Notes: Per Brian Lohnes' YouTube video (https://youtu.be/0elwDUylXdM?si=IE-xP4I_vSQojqZt), the car was a blown nitromethane fuel-burning funny car, the second-heaviest ever run. The car ran in the 8-second range at around 160 mph and performed better once a windshield was installed, allowing air to flow over the roof and keep the front end on the track. |

Notes: Gary was low qualifier with a 7.64 on July 12 at Carlsbad for the NHRA Points race. In the first round, he slowed to a 7.80/193 that lost to eventual winner Jack Jones' 7.69/200. On July 20, he was at Lions for the PDA Championships, where he qualified #2 behind the "Freight Train's" 7.55 with a 7.61/194.38. He competed at Irwindale's Grand Prix race on October 5. It featured an eight-car field and his 7.77 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Muravez, driving the "Freight Train." Cochran tried hard in their race, but his 7.76/189.46 couldn't beat the "Train's" 7.59/191. |

Notes: Ran 6.70 Track record at Lions, 6.75 at Carlsbad. | Cochran was one of fifteen cars that attempted to qualify at an eight-car show at Lions on April 12. He qualified #1 with a 6.70/225.56, tying the track ET record held by John Mulligan. His 6.89/189.47 beat Gerry Glenn's 6.96/222 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in round one. Unfortunately, his rear end blew in the semifinals, and he slowed to 8.17/100.39, which lost to Tom McEwen's 6.87/217. He was back at Lions on April 19 for another eight-car show. He qualified #5 with a 6.81. In the first round, he picked up to a 6.75/216.86 that beat Ron Manke's 6.78. A semifinal 6.90/222.22 beat Tommy Allen's off-pace 7.27/197. In the final, he was up against Rick Stewart, driving for Bill Crossley. Gary got the victory with a 6.84 over Rick's 7.06. He took another win at an eight-car show at Irwindale on May 3. There, he got around a fouling Glenn Woosley in the first round, while in the semifinals, he advanced when Manke was disqualified for running over the lights. In the final, he got his third easy win in a row when James Warren fouled against him, and he ran 18.81 to take the win. He was back at Lions on May 10 for another eight-car show. A 6.78 qualified #6 in the field. Bob Williams fouled against him in the first round, and Cochran advanced with a 6.79/217.39. A 6.93/205.47 in the semifinals lost to Manke's 6.96/198. OCIR held a big sixteen-car show on May 17, and Cochran made it into the final there, too. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Dave McKenzie, smoked the tires, but Gary's 7.31/218.44 came out on top. In round two, his 7.16/226.13 (Top Speed) advanced over Wayne King. In the semis, his 7.24/225.00 beat Joe Lee. This put him in the final with Kelly Brown in Lou Baney's Ford-powered car. The race never came off as Cochran lost oil pressure and shut off on the line, giving Kelly a solo for the win. Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 24. Cochran qualified, but in the first round, his 7.35 was beaten by Hank Westmoreland's 7.20. Gary qualified #5 at the big 32-car PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 with a 6.87. He picked up to a second-round 6.76 over Butch Maas, and in round three, he set Top Speed at 225.56 while beating John Mulligan. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Dixon. Cochran was at Lions for an eight-car show on July 26, but a first-round 6.97/218.97 lost to Warren's 6.78/226. |

Notes: Gary Cochran started the year with a runner-up finish to John Wiebe at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. He qualified #1 and in the first round, his 6.89/204.08 beat James Warren who got crossed up and shut off. In round two, Don Prudhomme got out of shape against him and crossed the center line. Gary moved on with a 6.88/221.12. A 7.05 in the semifinals beat Don Argee. He qualified #13 with a 6.90 at the NHRA Winternationals on February 1, but lost early. Jan 4 at OCIR's first All-Pro race, Gary was runner-up again, this time he fouled against Joe Lee in the final. He had run a first-round 6.83/223.23 over Dwight Salisbury and a semifinal 6.81/222.77 over Dick Rosberg. At Irwindale on January 26, he continued his runner-up role with Gerry Glenn's 6.84/216 in the Atlas Oil Tool car beating his 6.96/219.50 in the final. His speed was tops for the event. On February 15 for the Fremont Northern Nats, he took a first-round loss to Prudhomme's 6.55/220 he his 6.85/215.30. Cochran won the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 22, singling for the win when Don Cook was shut off on the line with an oil leak. Gary qualified thirteenth with a 6.95 at Bakersfield on March 8. A first-round 6.96/196.08 got him into the second round where Jim Dunn's 6.81/222.22 beat his 7.08/201.78. Dunn seemed to have Gary's number as on March 28 for the final OCIR All-Pro race, Dunn again beat Gary in the second round with a holeshot 6.79/211 over Cochran's 6.78/223.88. April 11 at Irwindale for an eight-car meet, Gary's 6.90/215.30 in the final wasn't good enough as Dunn's 6.78/222.22 went on to win. Gary qualified third with a 6.90 and ran a first-round 6.87/209.30 and a semifinal 6.94/183 before losing in the final. May 2 at Irwindale for another eight-car show, he qualified fourth with a 6.96 and ran 6.87/222.76 and 6.84/216.86 to make it to the final against (guess who?) Dunn again. This time the roles were reversed with Cochran's 6.86/224.42 nipping Jim's 6.87/202.76. OCIR held a sixteen-car race on May 16 and Gary's first-round 6.83/201.79 beat low qualifier (6.74) Dunn's ailing car. A single in the second round led to a 6.77/210.28 defeat of Billy Tidwell in the semis. In the final Gary faced James Warren and fouled. NHRA held its Division 7 Points race at Irwindale on May 23 and Cochran again ran well. He first met Dunn in round one, but singled with a 7.02/193 when Jim lost oil pressure and shut off. He had another easy run in round two when Don Moody fouled. But then in the semis against Jim Davis, Gary fouled away a Low ET of the meet, 6.82/199.10. He attempted to qualify at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, but his best of 6.91/208.33 failed to make the show. At the second annual March of Dimes race on June 20 at OCIR, Gary fouled against Moody in the first round. Still at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships, Gary made it into the semis against Dave Uyehara, but his engine soured and a 17.28 was no match for Dave's 6.99/223. The next day at Irwindale for the Fourth of July Championships, Gary put it all together for a big win. A 6.86/198.66 won the first-round race and a Low ET shot at 6.84/207.84 put him in the final where his 6.85/214.28 beat Carl Olson's 6.96/207.84. At the AHRA All-American at Lions on July 11, Gary's first-round 6.82/206.42 again beat Olson (6.99/220.58). But Rick Ramsey's 6.71/218 beat Gary's 6.80/212.76 in round two. At the 32-car PDA US Championships at OCIR on July 25, Cochran waded through three rounds of competition to end up in the semifinals matched against Steve Carbone. Gary's 6.97/214.28 lost to Carbone's 6.76/221.13. At Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships on August 1, Gary qualified eleventh and beat Larry Dixon's 6.84/207 in round one, with a 6.93/205.46. A second round 6.95/201.78 lost to Don Moody (6.84/209.78). August 15 had OCIR run its third annual Anniversary Race. Gary's 6.83/207.85 beat Don Moody (6.84/218.44) in the first round, before losing with a 6.79/213.27 to Billy Tidwell's 6.74/223.88 in Mike Kuhl's car in round two. On October 3, Irwindale held its 32-car Grand Prix. Gary ran 6.96/210.76 and 6.91/212.26 in the first two rounds before meeting Warren in round three and fouling. At the NHRA Supernationals on November 22, he qualified with a 6.82, but he lost to Richard Tharp in the first round. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.780/210.77. |

Notes: Beat Don Garlits in RED debut. Gary failed to qualify at the first OCIR All-Pro race, but at Lions for the opening AHRA Grand American race, he more than made up for it. He qualified with a 6.61 and then beat Don Cook in round one, with a 6.74/196.07. He cut a good light in the second round, and his 6.79/208.33 beat Chris Karamesines' quicker 6.69/222. In the semifinal, Cochran's 6.73/218.97 lost to Don Moody's 6.63, but Moody hurt his engine on the run and could not return for the final, so Cochran got back in on the "break rule.” He faced "Big Daddy" Don Garlits in his new rear-engine car. Gary won with a 6.58/217.91 over Garlits' 6.66/225. He was driving Carl Casper's car at the second OCIR All-Pro race, and he beat Garlits in the final there again. He was not in the field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, not sure if he skipped this event or if he failed to qualify. The bump was only 7.03, so I would guess he did not attend. He was back driving Casper's car at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he took another victory over a 32-car field. The Bakersfield March Meet was another show he competed at in Carl's car. On March 20, he was in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Tom McEwen at Lions. He won the first race with his 6.63/216.34 nipping McEwen's 6.62/223. In the second race, Gary fouled away a 6.73. In the final race, McEwen smoked the tires, but Cochran lost a rod and the match. The last OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27. Gary lost to Wiebe in the first round, when he had problems and shut down. |

Notes: Going back through my scrapbook stuff, it has me driving Carl Casper's "Young American" to a track record 6.56 at 224.43 at OCIR on January 24/1971. That was the second consecutive week that Garlits lost in the final round in his new rear-engined creation. first week was at Lions at the Grand American. TC said he was extremely pissed. Ya think? <g> — Gary Cochran | Carl Casper's original Young American FED sits in the Kruse Museum (Rick Howard photo), Auburn, Indiana (as of 2010). | Gary was at OCIR for the second All-Pro race on January 24. There were 34 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Gary qualified easily enough and in the first round, his 6.59/214.79 beat James Warren's 6.76/216. In the semifinals, he set a new track record 6.56 at 224.43 that beat Jim Paoli. The 6.59 was within the 2% for a back up. Ironically, Paoli had set Low ET with a 6.55 in the first round, but he was unable to back it up. Cochran faced Don Garlits new rear-engine car in the final and another 6.59/223.88 gave him the victory over Don's 6.62/223. He got another win with this car when he won the third OCIR All-Pro race on February13. In the opening round his 6.60/225.00 beat John Wiebe's 6.65/232. In the semifinals, Dwight Salisbury shut off and Gary's 6.83/198.67 advanced. His final round opponent was Don Moody and Cochran's 6.61/229 beat Moody's 6.70/226. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field and Gary qualified with a 7.10. He picked up to 6.83/213.76 in the first round, over Marvin Schwartz and an 8.09/109.89 advanced in round two when Fred Farndon fouled. He got another easy run in round thee when Dave Russell failed to fire and a 7.09 advanced. His competition continued to have trouble when in the semifinals, Don Ewald lost a clutch. Cochran kept his foot in it this time and ran 6.79/207.36. He faced Chris Karamesines for the money and the "Greek" was running well. He had run a best of 6.68 in eliminations and in his semifinal ran he ran 6.75/211. But in the final Chris had problems and shut off to 7.29/137 while Cochran picked up the win with a 6.74/218.96. Early in March he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified with a 6.91, but a 6.87/218 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 6.72/217. |

But in the semifinals, eventual winner Jerry Ruth ran 6.04/233 to beat his 6.18/233. Gary was at Sacramento on June 19 for the second NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.15/230.18. Notes: A strong contender in the 1978 All American Funny Car Series. Won the first race of the 1978 season at I-20 Raceway (7.29/193.96) and finished runner-up five more times during the 1979 season. This performance gave Smokey the Bear enough points to finish runner-up in the series. Texas Gary Cochran (not "Mr. C" from California). Runner at Jackson, MS, Manhattan, KS, Colorado Springs, CO 5.37 127, and twice at San Antonio. Ran the first six in AAFCC action. |
