Notes: Blown fuel. This car was built late in 1966, probably did not hit the strip until 1967. Alley ran this same chassis through 1970 with Cudas replacing the Charger, and a Duster replacing the Cuda bodies.

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win.

Notes: Ray was at the AHRA Winternationals Funny Car meet at Lions on January 28. It was a 32-car affair, and he qualified #10 with an 8.41/171.10. He advanced past the first round when the "Green Hornet" lost fire on the line. In the second round, a wheelstand slowed Ray to a 9.67, and he lost to Ed Schartman's 8.11. Ray then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA still did not have a Funny Car class, so he had to run in Super Eliminator. But his first-round 8.34/138.46 lost to Richard Galli's A/FD. He was at Lions again on February 24 when over 50 cars showed for the 16-car field at the Funny Car Spectacular. Unfortunately, a best of 8.48 failed to crack the 8.41 bump. Ray did better the next day (February 25) at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. He beat Randy Walls in the first round, with an 8.32/172.74, but a second-round 8.35/180.36 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.84/183. On March 3, Irwindale held a 16-car show with 30 cars trying to qualify. Ray qualified #9 with an 8.32/174.41, putting him against the #1 qualifier in his first-round race. Alley improved to an 8.25 but still lost to Charlie Allen's 8.16. Ray ran at OCIR for a sixteen-car show on April 13, but he lost to Norm Cowdrey in the first round. On May 4, OCIR held its 1968 Funny Car team Championships. Ray again lost in the first round; this time, Gas Ronda's 8.09/178 beat him. He lost early at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR on June 1. Although he lost early at Irwindale on June 22, Ray set Low ET in qualifying at 7.96. A first-round 8.30/187.50 (Top Speed) lost to Randy Walls' holeshot 8.35/171. Ray ran 7.860/185.94 at Bristol 9/20/68 while winning the All American Funny Car Championships.

Notes: Ray started the season by qualifying #12 with an 8.06 at Irwindale's (40 cars showed) New Year's day race. He advanced past the first-round when Dick Harrell fouled, and an ailing 9.23/111.52 beat Clyde Morgan in the second round. Ray was unable to run in the semifinal and was replaced with the break rule in effect by Morgan again. At the AHRA Winternationals, he made it to the second round before getting beat by Danny Ongais in the M/T Mustang. He did much better on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, where forty cars again showed for sixteen spots. He qualified #4 with an 8.14/183.67 on a poor Pomona surface; only one car ran a seven in qualifying. A first-round 8.41 beat Art Ward (8.73), and he soloed in round two after Larry Reyes's crash in the Hawaiian kept him from returning for the second round. An 8.27/185.95 just nipped Rich Siroonian's 8.27/184.42 in John Mazmanian's Cuda in the semifinal. In the final, his 8.11/187 lost to Clare Sanders' 7.88/187 in Jim Liberman's second car. To show how good this early-hemi powered car was, on February 9, 35 cars showed up at OCIR for an eight-car show for the second All-Pro race, and Alley's 7.72/189.46 qualified #6. Pat Foster, Clare Sanders, Tom Grove, Randy Walls, Fred Goeske, and Steve Bovan were among the non-qualifiers. Ray failed to make the finals, but it was a good showing. Another runner-up finish came on February 22 at an eight-car show at Lions where Pat Foster in the M/T Mustang lost fire on the line against him in the first round, and in the semi's, he beat Randy Walls. A 7.70 by Siroonian in the final ended his bid for the title. At Bakersfield on March 2, he lost in the first round, to Tom McEwen's 7.78/196.93 to his 8.18/187.50. He then went to Riverside for the HRM Championships on March 16, where a 7.96 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to Marv Eldridge in Clyde Morgan's Javelin. On March 22, Lions held an eight-car show, and 22 cars showed. It took an 8.19 or better to get in, and Alley failed to make the cut. At the final OCIR All-Pro on March 29, he qualified but fouled away a 7.70/190.64 in the first round, against Charlie Allen's 7.45/194. On April 26, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show where he advanced past the first round when AMX-1 broke on the line. In the second round, he got out of shape against Ongais (7.47/191) and shut off. OCIR held its second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open on May 3, and Alley qualified second on the Mopar team with a 7.85/191.08. In his first race, an 8.04/193.96 beat Larry Fullerton's 8.54/181, and the second win came with an 8.64/187.10 beating Clyde Morgan, but he fouled away a 7.70/192.30 in his third race against Randy Walls (8.11/182). In didn't do very well in the thin air at Thunder Road Dragway in Denver, Colorado, on May 25, losing to John Dekker's Assassination in three straight races. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #4 with a 7.81/189.07. A first-round 7.98/180.00 beat Ed Schartman's ailing Cougar, and a second-round 7.91/180.80 beat Don Gay's 8.58. Ray fouled in the semifinal against Ongais (7.57). Alley was runner-up to Fritz Callier at Beeline when he got crossed up in the final. He ran on July 12 at Irwindale's Race with a Reason but lost to Dave Beebe's 7.54/195 to Alley's 7.93/184.82 in the first round. The following week (July 19), he qualified #10 at the PDA Championships with an 8.22, but he fouled away an 8.16 against Ongais' 7.58 in the first round. Irwindale held another sixteen-car show on August 16, and Alley made a good account of himself with a first-round 7.91/187.50 over Steve Bovan's 7.97/174 in the Mister T Camaro. He lost in the second round. The Drag News Nationals was held at Lions on August 30. Alley qualified, but an 8.40/135.55 lost to Ed Lenarth's 7.74/186 in the first round. He got back in on the break rule in the second round but ended up breaking on the line, advancing Jim Adolph. He ran a first-round 7.58 for Low ET on September 1 at an eight-car show at Irwindale but hurt some parts doing it and had to withdraw from making the semifinal. The following week (September 6), he set Top Speed at 189.87 at an eight-car show at OCIR. He qualified fifth with an 8.03, but not only did he foul in his first race, but he also lost a blower. Late in the year, on November 23, he ran at Irwindale's big 32-car show, and an 8.07/172.16 got past Jim Maybeck's 8.63 in the first round. A blown rear end put him out in the second round. He followed that up with a big win on November 29 over an eight-car field at Lions. A first-round 7.49/193.54 advanced when Gene Conway's Corvette caught fire on the line. Larry Reyes broke in the Hawaiian advancing Alley in the semifinal with an easy 9.57. In the final, Siroonian broke, giving Ray a free 7.57/199.55 victory. At OCIR for an eight-car show on December 6, 20 cars showed, and it took a 7.51 to qualify. Ray's 7.53/198.23 was only good for the first alternate. He did qualify on December 14 for an eight-car show at Irwindale when a 7.64 qualified #4. A first-round 7.54/189.86 beat Fred Goeske's 7.70/174, but in the semis, Reyes' 7.27/199 stopped his 7.74/194.98. It was a good season for Alley.

His 7.49/194.38 beat Andy Clary in the first round, but his 7.67 in the semifinal lost to Dave Beebe's 7.49. On July 3, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.53/191.08 beat John Lombardo's 7.86/185. Marv Eldridge fouled against him in round two, so Alley advanced with a 7.51/189.07. His next opponent, Mert Littlefield, shut down early and Ray's 7.66/177.86 went to the final. He faced Arnie Behling, who was behind the wheel of John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The final wasn't very close as Behling set Low ET with a 7.25 at 200 to easily cover Alley's 7.95/191.89. The following day, he was at Irwindale for the Fourth of July Championships. This was only an eight-car show, but Alley qualified. An opening round 8.53/135.13 advanced when Don Hampton crossed the centerline, but the Duster broke in its semifinal match against eventual winner Behling. Ray got another runner-up finish at Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. In the first round, his quick-leaving 7.83/179.28 beat Steve Bovan's 7.76/188. He actually lost to Behling's 8.02/133 in the semifinals when he ran an off-pace 8.81/187.50, but Arnie's Cuda had blown a rear end, so Alley was reinstated for the final. There he ran against Roger Wolford, who was driving the "Mako Shark" Corvette. The two had a good race, but Roger's 7.61/176 got to the stripe first before Alley's 7.65/193.54. Yet another runner-up finish came at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. In the first round, Ed Lenarth lost fire, giving Alley a 7.71/185.56 solo. In the second round, Danny Ongais lost fire in the M/T Mustang. Ray ran 7.51/185.56 to advance. Once again, he needed a little "help" with the "break rule" as he lost his semifinal race to Gene Conway. Alley's 7.79/186.33 lost to Conway's 7.47/192.71. But in the other semifinal race, both Lombardo and Dave Condit were able to get their cars down the track due to breakage, so both were disqualified. Alley now had to rerun Conway in the final. This time Ray had troubles and shut off to 11.52/99.77 while Conway got the victory with a 7.65/181. He ventured to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals on July 31. He ran times of 7.85, 7.50, and 7.48/193.12 to reach the final. It was an all-Duster final as he faced Ed McCulloch. The two had a great race that saw Ed's 7.05/210 win over Ray's quicker 6.99/199.48. McCulloch also stopped him at the third NHRA Division 7 race held at Bakersfield on August 9. This time it came in the semifinals. A week later (August 15), he was at OCIR for its anniversary race. It was a sixteen-car field, and Alley's opening round 7.53/192.71 beat Condit's 7.70/196 in the "L. A. Hooker." But in round two, he fouled away a 7.49/192.71 against Eldridge.

Notes: Raced the Barracuda through mid year 1970 before converting to the Duster. Photo from 1969. | Ray Alley started the '70 season at Irwindale for their new year's day race. He qualified seventh with a 7.65, but got crossed-up in road one and lost to Johnny Wright. He qualified #1 with a 7.40 at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 18, but broke in the first round. At Beeline, 52 cars attempted to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals. Alley was one of them who failed to make the show. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, he failed to qualify. On March 14, OCIR held an eight-car Funny Car show. Alley was attempting to qualify, but he lost a couple of rods and was unable to run. At the final All-Pro race on March 28, Alley's 7.89/193.54 got him into the second round where he had to shut off on the line with an oil leak. On April 18 at OCIR, Ray's 7.48/198.23 beat Mike Snively's quicker 7.44/200.00 in round one, but lost to Gene Conway's 7.42/175 in the semis with a 7.74/191.08. At OCIR's Big Four Championships on May 2, he ran a 7.48/193.54 best before fouling in round three of the 32-car field. NHRA held its Division 7 points race at Irwindale on May 23 and Ray Alley made it all the way to the final before losing to Mike Snively. Back at OCIR on May 30 for the Funny Car 500, he ran a first-round 7.38/196.50, an easy 8.51/178 when Don Hampton fouled, and an out of shape, losing 7.90/191.89 in the semis. Notes: Also had a plain enamel red paint job this year. |Ray Alley was racing for 25 years when the '71 season started. He was a very helpful person. In '70 his good friend Marv Eldridge was critically injured. Alley stepped up and ran Eldridge's Fiberglass Trends shop. He didn't have to be asked as he stepped in to help. Ask any racer of the time and I’m sure they would have a good story to recount about Ray. His '71 ride was a switch for him. He had always run Mopar bodied Funny Car's, but his new car was a Mustang sitting on a 118" wheelbase John Buttera chassis. It used a Halibrand rear with 5.41 gears and a Lenco two-speed transmission. A stock-stroke 426 Hemi used Howards rods and Arias pistons was used. The cam was also by Howards. A John Hovan built blower sat on a Cragar manifold. Up on top sat Enderle injection. The article in the November. '71 SS/FC magazine claimed that Ray had set track records at Irwindale and Seattle. It also went on to say that he had topped 212 with the car. Ray set Low ET at OCIR's March of Dimes event in June with a 6.88. He made it into the final of the eight-car show by winning his first-round race with a 6.91/205.71 to beat Bob Pickett's quicker 6.89/215. He ran his Low ET in the semifinals with his 6.88 at 208.81 beating Sush Matsubara's 7.08/214. In the final, he fell off to a 7.18/205.47 that finished runner-up to Dave Beebe's 6.90/216 in the "Mr. Ed" car.

Notes: On January 23, Ray was runner-up at the second OCIR All-Pro race. He beat Gary Burgin's 6.94/210 in the first round, with a 6.85/205.94. In the semifinals, a 6.85/209.79 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car. An off-pace 7.28 in the final lost to Snow's track record 6.57. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost to Leroy Chadderton driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The "Hawaiian" got him again in the first round, at the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 25. On May 6, he was at OCIR's Big Four Championships. Bob Pickett fouled against him in the first round, but in round two, his engine exploded while running a winning 7.22/184.80. He won his race, but received minor burns and was unable to return for round three (32-car show). He was at Lions a couple of weeks later for the second annual Funny Car Festival. An opening round 7.15/192.71 beat Mert Littlefield, but he lost soon after. Alley was back at OCIR for the Hang Ten meet where his 7.05/189.47 in the first round, lost to Joe Lee's 6.95/209.
