Notes: Don qualified #29 at NHRA Pomona at 7.110/213.27. He lost to Gary Cochran in round one, 6.892/202.70 to 7.488/217.91. That was his only NHRA national event of the year (Dick Boufgesous drove his Corvette FC at Pomona). Sixty-six Top Fuel cars showed up at Fremont on February 15 for the Northern Nationals sixteen-car field. Don qualified, but he blew a rear end in the opening round and lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. It took a 6.86 just to qualify for the eight-car field. Cook made the show, and his 7.16/182.18 advanced over a fouling John Wiebe in the first round. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 6.83/192.71 held off Jim Dunn's quicker 6.77/204. He faced Gary Cochran in the final, and Cook was forced to shut off with an oil leak. He did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing instead to compete at the Lions AHRA Grand American race, which was run the same weekend (March 8). In the opening round, his 6.93 advanced, but in round two, an ailing 7.61 lost to Don Garlits' 6.65. Near the end of March, he returned to OCIR for its final All-Pro race. Don failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field but got in as an alternate for Kelly Brown, who broke. In round one, an off-pace 8.24 lost to low qualifier Norm Wilcox's 6.74/189. -- RH | Cook demolished his dragster while racing Chris Karamesines at Union Grove, Wis., on July 5, 1970. -- RT |

Notes: Cook qualified #6 at Lions for the AHRA Grand American with 6.80. In the opening round, his 6.83/211.76 fell to eventual winner Gary Cochran's 6.74/196.07. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.998/211.76 qualified #28. He lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round, 6.80/212 to 7.73/199.55. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. At OCIR's third All-Pro race held the week after Pomona (Feb. 14), Cook qualified for the eight-car field and ran 6.61/221.13 in the first round to beat Tony Nancy. In the semifinal, his 6.66/223.32 lost to Don Moody's 6.64/227. The following week, Cook was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.83/206.42 qualified second among AHRA's "seeded" cars behind Chris Karamesines' 6.79/217. He lasted until the third round, where he fouled away a 6.88/214.28 against Don Ewald. Don also ran 6.62 at York, PA. Don Cook moved to Missouri in 1971. Was the car still based out of California? |

Notes: A member of the "Greek Fleet." 6.51 Gateway {Don's season started at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran really well there, beating Mike Tarter in the first round before beating "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' 6.71 with a 6.66. He lasted until the semifinals of the 32-car show when his throttle linkage broke on the line against eventual winner Steve Carbone. He was one of 78 cars attempting to qualify at the Bakersfield March Meet. He made the show but lost to Larry Dixon in the opening round. A week later(March 12), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.58 qualified #12, but once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Flip Schofield. On May 9 at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals, Cook had a rough day. During qualifying, a wing strut brace broke, and it cut down a tire. The dragster got out of control and crashed. The chassis broke in two and skidded down the track to a stop. Don was okay, but the dragster was destroyed. He was down and out for a while, but on July 9, he was at Marion County for the AHRA Marathon Nationals. Cook had lost to Garlits in the semifinals, but Garlits blew his engine and was unable to return for the final, so Cook was reinstated. He lost that final to Chris Karamesines. |

Notes: ND article indicated that Maas, who had finally recovered from burns sustained driving the Hawaiian funny car, debuted the car with Garlits at the AHRA Grand American event at Orange County in early 1973. He did not qualify but ran 180 mph. Garlits was also there in his more conventional shorty dragster. Don Cook drove the car at IHRA Lakeland, Florida. Garlits said, "Both Maas and Cook said it was doing something funny, so I got in the car myself for a ride." Body by Jocko. Photo from Lakeland 73. |

Notes: In '56, Cook principally raced at Lions but ventured to a couple of other Southland strips also. He started out at San Gabriel Valley, taking the A/G class with 93.49 mph. The following week he went to Santa Ana, where he took a win in Heavy Gas, O.H., with a supercharged engine, clocking 95.23 mph. But it was in C/G where he wasgin having his best success. His heaviest competition in that class was generally Junior Thompson or Dave Catrow. At Lions, he took a C/G class win on Sep. 22 with 92.78 mph. A week later, at Lions, he took another C/G win with 93.55 mph. He began plucking C/G class wins at Lions with regularity. On Oct. 6, he took a class win with 92.68. On Nov. 11, he took another C/G win with 96.25 mph. Two weeks later, he copped another class win with 96.67 mph. On Dec. 2, he got another class win with 96.15 mph. On Dec. 9, he garnered another win with 96.98 mph. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 45, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Doug Cook finished the '58 season as arguably one of the top B/G cars in the country. It is unclear if he was running a blower at the beginning of the season when he raced at Santa Ana in Pappy Hart's Heavy Coupe class. At Santa Ana, he took wins on Mar. 2 (98.96 mph) and Mar. 23 (96.15 mph). But by the summer, he was running with the blower on his Chev-engined gasser. He mainly ran at Lions, which was close to his home. He took B/G class wins at Lions on June 28 (12.98 at 106.38 mph), July 19 (14.19 at 104.65 mph), and Aug. 2 (12.87 at 108.17 mph). On Aug. 31, at the Labor Day Championships at Colton, he got a B/G victory with 13.12 at 105.14 mph. At Lions on Oct. 4, he took a B/G win with 12.75 at 108.78 mph. He towed to Santa Ana the next day and got a B/G win with a track record time of 12.60 at 107.91 mph. On Oct. 11 at Lions, he won B/G with 12.74 at 108.30 mph. Notes: The race car was a gutted '66 Mustang steel shell with a Cal Auto glass front end, doors and deck lid, and Tom Hanna tin. 120" exhibition Engineering chrome-moly tube frame, 448" early hemi (392 with a half-inch CT stroker), B&M TorqueFlite trans, 2050 lbs. The car was destroyed in a crash at Alton, Illinois, in September 1967, seriously injuring longtime S-W-C shoe Cook and causing his retirement from racing. Seven-page feature in Drag Strip 4/67, including the full-page color plate. 5-page feature in Car Craft 3/67, including color plate and cutaway illustration. Doug ran an 8.19 track record at York US 30. | Doug qualified second with an 8.54/167.81 at the Irwindale New Year's Funny Car race. He lost in the first round. He was at Lions shortly after that (January 8) to make some test passes. The car went 8.48 and 8.98 on its first two passes before Cooke drove it to a final 8.50/166.97 and called it a day. At the Bakersfield Meet on February 19, the Stone, Woods & Cook team ran in the 2400 lb. fuel Funny Car class and won with a final round 8.58/159 over Al Vanderwoude. He raced "Jungle Jim" Liberman on March 5 for a best of three match race at Beeline, but Doug lost two straight. On March 11, he was in Texas for a best of three match against Arnie Beswick at San Antonio. Doug beat Arnie two straight. The next day, the same two squared off again at Green Valley. Cook, once again, won two straight, running a best of 8.64/168 over the Pontiac. Another match race win came at Alton on March 19, where he took on Gary Dyer driving the "Mr. Norm" Charger. It was a good match, with Doug winning the first race with an 8.51/157.61 over Dyer's 8.72/164. The Mustang got a little crossed up in the second race, and a quicker 8.82 couldn't catch the Charger's 8.87. Cook really laid one down in the final, running an 8.32 to win the match. The Mustang was towed into Lakeland on April 2 with a blown engine from the night before. Cook was there for a best of three match against Joe Lunati. Larry Reyes filled in for the first race with the "Kingfish." After that, Doug and his crew had the Mustang up for the second race. Doug then won the match two straight with runs of 8.69/165.13 and 8.74/164.83. The following week, he was at York US 30 for another match against Malcolm Durham. Doug won three straight, turning a career-best 8.19 at 169.17 in the first race. Times of 8.22/169.17 and 8.23/169.48 wrapped up the match. Doug ran a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay's GTO at Englishtown on April 30. It didn't start so well when just before the first race, the rear end let go on the Mustang, and Gay soloed for the win. After fixing the car, Doug came back to win the next race with an 8.40/165.44 when Don fouled. Cook also won the final and deciding race with an 8.35/166.66 beating the GTO's 8.64/160. In July, he won the Supercharged Invitational held at Capitol Raceway. He stopped Dyer in the final. On July 22, he was at Motor City Dragway for a four-car show. The Mustang broke on the line against Bob Sullivan in the first round. But in the second round, Doug beat Arnie Beswick with an 8.50/165.74. He improved on that time in his third race, where he beat Paula Murphy with an 8.43. Shortly after that, he was at Alton for a best of three match against Jim Thornton driving the "Ramchargers" Dart. The Dodge won the first race with an 8.38/171 that beat Cook's slightly quicker 8.36/166.66. In the second race, Doug was ready, and when the light went green, he got a holeshot on Jim, and his 8.37/167.59 beat Thornton's 8.95/168. Doug saved his best for last by running 8.29 in the final race to win the match. Shortly after that, he won the AHRA Summernationals at New York with a 7.99/176.05 in the final. In the middle of August, he was at York for a best of three match against Eddie Schartman. Cook won two straight. This was big as the factory Comets were still considered the cars to beat. In their first race, Schartman got out of shape and shut off while Doug ran 8.29 for the win. In the second race, he ran 8.07 to beat the Comet's 8.60 by more than half a second. The Mustang broke after that, and Ed saved face with an 8.36 solo run. Shortly after that (August 18), Doug was at 75/80 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Doug's 8.73/165.13 won their first race, but Jim came back to win the second with an engine blowing 8.58/161 that won when Cook fouled. Doug then made a solo for the match race victory, but what a solo it was as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.27/170.13. In September, a crash at Alton was attributed to the addition of a new rear decklid spoiler. The car had been running strong, and Cook wanted to try a rear spoiler on the car to see what it would do. He wanted the car to stay glued to the track harder and thought it would help. Tim Woods tried to talk Doug out of using the spoiler and even had Gene Adams talk to Doug and suggest another way of keeping the car planted. Adams thought that a lower rear gear might help. Doug felt that this would cause the engine to rev too high and blow. So, the rear spoiler stayed on the car. Just four days before his serious accident, he ran it into a cornfield as his 'chute failed to open due to the spoiler. At the top end of the track, he carried the front wheels six inches in the air, giving him no steering control until he popped the 'chute. He crashed hard in the lights after running 179 mph at Alton. The car was a total loss, and he had extensive injuries. That ended his driving career. |

Notes: First in the 8's. Set NHRA speed record at Lions Drag Strip at 166.97 on February 3, 1957. Also ran 159 and 165.13 on the same day, smashing the existing 157 mph record. This incredible speed (with an unblown, carbureted engine) caused organization officials to freak out and institute the nitro ban. Photo from Don Garlits' museum in Ocala, Florida. Cook was at Famoso on April 7, where he ran a track record 8.89. He also had Top Speed of the day at 163.35. | Cook and Bedwell 1957 - February 2 - day of the big runs, in order - 9.880/159.01 tied current world record, 2nd pass - 9.800/165.13 - the was the final. He just ran the fastest speed in history by six mph. MT asked him to stick around and make another run - then made a single after the final - 10.020/166.97! Then went to Bakersfield on April 7 - 163.35 at 8.890 - then on May 5, he went to Colton and went 168.85 on a 9.450 pass. He and two or three other cars were shipped to Hawaii in 1957 to run at Kahuku Air Base - the big drag strip in Hawaii. He ran over 160 there! Four days - July 4 through July 7, 1957 - Thursday through Sunday - 1st annual Hawaii summer Invitational drag racing championships. Cook first run-on Thursday 9.19/157.89 in front of 4000 people on Thursday. Richer in Nesbit Car 9.49/153.84, Cortopassi class 9.84/142.38, then local guys - Longie Gandall 10.33/136, local guy. Second day - Bruce Geisler - sports car day two - Fred Watanabe - motorcycle - promoter Jimmy Sujiyama - Cook then ran Friday and Saturday but not faster than they had - Cook - 166.96 Sunday July 7 - 9.89 to win top eliminator honors! 3000 fans. - Bret Kepner |

Notes: The car was originally the Paul Schiefer 1925 T roadster with Merc/3-speed/30s banjo. Schiefer changed the body to the '27 T, and later Bean Bandits made the car rear-engined. Later sold to Red Henslee, who partnered with Holly Hedrich, then Emery Cook. Car destroyed in drag strip return road mishap. |
