bruce Hagestad and Lee in the semifinals with a 6.17/232.55 over her 6.40/236. In the final he faced Salisbury and Dwight stopped him with a track record 5.90 that beat Jeb's 6.12/235.60 runner-up effort. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August, he qualified last in the eight-car field with a 5.81/245.90. He lost to Oswald in the first round. On September 6, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 5.73/238.72 qualified #10, setting up a first-round meeting with eventual winner Shirley Muldowney, which the lady won with a 5.56. Jeb's best ET was the 5.713/246.57 at Englishtown (his best speed came in eliminations). He also rean 245.90 at Brainerd. Where did he run 252.10? |

Notes: Jeb started the year in this car, but replaced it before the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.80/244.56. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Read. Jim had problems and slowed to 6.78/136 while Allen advanced with a 5.86/236.84. In the second round, he had a close race against Connie Kalitta that saw his 6.07/238.09 beat Kalitta's 6.09/237. In the semifinals, Jeb had problems getting traction and his 7.16/132 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.87/242. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.88/241. In the first round, he got around Gary Beck's ailing car with a 6.02, but in round two, his quicker 6.13/224.99 lost to Kalitta's holeshot 6.15. He made a stop at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet where his 5.79/235.60 qualified #4. But he lost to Butch Blair in the first round, of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where eventual winner Jim Barnard beat him. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta featured only eight-car PRO fields and Jeb's best of 5.85/242.58 left him as the first alternate for the show. Jeb sold the car to Kurt Flack. |
