Notes: Joe was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener on May 3. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 7.35/175.78. In the first round, his Corvette broke, giving Bob Gottschalk a single into the semifinals. Only 14 alcohol Funny Cars showed at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, so qualifying for the show was easy (sixteen-car field). Joe ran 8.31/134.12 to qualify #13. Rain delayed the race, and some racers never returned for eliminations. Comella's first-round opponent, Frank Manzo, did not return, so Joe soloed with a 9.62/88.32. George Cambra broke against him in round two, and Joe advanced with a 7.44/182.92. A semifinal 7.38/182.18 lost to Lee Zeinert's 6.91/202.

Notes: Joe's 7.07/193.98 qualified #14 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the opening round, he improved slightly to a 7.05/198.93 to beat Bob Elliot. In round two, he shut off to 15.04/47.87 in a loss to Gary Henderson's 6.55/210. At Atlanta, his 6.93/196.93 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field for the NHRA Southern Nationals. In the first round, Henderson broke, and Joe advanced with a 7.06/191.48. In the semifinal, his 7.36/192.30 lost to Vern Moats' 6.55/208. He was at Columbus on May 8th for the NHRA Division 3 opener. A 7.22/190.27 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He slowed to an off-pace 7.62/182.55 in round one that fell to Jim Bailey's 6.97/169.
