Notes: The 1972 Mustang Mach I sat on an SPE Chassis, and lettering by Dennis Rickliff (check spelling). The car ran a 6.89 at 220. I ran the car at Pomona, Orange County Raceway, and Hawaii Raceway Park. Thanks so much for a terrific site. - Robert Contorelli | Robert spent approximately $15,000 in '72 to build this Mustang. The SPE chassis had a 120" wheelbase, and the Mustang body came from Ed Wills' shop. The engine was an aluminum Donovan, built by Gene Oates. A 1/2" Velasco stroker crank was used as well as Howard's rods and Arias pistons. The cam came from Engle. Oates also ported and polished the early Hemi heads. Both the intake and exhaust valves were Donovan 2 inches. A Don Hampton-prepared blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. Up top sat an Enderle injection unit that fed the 80% nitro mix to the engine. The engine produced approximately 1,200 hp. A 10" triple disc clutch fed the power through a SPE direct drive to a 4.56 rear. The total weight of the car was 1,800 lbs., including 75 lbs. of ballast. Don Henderson of American Fiberglass sprayed on the Aztec gold and candy blue paint. |

Notes: Brian failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times unavailable). He was the fourth alternate at Bandimere at 6.670/214.79. Those were his only two NHRA national events this year. His next stop was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Summernationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.88/209.79 qualified #6. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round, but Conway had more problems, as he had a small oil fire in the lights. He got it stopped, alright, and both he and the car were OK. |

Notes: The photo is from Bandimere, but Brian did not appear on the alternate list in 1982. (Our alternate list may be incomplete as it only shows two alternates). He did race there in 1981. Is this a 1981 photo? We need the best times for this year. |

Notes: Blown alky. May have run fuel before the end of 1966, not certain. Glass body-110" C&O box steel tube chassis. Conway ran car through 1969. Sold to Ken Coleman, who ran it as AA/FC for a while in 1969, before turning it into a bracket car, which he was still running in 1979 at least. Long Beach CA 1966 (March 1967 Drag Racing) |

Notes: It was the beginning of the 1966 racing season, and Gene Ciambella clanged the bell loudly when his newly completed Austin garnered the A/GS trophy at both the AHRA Winternationals at Irwindale, and the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Ran a 9.87/144.19 to beat K.S. Pittman's Willys at the NHRA Winter doings. (Also new for '66, NHRA began the first of a series of confounding-to-some reclassifications of the gas class structure when it retitled the "classic" A/GS as AA/G, B/GS as BB/G, etc.) Lastly, about this time Ciambella began using another name professionally. He would in the future be known as Gene Conway. - RT |

Notes: The C&O Jeep used a fiberglass body from Fibercraft Co. It used a 392 Hemi that was overbored .030. It also ran a 1/2 stroker crank from Reath. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as a Schneider cam. Syverson ported and polished the heads and both the intake and exhaust valves from Donovan measured 2 1/8 inches. An M/T intake manifold held the 30% overdriven blower in place. A Hilborn injection unit topped it off. The engine was run on 70% nitro. The hp was claimed to be 1,000. A C&O built TorqueFlite was used. The tube frame had a 110" wheelbase and the car weighed in at 2,200 Lbs. Early runs produced an 8.23/177.62. Gene was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in early April, but his first-round 9.22/166.66 lost to Fred Goeske's 8.70/181 in the first round, of the 2400 lb. Funny Car class. On April 15, he competed at an eight-car show at Lions. He qualified #3 with a 9.14 and another 9.14 in the first round, beat Rusty Delling's "Fiberglass Trends" Corvair. He lost to the race's eventual winner Hayden Proffitt in the semifinals. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 26 and Gene was there. A first-round 8.24/176.12 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary", but in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.53/171.10 against Marv Eldridge's 9.53/169. Conway won over an eight-car field at Lions on September 30. He beat Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, with an 8.39/172.74 and in the semifinals, his 8.31/172.08 beat Steve Barrett's 8.45/171 in the "New Breed." The final found Conway running Frank Pisano's Camaro. Frank ran a personal best of 8.19/170, but lost to Conway's holeshot-aided 8.25/175.78. On December 17, he was at OCIR's final race of '67. He led the eight-car field in qualifying with an 8.07/177 and went on to win, beating Ray Alley in the final. Also ran 8.13 at Fremont in late 1967. |

Notes: Conway raced this car briefly while transitioning from the Destroyer jeep to a couple of very successful Corvette floppers. This was the former Mark Bullet "Bloomin Bullet" funny with a glass Firebird clip replacing the original Camaro tilt front. Conway replaced the Bullet's blown Chevy with his preferred early hemi, backed by a TorqueFlite. Chuck Finders built the square-tube chassis. - RT | Gene was at Lions on March 30, where he made three passes in competition. The Firebird got out of shape on the first run, and he shut down against Rusty Delling. Gene really picked up on his second pass, running 8.18/173.74 to beat Delling's 8.45/170. He won his last race with an 8.49/168.35. On April 28, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. An opening round 8.76 beat Delling's tire-smoking 9.01, but in the semifinals, he lost fire against Fred Goeske. He was still driving the Firebird on May 4 at the OCIR Funny Car Championships. Gene was part of the Pontiac team, but he failed to reach the finals. He was back at Lions on May 18, and he could not qualify for the eight-car field. They decided to run two full eight-car fields since so many FC's showed. Conway's 9.89 qualified on the "bump" for the second eight. A 7-cylinder 10.06/105 in the first round, lost to Larry Barker's 8.84/175. He then went to OCIR for a fuel altered vs. funny car race. The Firebird was still not running up to par. An ailing 11.15/76.98 lost to Gary Reed's 8.14/157 in the first round, but a 9.14/168.85 in round two beat Sush Matsubara. In round three, he improved to 8.43/172.08 to beat Randy Bradford. |

Notes: Conway started the year at Irwindale on January 1, qualifying 6th with an 8.31 but losing to Hayden Proffitt's holeshot 8.49/166.97 to Gene's 8.39/173.74 in the first round. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet, his 8.98/164.83 qualified him 21. He lost to Roger Lindamood in the first round. At Lions on February 24, Conway's 8.20 qualified him eighth in a sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.13/176.81 failed to beat Rusty Delling's 8.08 in a Firebird. The following day at Carlsbad, an 8.35/175.43 won the first round before Lew Arrington ran an 8.24/181.80 to his 8.43/174.75 in round two. He was runner-up to Rusty Delling on March 17 at the West Coast Championships at Fremont. Gene was at Lions on May 18 for a big Funny Car show. After the top eight qualifiers filled their field, there were so many cars that a second eight-car field was made up of the following eight lowest ET cars. In this second eight-car field, Gene qualified last with a 9.89. The Jeep dropped a cylinder in the first round, and his 10.06 at 105 mph lost to Larry Barker's 8.84 at 175 mph. At the OCIR Funny Car 500 on June 1, Conway beat Andy Clary in round one, with an 8.40, but he failed to make it into the finals. On June 22 at Irwindale, he fouled away an 8.10/178.57 in round one. On August 10, everyone involved in drag racing was watching the big $ 28,000-to-win drag race between Bennie Osborn and Tom McEwen at OCIR. Of course, everyone now knows that Osborn upset McEwen for the prize, but few realized there was also a Funny Car race. Conway won that race with a final round 8.29 over Jess Tyree's 8.38. Back at OCIR on August 31, Gene went to the semifinal, running a best of 8.08/180.36 before losing to Dave Beebe. Not sure how much longer he ran the Jeep after this. The car ran 8.080 at Orange County on 8/31/68. |

Notes: Conway qualified seventh with a 7.95 at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 and he improved to a 7.79 in the second round before losing to Dave Beebe in the semis. At the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 9, Conway lost in the first round, with an off pace 8.18/139.53. His times were improving with a 7.64/185.36 run on August 16 at Irwindale. He competed at the Drag News Nationals at Lions on August 30, but was having handling problems with the car. He lost in the first round, to Jim Adolph's 8.13/167 when the car again refused to go straight and slowed to an 11.65/67.97. On September 1, Irwindale held an eight-car show and Gene qualified #1 with a 7.67. He set Top Speed in the first round, when his 7.76/194.38 lost to Ray Alley's Low ET of the meet 7.58/190. Fortunately for Gene, Alley broke and he was reinstated, but it did him little good as the Corvette broke a rear in the semifinals. The car was then running mid pack, losing early on September 6 at OCIR with a 7.88 best and failing to qualify on September 21 at Irwindale. Gene turned it up a notch, cracking a 7.40/184.80 at Lions on October 25 for the East-West Championships. Back at OCIR for the Manufacturer's meet, Conway qualified with a 7.69 and won his first race with a 7.67/191.08. A semifinal finish and a 7.55/198.66 best came next at Irwindale's big 32-car show on November 23. The car almost caught the Corvette curse at Lions the following week on November 29, when it caught fire on the line in round one. Yet on December 6, Conway returned to OCIR to run his best time of 7.37/181.08. He broke in the semifinal. He went back to Irwindale on December 14, where he failed to qualify. |

Notes: This appears to be a wholly different Firebird than was raced by Conway a year earlier. Stretched flip-top body vs the old two-piece stock-wheelbase lift-off, round-tube frame vs old rectangular-tube, etc. Any idea whether this was purpose-built by Conway or purchased from another racer? - RT |

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12/1970. Ran 7.42/175 at OCIR on 4/18/70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but there he lost in the first round, to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round, and a 7.50/195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43/172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32-car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Assuming that was run in 1971. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from hand written run sheet from Lions Funny Car match race on 6/12/71. Ran 6.97 at Fremont. | Gene failed to qualify for the eight-car show at OCIR for the first All-Pro race. He got lucky when Dave Condit's qualified car broke and was unable to run eliminations. Conway took his place in the field, but in the first round, he lost to Stan Shiroma. He did much better at the second All-Pro race on January 24. He qualified for the show and then beat Butch Maas in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, and in the semifinals, beat Don Prudhomme. In the final, he lost to Rich Siroonian. At Las Vegas for the Stardust Open, a first-round 7.27 lost to Kenney Goodell's 7.17. Another first-round loss came at the Bakersfield March Meet. Only six Funny Cars showed at Fremont for the Northern Nationals on March 14. Conway's Corvette was one of them. He beat Gordon Mineo's 7.52/159 in the first round, with a 7.25/195.22. In the semifinals, he soloed when Tom McEwen had a small fire in his Duster on the line and had to shut off. In the final, Gene was up against Maas. Butch ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.84/217 that beat Conway's off pace 7.64/126.08. Things went better at OCIR for another eight-car show. He had a bit of luck going for him when he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off losing to Ron O'Donnell in the "Super Chief." The good news was that two cars that won their first-round races were unable to make it back for the semifinals. That got Conway back into the show on the "break rule." The breaks kept coming as in the semifinal, he faced Dave Condit's "L. A. Hooker" and the Maverick broke so Gene eased it to a 10.19/86.70 for the win. In the final he ran Gary Burgin. A 7.07/187.89 got the victory over Gary's 7.48/201. On March 20, he was at Lions for an eight-car show and it looked as though it was a repeat of the last event. He got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Dale Pulde. Once again, he got back into the show when another car was unable to make the semis. He faced eventual winner Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Boss 429 powered Pinto for the second time and once again the results were the same. Dale's 7.06 beat Gene's 7.12. On March 27, he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. A first-round 7.08/202.70 lost to Shiroma's 6.95/211. |

Notes: The 6.92/218.97 times were originally listed with the 1970 entry, but Ron Howard researched and confirmed the best times of 7.03/208.32 for that year. We know he ran 6.94/205 in 1971. We are sticking these times in 1972 until we can confirm when they were run. | At the Lions Grand Premiere race, Conway qualified for the sixteen-car field, but his 7.12 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.69. At the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 25, Gene ran well. He won his first-round race, but a second round 7.02 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.97. Gene was at OCIR in May for the Hang Ten Funny Car race. His first-round 6.93/218.44 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.92/185. |
