Notes: On May 17, John qualified second at a sixteen-car show at OCIR with a 7.07. He ran a tire-smoking 7.39/180.72 that lost to Gary Cochran's 7.31/218 in the first round. At the Drag News Nationals at Lions on August 30, a first-round 6.79/220.04 beat Bob Hightower's 6.90/212. An even quicker 6.75/222.77 defeated Denny Fitt's 6.96/212. He continued to improve with a 6.74/220.04 in the semifinals over a reinstated Hightower who lost with a 6.94/211. In the final James Warren fouled against him and John cruised to a 10.96/94.24 for the victory. |

Notes: In mid-September, Collins faced Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger at Suffolk for a best of three match. The Maverick won the first two races and the match with times of 7.42/195.22 and 7.34/205.00. They ran a third race, but Collins fouled and shut off giving Al the last race win. He was runner-up at Lions on October 24 for an eight-car show that saw 25 cars attempting to qualify. He qualified and then beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a 7.19/189.47. In the semifinals, he advanced with an out of shape 8.13/153.06 when Dick Bourgeois shut off. In the final, he ran Dave Beebe. Collins tried hard with a 7.26/196.93, but Beebe got the victory with a track record 7.07 at 193. John drove the Maverick at Lions on November 21 for an eight-car show where he qualified #2 with a 7.11. He hurt the motor and was unable to run in eliminations. On December 12 he was at Irwindale's Toys for Tots race where he ran 7.39 to qualify #5. He shut off early in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. |

Notes: John qualified #12 at Pomona at 6.563/225.56, then went to the semis on race day, hitting a nice 6.510/198.67 in the process. John lost to eventual winner Dale Emery in the Jeg's Camaro. That was his only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: John was at OCIR in September for the East vs. West Championships. All sixteen cars were to make three runs. In Collins' first race, his 6.86/190.67 defeated Tripp Shumake in the "Sundance" car. John Dekker smoked the tires against him in his second race, and Collins won easily. A 7.18 in the third race beat Mike Halloran. Only he and Jim Dunn had won all their races, so they ran for the title. I have no times for their race, but Jim got the win as Collins had to settle for the runner-up spot. On October 20, he was at Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his opponent Billy Meyer failed to fire, so John advanced with a 6.56/194. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde's 6.44/201 in the M/T Grand Am. |

Notes: In the first week of May, John raced at the NHRA Division 6 opener at Seattle. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.54/210.77 qualified #4. An easy 7.02/168.53 beat Bill Spevacek in round one, and in round two, his 6.70/173.07 defeated Richard Rogers. In the semi-final, John's 6.60/196.07 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.48/225. The following week, he was in Portland for the Oregon Open. His 6.54 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.49/202.70 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Bob Pickett's 6.26/225 in the M/T Grand Am. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for a ten-car show. All cars ran two races, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His car broke a magneto in his first race, and McCulloch soloed with a 6.48. In his second race, Collins ran 6.64/197.80 to beat Gary Burgin, who shut off to 7.49/125. Unfortunately, his times were not good enough to advance to the final. John was at Sacramento in June for the second NHRA Division 7 race. He lasted until the final before his late 6.94/191.49 finished runner-up to Jake Johnston's 7.09/134 in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza. Collins competed at the World Series of Drag Racing event held at Cordova in August. It was a two-day race, and on Friday, he shut down against Don Prudhomme in the first round. He also had problems in the first round on Saturday, where his 9.44 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.63/221. Collins ran one of his better times of the year in the second round, where his 6.36/221.61 defeated Ron Colson's 6.60/218 in the "Hawaiian." All cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Despite John's great run, his time did not advance to the final. John was the 4th alternate at his only NHRA national event, the World Finals (times not reported). | This one debuted as the McEwen team car in '76 after retiring the old '72 car Collins ran at Puyallup earlier that year (WOT burnouts.) He raced at the 64 funny car event in Seattle. - Joe Moore |

Notes: John was at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. He improved to 6.60/204.78 in the first round, to beat Jim Liberman's 6.82. Another 6.60 in the second round beat Rick Johnson while a semifinal 6.61 advanced when Raymond Beadle broke a rear end in the "Blue Max." In the final, he faced Tom Hoover, and Collins ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.58/221.12, to take the victory. John qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals at 6.293/231.36 and then won a round one matchup with John Lombardo, 6.250/228.42 to 6.80/138. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two, 6.14/203 to John's 12-second shut-off pass. He didn't race another NHRA national event until Indy, where his 6.281/225.56 was the third alternate. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. | Second quickest at SIR '77 64 FCs at 6.38, after John Lombardo's meet's quickest 6.24. They met in the final, where people (me included) climbed over the fence into the grass, and some blind drunk stepped into Lombardo's beams for an instant red light, giving Collins the win. - Joe Moore |

Notes: John bought the car and ran it on his own with Pioneer. He was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3 with a 6.75. A first-round 6.79/193 beat Wayne Stoeckel, and in round two, a 6.90/216 beat Dave Hough. But in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, John qualified #14 at 6.400/225.56. He lost to Denny Savage's 6.39/214 in the first round, with a 6.55/217.91. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. His 6.46 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field, and a first-round 6.42 beat Les Cassidy's 7.33. Collins slowed to 6.60/182.18 in round two, but it was enough to beat Bryan Raines' 7.19/204. He slowed even more in the semifinals when he smoked the tires hard coming off the line, and his 7.75/134.00 lost to the eventual winner Tripp Shumake's 6.36/231. John was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show, but Billy Meyer had, but his car broke, so Collons took his place in the show. However, it didn't do a lot of good as in the opening round, his 6.37/196.70 lost to John Lombardo's 6.18/224. At the end of April, he competed in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.56/229.00 qualified #7. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.90/175.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.56/225. His next stop was at Tulsa on May 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. The track was poor, so his 6.82/211.76 actually qualified #3. But he fell off to 7.44/187.10 in a first-round loss to Billy Graham's 7.04/205. Early in June, Collins was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.74/215.83. He improved to 6.65/197.81 in the first round, to beat Dale Tuter, and in the semifinals, he took a big win when his 6.55 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.62 in the "Blue Max."He faced low qualifier Tom McEwen in the final, and this day proved to be Collins as his 6.46 easily took the victory over the "Goose's" 6.67. He was having so much fun on the AHRA tour that he was back at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. He didn't do as well there as he had at St. Louis. He qualified #5 with a 6.43/202, which set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Gene Snow. Unfortunately, the race was no contest as John got crossed up and shut down to 7.75/136, which Gene ran 6.44/195 to advance. John was the fifth alternate at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.42 (no speed reported). John qualified #5 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals in August with a 6.43/212.50. But in the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape against low qualifier Billy Graham and shut off. He was the third alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.263/220.58. But he was the #2 qualifier at 6.134/220.58 at NHRA Ontario. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, with a consistent 6.138/221.67 to a shutoff. In round two, he broke on the burnout, sending Denny Savage on to the next round. John did not hit 230 mph in NHRA competition this year. Did he run 234.56 somewhere else? |

Notes: John qualified #2 at the AHRA Winternationals, but lost in the first round. Things were even worse at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify. If that wasn't bad enough, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, and while attempting to qualify, crashed into the guardrail. The Datsun Z body flew off and the car caught fire. John was OK, but the fire totaled what was left of the car. John got the first Datsun body out of the mold, which was originally supposed to be Gary Densham's. Densham had to wait for the second one. |

Notes: John started the season at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94/197. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gordie Bonin. He lost that race when his 6.77/216 fell to Bonin's 6.65/219. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.21/234.37 but his 6.43/194.38 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.15/238 in the first round. He barely made the show at the Gatornationals, qualifying #16 with a 6.143/241.28. The car went into a wheelstand in the first round, and he shut off, losing to Dale Pulde. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.64 best was well off the 6.16 "bump." The following weekend (May 3), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. John went to St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 and then ran 6.56/210.76 in the opening round to beat Larry Gould's quicker but later 6.51/221. He improved by two tenths in the semifinal to a 6.36, but that wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.26. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #10 with a 6.23/226.70. He upset Prudhomme in the first round, where Collins' 6.20/239.36 beat the "Snake's" 6.56/175. In round two, he continued to impress, where his 6.31/215 easily defeated Fuzz Miller's 6.61/192. A 6.34/232.55 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.29/210 in the semifinal. His best NHRA national event ET was a 6.127 at Englishtown. The Gainesville speed was his fastest number. Where did John run 6.01? |

Notes: Collins did not run in 1982. Collins' Pioneer Sponsorship ended late '81; he sat out '82, returned in '83 with Camaro & JVC. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | Qualified second at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.88, but lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. A 6.445/222.22 failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, and an improving 6.09 still was unable to make the cut at the Gatornationals. He also failed to qualify for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running only a best of 6.35/209.78. A 6.81 qualified fifth at the AHRA Springnationals at Tulsa on May 2, but he met low qualifier (6.29), Don Prudhomme, in the first round, and his 6.63/198.23 fell to Don's 6.36/235.60. On the NHRA side of things, a 6.17/232.55 was good for second alternate at the Springnationals in June. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals, John qualified sixth with a 6.31/220.59, but he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen's 6.11/227.28 in the first round. Another 6.17 at the NHRA Summernationals on July 17 again made him a non-qualifier. He followed that up with another non-qualifying attempt at the Mile High Nationals on July 30, where his 6.29/227.27 failed to make the show. A 5.97/241.28 did make the show in the sixteenth spot at the NHRA US Nationals, but he lost to Tom Anderson in the first round. He qualified fifth at the AHRA World Finals at Spokane, but fell in the first round, to a hard-charging John Force, who ran 5.79/253.52 to beat Collins' 6.17/216.34. He ended the year on a high note by qualifying #1 with a 5.91 at OCIR's final drag race on October 29, but he failed to make it into the finals. |

Notes: John qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but in the first round, his blower exploded while running eventual winner Al Segrini. Things went much better at Gainesville, where he qualified #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.849/249.30. He ran an easy 6.05/231.36 to advance in round one, when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems, and in round two, another "easy" 6.09/231.36 got around John Force in round two. Both he and his opponent, Billy Meyer, smoked the tires in the semifinals, but Collins' 6.45/216 tripped the win light over Meyer's 6.44/239. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein, and John had a ringside seat as he watched Kenny run the sport's first 260 (5.80/260.11) while his 5.92/245.90 got him the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, John's 5.93/247.93 qualified #12. Unfortunately, in the first round, an off-pace 6.19/243.24 lost to Tim Grose's 5.94/241. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge after crashing with Ed McCulloch during qualifying. Both cars were destroyed, but the drivers were alright. John rebuilt the Camaro after the Baton Rouge crash. Photo from US Nationals. |

Notes: At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway, John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.87/245.23. That was the quickest time he ran that day on his way to winning. A first-round 8.76 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline and, in the semifinals, an even slower 9.13 got the win when Don Prudhomme also crossed the centerline. In the final, he faced Kenny Bernstein, and after Kenny did his burnout, his reverser failed, giving Collins a solo for the win. John ran 6.66/149.50 to claim his first title of the new year. Collins started his NHRA season at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 5.85/248.48 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." Collins smoked the tires and lost to Lombardo's 5.66/254. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show in Atlanta on March 10 but was the first alternate. At the Gatornationals, a 5.89/249.03 qualified #15, and in the first round, he picked up to a 5.76/246.71 to beat Jody Smart. In round two, he ran a 5.74/256.11 to beat a tire-smoking Prudhomme. But in the semifinals, Collins had to shut off to a 10.15 due to severe tire shake. He lost to Bernstein. In April at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, John qualified #14 with a 5.99/243.11. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.02/238.47 before losing to Ed McCulloch in round two. He qualified #15 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals with a 6.01/243.50. John beat Tom McEwen in the first round with a 5.95/231.60 before losing to Ron Correnti's 5.96/242 with a 6.06/221.45 in round two. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.83/244. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 5.79/246 before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John's 5.97/244.29 qualified #12. A first-round 5.93/241 beat Rick Johnson's quicker 5.90/249, and in the second round, another holeshot 5.98/240.51 beat McEwen's 5.91/245. But in the semifinals, his 5.94/244.96 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.82/241. A week later (June 23), he was at Brainerd for the Crown Auto US Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Collins' 5.82/240.32 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.82/237 in a close one. Later in a consolation race, John returned and ran another 5.82 at 252.80 to beat Lombardo's 6.08/218. John made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.86/252.38. Both he and McEwen ran 5.86 (Collins at 246.84) in round one, but McEwen got the win light. John set Low ET and Top Speed at NHRA Brainerd at 5.712/257.14 to qualify #1. He finished as a runner-up to John Force at that event. Those were his best times of the year. John went on to win the NHRA Fallnationals at Phoenix. |

Notes: Audio express, lost sponsorship. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Collins only ran two NHRA national events in '86, including the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a 5.67/252.10. In the first round, he beat a tire smoking Tom Hoover with a 5.80/210.77. In round two, he ran an off pace 6.10/167.28 that lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.68. The other race was the NHRA World Finals, also at Pomona. There, his best of 5.90/248.61 failed to qualify (fifth alternate). |
