Notes: Won Indy 1972 as many other top drivers attended the competing PRA race at Tulsa. Still, a huge achievement over a huge field. Ran 9.56 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/72. | Ray Allen's Vega didn't debut until mid-season. He was at Englishtown on July 9 where he won over a eight car field. He got to solo in the final for the win and ran 9.98/135.13. He was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where he qualified the car #21 in the 32-car field. He lost to Mike Fons' 9.72 in the opening round with a 9.83. He ran at the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Cayuga where he made it into the final against another Vega, that of Rich Mirarcki. The two had a good race, but Ray's 9.73/139.75 finished second best to Rich's 9.67/141. Then came his big win at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. It was another 32-car field and he qualified #3 with a 9.67/141.85. A first-round 9.71/142.85 beat Irv Beringhaus while in round two he beat Larry Huff. He had a tough race against Ken Dondero driving Don Nicholson's SOHC Maverick in round three, but his 9.61 beat Ken's 9.70. He quickened his pace to a 9.56 at 143.54 (Top Speed) in the semifinals while beating Ron Hutter. This set up another final between him and Mirarcki. This time Allen got the upper hard with his 9.58 getting the victory over Mirarcki's 9.80. |

Notes: Allen was in Connecticut in April for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 9.50 beat Bobby Lewis, but in the semifinal, his off-pace 10.67 lost to eventual winner Richie Zul's 9.43. He was at Englishtown on May 6 for the NHRA Division One opener. An opening round 9.43/145.63 beat Bill Lawton's 9.47/143 but despite improving to 9.37/147 in the semifinal, he lost to Paul Blevins' 9.31/148. Shortly after that (May 20), he won the second NHRA Division One race held at Cayuga, Ontario. He set Low ET there at 9.41, and in the final, his 9.48/142.18 beat Ron Hutter's slightly quicker 9.47/142. Early in June, Ray was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he fouled against Ken Dondero. He was the third alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 9.55. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. All cars were to make three runs. In Allen's first race, his 9.27/147.78 lost to Herb McCandless' 9.16/149. He also lost his second race, where a 9.30/147.05 fell to Mike Fons' 9.17/135. In his last race, he scored a 9.20/147.78, beating Frank Russo's 9.38/149. His next stop was at Cecil County for the All-American Pro Stock Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 9.36/144.23 beat Rob Campbell's 9.42/141. But in the semifinal, his 9.51/131.57 lost to the race's eventual winner Ed Schartman, who advanced at 9.12/146. Near the end of June, he was at Maple Grove for the USRT event. He was not a regular on the circuit, but rain postponed the race from a Wednesday to Thursday. Three cars were unable to stay the extra day, so Allen filled in for one. He lost in the first round, to Ken Dondero, who was driving one of "Dyno Don" Nicholson's Pinto's. But Ray later came back out to run in a consolation race where he beat Dave Kanners' 9.34/143 with a 9.31/145.86. Ray qualified #25 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 9.41. He beat Sonny Bryant in the opening round of eliminations, and in round two, his 9.31 beat Bobby Yowell's quicker, 9.29. But in round three, his 9.30 fell to Melvin Yow's 9.14. Ray ran 9.401/135.39 for the 32nd qualifying spot at NHRA Indianapolis on 9/01/73. He got into the field as the defending champion. |

Notes: Allen qualified #10 with an 8.56/156.79 at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He fouled against Lee Shepherd in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was almost a carbon copy of Pomona. He qualified #10 with an 8.528/158.17 and lost to Shepherd's 8.41/159 in the first round, with an 8.61/156.52. The Gainesville qualifying numbers was their best of the year. The Jenkins and Allen team failed to qualify at most of the other NHRA events they attended. Ray was the fourth alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.78/150.28 best. The NHRA Summernationals saw an 8.78/155.17 being the fifth alternate. They did qualify for the US Nationals at Indianapolis. An 8.60/155.44 qualified #13. Ray lost to John Hagen's Arrow in the first round. An 8.59/156.52 was the second alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals, and they ended the year as the first alternate at the NHRA World Finals with an 8.53/156.24. One of the reasons the team wasn't up to par with their NHRA equipment was that they were running a lot of big-inch match race stuff this year. |

Notes: This car is a real nice unrestored Impala Kingswood wagon with a factory 454 LS-1 and 12 bolt posi. It used to be an ambulance. We raced in in the Bracket 2 points program at Muncie Dragway doing well enough to race at the IHRA Div. 3 Bracket Finals in Norwalk, Oh. And won two rounds. |

Notes: Tommy started the year at Bakersfield on January 2 for an NHRA Jackpot Circuit Race. He beat John Edmunds in the first round, with an 8.01/205.46. He didn't win, but he ran well. On January 9 at Carlsbad for another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race, he qualified #1 with a 7.57/209.30 and beat Mike Sorokin in the first round, with a 7.55. In the semifinal, he beat Bill Leavitt with a 7.52/209.78 that held for Low ET of the meet. In the final, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.59/205.00 with a 7.90/208.80. At the Santa Maria Fuel Fest on January 16, he qualified second with a 7.87/202.70. In the first round, a 7.76/177.86 beat James Warren's 8.01/190.00 in Jim Seaton's Chrysler. In the second round, he got a bye run and, in the semifinal, a 7.91/199.54 beat Ron Hampshire (8.34) in Ted Gotelli's car. In the final, he faced the Low ET (7.74) car of Bill Demarest and beat him with a 7.77/199.54. At another Jackpot Pro Circuit race at Pomona on January 23, he runner-upped to Bill Leavitt with Bill's 7.76/193.54, beating Tom's 7.79/194. At the NHRA Winternats in February, he qualified 24th with a 7.80 but failed to make it to the late rounds. The Bakersfield March Meet was run on the 5 and 6th. On Saturday, Allen ran 7.55/204.08 to beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two, his 7.69/199.10 finished second best to Mike Snively's 7.64/199. On Sunday, he again made it into round two. An opening round 7.92/183.67 beat Jack Ewell, who had shut down early, but his 7.69/203.60 lost to Snively's 7.49/195. Tom won again on March 13 at Carlsbad for a Jackpot Pro-Circuit race. He ran a final round 7.87/205.94 to win. He was runner-up to Danny Ongais on March 26 for the Riverside Jackpot Circuit race. A final round 7.79/201.44, lost to Ongais' 7.71/205. Another win came on March 27 when 17 cars showed for an eight-car field at Pomona. Tommy faced Tom McEwen in the final and ran a 7.66/207.36 to win when McEwen fouled. The roles were reversed on April 3 at Carlsbad for a Division 7 race when McEwen set Low ET (7.53) in winning over Allen in the final. Irwindale held a sixteen-car Top Fuel show on April 9, and Allen ran well enough to meet Dave Beebe in the final. Unfortunately, the two cars were lined up for the final when a circuit breaker blew out. Due to the late hour, the final was never run, and the two split the purse. On April 17, he was back at Riverside for another Jackpot circuit race. In the first round, Dave McKenzie failed to fire, so Tommy ran a solo, but, in the semifinal, he lost to John Mulligan's 7.80. Irwindale held another sixteen-car event on April 23, and a 7.90 qualified Tommy #10. In the first round, he fouled against Nick Marshall. He lost to Mulligan's 7.30/219.50 blast in the first round, at the Pomona Pro Circuit race on April 24. At Beeline's Third Annual Fuel and Gas Championships on April 30, Allen set Top Speed at 208.32 and won the meet with a final 7.95/127.97 when McEwen fouled. At Irwindale on May 7, he qualified second at 7.84 and ran a first-round 7.94/181.08 over John Mitchell. But a strong run of 7.65/200.88 by Snively in the Hawaiian beat Tom's 7.98/200.44 in the second frame. On May 8, another Jackpot Pro-Circuit race was held in Carlsbad. Tommy set a 7.52 track record in the first round, at 206.88 and went on to the final to meet Beebe. There Allen fouled away a 7.57/208.32, letting Beebe's 7.61/192.70 collect the win. Another win came at Irwindale on May 14 when he beat Jim Dunn in the final. Allen qualified #1 with a 7.57 that held for Low ET. Fifteen cars showed for the eight-car field at Irwindale the following week (May 21). Allen qualified and ran 7.78 in the first two rounds to meet Ongais in the final. Danny fouled, and Tommy took another victory with a 7.92/201.34. He was at San Diego for a best of three match against Lyle Fisher and Red Greth the next day. Ray Maurell drove their car. He won the first race with an 8.17/191 when Ray shut off, but in the second race, Allen shut off to 8.56/130 while Maurell got the win with an 8.16/189. Allen got the match race victory in the tie-breaker with a 7.77/200.89 over Ray, who had got out of shape and shut off. Irwindale treated him well as on June 4, he again qualified #1 with a 7.74 and went on to win over a fouling Steve Porter in the final. He was at Carlsbad on June 10 for an eight-car show but lost in the semifinals. The next day (June 11) found him back at Irwindale. He ran an 8.66/131.77 over a fouling Ron Goodsell in the first round, and a semifinal 7.87/194.38 beat Dwight Salisbury. In the final, his off pace 8.09/128 lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.63/206. He didn't win at Carlsbad on June 17, and on the 18th, he was back at Irwindale, where a 7.80 qualified #5. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Sorokin and beat him with a 7.66/177.86 over Mike's 7.87. In the semifinal, a holeshot by Ongais made his 7.58/199.10 a loser to Danny's 7.59/205. On June 19, Riverside held the HRM Championships. Allen qualified #22 with a 7.70/206.43. He stopped James Warren in the first round, but in the second round, John Edmunds' 7.49/205 beat his 7.54/206.42. He lost in the first round, at an eight-car show at Irwindale on June 25. Allen qualified #6 with a 7.70, but in the first round, he shut off to a 9.11/84.90 and lost to Ongais' 7.79/201. He suffered another rare first-round loss at Irwindale on July 9 when Mulligan ran a Low ET 7.44/205 to stop his 7.73/204.54. On July 10 at Santa Maria, John Edmunds' 7.63/209.30 stopped his 7.82 in the first round. He ran well at Lions for the AHRA Championships but failed to make the finals. He did make the final at Carlsbad on July 29 for an eight-car show, but Mulligan's 7.91/203 beat his 8.27/131.38. On August 12, he qualified #1 with a 7.74 at Irwindale. He ran Low ET in the first round, with a 7.72/208.32, beating John Harbert, but in doing so, he lost his motor in the lights and was done for the day. He had Top Speed (216) at Carlsbad on August 15 for an eight-car show and beat Bill Leavitt and Leroy Goldstein to advance into the final to meet the Low ET (7.44) car of Jeep Hampshire. Allen took the win. He won again the following week at Carlsbad (August 26). Once again, he met Jeep Hampshire in the final. This time, Allen set Low ET with a final round blast of 7.47/205.46 to cover Jeep's 7.82/201. He continued his winning ways at Carlsbad on September 5 by winning the Jackpot Circuit race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.51/216.34 before dropping Leroy Goldstein's 7.71/210 in the final with a 7.76/208.30. Goldstein reversed the roles on September 15 when he met Allen in the final at Carlsbad for an eight-car show. In the final, Tommy fouled, giving Leroy the win. Not sure what car he was driving or if it was even the Allen and Huff car in these notes above. On September 23, for sure in the Allen-Huff car, he attended the final Division 7 race at Irwindale. In round one, he lost to John Edmunds (7.61/200.88) after setting Top Speed in qualifying at 213.76. On October 7 at Carlsbad, a second-round track record (7.36) by Leroy Goldstein (Crower & Blair) beat Allen. At Irwindale on October 15, he again lost in the first round, this time to Dominic Cardoza's 7.74/202.24. The next day (October 16), back at Carlsbad, he won his first-round race but lost a motor doing it, putting him out. He raced at the Irwindale Grand Prix on October 22, getting past a fouling Dwight Salisbury in the first round, with a best-ever (to this point) 7.39. He ran another 7.39 at 196.92 in round two to beat Jerry Bivins' 7.53/205. In the third round (32-car field), his 7.61 beat Frank Pedregon, but he lost to Beebe in the semifinals. On October 23, at Carlsbad, Allen's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.27/208.80 won, beating Ewell's 7.53. Finally! A first-round 7.28/201.78 showed his final time was no fluke. He made an easy run in the semis when Kelly Brown fouled in the Outcast. Tommy qualified #1 with a 7.38 at Irwindale on November 19, but he shut off on the line with no oil pressure in the first round. On December 26 at Irwindale for the UDRA Fuel Championships, Tommy qualified eighth with a 7.44/214.30. He won his first-round but lost to Mike Sorokin's 7.50 in round two with a 7.52/195.22. Blair's Engineering. First over 210: Tommy Allen - 212.76 mph national record at Carlsbad, California, 4/02/66, then 213.76 at Irwindale on 9/24/66. |

Notes: Allen was at Lions on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 7.64/199.54 lost to Rick Stewart's 7.48/216. But Stewart's car broke on the run, so Tommy was reinstated for the semifinals, where his 7.89 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.63. At the AHRA Winternationals, Tommy qualified #21 with a 7.87, and he beat Gene Goleman in the first round, before fouling against Steve Carbone in round two. Surprisingly, Allen failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On February 12, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified last with a 7.32/213.76 but broke while doing it and was replaced by Jack Williams. A week later (February 19), he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet, but he lost to Mike Sorokin in the first round. On March 5, Allen was at Carlsbad for another eight-car show. Twenty-three cars were attempting to qualify, and Tommy's 7.16/214.28 qualified #3. He lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 7.23/218 in the first round, when he had problems and shut off early. He was back at Irwindale in April. A 7.58 qualified #3 in the eight-car show, but his car broke while winning in the first round, and he could not return for the semifinal. At the HRM Championships, Allen qualified #2 in the 32-car show with a 7.30/211.26. He shut off to 8.31/119.72 in the first round, when Hank Clark fouled against him. Unfortunately, a second-round 7.49/209.30 lost to McEwen's 7.37/209. He won over an eight-car field at Lions on April 22. He only qualified #5 with a 7.48, but in the first round, low qualifier, Dave Beebe had problems, and Allen's 7.76/210.28 advanced. His 7.57/205.00 beat Steve Carbone driving John Bateman's "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Bob Mayer in the "Speedmasters" car. Allen took the victory with a 7.47/207.34 over Mayer's 7.59/209. A week later, he was at Irwindale, where he fouled against Beebe in the first round. More problems for the team came at the NHRA Division 7 race at Carlsbad. They qualified for the eight-car field, but a 7.28 first-round win over John Edmunds' 7.29 in Tony Waters' car cost them some engine parts, and they were unable to return for the semifinal. On May 13, Tommy was a Lions, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.26 at 214.28. He made his way into the final by running 7.61/183.28 and 7.50/185.18, but he lost to Claude Stark driving the "Berry Brothers" car in the final. It was back to Irwindale for another eight-car show on May 20. In the opening round, his 7.54/190 lost to eventual winner Jeep Hampshire's 7.46/176. He got another win on June 17 when he won at Lions. A quick-leaving 7.36/203.60 beat James Warren's quicker 7.27 in the first round, and a 7.56 in the semifinals his 7.56 beat Kelly Brown. In the final, a 7.49/214.28 beat Jeep Hampshire. The following week (June 24), he lost in the first round, to McEwen at the NHRA Division 7 race at Stardust Raceway. |

Notes: Blair's Engineering machine. Ran 6.77 at OCIR. | After Tommy Allen was released from the Army, he rejoined Larry Huff to drive this Top Fuel dragster. Car owner Huff was not shy when it came to spending money on this car. The total cost of the car and trailer was $30,000. The trailer housed a spare engine ready to go if needed. The engines were Ed Pink built 392 Hemis. Woody Gilmore built the 196" wheelbase chassis. The rear end was a Mopar unit carrying 3.64 gears. The first time Tommy drove for Huff was at Lions on May 10. Unfortunately, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Allen was back at OCIR on May 17 for a sixteen-car show. He beat Bob Williams in the first round, with a 7.56/212.26, but in round two, another 7.56/185.94 lost to Leland Kolb. On May 24 he was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He beat Ron Goodsell's 7.09 in the first round, with a 6.98/218.97 and in round two, he ran a consistent 6.97, but lost to Hank Westmoreland's better leaving 7.00. Irwindale held another race on June 7. Allen qualified and then ran 7.03/217.38 in the first round, to beat Butch Maas' 7.37/215 in Tony Waters' car. In the semifinals, he slowed to 7.27/191.88 that lost to Carl Olson's 6.99/217. |

Notes: Also 6.90 at Riverside Raceway Hot Rod Championships 69. Tommy was still driving for Byron at Lions on April 19 for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 6.73 and a first-round 6.78/195.22 beat James Warren's 6.92/223. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 7.27/197.80 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Gary Cochran's 6.90/222. |

Notes: Blair's Engineering. | Tommy Allen must have been taking it easy early in '70 as I can't find anything on him until August 15 at the OCIR Anniversary race where he lost fire on the line in round one. It gets better though, when he qualified #1 with a 6.87 at Irwindale, but still lost in round one, when he smoked the tires against Kelly Brown. Back at OCIR for their double header on August 29, he qualified #1 with a 6.74, but lost to James Warren's 6.75/212 in round one, with an off pace 7.17/195. At the Lions Anniversary race on September 26, Allen was starting to set a pattern. He qualified #1 with a Low ET of the Meet 6.57 then lost in round one. He made it past the first-round at Irwindale's second annual Grand Prix on October 3, but lost to Gary Cochran's holeshot 6.91/212 to Allen's quicker 6.89/210.28. On October 24, Lions held an eight-car fuel meet and Tommy lost in the semis to Danny Ongais' 6.54/227 with a 6.66/220.04. Allen won a big one driving Byron Blair's car to a win at the AHRA World Finals on November 15 beating Preston Davis in the final. A 6.831 qualified him #13 at the NHRA Supernationals, but he lost early. | Best NHRA national event times were the 6.831 at 207.85. |
