Notes: Won Top Gas at Bakersfield for the second year in a row. | Gordon was at National Trail on July 12 for a match race against Tony Nancy. Gordon warmed up with an 8.63, which was good enough for a new gas dragster track record. The match race never took place because it rained, and the race was cancelled. He was back at National Trail on July 26, making some runs, and he reset the track record to 8.58/182.73. - Collett had the honor of claiming the first U.S. Nationals Top Gas title, a feat that earned him a brand-new ’64 Ford Mustang (as shown in the attached photo). Notes: Collett qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.92/190.66 just made the show. In the opening round, he improved to 7.87/191.08 to defeat Gary Cochran. Rico Paris fouled against him in round two, and Gordon made an easy 11.02/85.87 run to advance. Norm Wilcox lost fire in the semifinal, and Collett soloed at 12.96/69.66. He faced Jack Jones in the final. Jones had been running steady 7.7's, but he fell off to an 8.04/193 in the final that lost to Collett's 7.88/187.10. Gordon Won Top Gas Eliminator at the NHRA Winternationals in 1966, 1967, and 1968. |

Notes: Willie Collier, a Greyhound bus driver, began drag racing in 1954 with '32 Ford B/A coupe, racing primarily at Madera where he had good success. In 1956, he bought an unfinished dragster from Bob Peverley and Don Tibbles, fellow members of the Santa Maria Dragons. Collier installed the Ardun-Merc engine and began racing it at Santa Maria. At the first outing there on Sep. 2, he ran 105.88 mph, winning Top Eliminator and the B Open Gas class. At the Oct. 7 race he turned 12.63 at 104.71 mph. Notes: After the successful 1957 season running this dragster at Santa Maria Drag Strip, he sold it to a Santa Barbara hot rodder who put a Corvette motor in it. But in 1958, 50-year-old Collier bought the dragster back and put an Olds motor in it. He won B Open Gas class at San Luis Obispo on Nov. 16.
