Notes: Cook had one of the best top-ending cars in '68. He started his season at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car field, and in round one, his 7.39/213.28 defeated Neil Leffler's 7.53/208 in Joe Winters's car. His 7.33 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 7.24 in Lou Baney's Ford in round two. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.89/221.12 qualified #1. His 7.30/221.12 won his opening race, but he fouled away a 6.97/223.32 against Dwight Salisbury in the next round. On February 13, Cook was in Las Vegas for the Stardust National Open. A 7.26 qualified #6, but he lost to "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the opening round. After that, he went to OCIR for its PDA Championships but failed to make it into the later rounds. He won an eight-car show at Lions on April 13. A 7.00/226.12 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.07/225.00 beat Frank Martinez, and in the semifinal, a 7.08/222.76 beat Dave Beebe. In the final, Don ran a 7.55/220.58 for the win over Ray Ayres. Another win came on May 11 at the Pro-Circuit race at Green Valley. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.72/214.24. Ron Manke fouled against him in the first round, and Cook advanced with a 7.15/217.90 (Top Speed and a new track record). Bennie Osborn fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don shut off to 8.80/140.95. In the final, he faced Vic Brown driving the "Creitz and Greer" car. Vic had problems and shut off while Cook blew his clutch and slowed to 7.89, but it was enough for the victory. The following day, he was at Tulsa for another Pro-Fuel Circuit race. Thirty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Cook qualified and then beat George Rodriguez in the first round. The "Carroll Brothers" car, driven by Gary Bailey, lost fire in round two, and Don advanced. He faced Osborn in the semifinals, and Bennie's 7.35 lost to Cook's 7.25. Once again, he faced Brown in the final. This time, Vic beat him for the win. He competed at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol, where he had a very interesting semifinal race with Brown. Vic had fouled, and Don just had to make an easy pass to reach the final, but he crossed the centerline during his run and was disqualified. Don was at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race against Preston Davis on June 16. The "Southwind" won its first race with a 7.42/229.30 over Preston's 7.54/207 in the "Bo-Weevil." Davis evened the score in the second race with a 7.34/208 solo when Cook could not repair his car in time. Cook proved that the 229 was no fluke by running a 7.27/227 to win the race. Needless to say, the 229.30 was a track record. On August 4, Cook competed at Castle Rock for the High Altitude Nationals. It was a 32-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.25/212.26 beat Otis Campbell. In the second round, his 7.24/210.28 defeated Harold Wilson. The car lost fire during its run against Earl Binns in round three. Shortly after that (August 18), he was at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. Cook showed just what kind of fierce competitor he was there. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the second round, he had his engine blow while winning. In forty minutes, he and his crew pulled the engine out of Leroy Goldstein's "Wienerschnitzel" and installed it in Cook's chassis. He then set Low ET of the meet with a 7.00 while winning his semifinal race. In the final, he went up against Joe Jacono and won, going away with a 7.07/225.00 (Top Speed). |

Notes: A member of Chris Karamesines' Greek Fleet. Front engine dragster. He qualified at the Bakersfield March Meet 69 with a 7.12. Cook started the '69 season at Sacramento on January 1. Unfortunately, in the opening round, he lost to Ken Safford in Ted Gotelli's car. His next stop was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he qualified #11. He lost early there as well. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified seventh with a 7.06 at 208.33 mph. A first-round 7.22 beat Jimmy King's 7.48. He lost to a holeshot by Jerry Ruth in the second round when his 7.00/212.76 lost to Ruth's 7.07. At the Bakersfield March Meet, his 6.89 qualified #7. In the first round, his 7.47/209.82 fell to Hank Westmoreland's 6.94/212. On March 9, he raced at the Sears Point National Open. He made it into the semifinals of the sixteen-car show before losing to Don Garlits' 7.06/214 with a 7.29/215.37. Back in Sacramento on March 30 for the Top Fuel Championships, he qualified third with a 7.33. Ray Mantago fouled against him in the first round but lost to Jim Herbert in the semifinal. On May 4, Don was at National Trail for a best-of-three match against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Ramchargers" car. He won the first race with a 7.00/207.84 when Goldstein broke. They had two more races, and both times, Leroy fouled, giving Cook the match race victory. He was at Martin, Michigan, for a sixteen-car show on May 30. He made it to the final by running 6.94/208.32 in the first round, and in round two, his 6.91/214.28 beat a tire-smoking Dick LaHaie. A 6.87/216.34 stopped Steve Carbone's 6.90/197 in a close race in the semifinals. He faced a strong running John Mulligan, who had run nothing but 6.6's in eliminations. Sure enough, Mulligan pounded out another 6.65/230 to get the victory, while Cook shut off at 7.60/145.00. Soon after, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. Don qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until round two, where he popped a supercharger while running Goldstein. On June 29, he was at New York National for the Smokers Meet. Over 50 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field. Cook qualified well, and a first-round 6.72/212.76 beat Duane Ong. But he got out of shape in the second round and shut off against Fred Forkner. Cook was back in Martin, Michigan, on July 4. This race featured two eight-car fields, a UDRA race, and an "All-Star" race in which he competed. Cook ended up winning. An opening round 6.99/203.16 defeated the "Creitz and Donovan" car. He then ran 7.04/200 in the semifinal to beat Tom Hoover's Ford. He faced Dave Powers in the final, and Dave fouled away a 6.97 while Don ran an easy 7.83 for the win. |

Notes: Don qualified #29 at NHRA Pomona at 7.110/213.27. He lost to Gary Cochran in round one, 6.892/202.70 to 7.488/217.91. That was his only NHRA national event of the year (Dick Boufgesous drove his Corvette FC at Pomona). Sixty-six Top Fuel cars showed up at Fremont on February 15 for the Northern Nationals sixteen-car field. Don qualified, but he blew a rear end in the opening round and lost to eventual winner Steve Carbone. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. It took a 6.86 just to qualify for the eight-car field. Cook made the show, and his 7.16/182.18 advanced over a fouling John Wiebe in the first round. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 6.83/192.71 held off Jim Dunn's quicker 6.77/204. He faced Gary Cochran in the final, and Cook was forced to shut off with an oil leak. He did not race at the Bakersfield March Meet, choosing instead to compete at the Lions AHRA Grand American race, which was run the same weekend (March 8). In the opening round, his 6.93 advanced, but in round two, an ailing 7.61 lost to Don Garlits' 6.65. Near the end of March, he returned to OCIR for its final All-Pro race. Don failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field but got in as an alternate for Kelly Brown, who broke. Notes: Cook qualified #6 at Lions for the AHRA Grand American with 6.80. In the opening round, his 6.83/211.76 fell to eventual winner Gary Cochran's 6.74/196.07. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.998/211.76 qualified #28. He lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round, 6.80/212 to 7.73/199.55. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. At OCIR's third All-Pro race held the week after Pomona (Feb. 14), Cook qualified for the eight-car field and ran 6.61/221.13 in the first round to beat Tony Nancy. In the semifinal, his 6.66/223.32 lost to Don Moody's 6.64/227. The following week, Cook was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.83/206.42 qualified second among AHRA's "seeded" cars behind Chris Karamesines' 6.79/217. He lasted until the third round, where he fouled away a 6.88/214.28 against Don Ewald. Notes: A member of the "Greek Fleet." 6.51 Gateway {Don's season started at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran really well there, beating Mike Tarter in the first round before beating "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' 6.71 with a 6.66. He lasted until the semifinals of the 32-car show when his throttle linkage broke on the line against eventual winner Steve Carbone. He was one of 78 cars attempting to qualify at the Bakersfield March Meet. He made the show but lost to Larry Dixon in the opening round. A week later(March 12), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.58 qualified #12, but once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Flip Schofield. On May 9 at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals, Cook had a rough day. During qualifying, a wing strut brace broke, and it cut down a tire. The dragster got out of control and crashed. The chassis broke in two and skidded down the track to a stop. Don was okay, but the dragster was destroyed. He was down and out for a while, but on July 9, he was at Marion County for the AHRA Marathon Nationals. Cook had lost to Garlits in the semifinals, but Garlits blew his engine and was unable to return for the final, so Cook was reinstated. He lost that final to Chris Karamesines. |

Notes: ND article indicated that Maas, who had finally recovered from burns sustained driving the Hawaiian funny car, debuted the car with Garlits at the AHRA Grand American event at Orange County in early 1973. He did not qualify but ran 180 mph. Garlits was also there in his more conventional shorty dragster. Don Cook drove the car at IHRA Lakeland, Florida. Notes: In '56, Cook principally raced at Lions but ventured to a couple of other Southland strips also. He started out at San Gabriel Valley, taking the A/G class with 93.49 mph. The following week he went to Santa Ana, where he took a win in Heavy Gas, O.H., with a supercharged engine, clocking 95.23 mph. But it was in C/G where he wasgin having his best success. His heaviest competition in that class was generally Junior Thompson or Dave Catrow. At Lions, he took a C/G class win on Sep. 22 with 92.78 mph. A week later, at Lions, he took another C/G win with 93.55 mph. He began plucking C/G class wins at Lions with regularity. On Oct. 6, he took a class win with 92.68. On Nov. 11, he took another C/G win with 96.25 mph. Two weeks later, he copped another class win with 96.67 mph. On Dec. 2, he got another class win with 96.15 mph. Notes: Doug Cook finished the '58 season as arguably one of the top B/G cars in the country. It is unclear if he was running a blower at the beginning of the season when he raced at Santa Ana in Pappy Hart's Heavy Coupe class. At Santa Ana, he took wins on Mar. 2 (98.96 mph) and Mar. 23 (96.15 mph). But by the summer, he was running with the blower on his Chev-engined gasser. He mainly ran at Lions, which was close to his home. He took B/G class wins at Lions on June 28 (12.98 at 106.38 mph), July 19 (14.19 at 104.65 mph), and Aug. 2 (12.87 at 108.17 mph). On Aug. 31, at the Labor Day Championships at Colton, he got a B/G victory with 13.12 at 105.14 mph. At Lions on Oct. 4, he took a B/G win with 12.75 at 108.78 mph. He towed to Santa Ana the next day and got a B/G win with a track record time of 12.60 at 107.91 mph. On Oct. 11 at Lions, he won B/G with 12.74 at 108.30 mph.
