Notes: Gary was in Seattle in May for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. He qualified #4 with a 9.26/148.43, but in the first round, of eliminations, he shut down to 11.24 in a loss to Pete Kost's 9.23. The only NHRA national event was the Seattle Fallnationals this year. He qualified #12 at 9.312/144.23. Won round one when Warren Johnson did not show (9.52/142) but lost round two to Bob Glidden, 8.95 to a 10-second shut-off for Coe. Formerly listed 8.87/154.37 for this year, but I believe that was a misrepresentation of the 8.86/153 from Seattle 1976 in the Pinker & Aldridge car. |

Notes: This well-engineered twin engine gas rail first debuted at Santa Ana on Oct. 30. The front engine was a 296 cubic inch flathead Merc and the rear motor, located right behind the driver seat was a 264 cubic inch Merc flathead. It was a four-wheel drive setup. Co-owner Don Karraker was in the driver's seat for its first outing. Karraker snagged the win in the gas rail class and turned 123.45 mph, the second fastest time of the meet. A week later on Nov. 6 at Santa Ana, Coehlo drove the dragster to top eliminator honors, clocking 126.90 mph. On Nov. 20 at Santa Ana, Coehlo snagged gas rail class honors with 125 mph. At Santa Ana on Nov. 27, it swept top time, top eliminator, and gas rail class trophies. It ran its fastest speed to date with 128.50 mph. On Dec. 11 at Santa Ana, Coelho snagged the gas rail class win with 128.50 mph. The next week at Santa Ana on Dec. 18, he took another gas rail class win with 126 mph. Notes: Coelho ran the same in-line twin-engined configuration on his dragster at the beginning of the 1956 racing season that he had run in 1955. The driver was squeezed between two flathead Merc engines, one 296 inch motor fore and a 264 inch motor aft. The car employed two transmissions, effectively a four-wheel drive setup. Just as in 1955, he raced primarily at Santa Ana in the early season. He had successes at Santa Ana on Jan. 8 (132.32 mph for gas rail class win, 128.20 mph for top eliminator), Feb. 5 (lost to Cox & Sanders for gas rail class), Feb. 12 (top time and gas rail class win with 132.45 mph, blew transmission in top eliminator runner-up), Feb. 19 (blew clutch in gas rail class loss to Sanders & Cox rail), Mar. 4 (gas rail class win with 129.87 mph, but top eliminator runner-up), and Mar. 11 (blew a rod after turning 131.57 mph). With these so-so results, Coelho decided he would run on fuel on Apr. 22 at Santa Ana. He turned 137 mph but blew a transmission on the line in the final run for top eliminator. He returned to running gas on Apr. 29 at Santa Ana, winning the gas rail class with 123.45 mph. On May 6 at Santa Ana, he took gas rail class honors and top time with 123.45 mph. He was runner-up in the top eliminator race. At Santa Ana on May 20, he won the gas rail class with 125 mph but was runner-up in top eliminator when he experienced shifting difficulties. Coelho decided if he was to remain competitive, it was time for a major change. He had been watching and learning from Red Henslee, who ran high gear only. Using the high gear-only setup and other changes, he copped top time of the Santa Ana meet on Aug. 26 with 146.34 mph. Experimenting further, Coelho removed the smaller flathead Merc in the rear and replaced it with Ron Korn's injected 361-inch Chrysler engine. He brought it to Santa Ana on Sep. 23 for testing. When he was finally able to synchronize the performance of both engines, he ran a head-turning 152.23 mph. He thus became the second driver of a twin-engine dragster to go over 150 mph. His best time was 9.97 seconds. At Santa Ana on Sep. 30, he ran another 9.97 seconds at 149.74 mph. On Oct. 28, Coelho towed the dragster to Lions for its 2-day anniversary meet on Oct. 27-28. He shattered the long-standing elapsed time record with a fabulous 9.79 seconds. He also clocked top time with 153.06 mph. He was getting the hang of running high gear-only. He returned to Lions on Nov. 11 with two 354-inch Chrysler engines, courtesy of Ken Droesbeke and Ronald Korn. The result was spectacular. He broke his recent track record with 9.62 seconds and turned 153.58 mph. Satisfied with the results, he left before eliminations. He returned to Lions on Nov. 18, but he was sidelined when he lost a bearing in the rear engine. On Dec. 16 at Lions, he scored the day's top time of 148.72 mph before blowing the rear engine. Notes: At Lions on Mar. 17, Coelho got the top speed of the day with 136.57 mph in his dual '56 Chrysler-motored dragster before fouling his starter gears. In one of his final appearances before selling his dragster to Mickey Thompson, Coelho snagged top time and A/D class wins with 144.69 mph on Mar. 24 at Lions. That run came only minutes after his pit crew finished replacing a broken front axle. On his final outing at Lions on Mar. 31, he turned 139.75 mph to win the A/D class. He then sold it to Mickey Thompson, who reconfigured the fore-aft engine set-up to two front-motored twin Chryslers that ran 294 mph at Bonneville in 1958.
